We made a project on javaforge.com, created an svn repository and started developing our app. Right now we are really far with our project, but somehow we never worried if our project is really safe on such free development tool like javaforge ? I mean, what if our project would earn some money and the source code become valuable ? Could it be stolen or could somebody take it over ? We want to be sure that we are not wasting our time and want to be really sure about our project safety. Is it possible to safely develop a project in such free repository ? • Is it common to prototype in a higher level language?

  I'm currently toying with the idea of embarking on a project that far exceeds my current programming ability in a language I have very little real world experience in (C). Would it be valuable to prototype in a higher level language that I'm more familiar with (like Perl/Python/Ruby/C#) just so I can get the overall design going? Ultimately, the final product is performance sensitive, hence the choice of C, but I'm afraid not knowing C well will make me lose the forest for the trees. While searching for similar questions, I noticed one fellow mention that programmers used to prototype in Prolog, then crank it out in assembler.

• Oracle Hosts Successful PeopleSoft Customer Advisory Board Meetings

  Last week, Oracle hosted the annual Customer Advisory Board meetings for various PeopleSoft applications, including the PeopleTools CAB.  The three day event at the Oracle headquarters brought together over 90 customers, with over 170 representatives taking part.  This was the largest CAB event PeopleSoft has had to date.  The focus of the event was to share our vision for PeopleSoft, and gain valuable input from our customer base on our direction and focus areas.  The customer feedback we received for the event was extremely positive, matching the sentiment on our side.  The information our CAB members provided was excellent; it will help ensure that we focus on the areas that matter most to our customers.   I’d like to thank all the customers that took the time out of their schedules to hear where we’re looking to go in the future, and provide guidance on how we can best assist our customer base on remaining successful in the marketplace.

  "Web Intents" were deprecated in Chrome 24 (November/2011) and are no longer supported in any browser: We also gathered a lot of valuable data and feedback from our experimental support for Web Intents and decided to disable the feature in today's Beta release. Is there an HTML5 standard that I can look into as an alternative to what Web Intents intended? I'm interested in how web services can be stitched together.   Plenty of sentiment exists that measuring commits is inappropriate. Has any study been done that tries to draw in more sources than commits - such as: browsing patterns IDE work (pre-commit) idle time multitasking I can't think of an easy way to do these measures, but I wonder if any study has been done. On a personal note, I do believe that reflection on one's own 'metrics' could be valuable regardless of (or in the absence of) using these for performance eval. I.E. an un-biased way to reflect on your habits. But this is a discussion matter beyond Q&A.

• Where can I locate business data to use in my application?

  This question talks about any and all free public raw data which appeared to have valuable pieces but nothing that really provides what I am looking for. Instead of using a socially defined listing of businesses (foursquare), I would like a business listing data set of registered businesses and associated addresses that could then be searchable based on location (coordinates). The critical need is that the data set should be filterable based on varying criteria (give me all restaurants, coffee shops, etc...). If the data is free that is great but anywhere that sells this type of data would also suffice. Infochimps looked like a possibility but perhaps something a bit more extensive exists. Where can I find a free or for fee data set of registered business that is filterable based on type of business and location?

  I'm analyzing web server logs both in Apache and IIS log formats. I want to find the evidence for automatic browsing, like web robots, spiders, bots, etc. I used python robot-detection 0.2.8 for detecting robots in my log files, but I know there may be other robots (automatic programs) which have traversed through the web site but robot-detection can not identify. So I want to ask: Are there any specific clues that can be found in log files that human users do not leave but automated software would? Do they follow a specific navigation pattern? I saw some requests for favicon.ico - does this implicate that it is a automatic browsing?. I found this article and this question with some valuable points.

• SEO: disallowing Google from indexing forms in iframes or not?

  I usually place forms in iframes (i.e. order form, request assistance form, contact forms, ect.). Just the forms, I never place other contents or pages in iframes. From a SEO point of view, would you exclude forms from being indexed/crawled by Google or not? I mean my forms hardly ever contains keyword/keyphrases, moreover I obviously place empty title/meta description tags in pages shown in iframe to display forms, cause those titles are never displaied in browser title bar. So I'm wondering what's the point of letting Google index them? Moreover I think these form pages might suck out PR from all other pages that are more valuable for SEO. If your answer is "yes I would exclude them form indexing" would you simply use robots.txt to exclude them? Thanks!

  Basically I am looking for what is it that you goof up and you are out from the remaining process ? Are elimination rounds a fair way to judge a person ? Anyone can have a bad hour :-( Should you code the best possible or should you get the Algorithm right ? I generally first code a workable solution and then work on it till a level I think it looks beautiful to me. Is this a wrong approach ? Recently I had a telephonic interview in which I was asked to write a variation of Level Order traversal in 20 minutes. I could get the Algorithm and working code in 20 minutes but couldn't get the Exception handling and the coding convention right, after which I didn't hear back from them :-( All the other questions in the interview went very well this was the only thing which was 'not upto the mark'. Needless to say I like the company and will apply again but want to get it right the next time :-) Please share your experiences and valuable suggestions.
