• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 3: Key Concerns

  This is part 3 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. Keys Concerns Of Smartphones In The Enterprise These are the factors that you need to be aware of and address in order to build successful enterprise smartphone applications.  Most of them have nothing to do with the application itself as you will see here. Managing Devices Managing devices is a factor that is going to effect how much your company will have to spend outside of developing the applications.  How will you track the devices within the corporation?  How often will you have to replace phones and as a consequence have to upgrade your applications to support new phones?  The devices can represent a significant investment of capital.  If these questions are not addressed you will find a number of hidden costs throughout the life of your solution. Purchase or BYOD We have seen the trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) lately within the enterprise.  How many meetings have you been in where someone is on their personal iPad, iPhone, Android phone or Windows Phone?  The issue is if you can afford to support everyone's choice in device? That is a lot to take on even if you only support the current release of each platform. Do you go with the most popular device or do you pick a platform that best matches your current ecosystem and distribute company owned devices?  There is no easy answer here, but you should be able give some dollar value to both hardware and development costs related to platform coverage. Asset Tracking/Insurance Smartphones are devices that are easier to lose or have stolen than laptops and desktops. Not only do you have your normal asset management concerns but also assignment of financial responsibility. You also will need to insure them against damage and theft and add legal documents that spell out the responsibilities of the employees that use these devices. Personal vs. Corporate Data What happens when you terminate an employee?  How do you recover the device?  What happens when they have put personal data on the device?  These are all situation that can cause possible loss of corporate intellectual property or legal repercussions of reclaiming a device with personal data on it.  Policies need to be put in place that protect the company from being exposed to type of loss.  This can mean significant legal and procedural cost that you need to consider. • Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.1

  Last week, we released the latest update of Oracle Secure Global Desktop. Release 5.1 introduces a number of bug fixes and smaller changes but the most interesting one is definitely increased support for html5-based client access. In SGD 5.0 we added support for Apple iPads using Safari to connect to SGD and display your session right inside the browser. The traditional model for SGD is that you connect using a webbrowser to the webtop and applications that are displayed locally using a local client (tta). This client gets installed the first time you connect. So in the traditional model (which works very well...) you need a webbrowser, java and the tta client. With the addition of html5 support, there's no longer a need to install a local client, in fact, there is also no longer a need to have java installed. We currently support Chrome as a browser to enable html5 clients. This allows us to enable html5 on the android devices and also on desktops running Chrome (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). Connections will work transparently across proxy servers as well. So now you can run any SGD published app or desktop right from your webbrowser inside a browser window. This is very convenient and cool.

There are a few ways to manage through this additional requirements: Tweak and point the color picker in the article textearea. Import the code to a word processor and then copy the code. However, the word processor would unnecessarily swell the contents with too much of formatting contents.   I recently worked on a project to create a custom content folio renderer in WebCenter Content. It needed to output the native files in the folio along with a manifest file in HTML format which would list the contents of the folio along with any designated metadata and a relative link to the file within the download.  This way a person could hand someone the folio download and it would be a self-contained package with all of the content and a single file to display the information on the contents.  The default Zip rendition of the folio will output the web-viewable version of the file with an HDA formatted file for each one. • Running external commands improved a bit

  Hi all, today we would like to show you one small improvement related to running external commands (e.g. generating documentation, running framework commands etc.) which will be available in NetBeans 7.3. First, have a look at the screenshot: As you can see, the first line represents the command that is being executed. In case of any error, this command can be easily copy & pasted to the console for deeper investigation (and proper bug reports ;). Also please notice that the Output window now supports background colors. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans Bugzilla (component php, subcomponent Code).

• Day in the Life of Agile - The Forge Michigan November 27, 2012

  Went to training at The Forge yesterday and did a Day in the life of Agile with Pillar.  It was pretty good. Check them out at: http://pillartechnology.com/ Abstract: A single-day agile project simulation that is engaging, educational, provocative, and fun. This simulation introduces concepts like time-boxed iterations, User Stories, collective estimation, commitment to a product owner for iteration scope, formal verification ritual at iteration conclusion, tracking velocity, and making results big and visible through charts. The exercise is designed to simulate not only how agile teams and practices work, but the inevitable challenges that arise as teams attempt to adopt such practices. One of the best parts of this training was getting some hands on experience with agile.  We used a program called Scratch to create an arcade video game.  Our team chose Frogger.  We had 3 iterations at 20 minutes each.  I think we did pretty good but in the panic of trying to get a bunch done in only 20 minutes made it interesting. And unless you are fluent in HDA or have a tool to read them, they are difficult to consume. I thought this might be useful for others, so I'm posting a copy of the component here. Beyond the standard instructions for installing a component, there is an environment configuration file (folionativezipwithmanifestrenderer_environment.cfg) which has a couple of options. FolioMetadataManifestList - This is a comma separated list of metadata fields (system or custom) that should be included in the manifest file. FolioMetadataManifestUseOriginalFilename - (True or False) If set to True, the filenames in the zip file will be based on the original filename as it was checked into WebCenter Content.  If False, it will use the 'Name' of the item as defined within the Folio.  This is usually the Title of the item. The component also includes the source code, so feel free to use this as a reference for creating other interesting folios.

• Two Hidden NetBeans Keyboard Shortcuts for Opening & Toggling between Views

  The following are two really basic shortcuts for working with NetBeans editor windows that will be added to the Keyboard Shortcuts card for NetBeans IDE 7.2: Ctrl-Alt-PgUp/PgDown: Shortcuts for switching between editor types (e.g. Source, Design, History buttons). Switching between the editor types is a frequent operation sometimes, e.g., when using GUI builder, and while it can be done easily via mouse, or from View | Editors menu, it is very handy to know the shortcuts as well. Ctrl-PgUp/PgDown: Similarly, these are shortcuts for switching to next/previous opened document (tab). Note this is not like Ctrl-Tab that cycles in the last used order, but going through the tabs as they appear in the editor. Both shortcuts should fit into the "Opening and Toggling between Views" section. These are important to mention on the card because they are not visible anywhere else in the UI (as there are no menu items like "Go to next/previous editor type" or "Go to next/previous document"). • JSR 308 Moves Forward

  I am pleased to announce a number of recent milestones for JSR 308, Annotations on Java Types: Adoption of JCP 2.8 Thanks to the agreement of the Expert Group, JSR 308 operates under JCP 2.8 from September 2012. There is a publicly archived mailing list for EG members, and a companion list for anyone who wishes to follow EG traffic by email. There is also a "suggestion box" mailing list where anyone can send feedback to the E.G. directly. Feedback will be discussed on the main EG list. Co-spec lead Prof. Michael Ernst maintains an issue tracker and a document archive. Early-Access Builds of the Reference Implementation Oracle has published binaries for all platforms of JDK 8 with support for type annotations. Builds are generated from OpenJDK's type-annotations/type-annotations forest (notably the langtools repo). The forest is owned by the Type Annotations project. Integration with Enhanced Metadata On the enhanced metadata mailing list, Oracle has proposed support for repeating annotations in the Java language in Java SE 8. For completeness, it must be possible to repeat annotations on types, not only on declarations. The implementation of repeating annotations on declarations is already in the type-annotations/type-annotations forest (and hence in the early-access builds above) and work is underway to extend it to types.

• Developing a TCK: Spec Lead Call for Spec Leads 20 December

  The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible.
