• Suggestions for a Self-serv advertising service

  I am seeking a self-serv advertising service for my websites, but I have a few restrictions that seem to make what i'm looking for hard to find. Specifically, I want to place "advertise here" links on my pages and allow end-users to purchase advertising on that site, page, and location. These ads will not be part of a national network. Supports multi-tenancy - That is, I have a number of domains using the same "web application" but with customized content per domain. When a customer wants to advertise on a given domain, then the ads will only appear on that domain and on that page of the domain (even though the page name may be the same across multiple domains). Supports fixed ad prices, not just CPC. I need monthly and quarterly pricing regardless of performance. Integrates with OpenX and other ad networks, so that if there is no self-serv on a given zone, it will use national advertising or direct advertising. Shiny Ads has much of this, but i'm looking for alternatives, as their prices are a bit crazy (20%) and can only do PayPal.

Is there a best practice for integrating advert support into mobile applications, so as to not drain user battery too much? ...When you fire up Angry Birds on your Android phone, the researchers found that the core gaming component only consumes about 18 percent of total app energy. The biggest battery suck comes from the software powering third-party ads and analytics accounting for 45 percent of total app energy, according to the study... Has anyone invoked better ways of keeping away from the "3G Tail", as the report puts it? Is it better/possible to download a large set of adverts that are cached for a few hours, and using them to populate your ad space, to avoid constant use of the Wi-Fi/3G radios? Are there any best practices for the inclusion of adverts in mobile apps?

  Hey... its XMAS Eve and something is bugging me... yes, I have work on my mind even when I am on holiday. The vast amount of frameworks available for PHP now use MVC. Even ASP.net has its own MVC module. I can see the attraction of MVC, I really can and I use it frequently. The only downside that I can see is that you have to fire up the whole system to execute a page request. Depending on your task this can be a little wasteful. So the question. In a professional environment is this the only way to use PHP nowadays or are their other design methods which have alternative benefits?

• Best Terminology for a particular php-based site architecture? [closed]

  For a site... o whose overall look-and-feel is generated by one php page ("index.php"). o in which "index.php" provides for all pages served the following required components: The DOCTYPE, opening html tag, the head section, the opening body tag, the end-body tag, and end-html tag. o which uses computed hierarchical navigation menus within "index.php" to offer visitors access to the site content. o in which all content is stored in individual files that contain "headerless html". (The DOCTYPE, etc. etc. being being provided by "index.php" as described above.) Q1: what term best describes this architecture? I'm seeking a concise descriptor that is useful in conversation and definitive as a search term, in whole-web searches, and searching here on Pro Webmasters. Q2: what term best describes the individual content files? Same general goals for the descriptor as above. As you see above, I couldn't avoid using the term "headerless html", my best choice. But this term does not seem to be in general use. I've found some people use this term to describe such as my content files, but others use it quite differently.

  I had a friend in college who programmed something that worked the first time, that was pretty amazing. But as for me, I just fire up the debugger as soon as I finally get whatever I'm working on to compile - saves me time (kidding of course, I sometimes hold out a little bit of hope or use a lot of premeditated debug strings). What's the best way to approach the Dijkstrain ideal for our programs? -or- Is this just some sort of pie-in-the-sky old fools quest for greatness applicable only to finite tasks that no one should hope for in our professional lives because programming is just too complex?

• Samsung 7 Graphics Nightmare

  I just bought a Samsung 7 laptop with the Amd Radeon hd 6490m an I installed the driver. Everything was working smooth and it was rendering nice until I rebooted it. I noticed that it wouldn't boot my favorite game because of a GLSBadRenderRequest. So I went over to the AMD Catalyst program, and it wouldn't fire up because it couldn't find the graphics card!! What do you think is going on? Oh, and that was the latest driver straight from AMD. Im running 12.04lts.

• Is it better to specialize in a single field I like, or expand into other fields to broaden my horizons?

  This is a dilemma about which I have been thinking for quite a while. I'm a graduate student and my topics of interest are programming language design, code analysis, compilation, etc. So far, this field has been very interesting and rewarding for me, so I was thinking about finding a job in that field and continuing to specialize in it. I feel like it's a relatively solid field which won't "get out of style" anytime soon. I've always thought that in such complex fields it's better to be a real expert than just another guy who superficially understand what the experts are talking about. On the other hand, I feel that by specializing this way I really limit my future option. I have always been a strong believer in multidisciplinary approaches to problems. Maybe I should go search for a general programming job in which I could gain experience in other fields, as well as occasionally apply my favorite field for solving problems. Specializing in only one or two fields can prevent me from thinking outside the box and cause stagnation. I would really like to hear more opinions about this choice. The truth is I'm already leaning towards one of the choices, so basic psychology says nothing will change my mind, but I would still love to hear some feedback.

  I need to send hundreds of pictures via email. The size is reaching 100s of MBs .. which is certainly burden on network. WinRar, 7-Zip aren't helping .. Would you like to suggest any software which can carry out compression so that I can reduce the size and send it via email, and decompress it at the other end .. opensource or freeware are more preferred .. paid-versions are appreciated too Edit: I am seeking an alternative software for winrar and 7-zip which is more efficient in compressing .. but still not losing any data ..

• Am I an idealist?

  This is not only a question, this is also a call for help. Since I started my career as a programmer, I always tried to learn from my mistakes. I worked hard to learn best-practices and while I don't consider myself a C++ expert, I still believe I'm not a beginner either. I was recently hired into a company for C++ development. There I was told that my way to work was "against the rules" and that I would have to change my mind. Here are the topics I disagree with my hierarchy (their words): "You should not use separate header files for your different classes. One big header file is both easier to read and faster to compile." "Trying to use different headers is counter-productive : use the same super-set of headers everywhere, and enforce the use #pragma hdrstop to hasten compilation" "You may not use Boost or any other library that uses nested directories to organize its files. Our build-machine doesn't work with nested directories. Moreover, you don't need Boost to create great software." One might think I'm somehow exaggerated things, but the sad truth is that I didn't. That's their actual words. I believe that having separate files enhance maintainability and code-correctness and can fasten compilation time by the use of the proper includes. Have you been in a similar situation? What should I do? I feel like it's actually impossible for me to work that way and day after day, my frustration grows.

• Having to Toggle Between Two Sets of Video Drivers

  So, I've got a Win7 64-bit gaming PC with GTX 260's. Recently, StarCraft 2 had an issue with flickering, which NVidia fixed with a new set of drivers. However, these new drivers induce unplayable graphical errors with Neverwinter Nights 2, something me and my friends still play from time to time. I am seeking advice on the "best" way to rectify this situation, to be able to switch between two driver releases, without compromising the stability of my system (if Windows stability isn't an oxymoron). I'm wondering if Windows 7 is structured in such a way that I can constantly reinstall these two sets of drivers back and forth overtop each other, possibly six or eight times a day, without very quickly driving myself to reformat to maintain that "just like new" performance. I'm loathe to have to reformat the drive and maintain two copies of the operating system, but I'll do it if I have to.

  This is the  Ineta Live player without the O’Data Feed.  It is a good example of taking the plain Media Player provided with the Encoder install and re-templating it to make it your own.  It also has a custom scrub control that is added in.  I generally put my tempates in a separate resource file.  On this project, I discovered that I had to include the template at the document level because I needed the ability to attach some code behind to fire change state behaviors.  I could not use the blend xaml behaviors for change state inside the template because the template can’ determine the TargetObject.   Version 1.01 – 6/10/09 (wow how did a week slip by)

• How to connect a remote IP Phone to our VOIP Network?

  We have an IP phone system in our office, and about 8 VoIP phones running on the system. We have a remote worker, who is literally states away. We'd like to connect his phone to our VoIP network, so that he has a business phone and an extension to which we could transfer calls. I was thinking, although I don't know for sure, that a pair of Cisco routers could be used in some way to make this work. I imagine a VPN solution, where I have one router connected to the phone network and the other router connected to the remote phone. Then have a site-to-site VPN set up so that the remote router... And that's where I'm stuck. I know the remote router will need to use the DHCP server of the phone system. I've never set up something like this, so I am seeking the help of the community here. What is the best way to get this remote VoIP phone RELIABLY connected to our internal VoIP network?

• How to decide if I should take a profit sharing offer or insist on hard cash

  I am currently the sole developer at the very beginning stages of what I think could be a successful startup. My question is simply how to go about determining if I am interested in accepting a permanent stock in the enterprise or if I should insist on hard cash. This startup is seeking venture capital and it is looking likely that they will get something, I don't know how much. I know very little about the business plan or financial operations at all. The founders have experience with other startup type devours that have been successful. From a business perspective I have a reasonable amount of confidence in them. However, I have never met them face to face. They have offered me a partnership in the project but I'm fairly confident that I don't want to do that. I have done some work for them and they really like me so I'm not to afraid of loosing the position all together. I am a young developer with no experience with this sort of thing and need some experience to point me in the right direction. How to I begin to evaluate how much stock or what percentage of the profit should I ask for? Any suggestions at all would be appreciated! P.S. Any suggestions for better tags?

• What's the simplest way to get .flac music files into iTunes?

  I'm looking for a simple way to import .flac files into iTunes, so I can play them on my mac, and when I'm out, my iPhone, and I'm willing to be I'm not the first person to want to do this. What are the best tools for doing this? The quality of the music is useful, but truth be told, the speakers I'd play them on are so crappy that a lot of the sound quality in the .flac format would be lost anyway, so I'm not averse to converting to mp3 files. If it helps give any context, I'm using a Macbook with OS 10.5 Leopard, and iTunes 9, connected to a 16gb iPhone with standard apple headphones, which is sometimes plugged into Bose SoundDock for music, and the music files are piano performances.   the data card is never detected automatically...its detected only when i fire a lsusb. Later i give modeswitch commands etc etc...then the device works fine..i can easily use internet...but once i disconnect from the net, its impossible to reestablish the connection...to reconnect i have to type all the commands, starting with lsusb, in the terminal again..ie every time i want a connection i have to sit and type 5-6 commands in the terminal before i can get through. what can be done to get automatic net connection as soon as i plug in the data card...please help...

• Microsoft Changes Developer Account Registration Requirements

  Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that Microsoft seems to have changed the requirements for Corporate accounts.  These requirements were not in effect when I originally setup the account for the company that I work for.  We also recently had our corporate account canceled without explanation and are in the process of working to get it reinstated.  This all seems to revolve around rules to increase confidence that in the producers of content.  They are now having Symantec validate a company based on legal documents. In the past there have been problems with getting credit cards accepted.  We have had to setup new Live IDs to satisfy whatever glitch the system had or unexplainable requirement.  I am hoping that in the time that has elapsed these problems have been resolved.   The .NET Demon team have just implemented an experiment that is quite a break from Red Gate's normal business model. Instead of the tool expiring after the trial period, it now continues to work, but with a new message that appears after the tool has saved you a certain amount of time. The rationale is that a user that stops using .NET Demon because the trial expired isn't doing anyone any good. We'd much rather people continue using it forever, as long as everyone that finds it useful and can afford it still pays for it. Hopefully the message appearing is annoying enough to achieve that, but not for people to uninstall it. It's true that many companies have tried it before with mixed results, but we have a secret weapon. The perfect nag message? The neat thing for .NET Demon is that we can easily measure exactly how much time .NET Demon has saved you, in terms of unnecessary project builds that Visual Studio would have done. When you press F5, the message shows you the time saved, and then makes you wait a shorter time before starting your application. Confronted with the truth about how amazing .NET Demon is, who can do anything but buy it? The real secret though, is that while you wait, .NET Demon gives you entertainment, in the form of a picture of a cute kitten. I've only had time to embed one kitten so far, but the eventual aim is for a random different kitten to appear each time. The psychological health benefits of a dose of kittens in the daily life of the developer are obvious. My only concern is that people will complain after paying for .NET Demon that the kittens are gone.

• Numbering equations based on chapter numbers in MS-Word

  I am seeking for a way to number each equation based on the chapter numbers. The number should be placed at the right side of the equation and the equation should be center-aligned. Something like this: (The bounding box around 2.3 is not necessary). I found this article that do this in a tricky way. Sadly it has some problems when I use multilevel numbering for Headings. To conclude, I am looking for a way to numbers equations that: The numbering is formatted as N-M that N is chapter number and M is equation number. equation is placed in center-aligned number is placed in the right side of equation There should be a way to cross-reference each numbered equation.
