• Apache Virtual host (SSL) Doc Root issue

  I am having issues with the SSL document root of my vhosts configuration. Http sees to work fine and navigates to the root directory and publishes the page fine - DocumentRoot /var/www/html/websites/ssl.domain.co.uk/ (as specified in my vhost config) However, https seems to be looking for files in the main apache document root found further up the httpd.conf file, and is not being overwritten by the vhost config. (I assume that vhost config does overwrite the default doc root?). DocumentRoot: The directory out of which you will serve your documents. By default, all requests are taken from this directory, but symbolic links and aliases may be used to point to other locations. DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/websites/" Here is my config, I am quite a new Linux guy so any advise is appreciated on why this is happening!? • PHP displays blank white page even with all error reporting enabled

  I am trying to debug a broken page in a Drupal application and am having a hard time getting PHP to spit anything useful out. I have the following set: error_reporting = E_ALL display_errors = On display_startup_errors = On log_errors = On error_log = /var/log/php/php_error.log I have a file showing me phpinfo() which confirms these variables are set correctly for the environment. I have increased memory_limit to 256M (which should be more than enough). Yet, the only indication I get is a status 500 code in the apache access log and a blank white page from PHP. • Asus K50I sound issues

  I have an Asus K50IJ (Bestbuy) laptop and have issues with my sound. Speakers themselves work fine but when I plug into the headphone jack it auto mutes the front channel and no sounds comes out of either the speakers or the headphones. If I then unmute the channel I get sound from both the speakers and the headphones. alsamixer shows the Headphone channel as all grayed out. /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I have tried snd-hda-intel model="asus-laptop" and snd-hda-intel model="asus" In Sound Preferences I have gone to output and changed the Connector to 'Analog Headphones' that results in no sound from either speakers or headphones. • How do I install php 5.3 on CentOS?

  Hi, I have to install php5.3 on my centos server. If i do yum install php, the base repo installs 5.1.6 which is too old for the apps i need to install. • VT-x not enabled on 2010 Mac Pro

  To start I had a Hackintosh as per the instructions from Lifehacker.com before and moved everything to a new 2010 8 Core Mac Pro. I opted for a restore from the time machine backup rather than using the migration assistance. I believe this may have caused more problems but one in particular is the lack of VT-x support. When I checked Parallels Desktop under "Host Hardware" information, I get the following that shows that VT-x isn't enabled. <Cpu dyn_lists=""> <Number>16</Number> <Model>Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz</Model> <Mode>1</Mode> <Speed>2400</Speed> <VtxEnabled>0</VtxEnabled> <VtxMode>1</VtxMode> 1) Does Parallels Desktop support using VT-x? 2) Does this setting show that my VT-x isn't enabled? 3) Is there a way of fixing it so that it is enabled? 4) Is there a way of using my Time Machine backup as if I'm doing a restore using migration assistance and just restore the files and settings?

• Printer spooler service stop running when sent print job

  Every time i am sending a print job to the printer, i am don't get any response from the printer, and at the printer job list at the status of the job, i see that there was an Error, but it don't give me any clue on what could be the problem. After some investigation i found that every time that i send the print job to the printer the printer spooler service stops to run, then after a second or two it start again (i think that this behavior is related to the printer spooler settings to rerun it self after it stops). Things that i have tried so far: Remove and Install again the Driver. After removing the driver, i have removed the unnecessary registry keys according to this article from Microsoft, these are: Rename all files and folders in: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 Remove anything but Drivers Print and Processors: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86 Remove anything in here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors but: BJ Language Monitor Local Port Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor Microsoft Shared Fax Monitor Standard TCP/IP Port USB Monitor WSD Port Disconnect and Reconnect the Printer. Clean the computer from Viruses & Spywares. Currently i am stuck, i have no more things to try, if anybody know about any kind of solution please let me know about it. Since i am want to keep this post as general problem that relate to the printer spooler, and not just my particular problem, i didn't included inside the windows version & the printer model, they are (although i think that it isn't relate just for that particular model): Windows 7 32bit, HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (connect to the computer via USB). Sure it will block some legit packets but if it means keeping the box up it works till the attack goes away but I would like to LEARN how to FIND other common things in a packet to block with IPTables

• Windows 7 Install: No drives were found

  I was building a computer for my wife with an older SATA hard drive that I had lying around, and when attempting to do a new install of Windows 7 on it, the installer says: "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation." I ran the diskpart command: list volume, and it showed up as "Raw". So, I formatted it to NTFS and then it showed up as a healthy drive in diskpart. I also ran check disk on it with no errors. Windows 7 installer STILL can't find the drive. As far as BIOS settings, I have tried "Native IDE", AHCI, and Both AHCI/IDE mode (SATA slots 0-2 AHCI, 3-4 IDE). I tried all combinations... still "no drives were found". At this point, I'm just scratching my head. Using the installation dos window, I can see and talk to the drive just fine, but the installer just doesn't see it at all. I've even written folders and files to the drive, and it still "can't be seen". Any help would be great. Items of interest: Motherboard model: Gigabyte GA-A75M-UD2H - BIOS Version F5 (latest) Hard drive model: 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST380817AS (no other drives) Installing Windows 7 using a FAT32 formatted USB Drive, which I've used for other installs

• Hard Disk Not Counting Reallocated Sectors

  I have a drive that is reporting that the current pending sectors is "45". I have used badblocks to identify the sectors and I have been trying to write zeros to them with dd. From what I understand, when I attempt writing data directly to the bad sectors, it should trigger a reallocation, reducing current pending sectors by one and increasing the reallocated sector count. However, on this disk both Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Reallocated_Event_Count raw values are 0, and dd fails with I/O errors when I attempt to write zeros to the bad sectors. dd works fine, however, when I write to a good sector. # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 seek=217152 dd: error writing ‘/dev/sdb’: Input/output error Does this mean that my drive, in some way, has no spare sectors to be used for reallocation? Is my drive just in general a terrible person? (The drive isn't actually mine, I'm helping a friend out. They might have just gotten a cheap drive or something.) SMART support is: Enabled UPDATE: I have run shred on the disk, which has caused Current_Pending_Sector to go to zero. However, Reallocated_Sector_Ct and Reallocated_Event_Count are still zero, and dd is now able to write data to the sectors it was previously unable to. This leads me with several other questions: Why aren't the reallocations being recored by the disk? I'm assuming the reallocation took place as I can now write data directly to the sector and couldn't before. Why did shred cause reallocation and not dd? Does the fact that shred writes random data instead of just zeros make a difference?

• Package pinning in Debian lenny

  I need your advice as I don't know if I hit a bug, or I am misunderstanding something. On a Debian Lenny, I am trying to prevent the installation of two particular packages, when they are requested as dependencies fromother packages. I am using the same syntax I successfully used in Squeeze, but with no success at all. On squeeze, the following works as expected: # cat /etc/apt/preferences.d/local-no-pike.pref Package: pike7.6-core Pin: version * Pin-Priority: -1000 If I try to install pike7.6, which depends on pike7.6-core, apt and aptitude refuse to do so. On Lenny, the only difference is that there is no support for "fragments" in /etc/apt/preferences.d, and all preferences must be in the /etc/apt/preferences file. But it's not working. E.g., if the file contains: Package: grub-common Pin: version * Pin-Priority: -1000 apt doesn't stop me from installing grub, which depends on grub-common. I used strace to see if the file is being read, and it is. I was suggested to use some Debug:: options, but they didn't help to pinpoint the problem either. I have google'd a lot with some combinations of "lenny" "prevent" "package" "installation" "pinning" and the like, but nothing nice came out. And of course I read man apt_preferences. What am I missing here?

• computer freezes but music continues

  Recently I have had a problem where my computer will freeze completely but if I happen to be streaming Pandora in a tab that will continue playing. If I wait about 2-5 minutes it will eventually come back and start working normally. I also noticed that during the period that it is unresponsive that the HDD activity light stays lit the whole time, not flashing. I've ran memtest86+ and a diagnostic from Western Digital for my HDD model and none of them reported any errors. • Is there an objective way to measure slowness of PC/WINDOWS?

  We've a lot of users that usually complain about that his PC is "slow". (we use win XP). We usually check startup programs, virus, fragmentation, disk health and common problems that causes slowness (Symantec AV drops disk to 1mb/s , or a seagate HD firmware error in certain models), but in those cases the slowness is pretty evident. In other hand, the most common is the user complaining about his pc but for us looks OK, even in 6 years old desktops. People sometimes even complains about his new quad core desktops speed!!! So, we are asking if there's a way to OBJECTIVELY check that a computer didn't dropped its performance, compared with similar ones o previous measures, specially for work use (I don't think that 3dmark benchmark o similar may help). The only thing that I found that was useful is HDTune, but it only check hard disk performance. Basically, what we want is something that enable us to say to our users "see? your PC is as slow as was three years ago! stop complaining! Is all in your head!"

• How can I stop Excel from eating my delicious CSV files and excreting useless data?

  I have a database which tracks sales of widgets by serial number. Users enter purchaser data and quantity, and scan each widget into a custom client program. They then finalize the order. This all works flawlessly. Some customers want an Excel-compatible spreadsheet of the widgets they have purchased. We generate this with a PHP script which queries the database and outputs the result as a CSV with the store name and associated data. This works perfectly well too. When opened in a text editor such as Notepad or vi, the file looks like this: "Account Number","Store Name","S1","S2","S3","Widget Type","Date" "4173","SpeedyCorp","268435459705526269","","268435459705526269","848 Model Widget","2011-01-17" As you can see, the serial numbers are present (in this case twice, not all secondary serials are the same) and are long strings of numbers. When this file is opened in Excel, the result becomes: Account Number Store Name S1 S2 S3 Widget Type Date 4173 SpeedyCorp 2.68435E+17 2.68435E+17 848 Model Widget 2011-01-17 As you may have observed, the serial numbers are enclosed by double quotes. Excel does not seem to respect text qualifiers in .csv files. When importing these files into Access, we have zero difficulty. When opening them as text, no trouble at all. But Excel, without fail, converts these files into useless garbage. Trying to instruct end users in the art of opening a CSV file with a non-default application is becoming, shall we say, tiresome. Is there hope? Is there a setting I've been unable to find? This seems to be the case with Excel 2003, 2007, and 2010.

• 85 Hz on old/new driver looks the same like 75 Hz on previous one?

  I have old philips 107T5 CRT and Nvidia graphics card. I used old Nvidia driver (but it wasn't 'legacy' one when I installed it) for few years but recently I decided to install other Linux distribution. I used 75 Hz refresh rate and 1024x768 resolution on my previous distribution. After I installed the new distribution I had to install a Nvidia driver so I downloaded one from the Nvidia site (this time only legacy supported my card so I downloaded legacy and installed it). It wasn't automatically updating xorg.conf but I had my previous xorg.conf copy and I used it. When I run X I could only choose 85 and 75 Hz, 85 was checked as default. And now what shocks me: that default 85 Hz looks identically like 75 Hz on previous driver looked (at least to me). I tried 75 Hz out of curiosity and it's too bright, hurts, etc. But on the previous driver 75 Hz wasn't hurting my eyes. Why is it different? It's the same number after all, so it should always give the same results, right? That's my first question. Second question: Is 85 Hz OK for that monitor model? Would it break it? I tried to find the optimal refresh rate for this model but couldn't find it.

• Can a OS be copied from one hard drive to another and still boot?

  Background My computer gets stuck on the make and model screen after the BIOS screen, aka the Toshiba screen. After some research I've realized that the problem is the hard drive. I'm using an old 250gb model that USED to be used for backup purposes, however I loaded windows 7 ultimate onto it This hard drive has trouble getting up to full RPM therefore cannot boot correctly until its warmed up. meaning that my pc needs to be restarted several times before it boots (once it took my 13 reboots to get my pc on!) From my research its either that, or lack of power supply, and I've tried multiple PSUs. Question I have my OS and all my files on this 250gb HDD... If I were to literally open the explorer, and copy EVERYTHING (including hidden files obviously) from this 250gb, to a spare 500gb I've got knocking about... Will it boot if I just copy everything? I cannot be bothered to load another OS onto my PC so if there is a way I can just copy the existing one over from one HDD to another and have it boot normally. This would be epic! I've heard about HDD cloning software. But before I purchase and/or download this software, I need to know if i can just copy the OS over through the windows explorer

• Second CPU missing of Dual Core

  My Lenovo T61 has a dual core CPU. I just noticed that under Ubuntu 10.10 only one CPU is recognized. I know that once both CPUs worked. Not sure since when the second CPU is missing. Maybe since the last kernel update. Currently I am using linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic (for x86_64). What can I do to enable the second CPU again?   we have a couple of servers with PAM+LDAP. The configuration is standard (see http://arthurdejong.org/nss-pam-ldapd/setup or http://wiki.debian.org/LDAP/PAM). For example, /etc/pam.d/common-auth contains: auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok_secure auth requisite pam_succeed_if.so uid >= 1000 quiet auth sufficient pam_ldap.so use_first_pass auth requiered pam_deny.so And, of course, it works for both ldap and local users. But every login goes first to pam_unix.so, fails, and only then tries pam_ldap.so successfully. As a result, we have a well-known failure message for every single ldap user login: pam_unix(<some_service>:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=<some_host> user=<some_user> I have up to 60000 of such log messages per day and I want to change the configuration so, that PAM will try ldap authentication first, and only if it fails - try pam_unix.so (I think it can improve the i/o performance of the server). But if I change common-auth to the following: auth sufficient pam_ldap.so use_first_pass auth sufficient pam_unix.so nullok_secure auth requiered pam_deny.so Then I simply can't login anymore with local (non-ldap) user (e.g., via ssh). Does somebody knows the right configuration? Why Debian and nss-pam-ldapd have pam_unix.so at first by default? Is there really no way to change it? Thank you in advance. P.S. I don't want to disable logs, but want to set ldap authentication on the first place.

• Apache downloads php files instead of running their source

  I have just recently upgraded PHP 5.3 to 5.4 on my Debian Squeeze server. Now, instead of executing PHP files, Apache just downloads them, which is really bad. When I try to follow these steps, I get "broken packages" upon installing the libapache2-mod-php5 package. Also the answer tells me to add something to my httpd.conf, but it's empty. • Is there any any merit to routinely restore a linux system, even if unnecessary?

  I do fieldwork with a number of computers running ubuntu performing critical tasks doing fieldwork. The computers are similarly configured with slight variations. Since we've had some configuration issues in the past, my boss is pressing for us to take an image of the installation on each computer, and restore each computer to that image before they are to go into the field. My preferred solution would be to write a common script that checks to ensure that the configuration of the system is correct and that the system is operational. If the computer has been verified, isn't restoring it to that configuration redundant? And are there any inherent problems with doing so? My reluctance stems from the fact that our software and configuration is subject to change in the field, but these changes must be made across all the computers. That means that when a change is made, all the restoration images have to be updated as well. The differences in the configuration of each of the computers live in /etc. In the event that restoration is required, I would prefer to keep a single image containing everything that is common to all machines, and have a snapshot of each computer's /etc directory to be used for restoring the state of that particular machine. What's the better approach?

• A class meant for an alfresco behavior and its bean, how do they work and how are they deployed trough eclipse

  (This is a partial repost of a question asked 10 days ago because only 1 part was answered(not included), I've rewritten it into a way better question and added 3 more tags) where do I put the DeleteAsset.class or why isn't it being found? I've put the compiled class from the bin of the workspace of eclipse into alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/webapps/alfresco/WEB-INF/classes/com/openerp/behavior/ and right now it's giving me Error loading class [com.openerp.behavior.DeleteAsset] for bean with name 'deletionBehavior' defined in URL [file:/home/openerp/alfresco-4.2.c/tomcat/shared/classes/alfresco/extension/cust??om-web-context.xml]: problem with class file or dependent class; nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/openerp/behavior/DeleteAsset (wrong name: DeleteAsset) when I put it in there. • Bulk inserting best way to about it? + Helping me understand fully what I found so far

BulkInsert and BulkCopy. the second one uses linq to sql and OpenXML. This sort of appeals to me as I am using linq to sql already and prefer it over ado.net. However as one person pointed out in the posts what he just going around the issue at the cost of performance( nothing wrong with that in my opinion) First I will talk about the 2 ways in the first tutorial I am using VS2010 Express, .net 4.0, MVC 2.0, SQl Server 2005 Is ado.net 2.0 the most current version? Based on the technology I am using, is there some updates to what I am going to show that would improve it somehow? Is there any thing that these tutorial left out that I should know about? Why would you set a batch size to anything but the number of records you are sending? Like I am sending 500,000 records so I did a Batch size of 500,000. Next why does it crash when I do this? If you can would it be better?) BatchCopy had no problem with a 500,000 batch size.So again why make it smaller then the number of records you want to send? I found that with BatchCopy and 500,000 batch size it took only 5 seconds to complete. I then tried with a batch size of 1,000 and it only took 8 seconds. So much faster then the bulkinsert one above. Now I tried the other tutorial. I don't get how the SP works. Like I don't get the whole thing. I don't know if OPENXML has some batch insert under the hood but I do not even know how to take this example SP and change it to fit my tables since like I said I don't know what is going on. I also don't know what would happen if the object you have more tables in it. Like say I have a ProductName table what has a relationship to a Product table or something like that. In linq to sql you could get the product name object and make changes to the Product table in that same object. So I am not sure how to take that into account. I am not sure if I would have to do separate inserts or what. So I really narrowed it done to the linq to sql bulk insert way or bulk copy. I am just not sure how to do it when you have relationship for either way. I am not sure how they both stand up when doing updates instead of inserts as I have not gotten around to try it yet. I don't think I will ever need to insert/update more than 50,000 records at one type but at the same time I know I will have to do validation on records before inserting so that will slow it down and that sort of makes linq to sql nicer as your got objects especially if your first parsing data from a xml file before you insert into the database.
