The README is in Google's codepreview which uses Google-appengine. To run the app locally (e.g. for testing), download the Google App Engine SDK from http://code.google.com/appengine/downloads.html. You can then run the server using make serve I run make serve in my terminal after moving Google-appengine.app to my Application -folder in OS X Leopard. I get make: *** No rule to make target `serve'. Stop. How can you run the make serve to run the server for Google AppEngine?

How to install matplotlib on OS X?

I want to install matplotlib on OS X. If possible, using homebrew. I installed Python 2.7.1 using brew install python, I modified my path to use it I installed pip using brew install pip I installed numpy 1.5.1 using pip install numpy I installed scipy 0.8.0 using pip install scipy This is where it gets hairy. pip install matplotlib will fetch the wrong version of matplotlib, which is incompatible with the recent version of numpy. The solution is to fetch the correct version of matplotlib manually: pip install -f http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0.1/matplotlib-1.0.1.tar.gz matplotlib But, that version fails to compile since it can't find the freetype headers: In file included from src/ft2font.cpp:1: src/ft2font.h:14:22: error: ft2build.h: No such file or directory These headers are actually installed in /usr/X11/include as part of the X11 developer tools. So, how can I make matplotlib use these headers?

Sync desktop Mac environment to laptop

I spend the majority of my time working at my desktop Mac, which I have configured for my web development environment. My spouse has a MacBook for casual use, and I occasionally steal it back when I need to work off-site, or when travelling. The question is how to best synchronize the two so I can switch between them more readily. I've solved a few obvious things by using online services: Email is hosted on IMAP. Working files are in Dropbox. Source code is managed in git. However, the following are things I always miss when jumping on the laptop: Installed Applications (current versions) Installed libraries & utilities (/usr/local) Apache VirtualHosts & other configurations (/etc) Disk image files for VMs My current method is to connect the MacBook via Firewire target mode and rsync the /Users/me home directory, and then cherry-pick the other items I need from Applications, /etc and /usr/local. The problem with this method is that it can be very time consuming due to things like my virtual machine image files, cached emails, etc. How can I make this faster & easier? Can you recommend a solution for configuration management (so I can repeatably install & configure the same software on both), or synchronization (so I can bring the MacBook up to date nightly, over our home network)?

How do I keep folders synced and backed up between two macs using a Linux NAS (rsync?)

I've got two primary computers, one Mac Pro and one MacBook Pro for when I'm on the go. I've also got a Linux sever which also acts as NAS. Currently I backup the entire computers to an external drive with Time Machine which is rather useless and doesn't sync anything. What I really want to do is to keep my important files synced between both computers and my NAS (which is running RAID 5), that way I'm not backing up easily replaceable systemfiles and I've got all my important files in 3 places where two of them are running raid so at least 5 drives would have to crash at the same time before actual data loss occur. Folders I want to keep synced is basically my photo, documents, development, mamp and work folders and then I want to keep the user library folder backed up but not synced. I'm thinking that I'd have to use rsync but don't know how. Before suggesting Dropbox and similar suggestions I don't want to use them because of several reasons some of them being security (Dropbox obviously proved this), Speed (sometimes I'll sync gigabytes of data and that will be significantly faster locally and probably even through VPN as I have a Gigabit pipe), Space (space on my NAS is cheap and only practically limited by my needs), reliability (even if my internet were to go down I still need to be able to keep my files synced incase I'd need to go somewhere on the fly), price (I already have all the hardware and for the amount of gigabytes and bandwidth I'd need I doubt that there's any free or cheap service). Those are my main reason for wanting to keep it locally. I'm sorry for any spelling or grammatical mistakes that I've might have done. I'm writing this on my smartphone from a shaky train and English isn't my mother tongue. I gratefully appreciate any answers even if only partly solving my problem.

How do I change the URL handler for Apple Mail?

When I highlight and right-click on text in an email message in Apple Mail 4.4 (1082), I can select "Search in Google". Despite having either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox set as my default web browser within Apple Safari 5.0.3 (6533.19.4) preferences, Apple Mail will open Safari, then open a new window in Safari with the search results. How do I change the default URL handler in Apple Mail, so that searches are opened in my default browser? Or is this a known bug? Thanks for your advice!

How to rescue from an SD (SDHC) card that I can't reformat (possible hardware failure)

I have a transcend 16GB SDHC card and a lot of photos on it that I'd like to recover. When I plug it into the SD card reader, it takes a while for the Mac to even recognize that there's a disk present, and it shows up as 1.07GB with geometry 520/64/63 (according to fdisk). First I tried file recovery: PhotoRec: no files are found (the images are in CR2 format and I'm using testdisk-6.14-WIP which claims to recognize that format under TIF) dd / ddrescue: they create a 1.07GB image, same problem as above TestDisk: doesn't find any partitions to recover I found a source saying that the correct geometry for this type of SD Card is Heads 255, Sectors/Track 63, Cylinders 1953, so I tried manually setting that geometry in PhotoRec/TestDisk. No improvement. Next I tried formatting the disk with fdisk. After writing and quitting, I ran fdisk again and it reported that the new format hadn't been saved on the disk. I also tried resetting the format/partitions with TestDisk and that failed also. The fdisk log is below. I don't really care about the card, I've already ordered a new SanDisk card. But I'd like to get the data off. Maybe, is there any way to force dd or some other tool to create an image of the disk based on the original geometry and not on what the card "thinks" its geometry is? Or am I missing something?

How to I make my bootcamp partition bootable again?

I'm having a similar problem as everyone else in this posting. I have 5 partitions. 3 of which I created for my Mac OS Lion installation, Windows 7 installation and a 3rd for storage. Everything was running fine for quite sometime until recently. My Windows 7 installation has suddenly stopped booting. Instead of a start up screen I get: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. File: \BOOT\BCD Status: 0xc000000d Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data Mac OS Lion starts up fine. I'm unable to mount my "Bootcamp" partition nor the "Storage" partition. On top of that "Storage" has been renamed to "disk0s5". When I installed Windows 7 it didn't recognize the "Storage" partition that was created in Lion so it merged what it thought was free diskspace (I'm assuming the same space that Mac OS recognized as Storage) to the Root Drive of Windows 7 (Bootcamp). Are you able to assist?

Setting MacBook timezone to UTC

To run my web app, I need to set my timezone to UTC on my MacBook. I can do this temporarily by opening a Konsole and entering sudo ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC /etc/localtime However, my timezone returns to normal when I restart my machine! Any advice? Edit : The response to this question by 'Celada' implies that I can just make my Server UTC. I am using Apache Tomcat 7. Adding to Celada's response, how can I make it UTC?

MacPorts, Fink, etc.

On my Mac OS X (10.5, soon to be 10.6) machine, how would you recommend I install various software that's been ported from Linux? I don't install such software very frequently, but I've been using MacPorts and it always seems quite slow, presumably because it has to compile the packages on-the-fly. I'd much prefer a package management system that has binary packages, saving me the need to compile things every time I want to download something new. I think Fink has binaries for some of the packages, but I usually see MacPorts recommended as the system to use. Which do you think works better and why? (Or is there another system that I haven't heard of?)

Quicksilver doesn't open PDF's like it used to

I've been using Quicksilver for a while now but lately I've been getting this problem that QS doesn't show the Acrobat Reader icon when a PDF is selected, but goes to the "Open With" tab. See the screenshot here: http://skitch.com/niels.bom/n8nw5/google-reader-1000 Is this a bug? Or did I somehow bork a preference setting? I'm using QS B54, 3815, which is the latest AFAIK and Mac OS X 10.5.8. Thanks!

Time Machine doesn't back up some folders/files (that it should)

MacBook Pro 17" (Snow Leopard) -- WD 2TB external drive MacBook Pro 13" (Snow Leopard) -- Seagate 1TB external drive I find that Time Machine sometimes doesn't back up new folders (and the files in them). This occurs both when I choose "Back Up Now" from the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar and in TM's scheduled backups. These are not excluded folders (nor are then in the TM do-not-back-up list); they're perfectly normal folders (at various locations) inside my home folder. The only way to force them to be backed up is to restart the computer (unmounting & mounting the TM external disk does not help). There seems to be a correlation with new folders (i.e., it's more likely to happen that an entire new folder is not backed up), but this may just be observer bias (because those are the folders that I go check to see if they've been backed up). It's not computer dependent (it happens on two different computers). It's not external disk dependent (it happens on two different external disks). It's not time dependent (not restarting for several days does not fix the problem). What does a restart change that these other events don't? I'm considering deleting the /.fseventsd folder (without restarting the computer) to see if that helps. I haven't tried logging out and logging in (without restarting the computer).

I just installed xampp on my mac os x. When I tried start mysql it display a message that mysql is already running on this computer. In order to start mysql stop first mysql. Can't write to file - 'Operation not permitted' WITH sudo

I am having trouble writing to a few files on an external HD. I am using it to store media files as well as my time machine backup. The drive is formatted as HFS+ Journaled, and other files on the drive can be written successfully. Additionally, the time machine backup is working perfectly. Permissions for the file: $ ls -le -@ Parks\ and\ Recreation\ -\ S01E01.avi -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 evantandersen staff 182950496 22 May 2009 Parks and Recreation - S01E01.avi com.apple.FinderInfo 32 Things I have already tried: sudo chflags -N sudo chown myusername sudo chown 666 sudo chgrp staff Checked that the file is not locked (get info in finder) Why can't I modify that file? Even with sudo I can't modify it at all.

Recovering OS X Mail Accounts Lost in Crash

I had a hard crash on my Mac PowerBook and when I restarted, Mail came up with only my MobileMe account still available and I cannot figure out how to restore the other eight email accounts I have. The directories in ~/Library/Mail all seem to be there. I even did an rsync of the modified .plist files from a TimeMachine backup of the directory from before the crash (unfortunately, I was on travel, so the backup is more than a week old and I'd like to try and recover from that point without having to entirely restore from TimeMachine). I also did a fix permissions. So my questions are where exactly is the account information for Mac Mail kept? Any thoughts of what might have caused the failure? Why does only MobileMe come up? Any other thoughts on how to fix things?

RAR Password recovery / hash extraction on OS X

I'm running 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel? Edit I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?

Coda 2 and SCP uploading files with the wrong permission

Currently I have a basic Ubuntu server running a website. The website is for a few students learning HTML/PHP and each student has their own account with a symbolic link to the shared website folder. Since the students are working on the website together, each user needs to be able to modify all the files (index.html for example). So I created a Webdev group containing all of the students with the default umask of 0002 set in their .bashrc (This allows newly created files to be 774). The shared folder is owned by the group Webdev with a chmod g+s so that new files/folders also belong to the group Webdev. The problem is that the students are using an IDE (Coda 2) and when they create a new file or folder using the IDE the file has the permissions of 644 on the server (not group writable). However when I make a new file through connecting with Cyberduck (SFTP client) the file permissions are 664 (as they should be). So I don't understand why Coda would be any different. However, after some trial and error I believe that Coda is first creating the file on local disk and then uploading that file to the server. On a mac by default a newly created file is 644. When the client uploads a file that's already 644 it stays 644 on the server side (umask is kind of useless in this situation). I've also tried creating ACL permissions for that folder but an uploaded file from my mac via SCP doesn't get the default ACL permissions. In Coda there is an option to change file permissions on a transfer. However this option seems to apply a chmod to all files being uploaded or saved. When one of students is modifying a file created by someone else when they try to upload the file or save it Coda tries to also do a chmod but fails because that user isn't the owner of the file. My current solution is using bindfs... I mount the shared web folder and bindfs sets permissions and group ownership of newly created files. However, bindfs seems to be a bit slow and I'm sure there is a better solution. Even if the students ditched Coda 2 and used Mac vim with scp the newly created files on the server would behave the same (644) which is default on the mac. Other options... 1) Either I teach the students to use (ssh/chmod) with their IDE to change their own file permissions when uploading. 2) I make all the students' Macs have the default umask of 0002 which would upload files with the right permissions. 3) Write a corn script to fix the file permissions every 5 to 15 minutes... (This option I think is the worst if students are working together at the same time). Is there any way that I could make all files that are uploaded via SCP have the default file permissions of 664 even though the uploaded file has a lower permission? (After hours of searching I don't think this is possible) I guess a corn script is my best option for novice users. OS X SMB Connection to Windows Server 2008 R2

I support many Macs that connect to an SMB share on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. Occasionally I find that the Mac will try to connect and fail. The connection process will skip asking for credentials and there are none stored in keychain's password section. The server logs will show that the user tried to authenticate with invalid credentials. There are also no lingering connections from the server's point of view. The work around that I've found is to use an invalid username or a username that isn't the user's in the connection string for SMB so smb://domain;user@server/share instead of 'smb://server/share' this will force it to use the username I specified which the client doesn't have anything stored for. So it will then pop up the login window where the user changes the username to the correct one and user her password to connect happily. Specific computer in question: 15" MBP running Snow Leopard (10.6.7 or 10.6.8)

Install Qt for iOS SDK The Qt for iOS SDK has been configured to be installed in the default Xcode installation location /Developer. It is not possible to install the SDK into another location without first rebuilding it, as the install location is contained within the qmake executable, and that is built as part of Qt. To install the Qt for iOS SDK, open ‘Terminal’ and type the following from the command-line: tar –xf qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-xxx.tar.gz –C /Developer (where xxx is an identifier which can be used to determine the build of the iOS SDK eg. arm7--nossl) This will install the Qt for iOS SDK into the following path: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/share/qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0

Java compiler error: Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor

I am trying to compile HelloWorld in Java under Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and I get this compiler error: java[51692:903] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/Inquisitor It happens when I am using terminal command javac and when I am trying to do this in NetBeans. I was trying to open folder "Inquisitor", but I have no access to folder, even if I login as root user. What is going on?
