• Are there design-time watch windows for Visual Studio 2008/2010?

  There are many times when I need to test a little snippet of .net code but rebuilding and publishing the entire project or writing a suite of unit tests just seems like overkill. For example, I am writing a regular expression right now and I want to see if it the pattern is matching on the right parts. I could go and find a million other utilities that do that sort of thing, but that is not exactly my point. FireBug has an exact analogue to what I want - the FireBug console. There is a text box where the user can enter some JavaScript and FireBug will execute it on the spot and display the return value. I would love to be able to enter something like (new Regex("b+")).Replace("abc", "x") and see the results without having to do all the overhead. Does VS have anything like this?

  Hi, I would like to get validation messages for validation controls from resource files. I know I can do that easily by following code snippet. <%$ Resources:[filename prefix,]resource-key %> or <asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" meta:resourcekey="resource-key-prefix" /> But I would also like to parameterized it. e.g. Above Resource Expression will give me message like "Fill Information.". What I have in resource file is "Fill {0} Information." which should show end user message like "Fill Address Information.".

• VB.NET 2008 Application crashing during Do Loop

  I am writing an application to compare each item on listbox1 to all items on listbox2. If the item is found, then remove it from both lists. The goal is to only have the items that were not found remain on both lists. The problem is, the application just hangs and I never get any results. I looked at my code several times and I cannot figure out what's going on (programming noob I know...). Can anybody help me with this? • Display username to logged in user only?

  I have a Wordpress blog set up to display comments as "Anonymous User" by hard coding it into the comments.php file. I would like to have it say the user's Username next to their comment and ONLY display that Username to THEM. In other words, if they're a guest, they'll see "Anonymous User" and if they're a registered/logged in DIFFERENT user, they'll still see "Anonymous User", but if it's THEIR comment it'll say "Your Comment" or their own username. • Django: common template subsections

  What's a good way to handle commonly occurring subsections of templates? For example, there is a sub-header section that's used across 4 different pages. The pages are different enough to not work well with template inheritance (ie. "extends" doesn't fit well). Is "include" the recommended method here? It feels a bit heavyweight, requiring each subsection or snippet to be in its own file. Are there any performance issues in using include or is it smart about forming template from the subsections (ie. if I make extensive use of it, do I pay any penalties)? I think what I'm looking for is something like template tags, but without the programming - a simple way to create a library of html template tags I can sprinkle in other templates.

• Why is this consider bad practice? or is it? (ASP.Net)

  Would this code be considered bad practice: <div id="sidebar"> <% =DisplayMeetings(12) %> </div> This is a snippet of code from the default.aspx of a small web app I have worked on. It works perfectly well, runs very fast, but as always, I am aware of the fact that just because it works, doesn't mean it is OK. Basically, the DisplayMeetings subroutine outputs a bunch of formatted HTML (an unordered list actually), with no formatting, just the requisite html, and then my CSS performs all the necessary formatting. The data for generating the list comes from an SQL server database (the parameter controls how many rows to return) and I am using stored procedures and datareader for fast access. This keeps my front-end extraordinary simple and clean, imho, and lets me do all the work in VB or C# in a separate module. I could of course use a databound repeater (and probably 6 or more other methods) of accomplishing the same thing, but are they any better? Other than loosing the design-time features of VS2010?

• Odd Segue Behaviour - Not Firing

  So I've noticed some very weird behaviour from my program. Here's a simplified code snippet and then I'll explain what occurs when built and ran. -(void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; ... if (self.sampleBool) { [self performSegueWithIdentifier:@"mySegue" sender:self]; } else { // do stuff } } ... -(IBAction)myMethod:(UITapGestureRecognizer*)sender { ... [self performSegueWithIdentifier:@"mySegue" sender:self]; } The segue triggers via the UITapGestureRecognizer fine - so I know the segue is linked correctly. However, when self.sampleBool is true and performSegueWithIdentifier is called within viewDidLoad, the segue does not fire. Anyone have any guesses? Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks

• Mysterious c debugging problem when trying to utilize printfs

  Ok, folks. I've never encountered this before and it boggles the mind and is illogical. I have a somewhat complex loop and I want to try and see if everything is working by putting some printf statements. I look the intermediate products using printf and verify that the answer is ok. Then, when I comment out the printf to the intermediate products, the answer is WRONG. Has anyone ever encountered this? This is driving me insane and I don't see how the printfs could change an answer.... X_x If it helps, I am using a c/c++ compiler for a DSP. Thanks for any advice..   I tried to make sure this wasn't a duplicate post, sorry if I was blind. This is a small snippet of code taken from some of the examples that accompany the Stanford Parser. I've been developing in Java for about 4 years, but have never had a very strong understanding of what this style of code is supposed to indicate. List<? extends HasWord> wordList = toke.tokenize(); I'm not worried about the details of the code. What I'm confusing about is what exactly the generic expression is supposed to convey, in English.   As I browse through different questions here, I see that there are a number of questions tagged with html5 and canvas, so I guess they sort of belong together. Now, I have absolutely no idea about the canvas (which is obviously (?) rendered in html5), but it seems that It could be useful one day in the future. So, in order to be prepared when that day comes, I'd like to know the basics about these things. I found a html snippet that is supposed to render such a canvas, but when opened in my browser (firefox) nothing is displayed. So, I guess I need a special plugin or another browser. My question: what are the absolute basic things I need to know and have in order to create a hello world thingy. Please bear in mind that I am completely new with this and don't need no fancy advanced stuff.

  Hi There, What I am trying to achieve is a report on daily financial transactions. With my SQL query I would like to count the total number of cash transactions, the total cash value and the same for checks. I only want to do this for a specified date. Here is a snippet of the query that I am having trouble with. These sum and count commands are processing all the data in the table and not for the selected date. If my understanding of multiple selectors in jQuery is correct, it should be grabbing the outer <span> element AND the inner <div> element. But for some reason, if I use $thisField.prepend("hi"); it ends up putting hi right before the text Question 1, but not before <div>. I thought multiple selectors would grab both elements, and that prepend() adds hi to the beginning of BOTH elements, not just the <div>

  Hi, I’m currently trying to develop a method to get a overview of all my different web templates I’ve created and (legally) downloaded over the years. I thought about a displaying them like Wordpress is previewing it’s templates view a small preview windows, displaying the concrete file with styles and everything. How to divide them into rows and columns and create AJAX modal window open on preview and pagination and so on I believe I can manage, but it is the concept itself about iterate over several folders then find all index.htm / index.html pages and displaying them. I’ve not worked very much with directories in PHP and the only references and code stumps I’ve found so far is just to list all the files in a certain directory like, what it contains. I would be really grateful if someone knew about a script, a function, snippet or just could get me a nudge in the right direction to create such a (probably simple) preview function.   Trying to grasp Prototyping in Javascript. Trying to create my own namespace to extend the String object in JavaScript. Here is what I have so far (a snippet): var ns { alert: function() { alert (this); } } String.prototype.$ns = ns; As you can see, I am trying to place what will be a series of functions into the ns namespace. So I can execute a command like this: "hello world".$ns.alert(); But the problem is, the this doesn't seem to reference the text being sent (in this case, "hello world"). What I get is an alert box with the following: [object Object] Not having a full grasp of the object-oriented nature of JavaScript, I am at a loss, but I am guessing I am missing something simple. I would instead write the following, which is actually shorter in terms of characters. int s = foo(); if(s == ERROR) print_error(); This is not the first time I've seen this idiom though, and I'm guessing there are reasons (perhaps historical) for it being so often used. What are those reasons?
