  • ASP.NET "Object reference not set..." error

    Hi, I have a website written using ASP.NET. We have a development machine and a deployment server. The site works great on the development machine, but when is transfered (using simple FTP Upload) generates strange behavior. It starts working just fine, but after a while stops working and throws an exception "Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.". The deal is that the absolute path of the website on the development machine is different than on the deployment server (and why should they be similar?) and the exact error is: Exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at SOMEPROJECT_Objects.Player..ctor(Int32 PlayerID) in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\SOMEPROJECTSolution\ALLPROJECT\SOMEPROJECT_Objects\Player.cs:line 123 at SOMEPROJECT_GameLayer.M_Game.PlayerActiveGame(Int32 PlayerID) in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\SOMEPROJECTSolution\ALLPROJECT\SOMEPROJECT_GameLayer\M_Game.cs:line 85 at Web.getsms.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\SOMEPROJECTSolution\ALLPROJECT\SOMEPROJECT-sms\Web\getsms.aspx.cs:line 59 The address that it is looking for is the address on the DEVELOPMENT machine, where as the site now resides on the deployment server.   • Streaming PDF via invocation of HTTPHandler using $.get into object element

    What I am trying to do is invoke an HTTPHandler via the $.get method of jQuery which will stream back a PDF and display it in a web page using an object element. My previous method of setting the src attribute of an IFrame to be the result of a handler invocation works, but I would like cross-browser completion notification, so have moved to using $.get(). Sample code: function buttonClick() { $.get("/PDFHandler.ashx", {}, function(data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest) { var pdfObjectString = "<object data='' type='application/pdf' width='600' height='600'></object>"; var pdfObject = $(pdfObjectString); pdfObject.attr("data", data); $("#container").append(pdfObject); }); As you can see, I am attempting to stick the 'data' variable into an object element. This is not working (no error, PDF just doesn't display), presumably because the data that comes back is binary, yet the attr() method expects a string (I think). My question is thus: how can I invoke an HTTPHandler via $.get and somehow assign the data from the callback to the data attribute of an object?

    Reading a book I have found the following statement: (Object) Behaviors answer either of two questions: What does this object do (for me)? or What can I do to this object? In the case of an orange, it doesn’t do a whole lot, but we can do things to it. One behavior is that it can be eaten. In my understanding of object behaviour the statement above is correct regarding the first question and is incorrect in case of the second. However, I often see classes with methods like Orange::eat(), and this makes me uncertain about my design skills. So I would like to ask is it a design mistake to give oranges a behaviour eat? (oranges and eat are used just for example)

    I want to bind POSTed form values to parameters in my WCF operation in the same way that ASP.Net MVC allows me to do. So, for example if my form has "customer.Name" and "customer.Age" parameters, I want to make a standard HTML POST to a named endpoint/operation that takes a customer parameter and have it instantiated and populated like MVC can do... It looks like I can use WebInvoke and its UriTemplate property to map simple parameters - does anyone know if a more MVC-like model-binding way is possible? Thanks, Mark.

I'm not sure which is the best way to go about creating and populating my custom javascript object.     I remember reading a paper a long time ago that talked about object-oriented programming. I believe that this was from the early 1980s or perhaps even before then. This was at the time when object-oriented programming was still done through pre-processors, and one thing that stuck with me is this: it argued that you could write code in either procedural or object-oriented fashion, and after preprocessing/compiling, you would end up with the exact same machine code. Does anybody know which paper I'm talking about?

    Objects oriented databases seem like a really cool idea to me, no need to worry about mapping your domain model to your database model, no messing around with sql or ORM tools. The way I understand it, relational DBs offer some advantages when there is massive amounts of data, and searching an indexing need to be done. To my mind 99% of websites are not massive, and enterprise issues never need to be thought about, so why arn't OO DBs more widely used?

I have the databinding object 'A' and another object 'B'. public class SomeProxy { public SomeProxy(BindingSource A) { var b = new B(); } } public class B { public int SomePropertyFromA{get;set;} //Some autocalculated propeties, that are based on SomePropertyFromA //I want to reculculate them, when the SomePropertyFromA will be changed } 'B' object culculates some values, based on the property 'a' of the 'A' object. I want to bind property in object 'B' to the same property 'a' in 'A'. It's need to handle on changes of the 'a' property, because some UI controls are binded to 'B'-s properties. How can I do this?
