• Site too large to officially use Google Analytics?

  We just got this email from the Google Analytics team: We love that you love our product and use it as much as you do. We have observed however, that a website you are tracking with Google Analytics is sending over 1 million hits per day to Google Analytics servers. This is well above the "5 million pageviews per month per account" limit specified in the Google Analytics Terms of Service. Processing this amount of data multiple times a day takes up valuable resources that enable us to continue to develop the product for all Google Analytics users. As such, starting August 23rd, 2010, the metrics in your reports will be updated once a day, as opposed to multiple times during the course of the day. You will continue to receive all the reports and features in Google Analytics as usual. The only change will be that data for a given day will appear the following day. We trust you understand the reasons for this change. I totally respect this decision, and I think it's very generous to not kick us out. But how do we do this the right way -- what's the official, blessed Google way to use Google Analytics if you're a "whale" website with lots of hits per day? Or, are there other analytics services that would be more appropriate for very large websites?

• Rsyslog mail module not working

  Hi *, I would like to email snort alerts from my Debian Lenny fw. Syslog is sending log messages from the firewalls to a central rsyslog. • SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise database has unexpected 4GB database size limit

  I have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed on a local Windows 7 x64 workstation. When I create a database on the server, it unexpectedly has a 4GB size limit (Database properties in SQL Server Management Studio say size = 3934.38 MB, space available = 47.13 MB). Unfortunately the database needs more than 4GB, and Enterprise is not supposed to have a practical maximum size. I confirmed the database is on the Enterprise server: SELECT @@VERSIONMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) The database file is not set to restrict growth in SQL Server Management Studio, and there is plenty of hard drive space. The database was copied from SQL Express (which has a 4GB limit), but the same occurs with a fresh database creation. I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and Google-searching, to no avail. Any ideas?

• Apache error "No address associated with hostname" on Arch Linux (ZMLarch)

  I'm trying to set up video surveillance system using IP cameras and ZoneAlarm on Arch Linux. I set up fixed IP address, I've managed to get streams from cameras, etc. However, after restart of the machine, I cannot start Apache again. I checked configuration of rc.conf, and saw that static IP configuration has been deleted, and also secondary nameserver in resolv.conf. Tried to re-write these with correct parameters, but now with no effect. This is tail of my /var/log/httpd/error_log file, after /etc/rc.d/httpd restart attempt [Fri Jan 29 04:20:45 2010] [alert] (EAI 5) No address associated with hostname: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "zmhost" Configuration failed Anybody have an idea on how could I fix this?

  We are using physical disk on two of Guest operating systems. Is this a know issue? Do we need to have DPM 2010? "One or more physical disks are attached to virtual machine 'Myserver'. Back up programs that use the Hyper-V VSS writer cannot back up volumes that are attached to virtual machines as physical disks. To avoid potential data loss, use another method to back up the data on the physical disks. • Worldwide Web Camps

  Over the next few weeks Microsoft is sponsoring a number of free Web Camp events around the world.  These provide a great way to learn about ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and Visual Studio 2010. The Web Camps are two day events.  The camps aren’t conferences where you sit quietly for hours and people talk at you – they are intended to be interactive.  The first day is focused on learning through presentations that are heavy on coding demos.  The second day is focused on you building real applications using what you’ve learned.  The second day includes hands-on labs, and you’ll join small development teams with other attendees and work on a project together. We’ve got some great speakers lined up for the events – including Scott Hanselman, James Senior, Jon Galloway, Rachel Appel, Dan Wahlin, Christian Wenz and more.  I’ll also be presenting at one of the camps. • InvalidProgramException Running Unit Test (Bug Closed)

  In a previous post I reported an InvalidProgramException that occurs in a certain circumstance with unit tests involving accessors on a private generic method.  It turns out that Bug #635093 reported through Microsoft Connect will not be fixed. The reason cited is that private accessors have been discontinued.  And why have private accessors been discontinued?  They don't have time is the reason listed in the blog post titled "Generation of Private Accessors (Publicize) and Code Generation for Visual Studio 2010". In my opinion, it's a piss poor decision to discontinue support for a feature that they're still using within automatically generated unit tests against private classes and methods.  But, I think what is worse is the lack of guidance cited in the aforementioned blog post.  Their advice?  Use the PrivateObject to help, but develop your own framework. At the end of the day what Microsoft is saying is, "I know you spent a lot of money for this product.  I know that you don't have time to develop a framework to deal with this.  We don't have time and that is all that's important."

All it takes is a moo server and learning moocode.   If you have other browsers that you use set to “about:blank” for new tabs then you probably feel rather frustrated with Google Chrome’s default New Tab Page. The Blank New Tab extension is the perfect solution to that problem. Before Unless you have a “speed dial/special page” extension installed you are stuck with the default new tab page in Chrome every single time you open a new tab. What if you do not like the default new tab page or “speed dial/special page” setups? After If you are someone who prefers to have a blank page as a new tab then you will love this extension. Once you have it installed you can click to your heart’s content on the “New Tab Button” and see nothing but blank goodness. Sometimes less is more… Note: There are no options to bother with. Conclusion If you prefer a blank page when opening a new tab then the Blank New Tab extension is just what you have been waiting for. • Sending cron output to a file with a timestamp in its name

  I have a crontab like this on a LAMP setup: 0 0 * * * /some/path/to/a/file.php > $HOME/cron.log 2>&1 This writes the output of the file to cron.log. However, when it runs again, it overwrites whatever was previously in the file. How can I get cron to output to a file with a timestamp in its filename? An example filename would be something like this: 2010-02-26-000000-cron.log I don't really care about the format, as long as it has a timestamp of some kind. Thanks in advance.

  Why would ssh fail to expand %h from .ssh/config? This used to work and still works except on a RHEL box. Looking for what the origin of this could be. Is there a setting somewhere that tells ssh to not expand %h? • Can't connect to STunnel when it's running as a service

  I've got STunnel configured to proxy non SSL POP3 requests to GMail on port 111. This is working fine when STunnel is running as a desktop app, but when I run the STunnel service, I can't connect to port 111 on the machine (using Outlook Express for example). The Stunnel log file shows the port binding is succeeding, but it never sees a connection. There's something preventing the connection to that port when STunnel is running as a service?   Keeping your computer and software up to date is very important in keeping everything running smooth and secure. It’s also important to keep your geeky gadgets updated as well. Here we take a look at updating a Zune HD. Note: In this example we’re updating a Zune HD out of the box which hasn’t been updated yet. The first thing you’ll need to do if you haven’t already is download and install the latest Zune software (link below). Now plug your Zune into your computer with the included USB connection cable and give it a moment to be recognized. Next launch the Zune Desktop software and you should get the following screen. Just accept the EULA… Then the update kicks off. Make sure not to disconnect the Zune while the update takes place. The update will take a few minutes, and after it’s complete you should be good to go and can start using your Zune. To update your player in the future, go to General Settings then Player Update. Just like your computer’s hardware and software, you want to keep your other geeky gadgets updated as well. This will help the device run more smoothly, and sometimes add additional functionality.
