• Jumbo Frames on DIR-655

  I am trying to set up jumbo frames on my gigabit home LAN but no luck so far. My setup is: D-Link DIR-655 router, HW Revision A3, Firmware 1.21 EU Synology DS107+, Firmware 3.0-1337 Laptop w/ Win7 x64, external PCIx NIC managed by "Generic Marvel Yukon 88E8053 based Ethernet Controller" The router is supposed to support jumbo frames but doesn't feature any relevant setting. I set the Jumbo Packet value to 9000 on both the NIC and the Synobox but it doesn't work, ping -f -l 8972 says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set". Is there any other setting I overlooked, the DIR-655 doesn't actually support jumbo frames, or what else could be the problem?

• Any good resources on setting up an ubuntu virtual machine for web development?

  I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and VB.Net: I have a working web app that uses an ASMX web service which is compiled into its separate assembly. I have another class library project compiled as a separate assembly that serves as a proxy to this web service. This all seems to work at runtime but I am getting this warning at compile time which I don't understand and would like to fix: Type of member 'wsZipeee' is not CLS-compliant I have dozens of webforms in the main project that reference the proxy class with no compile time complaints as this snippet shows: Imports System.Data Partial Class frmZipeee Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Public wsZipeee As New ProxyZipeeeService.WSZipeee.Zipeee Dim dsStandardMsg As DataSet Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load And yet I have one webform (also in the root of the main project) which gives me the "not CLS-compliant" message but yet attempts to reference the proxy class just like the other ASPX files. • Async task ASP.net HttpContext.Current.Items is empty - How do handle this?

  We are running a very large web application in asp.net MVC .NET 4.0. Recently we had an audit done and the performance team says that there were a lot of null reference exceptions. So I started investigating it from the dumps and event viewer. My understanding was as follows: We are using Asyn Tasks in our controllers. We rely on HttpContext.Current.Items hashtable to store a lot of Application level values. Task<Articles>.Factory.StartNew(() => { System.Web.HttpContext.Current = ControllerContext.HttpContext.ApplicationInstance.Context; var service = new ArticlesService(page); return service.GetArticles(); }).ContinueWith(t => SetResult(t, "articles")); So we are copying the context object onto the new thread that is spawned from Task factory. This context.Items is used again in the thread wherever necessary. Say for ex: public class SomeClass { internal static int StreamID { get { if (HttpContext.Current != null) { return (int)HttpContext.Current.Items["StreamID"]; } else { return DEFAULT_STREAM_ID; } } } This runs fine as long as number of parallel requests are optimal. My questions are as follows: 1. When the load is more and there are too many parallel requests, I notice that HttpContext.Current.Items is empty. I am not able to figure out a reason for this and this causes all the null reference exceptions. 2. How do we make sure it is not null ? Any workaround if present ? NOTE: I read through in StackOverflow and people have questions like HttpContext.Current is null - but in my case it is not null and its empty. I was reading one more article where the author says that sometimes request object is terminated and it may cause problems since dispose is already called on objects. I am doing a copy of Context object - its just a shallow copy and not a deep copy.

• Windows server response time very high

  Server Specs Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit Provider : Fasthosts .Net Framework: 4.0 6 GB RAM (its using 4.6 GB) i have a website with thousands of pages structured like folderone/1/one to 500.aspx folderone/2/one to 500.aspx . . folderone/500/one to 500.aspx To load this pages for the first time after the release, for each folder it takes about 20 to 30 minutes and once one page is loaded the rest of the pages loads fine. This happens for all folders. And this repeats every time i restart the server, when a added anything to app_code or if i change the web.config. My site is mainly works Google and due to this problem its giving errors. Any help will be highly appreciated please. i am happy to buy a beer for you if its resolved. Thanks in advance...

• Postfix not delivering mails

  I have problems with a recently configured postfix MTA. When postfix starts the following warning appears: "postfix/qmgr[5078]: warning: connect to transport private/filter: No such file or directory" I have amavis-new as a content-filter, but even if I comment-out the relevant line, the warning appears. As a result (I think), of the above, I get errors like below, for every virtual domain that I have: "postfix/error[5080]: 254851834107: to=, relay=none, delay=13082, delays=13082/0.01/0/0.01, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (mail transport unavailable)" The good news for me, is that somehow I managed to fix that (don't ask me how!!!!) The problem is that now I have 50 or so mails, that were affected by the aforementioned problem, in the mail-queue... If I "postqueue -f " I get the same style of error as before (mail transport unavailable)...however new mails are delivered to their final destination properly... Any suggestions? Kind regards. P.S. Local mail delivery from/to Unix and virtual users, was OK write from the beginning!

• Laptop crashes when connecting to external harddisk

  I recently had a problem with my laptop. when I booted up the machine, I would get a SMART failure error message and when I pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. Thinking that my hard disk was dying, I bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. However I need to recover data from that old hard disk, so I bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. The first few times when I connected, I could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. But now whenever I connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. Do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? Or you can offer some help here? Any assistance would be appreciated!

  Hello, we've run an Citrix Farm with 4 x Windows 2008 x64 (XenApp 5.0 FP3) and one server Win 2003 x86 (Xenapp 4.6). Yesterday we had a strange problem with Session logins. Existing Sessions could work without problems but new logins were not possible. In the AMC we could not see the Sessions on the Servers. After an reboot all worked fine again. We run the 32 Bit Server since 3 days in our farm (for one Application). Could it be possible that this behavior is caused of the mixed farm? -- (we got in this time a lot of wmi warnings that the Provider CitrixEvemtProv has been registered but it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

• Can a power loss break an hard disk?

  Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible... • How to read an xs:any response using CXF Generated Client?

  Hi, When consuming a webserice with CXF 2.1.4 (the generated client) I am having problem getting the response based on the following XSD snippet in the WSDL. CXF Generates a List representing it, but when I execute the service, the response comes null. I used wireshark to what I was reciving and indeed the response XMl is coming as expected, but CXF just give me null object. Below the XSD of the response object. • Wireless WAN (WWAN) on a Lenovo T500 - built-in or do I need a WWAN modem?

  I use a Lenovo ThinkPad 2055-3AU at work and I want to get a Wireless WAN data plan with a local mobile telecom provider. I've read conflicting reports online about whether my system is "WWAN-ready" or not. How can I find out which wireless WAN providers (if any) my system can support without buying a separate modem? I looked through Device Manager for anything resembling a WWAN device and didn't see anything, but I also wiped the machine when I bought it and clean-installed Windows 7 with only out-of-the-box Windows and Windows-Update drivers, so it's possible that the device is there but the drivers aren't installed. FWIW, the support page at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/quickPath.do?quickPathEntry=20553AU does not specfically list anything about Wireless WAN.

• Android: How to periodically send location to a server

  Hi, I am running a Web service that allows users to record their trips (kind of like Google's MyTracks) as part of a larger app. The thing is that it is easy to pass data, including coords and other items, to the server when a user starts a trip or ends it. Being a newbie, I am not sure how to set up a background service that sends the location updates once every (pre-determined) period (min 3 minutes, max 1 hr) until the user flags the end of the trip, or until a preset amount of time elapses. Once the trip is started from the phone, the server responds with a polling period for the phone to use as the interval between updates. This part works, in that I can display the response on the phone, and my server registers the user's action. Similarly, the trip is closed server-side upon the close trip request. However, when I tried starting a periodic tracking method from inside the StartTrack Activity, using requestLocationUpdates(String provider, long minTime, float minDistance, LocationListener listener) where minTime is the poll period from the server, it just did not work, and I'm not getting any errors. So it means I'm clueless at this point, never having used Android before. I have seen many posts here on using background services with handlers, pending intents, and other things to do similar stuff, but I really don't understand how to do it. I would like the user to do other stuff on the phone while the updates are going on, so if you guys could point me to a tutorial that shows how to actually write background services (maybe these run as separate classes?) or other ways of doing this, that would be great. • How to get a debug flow of execution in C++

  Hi, I work on a global trading system which supports many users. Each user can book,amend,edit,delete trades. The system is regulated by a central deal capture service. The deal capture service informs all the user of any updates that occur. The problem comes when we have crashes, as the production environment is impossible to re-create on a test system, I have to rely on crash dumps and log files. However this doesn't tell me what the user has been doing. I'd like a system that would (at the time of crashing) dump out a history of what the user has been doing. Anything that I add has to go into the live environment so it can't impact performance too much. Ideas wise I was thinking of a MACRO at the top of each function which acted like a stack trace (only I could supply additional user information, like trade id's, user dialog choices, etc ..) The system would record stack traces (on a per thread basis) and keep a history in a cyclic buffer (varying in size, depending on how much history you wanted to capture). Then on crash, I could dump this history stack. I'd really like to hear if anyone has a better solution, or if anyone knows of an existing framework? Thanks Rich

• Update Web Reference in Visual Studio

  Hi, I have inherited a web site project that makes use of a number of WCF Web Services hosted on a BizTalk server. We have two environments that I need to deploy this project to, with different URLs for the different BizTalk servers. i.e. In the Staging environment, I need to point the services at xx.xx.xx.101 In the Live environment, I need to point them at xx.xx.xx.102, or whatever. Currently, we've got all of the URLs stored in keys in the web.config file, so that we can change them dynamically... Unfortunately this isn't working! If I change the URL in the web.config to something other than what the project was compiled with, I get an error when calling the service: Server did not recognize the value of HTTP Header SOAPAction: xx.xx.xx.101\ServiceName\MethodName I'm told that the only way they've known to deploy this is to update the web.config URLs, change all of the web references in Visual Studio to match, click on "update web reference" for each reference in Visual Studio, and then compile. It's driving me mad! I've written a pre-build NAnt script to go through and replace all instances of the URL found anywhere in the project directory, and even that isn't making any difference. There must be something else being pulled down from the service when I click the "update reference", but I'm new to working with web services, and so I'm not sure what. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to do this programatically? Thanks.

• Can you set up a Linode VPS as a reseller type scenario?

  First, I'm a fairly green on this subject. So, go easy. I do web design and development and would like to set up a way to be the central host so to speak for my clients. Currently they are scattered across multiple hosting companies. I've looked at some the cheapy options like a LunarPages and some of the more robust options like RackSpace Cloud and Linode. RackSpace has a reseller program, but it's managed and more at the top end on cost. I'm not seeing any type of reseller program in place for Linode. Can I purchase a higher Linode plan and use Apache2's VirtualHost configuration to handle multiple domains (about 8 domains, but hopefully will grow.). Or, am I not thinking about this correctly?

• TCP 30 small packets per second flood connection with server

  I'm testing connection with flash client and cloud server(boost::asio for software) over TCP connection. My connection with server already is really poor - 120 ms ping in average. I found when i start to send packets with 2 bytes size (without tcp header) with speed 30 packets/s - ping grow to 170-200 average. I think that it's really bad and my bad connection and bad cloud provider is reason for this high ping without any load. What do you think? (I tested my software - it can compute about 50k small packets/s so software is not a problem). I measure my ping through flash client - send packet with timestamp and immediatly send from server to client.

• Domain controller in cloud, how do we set up local BDC

  We have a domain controller (exchange box) hosted at our hosting provider. We need to set up a local domain controller so we do a VPN and local authentication tasks. I can make the PDC accept all connections from our Office IP. How do I get the office router to correctly allow two way communications between the PDC (cloud) and the local DC. • How do I install the vi text editor ONLY on my Cygwin installation?

  I have managed to install the Cygwin on my Windows Vista machine. I installed using the default settings. When I try to do vi in the Bash shell, Bash tells me command not found. I believe I need to install the Cygwin editors package which include the vi editor. The nightmare is every time I run the Cygwin setup and select ONLY the editors package and specifically the Vim and select install, Cygwin setup tries to install all other packages, very frustrating!! Is there an easier way of installing just a single package using the Cygwin setup utility?

  We have multiple Microsoft Exchange 2007 nodes and 2 Exchange hubs. One of our users unfortunately had their account compromised, which then sent out several thousand emails before we were able to stop them. During this time, however, several primary mail providers blocked one of our Exchange hubs as a spam source. We now have nearly 500 messages built up on the one hub server waiting to go out to a provider who is currently blocking that hub. I know it is possible to change the location of the mailqueue and I could copy the queue database over from one hub to another and than change the location the HUB is looking at to a different file - let the mail spool out and then change the location back, but I would like a cleaner solution. Therefore, the question: is there a way to quickly and easily move messages from one Exchange hub server to another Exchange hub server?

• How might a C# programmer approach writing a solution in javascript?

  UPDATE: Perhaps this wasn't clear from my original post, but I'm mainly interested in knowing a best practice for how to structure javascript code while building a solution, not simply learning how to use APIs (though that is certainly important). I need to add functionality to a web site and our team has decided to approach the solution using a web service that receives a call from a JSON-formatted AJAX request from within the web site. The web service has been created and works great. Now I have been tasked with writing the javascript/html side of the solution. If I were solving this problem in C#, I would create separate classes for formatting the request, handling the AJAX request/response, parsing the response, and finally inserting the response somehow into the DOM. I would build properties and methods appropriately into each class, doing my best to separate functionality and structure where appropriate. However, I have to solve this problem in javascript. Firstly, how could I approach my solution in javascript in the way I would approach it from C# as described above? Or more importantly, what's a better way to approach structuring code in javascript? Any advice or links to helpful material on the web would be greatly appreciated. NOTE: Though perhaps not immediately relevant to this question, it may be worth noting that we will be using jQuery in our solution.

• Syncing Data to Remote Services, Best Practices for Caching?

  I want to be able to publish events to Eventbrite, Eventful, and Google Calendar for my Google Apps. Each service has slightly different properties for events... I will be syncing many other things too, such as users with Google Contacts and MailChimp, Documents with Google Docs and some other services, etc... So I'm wondering, what is the recommended way of retrieving the data for the end user so that it's reasonably maintainable and optimized? Here are the things I'm thinking that I'm having trouble with: My App keeps a central database of all the models (Event, Document, User, Form, etc.), and whenever Admin creates an object (e.g. create through Eventbrite or through our Admin panel), we sync them and store a copy in our local database. When User goes to the site /events, App retrieves the events from the database. Read Events from a target feed, such as the Eventbrite or Eventful feed, and scrap the local database. Basically, I'm wondering, if we're storing all of the data on a remote service, do we really need to have a local database copy of the data?
