• Future of a ServiceStack based Solution in the Context of Licensing

  I just want someone to clarify the following questions as Demis Bellot had announced a couple of weeks ago that ServiceStack would go commercial. Refer link below. https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z12tfvoackvnx1xzd04cfrirpvybu1nje54 (Please note that when I say ServiceStack or SS I refer to all associated SS libraries such as ServiceStack.Text, etc.) If I have a solution already developed using ServiceStack today will I have to purchase a license once SS goes commercial even if I don't upgrade the SS binaries to the commercial release version? Will previous versions of SS (prior to commercial licensing) always be opensource and use the same license as before? If I fork SS today (prior to commercial licensing) on Github, would it be illegal to maintain that after SS goes commercial? If the answer to question 2 is yes, then would I still be able to fork a previous version after SS goes commercial without worrying about the commercial license (all the while maintaining and releasing the source to the public)?

• Pros and cons of hosted scripts

  I have seen some developers use hosted scripts to link their libraries. cdn.jquerytools.org is one example. I have also seen people complain that a hosted script link has been hijacked. How safe is using hosted scripts in reality? Are the scripts automatically updated? For example, if jQuery 5 goes to 6 do I automatically get version 6 or do I need to update my link? I also see that Google has a large set of these scripts setup for hosting. What are the pros and cons?

• How does one pronounce "cron" as in "cron job"?

  Before someone ban-hammers this question as they do with all other pronunciation questions, let me explain its relevance. Verbal communication among co-workers and partners is important; today I was on a conference call with people discussing what I thought was something to do with "Chrome", as in Google Chrome. I pronounce the "cron" in "cron job" with a short O, much like "tron", "gone," or "pawn", but this individual pronouced it with a long O, as in "hone", "bone", or "stone" (notice the e at the end of all those!). Is there a standard pronunciation? Or is this a matter of opinion. For example, there's nothing ambiguous about the pronunciation of "Firefox", but debate is raging over "potato" and "tomato".

• SEO URL structure for tag search on site

  I am looking to add tags to each product on my site e.g. brown, x products under £x, second hand x, refurbished x etc. Once you click these tags it will then search for other tags that are similar. I was thinking of using a url structure of www.site.com/tags/this%is%the%tag%name and then simply have a page that shows the results of all the products with that tag. I heard a while back that google generally ignores or downgrades anything with ‘search’ in the url and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? Also, would you say /tags/ is a pretty valid destination or is it best to break it down and add more levels e.g. /product-type/product%variation Thanks in advance!

• Hosting django backend for iPhone / Android app

  I am looking to make an iPhone / Android app for my university using the Appcelerator Titanium framework. The app will rely heavily on a server backend which will pull information from other sites, figuring out what is relevant to the user then deliver the content. Some of the information is individual to the user (calendar data), other bits are updates frequently but are shared (bus timetables) and others are static and the same for everyone (magazine articles). I was going to use django as I am fairly proficent in python so I thought it would save time. My question is, which hosting services do you recommend to host the server backend? I am expecting about 9000 people to use the app with very random spikes in traffic, but unfortunately I have very little to go on at this stage. I have heard a lot about Webfaction, is it suitable for something like this or am I likely to need something bigger? I don't really want to fork out for a VPS at this stage. What about Amazons EC2? Would that be more suitable than Webfaction? Sorry for the fairly open ended question, Im sort of new to this so I open to all suggestions.

• Open Source Errors on Apple Cruch

  I've been looking around and I finally got the full source code called Apple-Crunch from google code. But when I put it into my project, the source code included so many errors in the class files such as: cannot be resolved into a type the constructor is undefined the method method() is undefined for the type Sprite class.java I downloaded the source directly from the command-line and noticed errors popping up on my project. Since i couldn't figure out how to import the actual folder into my workspace(it wouldn't show up on existing projects) I decided to copy and overwrite the folders into the project. The Errors were still there so I looked at the class files and noticed that the classes with errors extended from 'RokonActivity'. I then proceeded to add to the libs folder the rokon library in hopes to fix the errors. Sadly it didn't work and now I don't what to do to fix the errors. How do i fix the errors without having to manually change the code? The source code should be fully functional so why is there errors?

  Why should a programmer ever fork a library for inclusion in a widely used application? I ask this question because I was reading an article about why Chromium isn't packaged for many Linux distros like Fedora. Apparently its largely due to the fact that Google has forked a number of libraries, modified them, and included them in Chromium. This has driven up the complexity of packaging releases. There are a number of reasons why this can be a bad thing, but how strong a case can you actually make for doing so in a large widely used application such as Chromium? • Is there any way to synchronize Outlook RSS Feeds with BlackBerry?

  Does anyone know how I can view the contents of my Outlook 2007 RSS Feeds from a corporate-issued BlackBerry? Our Inbox and Calendar are already integrated with corporate exchange servers but it looks like nobody cares too much about the RSS Feeds. Is there some setting on my Blackberry or in Outlook I could possibly tweak to include these updates? I know there are many standalone RSS readers available for blackberry (Google Reader for example) but I mention Outlook RSS Feeds specifically in my question because I am subscribing to a number of RSS feeds I've setup on my intranet for various version control systems that would be inaccessible to an external RSS reader. It seems like I might have to setup some sort of email commit notifications if I want anything from my blackberry but I much prefer the 'pull' method of an RSS feed viewer over receiving streams of emails. Please feel free to suggest any alternatives! Edit: I've additionally tried moving my "SVN Repository" folder directly into my Mailbox instead of keeping it as a child of the RSS Feeds folder. This allows me to view the SVN Repository folder on my blackberry where previously the RSS Feeds folder and all children were hidden but unfortunately it never seems to get populated with the items that are displaying in Outlook. I've even made a fresh commit to make sure that the SVN Repository folder still works correctly in Outlook from outside the RSS Feeds folder but no luck on the BlackBerry end of things.   I know it is goofy to geek out about such things, but I am a pretty goofy geek.  Today we published support for the Apple icons for devices like the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.  Now when you add Geekswithblogs.net to your home screen (via the little + in Safari) it will load the icon to the left instead of a screenshot of the site.  We have been using my iPhone and iPad to surf to GWB for awhile and we were tired of that screenshot.  Simple Google/Bing search and a little Photoshop CS5 (Amazing!!!) work and there it is.  Next step we are taking in the Apple iPad/Phone arena is getting our developer kit and seeing what possiblities there are for Geekswithblogs.net and a custom App.  Got any ideas?   It is written everywhere that lack of original content is has a negative impact on ranking. But what is lack of original content? (I am not talking about duplicate content) I guess if you copy other site's content, this makes sense. But, assuming one develops its own functionalities, but similar functionalities are already available on other sites, is this considered lack of original content? Can Google decide to not index such pages (i.e., not give them a chance at all)? Are there other definition of 'lack of original content'?

Pros: multi platform, I even heard Google is going to implement it in Chrome everything you need is here scripting languages makes it a good choice for people who are not programming gurus Cons: multiplayer ? proprietary, you are totally dependent of unity and its limit and can't extend it it's less "making a game from scratch" C++ would have been a cool thing I really think this kind of tool is interesting, but is it worth it to use at school for a project that involves more than 3 programming persons ? What do we really learn in term of programming from using this kind of tool (I'm ok with python and js, but I hate C#) ? • How do I make Empathy match my keyring with my password?

  I changed my password a few months ago from the password I first used when I installed Ubuntu on my machine. I tried to add a Google Talk account to Empathy, but every time Empathy gives me a message saying the following: Enter password to unlock your login keyring The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring. I do not remember my original password and I'm not sure if I should go to Prefrences Passwords and Keys and delete my login password or if there is a way to change the keyring so that it matches up with my current password.

• What is the best HTML specification to be used as of Q1 2011?

  While developing a web application, what is the best spec to use? HTML4.01 HTML5 XHTML trans XHTML1.1 I was taught to use XHTML1.0 strict in uni and to avoid applet/iframe/tables(except in forms). I noticed that some deprecated tags are available in HTML5. Is it safe to code in HTML5? If so should I use target='', and the aforementioned tags? I have noticed that there are many alternatives to choose from including canvas, object. I have no preference, although Iframe tags are being dispensed from sources like Facebook/Google/etc. What would be the best avenue to take for Spec as of now(Feb 2011)?
