• How to test a .net application against a proxy?

  I need to support the use of proxy on our application that is using WCF connections. We do not have any proxy server on our network and I don't want to disrupt our corporate network by requesting a proxy installation. I was thinking of installing a proxy server on a local virtual machine and configurating Internet Explorer so that it will challenge that proxy. I don't know what proxy software to use (I don't want to install ISA server) and I don't know how to configure one. Does someone have any suggestion for a easy to use software that will require an authentication for any WCF services and do you have any guideline that would be helpful to know when testing a software against a proxy?

This is to ensure the service contracts don't differ from time of release. I would like my tests to be self contained and not rely on any external resources such as hosting on IIS.   Hello I've got an application which serves an rss feed of headlines and I need to provide this rss feed to other consumers. I don't want to provide the rss directly from my server though, due to limited server resources, so I need to proxy (cache) it through some service which will handle the load. Assuming the rss feed URL of my application is http://example.com/rss I initially provided my consumers with the url http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/feed/load?v=1.0&q=http%3A%2F%2Fexample.com%2Frss which solved my server load problem but introduced a liveness problem. The headlines are minutes to hours late from the actual feed (haven't exactly measured how much late). I've also tried distributing through feedburner so the url became something like http://feeds.feedburner.com/example123?format=xml but the liveness problem still exists. Is there a public and free solution for this problem? Anything below 5 minutes of liveness delay would be totally acceptable. thanks

I would like to create a DLL that I drop into the Bin folder instead of writing all my code inside the App_Code directory. Ideally, I want to create a project and reference it from the web site, but I am running into a difficult situation. The DLL will need to reference configuration and other DLLs located inside the bin folder of the website causing a circular reference. How do I get around this issue?

  I am at present developing a mvc4 project that comunicates to a set of wcf services. I am setting such up in tfs build for a team of developers. I am very much a newbie to fxcop and code analysis in general. I am currently researching it and have some questions following this: Is it recommended to use the rules that come with fxcop? Should it be included as a build task during builds? What is the value from it? Are there guidelines to what rules to abide by or is it best to go with the default? Is it correct to run the analysis as a post build event? I am a newbie to fxcop and would like some feedback. I am as it is integrating stylecop in to my build.

• How do you deploy your SharePoint solutions?

  I am now in the process of planning the deployment of a SharePoint solution into a production environment. I have read about some tools that promise an easy way to automate this process, but nothing that seems to fit my scenario. In the testing phase I have used SharePoint Designer to copy site content between the different development and testing servers, but this process is manual and it seems a bit unnecessary. The site is made up of SharePoint web part pages with custom web parts, and a lot of Reporting Services report definitions. So, is there any good advice out there in this vast land of geeks on how to most efficiently create and deploy a SharePoint site for a multiple deployment scenario? Edit Just to clarify. I need to deploy several "SharePoint Sites" into an existing site collection. Since SharePoint likes to have its sites in the SharePoint content database, just putting the files into IIS is not an option at this time.

I can think of a few ways to do this: Using a facility Using a component property Registering the collection as a service But all of them feel a bit... icky. What's the best way to manage this? Also, ideally I'd like to do this using the fluent API and constructor injection. • Shared WCF client code between .NET and Silverlight apps?

  I'm developing a .NET application that will have both a WinForms and a Silverlight client. Although the majority of code will be in the server, I'll need to have quite a bit of logic in the clients as well, and I would like to keep the client library code the same. From what I could figure out so far, I need to have two different project types, a class library and a Silverlight class library, and link the files from one project to the other. This seems kind of lame, but it works for simple code. My problem, though, is that the code generated by the SVCUtil.exe to access WCF services is different from the code generated by the slsvcutil.exe, and the silverlight code is actually incompatible with the .NET one: I get a bunch of problems with the System.ServiceModel.Channel classes when I try to import the class into .NET. Has anybody done anything similar to this before? What am I doing wrong?

I know there are some standard mocks available in Spring, but I'd like to be able to mock out my own classes declaratively too. Just to check I'm not going about this the wrong way: the idea is to have a pair of JUnit test and Spring config for each integration test I want to do, mocking everything except the specific integration aspect I'm testing (say I had a dependency on two different data services, test one at a time) and minimising the amount of repeated Java code specifying the mocks.

All they are intended to work with one SQL Server database, generated from an Entity Framework 4 model as table-per-type, with lots of inheritance and multiple self-referencing relations. Where do I best put my model? In a separate class library, a copy in every project, in one project, etc. What naming should I best use? Is it good idea to name it MySolution.MyClassLibrary.MySolutionEntities, or just MySolutionEntities or just MySolution? Can you share any useful experience on this subject?

• In a client-server relationship, should the server always rethrow the exception to the client?

  I have a set of web services (the server), and an app which consumes this (client). In this sort of relationship, should the server always throw exceptions (ie in the throw block, rethrow the caught exception), and the client catch this. Exceptions which the server can handle, it will deal with and not rethrow, but everything else will be thrown to the calling layer for further action (the consuming app can raise a msg box or whatever). Is this a good example of an exception that can be dealt with: A file cannot be written because the directory requires special privileges, so if this raises an exception, the file is written somewhere which does not require admin rights.   I have three models: Service has_many :prices has_many :groups, through: prices Price belongs_to :service belongs_to :group Group has_many :prices I want to have an input field (Simple_Form) for every price. In views/services/_form.html.haml I do: simple_form_for @service do |f| simple_fields_for :groups do |g| simple_fields_for :prices do |p| p.input :price With this setup I only get input fields for already saved prices. How I can get a price field for every group? I tried to do it manually, but it got really nasty and didn't work either. Thanks for any ideas!

  Good afternoon. I have a domain and server that I've procured for non-HTML services. Should anyone stumble across port 80 of this server, I'd like to serve them a page explaining what the domain & server is for, instead of just 404'ing them. How can I serve one small, static, independent (i.e.: no images or CSS) HTML file, with a minimum of effort (meaning both a smooth setup for me, and minimum CPU expense). The server contains an untouched installation of ArchLinux, and I'm open to solutions in any language.   I'm using ASP.NET 4.0 Visual Studio 2010 RC version Sql Server Report Services (SSRS) ReportViewer and are aware that columns only display on PDF export - not the preview. I want to use a matrix embedded in a table on a page that has multiple columns. I've done some testing and frustratingly found that if you have a tablix with at least one grouped column (even if there is only one displayed matrix-like column group) the columns seem to be disabled. Once I remove the tablix with a grouped column from the tablix from the report the report does multiple-columns. Does anyone know a way around this?

  I am about to start a project which consumes third party web services. Because of a legacy system, I am told that I can only use Visual Studio 2005/.NET 2.0. (Though I would have preferred Visual Studio 2008 on .NET 3.5) My understanding is that WCF was released with .NET 3.0. So is there any possibility to use WCF on Visual Studio 2005 by using just the WCF assemblies of .NET 3.0? I will then try to convince them that it is just like using external framework which doesn't disturb anything.

• SharePoint 2010 Development on Virtual Machine - Windows 7 or Server 2008?

  I recently switched to a MacBook Pro for my development machine (for many reasons). I want to setup a Virtual Machine for ASP.NET, IIS, and Visual Studio 2010 development. I also have need to do some development work with SharePoint 2010. What I am wondering is if I should use Windows 7 (64 bit) or Windows Server 2008 (64 bit) as the OS for my development virtual machine. I don't really need most of the services running in Server 2008 so I felt that Windows 7 would probably run faster in the VM environment however I am fairly new to SharePoint 2010 so I am not sure if Windows 7 (64 bit) can be used as a development environment for it.   Hey all, So I've been plagued by this issue, whenever I try to run my app in eclipse, I get this error. 2011-02-23 09:55:08,388 ERROR (com.xxxxx.services.factory.ServiceInvokerLocal:21) - java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc10 in java.library.path I've tried following the steps I found here with no luck. I've tried this on a XP VM as well as windows 7 (although in win 7 I get a different error, below) java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc9 in java.library.path I've made sure my oracle client was ok (by running TOAD) and I also re-added the classes12.jar / ojdbc14.jars to my WEB-INF/lib folder taken directly from my %ORACLE_HOME% folder (also re-added them to the lib path). I've also tried just adding the ojdbc14.jar without the classes12.jar. Any suggestions appreciated. In the XP VM I have my PATH variable set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_24\bin;C:\ORACLE\product\10.2.0.1\BIN. I'm using Tomcat server 5.0
