  • How to properly mix generics and inheritance to get the desired result?

    - by yamsha
    My question is not easy to explain using words, fortunately it's not too difficult to demonstrate. So, bear with me: public interface Command<R> { public R execute();//parameter R is the type of object that will be returned as the result of the execution of this command } public abstract class BasicCommand<R> { } public interface CommandProcessor<C extends Command<?>> { public <R> R process(C<R> command);//this is my question... it's illegal to do, but you understand the idea behind it, right? } //constrain BasicCommandProcessor to commands that subclass BasicCommand public class BasicCommandProcessor implements CommandProcessor<C extends BasicCommand<?>> { //here, only subclasses of BasicCommand should be allowed as arguments but these //BasicCommand object should be parameterized by R, like so: BasicCommand<R> //so the method signature should really be // public <R> R process(BasicCommand<R> command) //which would break the inheritance if the interface's method signature was instead: // public <R> R process(Command<R> command); //I really hope this fully illustrates my conundrum public <R> R process(C<R> command) { return command.execute(); } } public class CommandContext { public static void main(String... args) { BasicCommandProcessor bcp = new BasicCommandProcessor(); String textResult = bcp.execute(new BasicCommand<String>() { public String execute() { return "result"; } }); Long numericResult = bcp.execute(new BasicCommand<Long>() { public Long execute() { return 123L; } }); } } Basically, I want the generic "process" method to dictate the type of generic parameter of the Command object. The goal is to be able to restrict different implementations of CommandProcessor to certain classes that implement Command interface and at the same time to able to call the process method of any class that implements the CommandProcessor interface and have it return the object of type specified by the parametarized Command object. I'm not sure if my explanation is clear enough, so please let me know if further explanation is needed. I guess, the question is "Would this be possible to do, at all?" If the answer is "No" what would be the best work-around (I thought of a couple on my own, but I'd like some fresh ideas)

  • Rails Active Record find(:all, :order => ) issue.

    - by CodingWithoutComments
    I seem to be unable to use :order_by for more than one column at a time. For example, I have a "Show" model with date and attending columns. If I run the following code: @shows = Show.find(:all, :order => "date") I get the following results: [#<Show id: 7, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 2>, #<Show id: 1, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 78>, #<Show id: 2, date: "2009-04-19", attending: 91>, #<Show id: 3, date: "2009-04-20", attending: 16>, #<Show id: 4, date: "2009-04-21", attending: 136>] If I run the following code: @shows = Show.find(:all, :order => "attending DESC") [#<Show id: 4, date: "2009-04-21", attending: 136>, #<Show id: 2, date: "2009-04-19", attending: 91>, #<Show id: 1, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 78>, #<Show id: 3, date: "2009-04-20", attending: 16>, #<Show id: 7, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 2>] But, if I run: @shows = Show.find(:all, :order => "date, attending DESC") OR @shows = Show.find(:all, :order => "date, attending ASC") OR @shows = Show.find(:all, :order => "date ASC, attending DESC") I get the same results as only sorting by date: [#<Show id: 7, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 2>, #<Show id: 1, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 78>, #<Show id: 2, date: "2009-04-19", attending: 91>, #<Show id: 3, date: "2009-04-20", attending: 16>, #<Show id: 4, date: "2009-04-21", attending: 136>] Where as, I want to get these results: [#<Show id: 1, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 78>, #<Show id: 7, date: "2009-04-18", attending: 2>, #<Show id: 2, date: "2009-04-19", attending: 91>, #<Show id: 3, date: "2009-04-20", attending: 16>, #<Show id: 4, date: "2009-04-21", attending: 136>] This is the query being generated from the logs: [4;35;1mUser Load (0.6ms)[0m [0mSELECT * FROM "users" WHERE ("users"."id" = 1) LIMIT 1[0m [4;36;1mShow Load (3.0ms)[0m [0;1mSELECT * FROM "shows" ORDER BY date ASC, attending DESC[0m [4;35;1mUser Load (0.6ms)[0m [0mSELECT * FROM "users" WHERE ("users"."id" = 1) [0m Finally, here is my model: create_table "shows", :force => true do |t| t.string "headliner" t.string "openers" t.string "venue" t.date "date" t.text "description" t.datetime "created_at" t.datetime "updated_at" t.decimal "price" t.time "showtime" t.integer "attending", :default => 0 t.string "time" end What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? UPDATE: Thanks for all your help, but it seems that all of you were stumped as much as I was. What solved the problem was actually switching databases. I switched from the default sqlite3 to mysql.

  • How to update a TextView on ButtonClick with Spinner(s) values

    - by source.rar
    Hi, I am trying to populate a TextView based on the current selected options in 3 Spinner(s) but cant seem to figure out how to retrieve the selected values from the Spinners to invoke the update function with. Here is my current code (quite messy but I'm just learning Java :)), public class AgeFun extends Activity { private String[] dayNames; private String[] yearArray; private final static int START_YEAR = 1990; private static TextView textDisp; private Button calcButton; private static Spinner spinnerDay, spinnerYear, spinnerMonth; private static ArrayAdapter<?> monthAdapter, dayAdapter, yearAdapter; private int year, month, day; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); year = 2000; month = 1; day = 1; textDisp = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1); calcButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button); calcButton.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { // Perform action on clicks AgeFun.updateAge(year, month, day); } }); // Month spinner spinnerMonth = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerFirst); monthAdapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource( this, R.array.monthList, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item); monthAdapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); spinnerMonth.setAdapter(monthAdapter); // Day spinner dayNames = new String[31]; for(int i =1; i <= 31; ++i) { dayNames[i-1] = Integer.toString(i); } spinnerDay = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerSecond); dayAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<CharSequence>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, dayNames); spinnerDay.setAdapter(dayAdapter); // Year spinner yearArray = new String[40]; for(int i =0; i < 40; ++i) { yearArray[i] = Integer.toString(START_YEAR+i); } spinnerYear = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinnerThird); yearAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<CharSequence>(this, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item, yearArray); spinnerYear.setAdapter(yearAdapter); updateAge(2000,1,1); } private static void updateAge(int year, int month, int day) { Date dob = new GregorianCalendar(year, month, day).getTime(); Date currDate = new Date(); long age = (currDate.getTime() - dob.getTime()) / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24) / 365; textDisp.setText("Your are " + Long.toString(age) + " years old"); } } Any help with this would be great. TIA

  • FormsAuthentication AuthCookie data type

    - by FreshCode
    Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.

  • How put <Spanned> into list.setAdapter?

    - by svebee
    Simple but little tricky, if I have list.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,R.layout.double_row, R.id.doubleRow, articleItemsHelper)); it works if articleItemsHelper is String, but I wanna have HTML formatting in there so when articleItemsHelper is type Spanned this (adapter) doesn't work. ArrayList<Spanned> articleItemsHelper = new ArrayList<Spanned>(); What's the solution?

  • Extract dates from filename(C#3.0)

    - by Newbie
    I have a situation where I need to extract dates from the file names whose general pattern is [filename_]YYYYMMDD[.fileExtension] e.g. "xxx_20100326.xls" or x2v_20100326.csv The below program does the work //Number of charecter in the substring is set to 8 //since the length of YYYYMMDD is 8 public static string ExtractDatesFromFileNames(string fileName) { return fileName.Substring(fileName.IndexOf("_") + 1, 8); } Is there any better option of achieving the same? I am basically looking for standard practice. I am using C#3.0 and dotnet framework 3.5 Thanks
