Attempting to calculate width of Map Overlays on the fly

Hey all- I am working on an Android app that utilizes the Google Maps API MapView, MapController, MapActivity, and ItemizedOverlay. I am basically trying to recreate certain functionalities of the Maps app (damn Google for not providing speech bubbles—for lack of a better name—for items!), particularly those speech bubbles. I have an invisible XML structure for the speech bubble in the XML layout file containing my MapView. The first time I show a speech bubble I grab that XML and remove it from it's current parent, applying some ItemizedOverlay.LayoutParams to it, and add it to the MapView as an Overlay. I position it above the item that was selected, fill it with the proper text, then set it to visible. This all works great. The goal here, though, is to also automatically animate the map to reveal any parts of a speech bubble that may be off-screen when it opens. So I'm trying popup.getWidth() (popup is the instance of my LinearLayout that is the speech bubble) after I do all the manipulation to the bubble, even after I display it to the user. Problem is, popup.getWidth() is returning me the width of the previously displayed popup, not the currently displayed one. I can't figure out why this would be happening if I'm fetching the width after I set it to visible with its new dimensions (which, by the way, are relative when I'm setting them with LayoutParams: fill_content for both width and height).. I have even tried forcing both the MapView and the "popup" to invalidate() before trying to fetch the width. Any ideas why this may be happening? How can I force the View to settle into its new dimensions before trying to fetch them? Thanks! Nick

Firefox and Chrome do not support cross-domian ajax by default?

I have xml document in variable (not in file). How can i get data storaged in that? I don't have any additional file with that, i have it 'inside' my sourcecode. How to Validate an XML Node against an XSD in C++?

Hi Please note that I'm asking for validation against a particular node and not the whole file. For examples <somexmldoc> <someNode> <UserDefinedNode> </> <UserDefinedNode> </> </someNode> </somexmldoc> For this XML doc, I have an wholeDoc.XSD which could be used to validate the whole document except "UserDefinedNode" (This node is specified with "any" tag in xsd, which allows a user to define anything under that node). Is it possible to have a separate userdefined.XSD file to validate "UserDefinedNode"? Is it possible to use MSXML for C++ (IXMLDomDocument) to validate this? Thanks!

Hi All Using CGPDFDocument class we can read pdf document, get number of pages, get a page by number. Is there any other library that helps us reading word documents like microsoft word doc where we can get number of pages and get a page by its number etc? Do not want to use safari to view the document. What is the correct approach to using GWT with persistent objects?

Hi, I am currently working on a simple web application through Google App engine using GWT. It should be noted that this is my first attempt at such a task. I have run into to following problem/dilema: I have a simple Class (getters/setters and nothing more. For the sake of clarity I will refer to this Class as DataHolder) and I want to make it persistent. To do so I have used JDO which required me to add some annotations and more specifically add a Key field to be used as the primary key. The problem is that using the Key class requires me to import com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Key which is ok on the server side, but then I can't use DataHolder on the client side, because GWT doesn't allow it (as far as I know). So I have created a sister Class ClientDataHolder which is almost identical, though it doesn't have all the JDO annotations nor the Key field. Now this actually works but It feels like I'm doing something wrong. Using this approach would require maintaining to separate classes for each entity I wish to have. So my question is: Is there a better way of doing this? Thank you.

Do MySQL Locked Tables affect related Views?

So after reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1415602/performance-in-pdo-php-mysql-transaction-versus-direct-execution in regards to performance issues I was thinking about I did some research on locking tables in MySQL. On http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/table-locking.html Table locking enables many sessions to read from a table at the same time, but if a session wants to write to a table, it must first get exclusive access. During the update, all other sessions that want to access this particular table must wait until the update is done. This part struck me particularly becuase most of our queries will be updates rather than inserts. I was wondering if one created a table called foo on which all updates/inserts were carried out and then a view called foo_view (A copy of foo, or perhaps foo and a linkage of several other tables plus foo) on which all selects occured, would this locking issue still occur? That is, would SELECT quries on foo_view still have to wait for an update to finish on foo?

jquery animate() problem (syntax ?)

But i debugged it with jquery.lint because it was throwing some random error in IE. lint tells me: When I called animate(...) with your args, an error was thrown! TypeError: c.speed is not a function { message="c.speed is not a function", more...} You passed: [Object { marginLeft="-=640px"}, 800, function()] and it indicates me the line i have posted. I have checked the jquery doc, but my syntax seams ok. Do you know what i am doing wrong? PS: i use jquery 1.4.2 from the google API you can see the error here: http://meodai.ch/slider/ (i know the code is under construction, but still)

Client-Side caching on IIS7 doesn't seem to work

I have set content caching on a specific folder by following the local web.config method. I don't think it works, and I would like to fix this. I activate the cache using the IIS / HTTP Headers / Common headers feature. I set them to 1 day of expiration. I opened a page with Google Chrome in private navigation, and then open the Network tab in the console. The first time I load the page, everything loads from the site, obviously. If I refresh the page, I see 2 types of loading in the Network console: the files from Google and Facebook and such have a status of 200, and a size of (from cache). the files from the folder for which I set the caching have a status of 304 and their size is displayed. So, I guess the caching setting doesn't work? Or does the 304 response means that it's loaded from the cache? If they aren't, how can I make it work ? Thanks !

I'm using google blogger. I want to ad thumbnail images of different classes I will be offering in my home film/video/sound/lighting studio. The idea is the prospective student visits my website, sees a class they want to take, clicks the thumbnail so first read a descriptive article about the class, at which point they can schedule the class for the time, day, and date of their choosing between the hours of 5am to 9pm, 365 days a year. As soon as the student has inputed the time, day and date of the class they want, they would go to a check out page to purchase the class time. The student would then be sent an email confirmation along with the exact location, the class name, and the time and date they selected. I was thinking of using Dwolla for the check out page because Dwolla offers either no fee or 25 cents per payment transaction, but I'm not sure I can hook up to them easily enough. My blog site is not finished by a longshot. I still have to actually input all of the class thumbnail images along with descriptions, but if you need to see what the page looks like the web address is http://www.myalexlogic.com Google blogger allows for third party code to be added within movable gadgets.

Wrong shortcut icons on the desktop and in the programs menu

When creating a program setup, I also put some documentation or readme files in it. However after the program is installed, I get wrong icons on the desktop and in the programs menu, as below: What I expected: I thought that for the registered file types (such as pdf, txt, doc, etc.) I don't need to set icons manually in the setup project. Am i wrong? As far as I know some other installers doesn't have such problem. Does anybody know how to fix this for Visual Studio? My environment is: Visual Studio 2005, C#, Windows XP Pro SP3

Any way to avoid a filesort when order by is different to where clause?

I have an incredibly simple query (table type InnoDb) and EXPLAIN says that MySQL must do an extra pass to find out how to retrieve the rows in sorted order. SELECT * FROM `comments` WHERE (commentable_id = 1976) ORDER BY created_at desc LIMIT 0, 5 exact explain output: table select_type type extra possible_keys key key length ref rows comments simple ref using where; using filesort common_lookups common_lookups 5 const 89 commentable_id is indexed. Comments has nothing trick in it, just a content field. The manual suggests that if the order by is different to the where, there is no way filesort can be avoided. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/order-by-optimization.html I also tried order by id as well as it's equivalent but makes no difference, even if I add id as an index (which I understand is not required as id is indexed implicitly in MySQL). thanks in advance for any ideas!

Doesn't (didn't) Scala have automatically generated setters?

Google and my failing memory are both giving me hints that it does, but every attempt is coming up dry. class Y { var y = 0 } var m = new Y() m.y_(3) error: value y_ is not a member of Y Please tell me I am doing something wrong. (Also: please tell me what it is I am doing wrong.) EDIT The thing I am not doing wrong, or at least not the only thing I am doing wrong, is the way I am invoking the setter. The following things also fail, all with the same error message: m.y_ // should be a function valued expression m.y_ = (3) // suggested by Google and by Mchl f(m.y_) // where f takes Int => Unit as an argument f(m.y) // complains that I am passing in Int not a function I am doing this all through SimplyScala, because I'm too lazy and impatient to set up Scala on my tiny home machine. Hope it isn't that... And the winner is ... Fabian, who pointed out that I can't have a space between the _ and the =. I thought out why this should be and then it occurred to me: The name of the setter for y is not y_, it is y_= ! Detecting well behaved / well known bots

I found this question very interesting : Programmatic Bot Detection I have a very similar question, but I'm not bothered about 'badly behaved bots'. I am tracking (in addition to google analytics) the following per visit : Entry URL Referer UserAgent Adwords (by means of query string) Whether or not the user made a purchase etc. The problem is that to calculate any kind of conversion rate I'm ending up with lots of 'bot' visits that are greatly skewing my results. I'd like to ignore as many as possible bot visits, but I want a solution that I don't need to monitor too closely, and that won't in itself be a performance hog and preferably still work if someone has javascript disabled. Are there good published lists of the top 100 bots or so? I did find a list at http://www.user-agents.org/ but that appears to contain hundreds if not thousands of bots. I don't want to check every referer against thousands of links. Here is the current googlebot UserAgent. How often does it change? Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

In Firefox, how to bring an existing popup window with multiple tabs to the front using javascript f

I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code generally works in Firefox, Safari, and IE8 (see here for Chrome woes). However, I have found a failure mode in Firefox that I don't know how to deal with: If for some reason the user has opened a second tab in the pop-up window and that second tab has focus within that window, the popupWindow.focus() command fails to have any effect. (If the first tab has focus within that window, everything works just great.) Why does Indy 10's echo server have high CPU usage when the client disconnects?

When I disconnect echo client like : EchoClient1.Disconnect; client disconnects fine... but EchoServer does NOT EVEN register client disconnection and it ends up with high process usage !?!? in every example and every doc it says that calling EchoClient.Disconnect is sufficient ! anyone, any idea ? (I am working in Win7, cloud that be a problem ?) Using Dom Objects in PHP, the default namespace is redeclared in some nodes.

I'm working on a template engine, having migrated from regex driven to DOM driven. It appears though, that whenever I create a DomDocumentFragment to encapsulate some portion of a document temporarily, the namespace attribute is added to each node in the fragment. Since my default namespace for a given document will 99% of the time be XHTML, it's adding the XHTML namespace declaration. Being the default namespace, this seems fruitless, and ultimately nodes in any other namespace will be stripped out at render time anyways. Aside from iteratively removing namespace attributes, is there some way I can prevent this from occurring to begin with? Its quite problematic, as this will likely increase render time filesize considerably, as large portions of a given document may be stored in a fragment. I've tried $doc->normalizeDocument(), but as I assumed, it did nothing.
