  • Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

    - by ClickClickClick
There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)

  • non-mapped virtual memory & total number of connections

    - by tszming
We have two MongoDB data nodes (replica set) - Primary & Secondary. I noticed that the non-mapped virtual memory is relatively high and wondering if they are hurting our MongoDB performance (The server usually peaked at around 6-7K queries per sec). In MMS, it was stated: "The most common case of usage of a high amount of memory for non-mapped is that there are very many connections to the database." So we checked the memory usage with db.serverStatus().mem in our Secondary: { "bits" : 64, "resident" : 6846, "virtual" : 416797, "supported" : true, "mapped" : 205549, "mappedWithJournal" : 411098, "note" : "virtual minus mapped is large. could indicate a memory leak" } Note: We are using 2.0.4 and now the default stack size should be 1MB per connection. The current number of connections is around 1.1K, but the non-mapped virtual memory (virtual-mappedWithJournal) is around 5699 MB. The trend is quite stable so I can't say there is a leak here, but where is the memory gone? Any idea?

  • Change Google Chrome's Process model?

    - by mobius42
See here: http://imgur.com/lKffI.png Does anyone here know how to stop Chrome doing this? Chrome seems to group all tabs I open through the same page into one process. If I copy and paste the links individually into separate tabs, it creates new processes, but when I just middle click links, it groups them into one. I want to force Chrome to create a new process for every tab because when one page locks up, it freezes pretty much all the tabs I have open and if one of the tabs crashes, it takes the rest with it. You can apparently alter Chrome's process model to one called "--process-per-tab" which seems to be what I'm looking for, but when I try and open Chrome with this argument via the terminal, it doesn't work. It's likely I'm not using the correct command; what I tried was: /Applications/"Google Chrome.app"/Contents/MacOS/"Google Chrome" --process-per-tab I'm on OSX and using the latest dev build 5.0.396.0.

  • In terms of load handling, which is better: one server or two of equivalent power?

    - by seldary
My goal is to figure out if i'm better off with one strong server, or multiple weaker servers with a load balancer. Does the fact of splitting the load between servers have an effect on the total load my website could take? It's hard to single that out, because there are of course a lot of parameters that affect the results, so some assumptions: Putting failover considerations aside - I know it matters, but for the sake of the question's simplicity, lets assume nothing fails. The servers in the multiple servers option have an accumulated "power" equivalent to the one server option (about the same amount of cores and RAM space). If that is too theoretical, here is a concrete question that could help: Suppose I have several instances of exactly the same server - lets call it S. Suppose that server S can serve a load of up to X calls per time unit. Will two S servers with a load balancer serve 2X calls per time unit? significantly more? significantly less?

  • Trying to find a good filehost [closed]

    - by user67481
I'm looking for a good filehost that I can use to link downloads on my blog (personally created files, no copyright infringement). Been looking at mediafire, but I'm not sure what else is out there that would meet my needs. Ideally wanting something that has no files-per-day-per-user limits, can host individual files of at least 500MB each, and has very little hassle for the users who download from them. I'll pay for a 'premium' or whatever level account if necessary. Any good suggestions? Or will mediafire be my best bet for this?

  • Please Help Me Optimize This

    - by Zero
I'm trying to optimize my .htaccess file to avoid performance issues. In my .htaccess file I have something that looks like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} bigbadbot [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot1 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot2 [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] The first rewrite rule (bigbadbot) handles about 100 requests per second, whereas the other two rewrite rules below it only handle a few requests per hour. My question is, since the first rewrite rule (bigbadbot) handles about 99% of the traffic would it be better to place these rules into two separate rulesets? For example: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} bigbadbot [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot1 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot2 [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] Can someone tell me what would be better in terms of performance? Has anyone ever benchmarked this? Thanks!

  • Distribute values within a date range

    - by JOT
I really need some help with Excel. I have a specific data that contains tasks, amount per tasks with start and end dates respectively. Would like to distribute the data within a range data to quantify how much per month: I have been using the Sumproduct function =SUMPRODUCT(I$3:I$60,--(J$3:J$60>=$A2),--(K$3:K$60<=$B2)) where, I$3:I$60 is the Load or value to add; J$3:J$60 is the specific start date; K$3:K$60 is the specific end date; And the range to distribute the data is between A2(as the start date range) and B2(as the end date range). I am unable to get the distribution for specific end dates that exceed the range distribution (or K>B) returning 0 as result.

  • Introducing SSIS Reporting Pack for SQL Server code-named Denali

    - by jamiet
In recent blog posts I have introduced the new SSIS Catalog that is forthcoming in SQL Server Code-named Denali: What's new in SSIS in Denali Introduction to SSIS Projects in Denali Parameters in SSIS In Denali SSIS Server, Catalogs, Environments and Environment Variables in SSIS in Denali The SSIS Catalog is responsible for executing SSIS packages and also for capturing the metadata from those executions. However, at the time of writing there is no mechanism provided to view analyse and drill into that metadata and that is the reason that I am, in this blog post, introducing a suite of SSIS Catalog reports called the SSIS Reporting Pack which you can download from my SkyDrive at http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/SSIS%20Reporting%20Pack/SSISReportingPack%20v0.1.zip. In this first release the SSIS Reporting Pack includes five reports: Catalog – A high-level summary of all activity in the Catalog Folders – A summary of activity in each Catalog Folder Folder – Project-level activity per single Folder Executions – A visualisation of all executions per Folder/Project/Package/Environment or subset thereof Execution – Information about an individual execution Here is a screenshot of the Executions report: Notice that the SSIS Reporting Pack provides a visual overview of all executions in the Catalog. Each execution is represented as a bar on the bar chart, the success or otherwise of each execution is indicated by the colour of the bar and the execution time is indicated by the bar height. I have recorded a video that gives an overview of the SSIS Reporting which I have embedded below. If you are having any trouble viewing the video go see it at http://vimeo.com/17617974 I must stress that this is a very early version of the SSIS Reporting Pack and I am expecting it to change a lot over the coming year. I am very keen to get some feedback about this, specifically: let me know if anything does not work as you expect give me your feature requests The easiest way to get hold of of me for now is within the comments section of this blog post. That’s all for now. I hope the SSIS Reporting Pack proves useful and I look forward to hearing your feedback. Lastly, that download link again: http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/self.aspx/Public/SSIS%20Reporting%20Pack/SSISReportingPack%20v0.1.zip. @jamiet

  • Obama’s win and the geeky stuff behind his success

    - by Gopinath
Mr. Obama is elected as President of United States for the second term with a great majority. Here are few geeky bytes associated with Mr.Obama’s success and the world records he set up Obama Creates New Records on Twitter and Facebook – Just after winning the race for president, Barak Obama setup world records on Twitter & Facebook. His tweet “Four more years” re-tweeted more than 770K times and his Facebook post received 3.8 million likes. Twitter Kills the Fail Whale, One Tweet at a Time – Twitter handled insane user loads with millions of tweets related to election and proved that it’s platform is now more robust than ever. In a post on the company’s engineering blog, Twitter said people sent 31 million election-related tweets on Tuesday alone. From 8:11 p.m. to 9:11 p.m. P.S.T., Twitter processed an average 9,965 tweets per second, with a one-second peak of 15,107 tweets per second at 8:20 p.m., the company said. Obama’s win a big vindication for Nate Silver, king of the quants – Nate Silver, a statistician and blogger was spot on in predicting Obama’s win many weeks. He did not depend on astrology or surveys to predict Obama’s success. He used big data and statistical analysis to project votes. CNET says “Despite some incredulous political pundits, the FiveThirtyEight statistician appears to have correctly predicted the winner in all 50 states in the presidential election” Inside the Secret World of the Data Crunchers Who Helped Obama Win – Team Obama used big data and analytical systems to win the elections!! Barack Obama Goes On Reddit For Last Campaign Stop Of Political Career – Reditt is getting a lot of Obama’s attention these days. He is quite often stopping by Reditt to say hi to the nerds & geeks hanging out there. His chat with nerds on Reddit has paid rich dividends.

  • Auto-Suggest via &lsquo;Trie&rsquo; (Pre-fix Tree)

    - by Strenium
Auto-Suggest (Auto-Complete) “thing” has been around for a few years. Here’s my little snippet on the subject. For one of my projects, I had to deal with a non-trivial set of items to be pulled via auto-suggest used by multiple concurrent users. Simple, dumb iteration through a list in local cache or back-end access didn’t quite cut it. Enter a nifty little structure, perfectly suited for storing and matching verbal data: “Trie” (http://tinyurl.com/db56g) also known as a Pre-fix Tree: “Unlike a binary search tree, no node in the tree stores the key associated with that node; instead, its position in the tree defines the key with which it is associated. All the descendants of a node have a common prefix of the string associated with that node, and the root is associated with the empty string. Values are normally not associated with every node, only with leaves and some inner nodes that correspond to keys of interest.” This is a very scalable, performing structure. Though, as usual, something ‘fast’ comes at a cost of ‘size’; fortunately RAM is more plentiful today so I can live with that. I won’t bore you with the detailed algorithmic performance here - Google can do a better job of such. So, here’s C# implementation of all this. Let’s start with individual node: Trie Node /// <summary> /// Contains datum of a single trie node. /// </summary> public class AutoSuggestTrieNode {     public char Value { get; set; }       /// <summary>     /// Gets a value indicating whether this instance is leaf node.     /// </summary>     /// <value>     ///     <c>true</c> if this instance is leaf node; otherwise, a prefix node <c>false</c>.     /// </value>     public bool IsLeafNode { get; private set; }       public List<AutoSuggestTrieNode> DescendantNodes { get; private set; }         /// <summary>     /// Initializes a new instance of the <see cref="AutoSuggestTrieNode"/> class.     /// </summary>     /// <param name="value">The phonetic value.</param>     /// <param name="isLeafNode">if set to <c>true</c> [is leaf node].</param>     public AutoSuggestTrieNode(char value = ' ', bool isLeafNode = false)     {         Value = value;         IsLeafNode = isLeafNode;           DescendantNodes = new List<AutoSuggestTrieNode>();     }       /// <summary>     /// Gets the descendants of the pre-fix node, if any.     /// </summary>     /// <param name="descendantValue">The descendant value.</param>     /// <returns></returns>     public AutoSuggestTrieNode GetDescendant(char descendantValue)     {         return DescendantNodes.FirstOrDefault(descendant => descendant.Value == descendantValue);     } }   Quite self-explanatory, imho. A node is either a “Pre-fix” or a “Leaf” node. “Leaf” contains the full “word”, while the “Pre-fix” nodes act as indices used for matching the results.   Ok, now the Trie: Trie Structure /// <summary> /// Contains structure and functionality of an AutoSuggest Trie (Pre-fix Tree) /// </summary> public class AutoSuggestTrie {     private readonly AutoSuggestTrieNode _root = new AutoSuggestTrieNode();       /// <summary>     /// Adds the word to the trie by breaking it up to pre-fix nodes + leaf node.     /// </summary>     /// <param name="word">Phonetic value.</param>     public void AddWord(string word)     {         var currentNode = _root;         word = word.Trim().ToLower();           for (int i = 0; i < word.Length; i++)         {             var child = currentNode.GetDescendant(word[i]);               if (child == null) /* this character hasn't yet been indexed in the trie */             {                 var newNode = new AutoSuggestTrieNode(word[i], word.Count() - 1 == i);                   currentNode.DescendantNodes.Add(newNode);                 currentNode = newNode;             }             else                 currentNode = child; /* this character is already indexed, move down the trie */         }     }         /// <summary>     /// Gets the suggested matches.     /// </summary>     /// <param name="word">The phonetic search value.</param>     /// <returns></returns>     public List<string> GetSuggestedMatches(string word)     {         var currentNode = _root;         word = word.Trim().ToLower();           var indexedNodesValues = new StringBuilder();         var resultBag = new ConcurrentBag<string>();           for (int i = 0; i < word.Trim().Length; i++)  /* traverse the trie collecting closest indexed parent (parent can't be leaf, obviously) */         {             var child = currentNode.GetDescendant(word[i]);               if (child == null || word.Count() - 1 == i)                 break; /* done looking, the rest of the characters aren't indexed in the trie */               indexedNodesValues.Append(word[i]);             currentNode = child;         }           Action<AutoSuggestTrieNode, string> collectAllMatches = null;         collectAllMatches = (node, aggregatedValue) => /* traverse the trie collecting matching leafNodes (i.e. "full words") */             {                 if (node.IsLeafNode) /* full word */                     resultBag.Add(aggregatedValue); /* thread-safe write */                   Parallel.ForEach(node.DescendantNodes, descendandNode => /* asynchronous recursive traversal */                 {                     collectAllMatches(descendandNode, String.Format("{0}{1}", aggregatedValue, descendandNode.Value));                 });             };           collectAllMatches(currentNode, indexedNodesValues.ToString());           return resultBag.OrderBy(o => o).ToList();     }         /// <summary>     /// Gets the total words (leafs) in the trie. Recursive traversal.     /// </summary>     public int TotalWords     {         get         {             int runningCount = 0;               Action<AutoSuggestTrieNode> traverseAllDecendants = null;             traverseAllDecendants = n => { runningCount += n.DescendantNodes.Count(o => o.IsLeafNode); n.DescendantNodes.ForEach(traverseAllDecendants); };             traverseAllDecendants(this._root);               return runningCount;         }     } }   Matching operations and Inserts involve traversing the nodes before the right “spot” is found. Inserts need be synchronous since ordering of data matters here. However, matching can be done in parallel traversal using recursion (line 64). Here’s sample usage:   [TestMethod] public void AutoSuggestTest() {     var autoSuggestCache = new AutoSuggestTrie();       var testInput = @"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Integer nec odio. Praesent libero.                 Sed cursus ante dapibus diam. Sed nisi. Nulla quis sem at nibh elementum imperdiet. Duis sagittis ipsum. • /users/tags should contain scores

    - by Sean Patrick Floyd
I am implementing some simple JavaScript/bookmarklet based apps that show some reputation info, including the score in the User's top tags (roughly based on this previous bookmarklet of mine). Now I can get a user's top tags (using the API), and I can also get the per-tag score if the user is logged in, by dynamically parsing the tag's top users page. But it costs me one AJAX request per tag and I have to download 10+k to extract a single numeric value. It would save a lot of traffic if the tags in <api>/users/<userid>/tags had a score field. The data seems to be there, after all the top users pages use it, so it would just be a question of exposing the data. Suggested structure: "tags": [ { "name": { "description": "name of the tag", "values": "string", "optional": false, "suggested_buffer_size": 25 }, "score": { "description": "tag score, sum of up votes for answers on non-wiki questions", "values": "32-bit signed integer", "optional": false }, "count": { "description": "tag count, exact meaning depends on context", "values": "32-bit signed integer", "optional": false }, "restricted_to": { "description": "user types that can make use of this tag, lack of this field indicates it is useable by all", "values": "one of anonymous, unregistered, registered, or moderator", "optional": true }, "fulfills_required": { "description": "indicates whether this tag is one of those that is required to be on a post", "values": "boolean", "optional": false }, "user_id": { "description": "user associated with this tag, depends on context", "values": "32-bit signed integer", "optional": true } } ]

  • SPARC64 VII+ Processor Core License Factor Reduced by 33%

    - by john.shell
The Oracle processor core license factor has been a popular topic the last few months.  For those partners new to Oracle software licensing, the processor core license factor determines the number licensed CPUs that are required when running Oracle software (those charged on a per-CPU basis) on multi-core processors. My last entry talked about the core factor reduction for our T3 processor.  The core license factor for our newly announced SPARC64 VII+ processor is 0.5, which is a 33% reduction from the 0.75 rate used with our SPARC64 VI and VII processors. What does this mean for our partners?  Increased opportunity.  This change, similar to our T3-based systems, means that our hardware is the preferred platform for Oracle software. Still a little dizzy on the breadth of Oracle's software offering?  Do a simple scan of Oracle's software price lists. Consider this your target market. This change allows you to focus on total solution price or price/performance, not server prices or per core performance (a standard IBM sales tactic). That's the offensive side of the game.  Don't forget your defense.  One of the biggest customer benefits around the M-Series is investment protection.  The combination of a simple processor/board upgrade, along with a reduction in processor core license factor, makes upgrading one of the best financial moves for our customers.    One reminder.  The update to the processor core license factor only applies to the new VII+ processor - NOT the SPARC64 VI or VII processors.  You can find the official table here.

  • Flash Technology Can Revolutionize your IT Infrastructure

    - by kimberly.billings
A recent article in the Data Center Journal written by Mark Teter outlines how flash is becoming a disruptive technology in the data center and how it will soon replace HDDs in the storage hierarchy. As Teter explains, the drivers behind this trend are lower cost/performance and power savings; flash is over 100x faster for reads than the fastest HDD, and while it is expensive, it can produce dramatic reductions in the cost of performance as measured in Input/Outputs per second (IOPS). What's more, flash consumes 1/5th the power of HDD, so it's faster AND greener. Teter writes, "when appropriately used, flash turns the current economics of IT performance on its head. That's disruptive." Exadata Smart Flash Cache in the Sun Oracle Database Machine makes intelligent use of flash storage to deliver extreme performance for OLTP and mixed workloads. It intelligently caches data from the Oracle Database replacing slow mechanical I/O operations to disk with very rapid flash memory operations. Exadata Smart Flash Cache is the fundamental technology of the Sun Oracle Database Machine that enables the processing of up to 1 million random I/O operations per second (IOPS), and the scanning of data within Exadata storage at up to 50 GB/second. Are you incorporating flash into your storage strategy? Let us know! Read more: "Flash technology can revolutionize your IT infrastructure", The Data Center Journal, March 30, 2010. • The ship "shudders" in scrolling Asteroids

    - by Ciaran
In my Asteroids game the user can scroll through space. When scrolling, the ship is drawn in the centre of the window. I use interpolation. I scroll the window uing glOrtho, centering it around the centre of the ship. On my first machine (7 years old, Windows XP, NVIDIA), I am doing 50 updates and 76 frames per second. This is smooth. My other machine an old compaq laptop (Pentium III) with Linux and Radeon OpenGL driver delivers 50 updates and 30 frames per second. The ship regularly seems to "shudder" back and forth when at maximum thrust. When you position the mouse cursor beside the ship it is obvious that its relative position in the window changes. Also, the stars seem blurred into short "lines". Playing the game in non-scrolling mode, the ship moves within the window, glOrtho is therefore not called repeatedly and there is no problem. I suspect a bug in my positioning of the ship and the window but I have dumped out these values and they seem to only go forward, not forward-back-forward. The driver does support double buffering. I guess if it is my bug I need to slow the frame-rate down to debug properly. My question: is this an obvious driver bug or is the slower machine uncovering a bug in my stuff and if so, some debugging tips would be appreciated. I am drawing in world co-ordinates and letting OpenGL do the scaling and translation so if I had a quick way of verifying what pixel co-ordinates OpenGL produces for the ship centre, that would help clarify this.

  • Wheaties Fuel = Wheaties FAIL

    - by Steve Bargelt
Are you kidding me? What a load of nutritional CRAP. Don’t buy this product. Just don’t do it. They are just like Wheaties with more sugar and fat. Awesome just what we need more sugar!! Okay now I’m not against carbs… I’m really not. Being a cyclist I realize the importance of carbohydrates in the diet… but let’s be realistic here. Even though the commercials for Wheaties Fuel say they are for athletes you know that what General Mills is really hoping for is that kids will see Payton Manning, Albert Pujols and KG and buy this cereal and eat a ton of it for breakfast. Sad, really. I’ve watched all the videos and read all the propaganda on the Wheaties Fuel web site and no where do they talk about why they added sugar and fat the original Wheaties. There is a lot of double-speak by Dr. Ivy about “understanding the needs of athletes.” I had to laugh – in one of the videos Dr. Ivy even says that he thinks the "new Wheaties will have even more fiber! Wrong! My bad... there is 5g of fiber not 3g per serving. Just  Way more sugar. A serving of FROSTED FLAKES has less sugar per serving!!!   Wheaties Fuel Wheaties Frosted Flakes Honey Nut Cheerios Quaker Oatmeal Serving Size 3/4 cup 3/4 cup 3/4 cup 3/4 cup 3/4 cup Calories 210 100 110 110 225 Fat 3g .5g 0g 1.5g 4.5g Protein 3g 3g 1g 2g 7.5g Carbohydrates 46g 22g 27g 22g 40.5g Sugars 14g 4g 11g 9g 1.5g Fiber 5g 3g 1g 2g 6g   In reality it might not be a bad pre-workout meal but for a normal day-in-day-out breakfast is just seems to have too much sugar - especially when you bump the serving size up to 1 to 1.5 cups and add milk! I’ll stick with Oatmeal, thank you very much.

  • Is Tax Localization a good use for Workflow Foundation?

    - by JustinDoesWork
Scenario: We have both Winforms and MVC code that is being used to work on a nation wide multi-user platform that does lots of logistics for lots of users. Tax rules change per state and even per city or county. These tax rules make a huge difference for our industry. The other issue is that rules can change based on legislation. The system will have to handle cases where before a date it works one way and then different after that date. This changeover will need to be entered into the system and tested before that date comes. Proposed Solution: Use Workflow Foundation to create a time based system where our users can change and add rules that change the way taxes are calculated. Question: I have not used Workflow Foundation and searching has returned books to look at but not a lot of examples of people using this technology successfully. Is my scenario a good use of Workflow Foundation?(I think so.) If you have any experience with Workflow Foundation, any tips on making this work well?

  • What groupware/project-management apps (preferably self-hosted webapp) do you recommend for a small dev shop?

    - by HedgeMage
I run a small Drupal consulting shop and we've been trying different groupware solutions for what seems like ages, yet nothing we've found seems to be a good fit. We don't need CRM-overkill such as SugarCRM offers -- it's just too much for our small size. We do need git integration (at a minimum, an easy way to associate commits with issues) Time tracking on configurable or 15m increments per-project issue tracking billing (incl. recurring billing for support contracts, etc) some sort of per-project notes/wiki for things like login credentials, client contact info, etc. Contact logging (Client foo called at 2:20pm and asked to add bar to the spec, signed addendum with pricing due to client NLT CoB today, to be returned by CoB tomorrow) Open source solutions are greatly preferred to closed ones Most of all, it should be very efficient to use. Several solutions just fell out of use here because they required too many clicks for simple, frequent tasks like logging time spent on an issue or noting a call from a client. It shouldn't take 20 minutes to make a note. Edit: I almost forgot to mention: we're a mixed Linux/Mac shop with no Windows users.

  • AT&T’s new prepaid plan for smartphones –$65 for 1 GB data and unlimited calls, text

    - by Gopinath
AT&T is stepping up competition in prepaid mobile plans offering and trying to attract more smartphone customers who are not interested to lock in with expensive contracts. Today AT&T announced a new prepaid plan for smartphone customers which offers 1 GB of , unlimited calls and text for $65 a month. Compared to existing plans that offers same , the new plan saves $10 per month and rates are comparable to T-Mobile prepaid service. The new plan will be available to all prepaid customers from October 7, 2012. I’m using AT&T prepaid plan for the past 3 months and paying $75 for 1 GB data, unlimited calls. Few days ago I did some analysis on prepaid plans offered by various network providers and found T-Mobile has cheapest plans that suits my needs – $60 for 2 GB data,  unlimited calls and texts. Even though T Mobile’s network coverage is not as great as AT&T in the area where I live, I planned to switch to save $15 per month. After reading today’s announcement, I don’t think that I’ll switch to T Mobile for saving $5 + 1 GB of extra data.  Thanks AT&T for the new plan, I’ll stay with you for now. via engadget

  • what is a normal developer to pageview ratio?

    - by Anthony Shull
I work for an e-commerce site that has lately been shedding its workforce. I was hired ten months ago as a UI Developer. At that time we had three other developers. One was the technical lead who had been with the company for 10 years. The other two were server-side developers who had been there for 10 and 3.5 years respectively. In ten months, the technical lead left for a better position, one developer was laid off, and the other very recently left. So, I am now the only developer on staff. We have one DBA and one network administrator. They are currently looking to hire another developer but are not willing to pay enough to hire a senior person. I consider myself a junior developer with two years of experience. I have argued that we need to hire at least one senior developer and another junior developer if we're going to keep our current site operational (not to mention develop new features)...even if that means laying off staff in other departments. Right now we get 6.5 million pageviews per month, and I feel like 3.2 million pageviews per developer must be incredibly abnormal. My question is then: what is a normal developer to pageview ratio? Are there any industry standards or literature on the subject that I can use to argue for more staff?
