• Setting up SSL with 389 Directory Server for LDAP authentication

  I've got 389 Directory Server running on RHEL 5 with groups, users, posix etc. RHEL clients are authenticating users with LDAP - no problems, everything works perfect, but passwords are sent in plaintext and are visible with network sniffer. So, decided to run with SSL: Created CA - got both private and public CA certificates Using CA certs: generated both of private and public certificates and combined (1st file) for 389DS according to 389DS certificate request, imported with CA public cert to 389DS from graphical console (2nd file). Enabled SSL in 389DS On the client, using authconfig-gtk enabled SSL for LDAP, specified only CA public certificate Doesn't work. Howto? What is the best way to integrate safely?

• Trying to get a PC to boot off a bootable SD card that is inside an USB attached Android device.

  First, I'd like to make myself look less a madman than I may have appeared to be. I wanted to have a bootable USB stick with me at all times, but it's less convenient because it's an extra object and it's easier to lose, forget etc. Then I thought, I have an Android phone, and it has a micro SD in it; perfect. Not all PC's can boot off a card reader, but the phone itself is a card reader when attached as a disk drive. Or at least so I thought. Turns out that my netbook BIOS (tested on Asus eeePC) refuses to see it as an external harddrive; it only recognizes it as a generic USB device and doesn't offer an option to boot from it. The device has a name "Android phone" or smth, so it seems to me that it doesn't work as a "pure" card reader, and instead still manifests itself as a phone. Can it be somehow overridden?

• Why is group write permission ignored in Ubuntu?

  I want my user to have full access to the local Apache root folder, and I also want the Apache user to have full access to the same folder. What I did was create a new group called DevGroup and I added my user and www-data there. Also I changed the permissions to 770 to allow full group access. But now it won't allow me or the Apache user any kind of access to the folder. • Bandwidth monitor for apache websites

  I am after a web application that will parse apache log files and record how much bandwidth the user has used. We have several virtual hosts that have custom log files and the I/O is recorded at the end of the logfile. However I can't find an application that will parse multiple log files and display a summary for each site. I believe awstats can do this but I want to be able to see all of my clients in one list. If there is something that integrates into cacti then that would be perfect.

• I noticed the answer to the Aug 2009 question of using VBA to set Custom Flag values

  We are actively using the Follow Up mail feature to assign users to particular mail follow up items. Although mail item follow ups are generally the province of the individual user, by changing the flag value from "Follow Up" to "User name", we can see each other's follow up tasks and group on responsible party. Currently we accomplish the Flag value change manually. My sense is the easiest way to perfect the process is a separate macro for each user. Along the lines of the macro to change the star/end due date to end of month, please define the macro to re-assign the Flag value for each highlighted mail item (previously assigned by default). • Window 7 problem, Explorer.exe, DWM.exe

  I'm using Window 7 Ultimate. I get a problem with two processes, namely explorer.exe and sometimes dwm.exe. The two processes tend to use cpu between 20-30%. And it only occurs when i play some game on my PC. My PC works perfect until I play some game. And another important observation: They consume no cpu as such but only consumes when I try to refresh my desktop. I mean when I right-click on desktop. It takes seconds for refresh. I have no virus problems. I had already tried following things: Kill explorer.exe and relaunch from task manager. (Problem still persists) Kill dwm.exe, well it relaunches again. (Problem still persists) Log Off and Log On. (Problem still persists) Restart. Problem Solved. (But need an alternative). Can anyone kindly suggest some quick fixes to the problem?

• How do I make an Illustrator file "higher resolution"?

  I was given an illustrator file, but all the curves on the artwork are jagged. I've tried "rasterizing" and exporting by increasing the size of the image. I don't know what else to do or what I'm doing wrong. My understanding is the beauty of Illustrator is that it's all done mathematically, so I can scale it up to infinity and it will be perfect (more or less). And that lines are drawn that way also, so they should be (or can be) infinitely smooth if they want to be. • Recommendation for Wiki that supports WYSIWYG?

  Currently we use a MediaWiki installation for writing documentation, but several of us find the markup format horribly arbitrary and awkward, with a mixture of Wiki tags and XML in the text, and the lack of any quick formatting buttons for things like ordered or unordered lists, different heading levels, quick embedding of images, tables, code samples, etc. Sites like LiveJournal provide most or all of this while still generating backwards-compatible markup so it's not like there's a technological impediment here. There are other niceties that we'd like to see, such as being able to pick a category from a list (ala Wordpress) or maybe being able to apply syntax highlighting to code samples, etc. Do Wikis exist that provide a decent range of these features to make life easier on the editor? Something with the features and presentation of WordPress but the page organisation of a Wiki would be perfect. (WikiMatrix returns several candidates, but among them is MediaWiki, which quite clearly is not a WYSIWYG interface except in the most tenuous fashion. I'd rather not dig through each one if it's plain that WikiMatrix is not being entirely stringent about its criteria.)

• My site not directing links correctly.

  I have a site at http://badassmonkeys.com/ and when i click any of the links it does not direct it to the actual page but still pulls up the link. For some reason it works perfectly on linux cpanel and actually loads the pages, but on windows in apache, or in IIS even with a rewrite mod for it, it just doesnt work. The links dont go correctly. Is it a php.ini setting? This is my htaccess file if curious, but it works perfect in linux, but not on windows.... • Need Boxee/Vista remote control recommendations

  I have an Acer Aspire X1200 (specs link below) desktop computer that I've installed Boxee on and it works great. And it looks like it's going to be a perfect computer for a media player. It's small with lots of hard drive space and even has a HDMI output on it. http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireX1200/AspireX1200sp2.shtml I also have a Harmony® 880 Advanced Universal Remote (specs link below) that I'd like to use with the Acer computer. www.logitech.com/en-us/440/372 My thought is that I need to get a USB remote control adapter, right? So I did a quick Google search and found products from $5 to hundreds of $$$. Does anyone have recommendations? Things you like/dislike about certain remotes? This Acer is running Vista and has a AMD LIVE!: Athlon X2 dual-core processor. 64 bit some times makes it a little more difficult. Thanks for the help.

• Gmail flagging emails as spam despite SPF being enabled and working perfectly

  I have a website where people can recommend contents to their friends using their email. The issue is that emails are being flagged as spam whereas if I do the same from my development machine things are working out fine. I have enabled SPF and it is perfect. When sending through website, the email appears as this in Gmail Inbox: From [email protected] to [email protected]. When I send it from my development machine it appears as : From xyz.com via mywebsite.com to [email protected] mailed by mywebsite.com and this is exactly how I envisioned it. From what little I could figure out by looking at the source of emails in Gmail is that when sending from my development machine Gmail correctly recognizes my domain as mywebsite.com for which SPF is enabled and hence it treats it as genuine email. Whereas Gmail recognizes my domain as [email protected] when sent through the website. Can someone tell me why it does so? Any help would be really appreciated.

  Hello there, I'm following an article to set up openSUSE as a commandline server (http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-opensuse-11.1). It seems to only work for wired internet connections. Is there any way to install openSUSE as a commandline server in my home network but using a wifi internet connection? Preferably from the get-go and not simply installing with LAN cable internet and then installing some wifi things later. Or, perhaps, to rephrase the question "How can I get the openSUSE install / post-install procedure to recognize my wifi internet connection?" Kind regards, Dougal

• Windows 8 sleep, blank screen on resume

  I use a SONY VAIO laptop VPCS116FA that came pre-installed with Windows 7. I have upgraded to Windows 8. The experience has been good so far but I am facing a frustrating problem. Whenever, I put my computer to sleep, it won't wake up and I have to restart it. Note that this does not affect hibernation which works perfectly fine. However, it is not a perfect alternative to sleep option.   I have setup some rules in which subdomains (my users) will default to where I have located the robots.txt, favicon.ico, and crossdomain.xml therefore if a user creates a site say testing.mywebsite.com and they don't make their own favicon.ico at testing.mywebsite.com/favicon.ico, then it will use the favicon.ico I have in /misc/favicon.ico This works perfect, but it doesn't work for the main website. If you attempt to go to mywebsite.com/favicon.ico it will check if "/" exists, in which it does. And then never redirects to /misc/favicon.ico How can I get it so both instances redirect to /misc/favicon.ico ? # Set all crossdomain (openpalace file) favorite icons and robots.txt doesnt exist on their # side, then redirect to site's just to have something to go on. • Apache SSL for login and NON-SSL for everything else (.htacces)

  Hey I've almost figured it out on my own but there's something I'm missing. I want to set a couple of directories and files to require SSL and everything else that's not related to those files and dirs to point back to http. The first condition works perfect - whenever I access login.php or /admin/ it points to https. But the second one doesn't... Where have I mistaken ? Thanks in advance!

• How to swap ctrl and fn key on a MacBook Pro running Windows 7 via Boot Camp?

  There are sooooo many discussion on the internet about swapping the fn and ctrl key on a MacBook Pro. On the Mac side, a new software called ReMap4MacBook does a perfect job swapping the two key. But on the PC side (specifically Windows 7), I can't really find a definitive answer. Most post refer to this article but I read the loooong article and followed the instructions to no avail. I remember there used to be a program (maybe it was on XP) that not only swapped the two keys but it also controlled the fans on the MacBook Pro. But I can't remember the name and I also recall that that program stopped being updated like years ago. EDIT: It's called Input Remapper. So I am hoping there exist a simple program that I can simply run to swap those two keys.

• Windows 7 Default Gateway problem

  I have a strange problem (or at least seems strange to me) the below are IP configurations for two laptops on my home network which consists of a main router 192.168.11.1 and a connected wireless router (i know this can cause problems but has always worked until I got the win7 machine) at 192.168.11.2 with DHCP disabled. Laptop 1 - Win XP IP: Dynamically assigned by main router default gateway: 192.168.11.1 (main router) This machine gets perfect connectivity. Laptop 2 - Win7 IP: dynamically assigned by main router Default Gateway: 192.168.11.2 THIS IS THE PROBLEM... I cannot seem to get this machine to default to the main router for the gateway UNLESS I go to a static configuration which I would rather not do since I regularly go between my home and public networks. Why is my Win7 machine not finding the main gateway the same way that the other laptop is? I believe that the rest of my setup is fine as it has always worked and it works perfectly when set as static ip and gateway. Please help! Thanks

  A common practice is to use non-preallocated virtual disks. Since they only grow as needed, it makes them perfect for fast backup, overallocation and creation speed. Since file systems are usually based on physical disks they have the tendency to use the whole area available1 in order to increase the speed2 or reliability3. I'm searching a filesystem that does the exact opposite : try to touch the minimum blocks need by an aggressive block reuse. I would happily trade some performance for space usage. There is already a similar question, but it is rather general. I have very specific goal : space-efficiency. 1. Like page caching uses all the free physical memory 2. • Looking for temporal upsampling / motion interpolation software

  I'm looking for something (prereably FOSS software) which can take an animation with N images as input, and which will output an animation with M frames, where M is in the range 2N to 5N or so. I believe the general technique is called "temporal upsampling" or possibly "inbetweening" (or "'tweening" for short). Note that it does need to make some effort to do motion tracking of things in the scene ("optical flow"); just fading ("dissolve") between keyframes isn't going to cut it. Googling "temporal upsampling" turns up any number of papers on the subject, but I've yet to discover any code/software (a gstreamer plugin would be perfect) I can just use to try the technique out. Any suggestions ? Additional information: "Motion interpolation" seems to be the more widely used name in the TV world for what I'm looking for. See this and the video here too. Interestingly, some cinephiles seem to hate what these technologies do to 24FPS film: e.g a comment "makes Gone With The Wind look like a soap opera shot on video".

  I used to use XChat, until i realised it was only free on Linux. It was my favourite IRC client I've used and it's my preferred choice on Linux now. I moved to mIRC but it's not perfect imo. I should try to get to use irssi more but I have a thing for GUIs. Terminal-style apps are ok but not something I'd like to spend ages looking at, especially on Windows. What GUI-based client do you use on Windows and why?

• How to get age field in Google Docs form:

  we need to create a form asking the clients for their age. Is there any way to create a field where you can only fill in numbers - maybe only 4 numbers like 1976 or 2011. Second alternative could be date. It would be perfect if I could limit the number - something like "not lower than 1800 and not higher than 2012" to prevent invalid numbers. I can create question with drop down list, but creating a list of all possible years would be stupid and incomfortable to choose from. thanks much

• Throttling apache downloads selectively

  I have a linux box running Debian Sarge (old I know) and apache 2.0.54. It serves two kinds of files - regular web pages and small images, and a lot of large podcast mp3s. The podcast downloads swamp the connection and make the rest of the site unresponsive, so I'm looking to throttle the data transfer rate (not the request rate) of just the podcasts. I've set up haproxy using this technique which does what it says it will, but solves a different problem - even only 5 simultaneous podcast downloads is enough to saturate the link. In a perfect world, haproxy would support per-connection throttling, but it doesn't. So far I've looked at mod_bw (won't compile for me, seems unsupported), mod_cband (unsupported, widely reported as problematic) and iptables using tc. The iptables approach would allow me to throttle things, but would not be at all selective, slowing down everything on the server, not just the podcasts, so would just move the bottleneck without changing overall behaviour. Ideas?

• How to start Internet Explorer 8 without any bars

  Hi. At work I use LogMeIn to do remote assistance for our customers. The only thing which is bugging me is that you can switch to fullscreen mode but it doesn't offer to open the remote session in a new window without address bar, bookmarks bar and stuff. So I'm looking for a way to open the LogMeIn Tech Console in a new browser window without any bars. Fullscreen mode is nice but not usable when working with other applications besides the remote session. The Internet Explorer Kiosk mode also doesn't fit my needs. I created a bookmarklet with works quite nice but having a link directly on my desktop would be perfect. Does anyone have a hint on that? I use IE8 on Windows XP SP3. Thx in advance Dennis
