  • How can I password-protect a Mac shared folder on a Windows workgroup?

    We have a Mac-mini running 10.5.8 which already acts as a fileserver for our simple Windows (mixed XP/Vista) workgroup. The Mac-mini is on the same workgroup and the files are shared via SMB, FTP, and AFP. Basic file-sharing is working, and has been for some time. We'd now like to add an additional directory/share which can be secured by a password so that only a small number on the network have access. Is this possible? I've already tried creating the additional folder on the mac system, adding it to the shared folders, and limiting it to a specific "shared user", however it's not possible to log-in from an XP machine. Adding a sub-directory to the currently working share and giving limiting it's access to the shared user doesn't work either.

    I've got 11.10 on a desktop machine with two users. Both users have "Password" set to "Not asked on login" in Users Settings. At startup, either user can log in without a password. But once both users are logged in, it takes a password to switch between users. In previous Ubuntus, you could override this by setting /desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_lock_screen to True in gconf-editor. That is ignored in the Gnome 3 / Unity era. Does anyone know a way to disable the password prompt when switching between users in Oneiric?

    sudo (Which I have configured to ask for a password) is rejecting my password (as if I mis-typed it) I am absolutely not typing it incorrectly. I have changed the password temporarily to alphabetic characters only, and it looks fine in plaintext, in the same terminal. I have my username configured thus: myusername ALL=(ALL) ALL I am using my password, NOT the root password, which are distinct. Just to be sure, I've tried both (even though I know the root password is not what I should use) - neither work. I have added myself to the group 'wheel' additionally, and included the following line: %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. I don't know what would cause it to act as though it was accepting my password, but then reject it. I have no trouble logging in with the same password, either at terminal shells, or through the X11 login manager.

  • Why is it possible to change the password of an admin user on linux?

    A few days ago, a friend of mine, wanted to show me that he can use my linux even if I don't tell him my password. He entered in GRUB, selected the recovery mode option. My first problem is that he already had access to my files (read only). He tried to do passwd but failed. Then he did some kind of remount (I guess that gave him write rights) and after that he was able to change my password. Why is this possible? I personally see it a security issue. Where I work there are several people that use linux and neither of them have a BIOS password set or some other kind of security wall.

The list items are floated right and sized due to an anchor tag inside them with a roll over. The last element is given a specific size to suck up any extra space. Take the same code to a Mac; Safari/ firefox are displaying the menu to be too short and the only thing i can point to is that the fonts may be smaller in widths. The width is currently set to 970px. My question is: How can i get it to display at the same widths without specifying exact widths for each list item? Any help would be appreciated.     I've been using svn on the command line for 5+ years, but I'm thinking of switching to GUI. The two kings of Mac subversion apps seem to be Versions and Cornerstone. Most of the reviews/comments I've seen comparing the two are from way back in 2008, when Cornerstone was first released. It's now 2010, and both apps have undergone significant changes. I've been running trial copies of both apps for the past week, and I still can't make up my mind. Which would you recommend and why?

    Hi, I've tried to user HandVU with OpenCV but when I tried to run "hvOpenCV config/default.conductor" I get a "Segmentation fault".   • Question about mail merge in DesignPro 1.0.1 for mac

    I'm using Avery DesignPro v. 1.0.1 for mac to print out address labels using a mail merge. There are two columns for addresses (Address1 and Address2), but for most of the entries on the list, Address2 is blank. When I do the mail merge, I get several address labels with a blank line between Address1 and the City, State line because there's no Address2 for those entries. Does anyone know of a way to get DesignPro to ignore Address2 completely if there's no value there, or will I have to go through and manually edit each label to delete the extra blank line?

    Hello, A Facebook Sync app filled the address fields of my Mac Address Book contacts with their cities. Having tons of people who have useless addresses makes it difficult to search by people on Google Maps app (ending up scrolling through many many people- I only want to see those who have proper addresses entered). I want to clear all the home address fields in my address book using applescript. I wrote something small but couldn't get it to work, probably needs some help from somebody who knows applescript :) tell application "Address Book" repeat with this_person in every person repeat with this_address in every address of this_person if label of this_address is "home" then remove this_address from addresses of this_person end if end repeat end repeat end tell I tried to deduct the logic of multiple addresses/phones from other scripts but could only find adding them, not removing them. When i want to compile a SQL Client Program, it aborts with this Error Message ld: library not found for -lmysqlclient collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I compile with this command: g++ -I /usr/local/mysql/include/ -L /usr/local/mysql/lib/ -lmysqlclient main.cpp I've tried the Headers and Librarys in different locations - no effect I've downloaded the headers and the Library from an other Destination - Same effect as before Any Ideas what i am doing wrong?     Hi All, I am using LSOpenItemsWithRole() to open any file from my appication. It works fine for all files which has a default application to get opened on Mac, but for the files which cannot be open with any default application this method returns an error kLSApplicationNotFoundErr and does nothing. For such cases I want my application to launch the "Choose Application" dialog box, so that end user can choose any application from there to open the file. This dialog box pops up whenever any such file is directly opened by double clickig. Is there is any direct API call to do the same? any help will be appreciated, Thanks in advance! Manish

    I know that you can make a virtual network interface in Windows (see here), and in Linux it is also pretty easy with ip-aliases, but does something similar exist for Mac OS X? I've been looking for loopback adapters, virtual interfaces and couldn't find a good solution. You can create a new interface in the networking panel, based on an existing interface, but it will not act as a real fully functional interface (if the original interface is inactive, then the derived one is also inactive). This scenario is needed when working in a completely disconnected situation. Even then, it makes sense to have networking capabilities when running servers in a VMWare installation. Those virtual machines can be reached by their IP address, but not by their DNS name, even if I run a DNS server in one of those virtual machines. By configuring an interface to use the virtual DNS server, I thought I could test some DNS scenario's. Unfortunately, no interface is resolving DNS names if none of them are inactive...

    I have set up my project for using Google Toolbox for Mac as described on official wiki. And everything is working as expected. For core data usage I have created a 'database' class that uses for final application SQLite storage (this is done based on Xcode template code). For unit tests I have created separate init method for 'database' to use in memory storage (storage url is [NSURL URLWithString:@"memory://store"] and type NSInMemoryStoreType). Without adding my model file (*.xcdatamodel) to unit tests target, test fail in expected place with message: executeFetchRequest:error: A fetch request must have an entity. If I add model file to the test target, then test is executed as expected (core data part looks OK), but after tests execution I get: RunIPhoneUnitTest.sh: line 123: 9487 Segmentation fault "$TARGET_BUILD_DIR/$EXECUTABLE_PATH" -RegisterForSystemEvents Command /bin/sh failed with exit code 139 This problem does not looks directly related to core data, but only happens if model file is added to target. Any pointers on resolving this issue would be appreciated!

    I tried to install the following dependencies for PyGTK 2.16.0 (the Python GIMP Tool Kit) on Mac OS 10.6.3: glib 2.25.5 gettext-0.18 libiconv-1.13.1 When I tried to install glib, I got the following error message: gconvert.c:55:2: error: #error GNU libiconv not in use but included iconv.h is from libiconv The libiconv web page talks about a circular dependency between gettext and libiconv---build one, then build the other, then build the first again. I tried to do this, though possibly incorrectly. (Will the following work: make distclean; ./configure; make; sudo make install?) The author of a posting had the same problem, and he solved it by installing libiconv-1.13.1. Could anyone explain the error in more detail, and how to correct it?

  • sIFR Doesn't Work in FF3 Mac.

    I thought it might be something I was doing wrong, but I am not seeing it working on any site, including Novemberborn.net. Any Ideas? The CSS is loaded, so the headlines are hidden, and then it is like the JS isn't loaded at all. Could this be a browser detection issue? I am using firefox 3 with latest flash player version 10. I have heard the complaint from other Mac users as well. Works on every other browser... EDIT: I removed the CSS to hide, it still doesn't work. After a pause, it loads the JS and removes the headlines, but doesn't replace them.
