• How best to backup 6x Win2k3 Servers

  We have a external HP LTO3 tape drive. It needs to backup 6 Windows 2003 machines every night. Servers are HP DL380 G3 and the tape drive is attached locally to one of them via SCSI. On a budget of $0, and a goal of keeping-it-simple, what is going to be the best way to backup these machines? What software to use? NT Backup? Or does HP have something better for free? We don't need image backups - file system + system state will be adequate. Do we need to copy the files to be backed up onto the machine with the tape drive attached? Edit: Let me ask a more focussed question: Would you use NT Backup or something else? No soap boxing please, we've after some quick advice from someone who's used a similar setup.

• Is it better to hard code data or find an algorithm?

  I've been working on a boardgame that has a hex grid as the board (the upper right grid in the image below) Since the board will never change and the spaces on the board will always be linked to the same other spaces around it, should I just hard code every space with the values that I need? Or should I use various algorithms to calculate links and traversals? To be more specific, my board game is a 4 player game where each player has a 5x5x5x5x5x5 hex grid (again, the upper right grid in th eimage above). The object is to get from the bottom of the grid to the top, with various obstacles in the way, and each players being able to attack eachother from the edge of their grid onto other players based on a range multiplier. Since the players grid will never change and the distance of any arbitrary space from the edge of the grid will always be the same, should I just hard code this number into each of the spaces, or should I still use a breadth first search algorithm when players are attacking? The only con I can think of for hard coding everything is that I'm going to code 9+ 2(5+6+7+8) = 61 individual cells. Is there anything else that I'm missing that I should consider using more complex algorithms?

• Best choice for off-site backup: dd vs tar

  I have two 1TB single-partition hard disks configured as RAID1, of which I would like to make an off-site backup on a third disk, which I am still to buy. The idea is to store the backup at a relative's house, considerably far away from my place, in the hope that all the information will be safe in the case of a global thermonuclear apocalypse. Of course, this backup would be well encrypted. What I still have to decide is whether I am going to simply tar the entire partition or, instead, use dd to create an image of the disks. Is there any non-trivial difference between these two approaches that I could be overlooking? This off-site backup would be updated no more than two or three times a year, in the best of the cases, so performance should not be a factor to be pondered at all. What, and why, would you use if you were me? dd, tar, or a third option?

  How to create a customized version of an xp installation cd. I want a hand's off installation that will install all the themes, drivers , and applications I need without my intervention. How can I do that. I tried to make use of this software called Nlite. But when I tested the iso file using virtual box. The virtual box said that there's a certain file that cannot be copied. And by the way, before I customized the original iso image of windows xp sp3, it doesn't have the file copying problem that I mentioned above.

  Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. • Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

  I am just getting into photography as a hobby, and am looking for some good tools for image uploading/browsing/editing. I am currently using the Canon EOS utility that came with the camera for uploading, Picasa for browsing, and GIMP for editing. Pros: The files are stored using the standard file system (no proprietary library like iPhoto) Great photo editing possibilities Free (except the Canon Utility, but that was bundled) Cons: Multiple programs Hard to view the Exif Data (I like the way that iPhoto displays the data) Over-simplified editing tools in Picasa What other tools should I look into? Also, I occasionally shoot in RAW, and would prefer Mac support (better monitor), but I also have windows and linux machines.

• Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04 via VNC does not refresh

  I've tried tightvncserver and vnc4server on Ubuntu. I've tried tightvnc viewer and ultravnc viewer on Windows XP. I can connect from Windows to Ubuntu with any combination, but there is no screen refresh: I can drag a window on Ubuntu using my mouse in Windows or type into a terminal in Ubuntu from my keyboard in Windows, but the image does not change on Windows. I can request a screen refresh from Windows but the screen does not update. I am running the ATI driver on Ubuntu. I've tried stepping the System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects down from Extra to Normal with no effect.

• Communication between WCF service [library] and Self-host [Winform]

  Introduction: I have a WCF service library and a self-host Winform. Service features is File explorer including (copy, move, delete, new folder, delete... etc) and Task Manager (run, kill, update list). Then now I want to add other features like chatting between self-host and client, send an image from client to self-host so when it received, it is shown in a pictureBox in a new form. Till now I have two endpoints for (Task Manager, File Manager) that runs under one service "MainService". And I set up all the connections using DotNet 4.0 WCF Configuration and Wizards, and I'm using netTcpBinding. Problem: I need to know how to communicate with between WCF service lib and self-host, so I can append a received chat from client on self-host form's textbox TextBoxChat. And also call a client callback from self-host when Send button clicked, to send the message from self-host textbox TextBoxMessage. Let's say this's self-host ChatForm So is it possible to do that in WCF? I would prefer to run ChatEndpoint under MainService, so all Endpoints use one port.

• How to copy a dynamic TrueCrypt volume quickly?

  I have created a dynamic TrueCrypt volume file, set it size to 40 GiB and put about 20 GiB of files on it. When I open the volume file properties it says "Size: 40.0 GB, Size on disk: 23.0 GB". When I try to move the volume file to another physical partition it takes a lot of time as it tries to copy all the 40 GB instead of just 20 GB that the volume file actually takes. Also, when it is less than 40 GB free on the target drive it says insufficient space even though it is more than enough space considering how much does the image file actually take. How do I overcome this? Creating a new volume file on the target drive works but needless to say I'd like a better solution.

• Is 12.10 ready from prime time?

  I recently installed 12.10 - dual boot using Wubi. I had numerous stability problems: many sporadic, unaccounted for system errors, software that was installed and then seemed to disappear from App Launcher, etc. Machine is new HP quad with 4 gig memory - wonderful piece of hardware - definitely no hardware problems there. I went back to 12.04 (installed from ISO image, not Wubi) and it's rock solid - never any issues at all. Is 12.10 not ready for prime time? Are there fixes-updates in the pipe? Should I get a DVD disc and install 12.10 from ISO instead of Wubi? New to Linux/Ubuntu after 20 years on MS/Windows and loving it - I develop in C++ and Python - maybe will try Lazarus since I know Delphi. Would like to use the latest and greatest Ubuntu but I will not sacrifice stabilty. Are there known problems with 12.10? Would using the standard install instead of Wubi help? Seems a lot of users are voting down this question - not sure why since other users have confirmed problems.

• How to connect to WPA2 encrypted wireless-network when booted from CloneZilla Live-CD?

  My intention is to perform a backup of my laptop's (Dell Vostro 3350) sda1 disk to my desktop. After some googling I decided to use CloneZilla for that purpose. I have an OpenSSH server installed and running on my desktop. So I inserted CloneZilla CD to CD-rom, booted from it, then chose an option smth like "use ssh server to store image". Then I got an invitation to choose a network interface. I chose wlan0 and entered shell to manualy configure connection. And that's where I got into trouble, for wifi-network which I wanted to use is WPA2-encrypted, and I don't know how to connect to it from command line. Can somebody assist me. Appreciation for advance.

  Sorry this is probably a very silly question, but for some reason i am confused. How does a LAN with bus or ring topology connect to a router and other LANs? For example in a star network they all connect to a switch which can then connect to a router, but where does a switch go and fit in a bus or ring topology? • Graphic Card Installation Failure (NV 9600M GT)

  I wanted to switch from 7 to Ubuntu. Now, the first thing that holds me back is the installation of the driver for my Nvidia 9600M GT. Ubuntu recommends me 4 drivers from the "Additional Driver" Section. Now, whatever driver I install, there are four things happening RANDOMLY after rebooting: The pc freezes before seeing bootup splash The pc freezes while seeing bootup splash image (ubuntu logo with the 5 dots) The pc gets into login screen and freezes instantly (Thought the unity-bar is transparent now) The pc freezes right after beeing able to login. (While this is happening the unity-bar changes from transparent to ugly-flat-style) I also tried to install the official Nvidia .run file but after exiting the X-Server, it says the driver is not compatible with the kernel and exits installation. Can somebody help me? I really wanna get rid of Windows :( But Ubuntu drives me perfectly insane. Please answer as noobish as possible. I'm an expert Windows user, but Linux is absolutely new to me. My Specs: Ubuntu 11.10 installed from USB Stick (like 100 times now :/ because I dont know how to remove the driver in recovery mode) 9600M GT 4GB Ram Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.26GHz Win 7 and Ubuntu running along side.   Today I have been working on automatic deployment of an ubuntu server. I got stuck on automatic updating of the server using apt-get upgrade trying to upgrade to a new kernel. • How to prevent 2D camera rotation if it would violate the bounds of the camera?

  I'm working on a Camera class and I have a rectangle field named Bounds that determines the bounds of the camera. I have it working for zooming and moving the camera so that the camera cannot exit its bounds. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do the same for rotation. Currently I allow rotating of the camera's Z-axis. However, if sufficiently zoomed out, upon rotating the camera, areas of the screen outside the camera's bounds can be shown. I'd like to deny the rotation assuming it meant that the newly rotated camera would expose areas outside the camera's bounds, but I'm not quite sure how. I'm still new to Matrix and Vector math and I'm not quite sure how to model if the newly rotated camera sees outside of its bounds, undo the rotation. Here's an image showing the problem: http://i.stack.imgur.com/NqprC.png The red is out of bounds and as a result, the camera should never be allowed to rotate itself like this. This seems like it would be a problem with all rotated values, but this is not the case when the camera is zoomed in enough. Here are the current member variables for the Camera class: private Vector2 _position = Vector2.Zero; private Vector2 _origin = Vector2.Zero; private Rectangle? _bounds = Rectangle.Empty; private float _rotation = 0.0f; private float _zoom = 1.0f; Is this possible to do? • Permission denied on /dev/xvdf despite sudo?

  I'm trying to get a stream off port 9999 and write to /dev/xvdf. I'm using Amazon EC2 with the Ubuntu 11.10 server image. By default I log in as 'ubuntu' which has sudo privileges. Update: Something mysterious is running in the background that resets the permissions? • Keeping Aspect Screen Ration While Stays in Center

  I sqw and I tried this suggestion on PISTACHIO BRAINSTORMIN* on how to make a good and adaptive screen ration. For every different screen size, let's say I put the perfect circle as a Texture in LibGDX and played it on screen. Here's the blueberry image example and it's perfectly rounded: When I played it on the Google Nexus 7, the circle turn into a slightly oblonng shape, resembling as it was being flatten a bit. Please observe this snapshot below and you can see the blueberry is almost but slightly not perfectly rounded: Now, when I tried the suggested code for aspect ratio, the perfect circle retained but another problem is occured. The problem is that I expecting for a view on center but instead it's been moved to the right offset leaving with a half black screen. • Project collision shapes to plane for 2.5D collision detection

  I am working on a top down 2.5D game. In the game anything that overlaps on the screen should be 'colliding' with each other regardless of whether they are on the same plane in the 3D world. This is illustrated below from a side-ways view: The orange and green circles are spheres floating in the 3D world. They are projected onto a plane parallel to the viewport plane (y = 0 in the image) and if they overlap there is a collision event between them. These spheres are attached to other meshes to represent the sphere bounding boxes for collisions. The way I plan to implement this at the moment is the following: Get the 3D world position at the center of the sphere. Use Camera.WorldToViewportPoint to project the point to the viewport plane. Move a Sphere Collider with the radius of the sphere to that point. Test for collisions using unity colliders. My question is how to extend this to work for rotated cuboids. For instance if I have two rotated cuboids, if I follow the logic above it would not work as intended as the cuboids may not collide but they could still be intersected on the view plane. An example is below: Is there a way to project a cuboid that would be aligned with the plane? Would it be a valid cuboid for all rotations if I did this?
