• Why did ctrl-f stop working in LibreOffice?

  I've basically settled into Unity, but one constant that is kind of giving me agita is that in LibreOffice Calc (and Writer) ctrl-f does nothing. I can go to edit > find ... and the edit menu even suggests ctrl-f as a keyboard shortcut, but actually typing it doesn't do anything. ctrl-alt-f works fine. The only thing that doesn't work is ctrl-f. I had a really hard time getting settled with Unity (mostly trying to get my old Gnome-do and Compiz settings back) so I spent a lot of time monkeying with the Compiz Settings Manager. But I can't figure out where I would have unset/ overrode this. Plus, it isn't like ctrl-f does something unexpected. It just does nothing.

• Are certification courses worth it?

  I'm planning on getting certification in Database Development for SQL Server (MSTC - 70-433). I'm a junior level report writer at a new job and the company is offering to pay the majority, if not all, of training course fees. The course is five days. I noticed that MS has a self-paced training kit (book) that I could use. I'm wondering if this would be a better option because it will allow me to go as quick as possible. I've also heard about video training sessions (Lynda.com) but they seem to go at slow pace. My questions are: What should I expect at a certification course? Is it hands-on training? Small classes with personal feedback or not? Would I be better off learning at my own pace using the training kit? (I'd rather this not turn into a certifications are pointless discussion..)

• What data is available regarding cowboy coding?

  I'm not a programmer; I'm a freelance writer and researcher. I have a client who is looking for stats on certain "threats" to the apps market in general (not any specific app store). One of them is cowboy coding: specifically, he wants to see numbers regarding how many apps have failed to function as intended/crashed/removed because of errors made by, in essence, sloppy coding. Note that I'm not here to debate the merits of cowboy coding, and whether or not it is sloppy. Is there any data about this type of development?

• OpenOffice Calc doesn't show up in the alt-tab window switcher

  I just upgraded to ubuntu 12.04, and it's mostly working. My biggest problem so far: OpenOffice/LibreOffice Calc doesn't show up under the task switcher. When I pres alt-tab to change windows, I can see all my windows except for any OpenOffice documents I have open. If I minimize other windows, then I can get to my Calc documents, but Alt-Tab just doesn't work. It only seems to be a problem with Calc. Writer and Impress both work fine. I do a lot of work in spreadsheets, so this is really messing up my flow. Any thoughts on how to fix it?

• LibreOffice: Open in current program by default?

  I often need to open pipe delimited .txt files in LibreOffice Calc. However, once I have Calc running, if I do File Open and select a spreadsheet with the extension .txt, it opens it in Writer instead. Is there a way to tell the file I'm trying to open using whatever program instead of trying to pick which one to use? Barring that, is there a way I tell it to always use Calc for .txt files (when I open them from the open dialog in Calc)? I still want them to open in GEdit like they currently do if I double click them from Thunar.

I would like to advocate for the first solution, but I need to know what technical advantages and disadvantages each program has. Compatibility with Ubuntu is an evident and important characteristic for LibreOffice, but could you give some other aspects? He's working on the story behind the game while I'm working on the graphics and code. I don't really know where to start with the game. We know what the basic type of game it's going to be and how it would be played, but I'm having a hard time of actually knowing where to begin. I have Xcode open but I don't really even know what I should be designing first. What is some advice for this writer's block? Where is a good place to start with a game? • Anti aliasing problem

  I am auditioning fonts on google web fonts and one that I was discounting was Ubuntu because it looked a bit jagged ( screenshot below taken straight from google); however afterward I read an article where it was mentioned as a good choice, and there was a screenshot where it looked really good ( to me anyway ). I am using windows 7 and have tried looking at it in chrome and firefox. I notice the same thing with some other fonts but this one is a good example because it looks perfect in the screenshot but not so good when I look at it on their site. I know this essentially is a question about setting my computer, but I thought that this would be the best place to pose the question: Is there something wrong with the settings on my machine seeing as it's obviously not showing the font the same on my computer as it did when the article writer downloaded it and used it in an image. I’m actually very excited to know that the code is maintained by the same dedicated core team of MySQL in the past 18 years. Examples are video processing, image processing, and all kinds of signal processing, in general. The goals are to document, and to teach the optimization techniques, so that the code does not become unmaintainable and prone to removal by newer developers. (*) (*) Notwithstanding the possibility that the particular optimization is completely useless in some unforeseeable future CPUs, such that the code will be deleted anyway. Considering that software offerings (commercial or open-source) retain their competitive advantage by having the fastest code and making use of the newest CPU architecture, software writers often need to tweak their code to make it run faster while getting the same output for a certain task, whlist tolerating a small amount of rounding errors. Typically, a software writer can keep many versions of a function as a documentation of each optimization / algorithm rewrite that takes place. How does one make these versions available for others to study their optimization techniques?

  One of the concerns I had in using a Surface RT was the need I have to be able to post.Recently, and not so recently, I have stopped posting. Between getting busy, carrying different devices. Well, it has been hard to do. Tried doing that with an iPad, and I can't say it didn't work, it just didn't work for me. Again, back to the concern with the Surface RT. But, looking at the App Store I started getting that same frustration I had with other platforms that left me with a feeling of "I have to compromise because I am on a SubText platform". So, I stuck to posting from Windows Live Writer (great tool!). This whole situation made me think and rethink my strategy, and then … a big DUH! What about using Microsoft Word 2013 for that? Would it work? So, here is the test!

This article, i think, is biased towards western games: “The other day,” says Q Entertainment’s Mielke, “I was having lunch with a friend and I said, ‘Have you ever played StarCraft?’ And he said, ‘What’s StarCraft?’ Sometimes it’s just really shocking that their gaming vocabulary isn’t as extensive as it could be.   I made the move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu not dual booting because I have decided to quit gaming to spare more time for my studies. I just needed an OS for browsing the web and word processing etc. After I installed Ubuntu I installed the AMD GPU drivers, after which I clicked on the little printer icon, selected add printer and it found the drivers for the Lexmark 7000 series and I installed them. Now my problem is when I print something from Writer it processes it thinks its completed it, when in fact it hasn't printed anything. I tried printing a test page but it was stuck on processing for 5 minutes. I have restarted my computer and turned the printer on and off. I'm running 64bit if that changes anything.

• Introduction to JBatch

  It seems batch processing is moving more and more into the realm of the Java developer. In recognition of this fact, JBatch (aka Java Batch, JSR 352, Batch Applications for the Java Platform) was added to Java EE 7. In a recent article JBatch specification lead Chris Vignola of IBM provides a high level overview of the API. He discusses the core concepts/motivation, the Job Specification Language, the reader-processor-writer pattern, job operator, job repository, chunking, packaging, partitions, split/flow and the like.
