• How to remove HDD Low virus

  “HDD Low virus” is a new  fake system optimizer application which started affecting all  the Windows ( XP, vista, Windows 7) based computers world wide starting from Monday. It gets installed to the computers without notice by passing all our antivirus software. The infected computers will suddenly popup a system error  similar to the below screen shot and tries to shut down the computer.   Though the major anti virus companies have not yet release an update for this virus, We can easily remove this virus using the below steps Steps to remove HDD Low virus Press Alt+Ctrl+Delete and go the the Task Manager -> Process and kill the process with name [random number].exe ( e.g 123410.exe) Go to Run -> type msconfig to launch the System Configuration utility. In the Start up Tab un check  all the services with random name (e.g jygkgs.exe) and note folder path of the service in the Command column. Go to that folder path and delete all the exe files with random name manually ( It is recommended to use command prompt to delete the files) Delete all the HDD low files in the below path %Desktop%\HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\Uninstall HDD Low.lnk %Programs%\HDD Low\HDD Low.lnk Open registry using Run-> regedit.exe search for the below key and delete software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [random number].exe” Restart the computer Also update your anti virus definition and run a full scan of your computer to remove any affected files. • Are today's general purpose languages at the right level of abstraction ?

  Today Uncle Bob Martin, a genuine hero, showed this video In this video Bob Martin claims that our programming languages are at the right level for our problems at this time. One of the reasons I get from this video as that Bob Martin sees us as detail managers and our problems are at the detail level. This is the first time I have to disagree with Bob Martin and was wondering what the people at programmers think about this. First there is a difference between MDA and MDE MDA in itself hasn't worked and I blame way to much formalisation at a level you can't formalize these kind of problems. MDE and MDD are still trying to prove themselves and in my mind show great promise. e.g. look at MetaEdit The detail still needs to be management in my mind, but you do so in one place (framework or generators) instead of at multiple places. Right for our kind of problems ? I think depends on what problems you look at. Do the current programming languages keep up with the current demands on time to market ? Are they good at bridging the business IT communication gap ? So what do you think ?

• New version of SQL Server Data Tools is now available

  If you don’t follow the SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) blog then you may not know that two days ago an updated version of SSDT was released (and by SSDT I mean the database projects, not the SSIS/SSRS/SSAS stuff) along with a new version of the SSDT Power Tools. This release incorporates a an updated version of the SQL Server Data Tier Application Framework (aka DAC Framework, aka DacFX) which you can read about on Adam Mahood’s blog post SQL Server Data-Tier Application Framework (September 2012) Available. DacFX is essentially all the gubbins that you need to extract and publish .dacpacs and according to Adam’s post it incorporates a new feature that I think is very interesting indeed: Extract DACPAC with data – Creates a database snapshot file (.dacpac) from a live SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database that contains data from user tables in addition to the database schema. These packages can be published to a new or existing SQL Server or Windows Azure SQL Database using the SqlPackage.exe Publish action. Data contained in package replaces the existing data in the target database. In short, .dacpacs can now include data as well as schema. I’m very excited about this because one of my long-standing complaints about SSDT (and its many forebears) is that whilst it has great support for declarative development of schema it does not provide anything similar for data – if you want to deploy data from your SSDT projects then you have to write Post-Deployment MERGE scripts. This new feature for .dacpacs does not change that situation yet however it is a very important pre-requisite so I am hoping that a feature to provide declaration of data (in addition to declaration of schema which we have today) is going to light up in SSDT in the not too distant future. • Unity Plugin DLLNotFoundException

  I am using a plugin DLL that I created in Visual C++ Express 2010 on windows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition. The DLL functions properly on the machine that it was originally created on. The problem is that the DLL is not functioning in the Unity3d Editor on another machine and giving an error that basically states that the DLL is missing some of its dependencies. The target machine is running Windows 7 Home 64 bit (if this is relevant) Results from the error log of Dependency Walker: Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "c:\users\dewayne\desktop\shared\vrpnplugin\unityplugin\build\release\OPTITRACKPLUGIN.DLL" contains errors. The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail (14001). • Platform Builder: Removing the Version Information from the Desktop

  The question of how to remove the version information from the desktop has been around for a long time. It came up again today. The question is about the string displayed on the desktop that looks like one of these, depending on the OS verison: Windows Embedded CE v6.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE v5.00 (Build xxxx on xxxx) Microsoft Windows CE .NET v4.20 (Build xxxx on xxxx) I have looked into this in the past, but never really had a definitive answer. I have an answer now. The short answer is that the version information is displayed if the code is built without SHIP_BUILD defined.  I have to be honest, I have given this answer in the newsgroups in the past, but I still had questions. My questions have come from different build machines giving different results.   I have noticed that some engineer’s workstations would have the version information displayed, while others did not. I always stopped short of spending time investigating further because our release build machines never resulted in the version information being displayed. But, we do not typically define SHIP_BUILD for our releases because our customers want or need the debug output. So today I dug further into the question. The answer is actually quite simple. Microsoft builds the retail shell libraries with SHIP_BUILD defined and releases the libraries with Platform Builder. Normally the source code does not need to be built during Sysgen, so the libraries that Microsoft delivered are linked to create the Explorer shell. So typically the Explorer shell displays the version information for debug builds, but does not for retail builds. The trouble comes when the source code is forced to be rebuilt for a retail build. This might happen if an engineer uses “Build and Sysgen” or builds the Public\Shell folder from the command line with the clean flag. I am not sure if Build and Sysgen will cause the problem or not – I have never used Build and Sysgen and I strongly advise against using it (see Platform Builder: Don’t use Build and Sysgen) Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

  Moodle is a free elearning content management software program. It does take a great deal of time to set it up because you need to upload your Office files to Moodle. Now, Microsoft has made that job easier with their new Office Add on. With it you can save directly into Moodle.   Here are the instructions on how to use. Just change the URL you use for your Moodle site. 1. Go to this site and download and install the software. http://www.educationlabs.com/projects/officeaddinformoodle/Pages/default.aspx 2. Open your Office Word in this example and then select Save to Moodle (Notice you can also open files that you have stored in moodle make changes and then save back to moodle. (WOW) 3,  Now because this is the first time you are using this feature you will see a dialog box that looks like this: Enter the moodle website exactly as you see here along with your username and password for moodle. Click the checkbox to remember you. 4. After you click on Save to Moodle you should see a dialog box like this: 5.  Click the plus on the left Lake Highland Preparatory School-Online Learning 6. • Google CDN or Akamai

  We combine and minify our JS with Minify - the combined JS is then cached on Akamai. I'm suggesting to my supervisor that we put JQuery and JQueryUI on Google CDN and take it out of our combined JS. The benefits I see are parallel downloads, significantly smaller Akamai cache hit, and the high potential the user will have JQuery from Google CDN cached in his/her browser when he/she visits our site so no download will be required at all. I also pointed out how pointing to the major version CDN URL //ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js will eliminate the need for us to micro-manage our JQuery version control, and that if a new release introduces a bug, we simply point the CDN URL to a stable minor version of our choice until the issue is resolved. My supervisor disagrees and thinks keeping it on Akamai is the way to go. Any insight as to which is going to be faster here? I looked for some benchmarks and references online but they are either out-dated or merely talk about Google wanting to acquire Akamai. EDIT: Some further research has pointed me to an article mentioning how 'latest version' CDN URL's use short expires headers so it might be more optimal to use /jquery/1.7/. I'm fine with this - the general question still remains.

  I buy a domain from GoDaddy. Let's call this domain as abc.com. I've a hosting account on web hosting A with abc.com as my primary domain. I created a sub-domain pic.abc.com and I wish it to be pointed to my new hosting account. This web hosting B also use abc.com as the primary domain. The main purpose of doing this because I only want to use web hosting B to host my pic.abc.com contents. That's all. Other content from *.abc.com and abc.com will be remain in web hosting A. How to do this? Note 1: I try to add pic.abc.com as an add-on domain in my web hosting B account. Unfortunately, I couldn't do that. Note 2: I also try to use URL forwarding method using DNS management service like DNS Social. It doesn't work. Note 3: I'm using WordPress on the pic.abc.com site.   SSAS Compare has a brand new website! The old page was thrown together in the way that most Red Gate labs sites tend to be — as experimental sites for experimental products. We’ve been developing SSAS Compare for a while now, so we decided it was time for something a bit prettier. The new site is mostly the work of Andrew, our marketing manager, who has all sorts of opinions about websites. One of the opinions Andrew has is that his photo should be on every site on the internet, or at least every Red Gate site on the internet, and that’s why his handsome visage now appears on the SSAS Compare page. Well, that isn’t quite true. According to Andrew, people download more software when they have photos of human beings to look at. We want as many people to try SSAS Compare as possible, so we got the team together for an intimate photoshoot directed by Red Gate’s resident recorder of light, Dom Reed (aka Mr Flibble). The photo will appear on the site as soon as Dom is finished photoshopping us into something more palatable, which is a big job. Until then, you’ll have to put up with Andrew. • Disaster Recovery Plan&ndash;Rebuild System Disk (Dell Server 2900 with PERC RAID controller)

  Goal: Since the system disk is a RAID 1 mirrored set, we can rebuild the shadow set by replacing one of the good sets with a blank disk Steps Shutdown and power down server Remove the disk from bay 9, which is part of the system shadow set. Put this disk on the shelf Insert blank/old disk into the empty bay     Label the new disk before inserting it into the empty bay       Power up server During the booting process, the following message appears: “Some configured disks have been removed from your system…”       Press ‘C’ to Load Configuration utility             Press 'Y' to confirm to load the foreign configuration       In this example, the system shadow set is Disk Group 2.  (Before proceeding, confirm this is the disk group in your case).  Expanding the physical disks shows a disk in bay 8 and a missing disk in bay 9.  This is correct.   Now, we have to include the new inserted disk in this group       RAID controller reporting bay 9 is empty       There may be times when the new disk is seen as a foreign disk.  In this case, do the following:     Foreign disk is reported in bay 9 CTRL-N (Next Page) to Foreign Mgt All the disk groups will be displayed.  Typically, the disk group containing the foreign disk will be grey.  To remove the foreign disk Highlight Controller Press F2 Select Foreign Select Clear (do NOT import the configuration!)       Clear the foreign configuration Now the disk can be brought into the system shadow set disk group as a hot spare   To include the newly inserted disk into the system shadowset disk group, it must be brought in as a hot spare Highlight Disk Group 2 (VD Management) Hit F2 Select 'Manage Ded. HS'     Manage dedicated hot swap Select the disk in bay 9 (Hit space bar to select) Tab to 'OK'.  Hit the return key     Select hot spare to bring into RAID 1 mirror set   Rebuild automatically commences     Rebuild in process   Restart now or restart after rebuild is completed

If you previously uploaded a profile picture, we’ve used that to generate a starter thumbnail.   This fresh video from NASA provides the clearest view of the Earth at night ever seen, thanks to the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite. Check out the video and accompanying pics to see the stunning views. In daylight our big blue marble is all land, oceans and clouds. But the night – is electric. This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface. This video uses the Earth at night view created by NASA’s Earth Observatory with data processed by NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center and combined with a version of the Earth Observatory’s Blue Marble: Next Generation. • New P6 Reporting Database R2

  Along with our announced GA release of P6 Analytics R1 recently, you may have noticed that when you purchase P6 Analytics, we provide a restricted use license for P6 Reporting Database R2. This represent an updated version of the previous P6 Reporting Database 6.2 and can be purchased individually on a per-CPU basis. Typically, you will want just the reporting database if you would like the P6 data warehouse components such as the ETL, data models, ODS and star schemas in order to report on that data with another reporting tool other than Oracle. The P6 Analytics solution will only work on Oracle BI (OBI). But I pasted below some examples of a simplistic matrix report that I built from the P6 Reporting Database using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. This is the Report Builder tool which is very similar to other similar tools to build reports on the market today such as Crystal Reports or Oracle BI Publisher. This is an example of what you can do (in a very simple format) by using the P6 Reporting Database without P6 Analytics: Here is a quick run-down of some of the key new features in P6 Reporting Database R2 that were added as enhancements to the 6.2 version: • 4 new star schemas (improved projects star, project history, resource utilization and resource allocation) • Improved ETL performance and reliability • P6 security is inherited at the star schema level • Custom P6 project, activity & resource codes are now available as customizable dimensions in the star schemas • Time-phase data down to the data is now available from the star schemas • An updated Operational Data Store (ODS) for operational reporting that includes the WBS hierarchy • The ODS now includes daily spreads for activity and resource assignments

• How can one compile Darwinia under Linux?

  Introversion is now offering the Darwinia+Multiwinia source for sale, stating Note: You will need Windows and Visual Studio 2008 to build the games. We have tested that the code compiles correctly on the PC, but you will need to put some effort in to compile for Mac / Linux. There is no Xbox code in this release. Has anyone put this effort in already? The best answer would (be yes and) mention modifications that had to be done (also mentioning the distribution used), the second-to-best would explain why it doesn't work right now. Since I haven't bought the source pack I'm relying on up-votes as confirmation, so please comment on answers if something doesn't work or has to be modified e.g. for another Linux distribution. I'm currently using Ubuntu 8.04, but 10.04 or e.g. Gentoo would be a choice, too. EDIT: Clarification: The intention is to make a new game with that engine, but since this question is a prerequisite, it seems suitable here. UPDATE It is a bit off topic, but for those interested, Introversion added the source code of Uplink, Darwinia, Multiwinia and DEFCON to The Humble Introversion Bundle, so don't miss it!

• Ubuntu 10.04 - unable to install Arduino

  Hello! At the moment, I try to install Arduino on my Ubuntu 10.04 (32 Bit) computer. I downloaded the latest release at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software, cd'ed to the directory and unziped the package. When I try to run ./arduino , I get following error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError at processing.app.Base.main(Base.java:112) Caused by: java.awt.HeadlessException at sun.awt.HeadlessToolkit.getMenuShortcutKeyMask(HeadlessToolkit.java:231) at processing.core.PApplet.<clinit>(Unknown Source) ... 1 more Here is my java -version output: java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.5) (6b20-1.9.5-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) OpenJDK Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) Any suggestions on this? I try to install arduino without the 'arduino' package. I tried to install it with apt-get (sudo apt-get install arduino).
