• Does all SPWeb or SPSite instances get automatically disposed when console app process has ended?

  We have Best practices on using disposable object in SharePoint. But i`m thinking - can I skip these when using Console Application? That's some code I want to execute once and after that process has finished. Do or don't SPSite and SPWeb's remain opened somwhere? Why i`m asking this? I just don't want to stress when using something like var lists = from web in site.AllWebs.Cast<SPWeb>() where web is meeting workspace && list is task list select list then do some stuff on lists etc. Some serious resource leak there because webs get opened, filtered and NOT closed. So should I worry in console app?

• Handling log-in / log-out via Objective-c

  Having a real problem with this one...Tried using cookies to store variables, etc. but no luck. Writing an iPhone app where the User has to log in. There is an HTTPS call to get the person's userid, which is used practically everywhere else in the app, so that either has to be stored in a global variable or a cookie (for sending messages to other users, etc.) I tried the cookie route, but am having great difficulty storing (and retriving) a user ID in a cookie. The User should be able to then close out of the app and then reboot it and have the app retain their User ID as well, so I'm not sure global variables are necessarily the solution to this. Are there any best practices or suggestions?

• Php PEAR, Database Abstraction & Factory Methods

  I'm interested in learning more about design practices in PHP for Database Abstraction & Factory methods. For background, my site is a special-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. However, I do feel like I'm limiting myself by keeping a lot of SQL table names and structure separated in each function/method. Questions: 1.) Is there a reason to use PEAR (or similar) if I dont anticipate switching databases? 2.) Can PEAR interface with the MySqli prepared statements I currently use? 3.) Will it help me separate table names from each method? (If no, what other design patterns might I want to research?) 4.) Will it slow down my site once I have a significantly large member base?

• where to store helper functions?

  i've got a lot of functions i create or copy from the web. i wonder if i should store them in a file that i just include into the script or should i store each function as a static method in a class. eg. i've got a getCurrentFolder() and a isFilePhp() function. should they be stored in a file as they are or each in a class: Folder::getCurrent() File::isPhp(); how do you do? i know this is kinda a "as u want" question but it would be great with some advices/best practices thanks.

  There are three assembly version attributes. What are differences? Is it ok if I use AssemblyVersion and ignore the rest? MSDN says: AssemblyVersion: Specifies the version of the assembly being attributed. AssemblyFileVersion: Instructs a compiler to use a specific version number for the Win32 file version resource. The Win32 file version is not required to be the same as the assembly's version number. AssemblyInformationalVersion: Defines additional version information for an assembly manifest. The question is: which libraries/frameworks do you use in your current ZF-based project? what are the best practices for ZF-based project architecture? I don't mean any components that are already a part of ZF. Please give a description of aditional frameworks you have integrated (like RuckUsing, Smarty, or Doctrine).   I am trying to build an Iphone App client for our CRM solution so our sales people would be able to access the information available in our CRM through an Iphone App. I am trying to find out what is the recommended approach to architect the application when it comes to the database. I am not sure where should the data reside, should I save a subset of the data on the iPhone, or should I just rely on webservices and pull the information I need from the database whenever I need it. • Are there cross-platform tools to write XSS attacks directly to the database?

  I've recently found this blog entry on a tool that writes XSS attacks directly to the database. It looks like a terribly good way to scan an application for weaknesses in my applications. I've tried to run it on Mono, since my development platform is Linux. Unfortunately it crashes with a System.ArgumentNullException deep inside Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary and I seem to be unable to find sufficient information about the software (it seems to be a single-shot project, with no homepage and no further development). Is anyone aware of a similar tool? Preferably it should be: cross-platform (Java, Python, .NET/Mono, even cross-platform C is ok) open source (I really like being able to audit my security tools) able to talk to a wide range of DB products (the big ones are most important: MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, ...)

• How to make sure web services are kept stable from one release to the next?

  The company where I work is a software vendor with a suite of applications. There are also a number of web services, and of course they have to be kept stable even if the applications change. We haven't always succeeded with this, and sometimes a customer finds that a service is not behaving as before after upgrading. We now want to handle this better. In general, web services shouldn't change, and if they have to, at least we will know about it and document the change. But how do we ensure this? One idea is to compare the WSDL files with the previous versions at every release. That will make sure the interfaces don't change, but it won't detect that the behavior changes, for example if a bug is introduced in some common library. Another idea is to build up a suite of service tests, for example using soapUI. But then we'll never know if we have covered enough cases. What are some best practices regarding this?

• Do you use enums in your data applications and how?

  My practice shows that a general enterprise application has a lot of entities which's nature corresponds to an elementary enumeration. For example We may have an Order entity which may have such fields as "OrderType", "OrderStatus", "Currency", etc. referencing corresponding Entities which are nothing more than just a textual name bound to a key to be referenced. Using enums would look very natural here. But entities have to be defined in application code at design-time, am I right? While in we need to be able to CRUD enum value variants at runtime and use enums in server-side SQL queries (like stored procedures and views). What are you practices and thoughts on this subject? I am particularly interested in C#4, linq and T-SQL.

• Proper way to build a data Repository in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm working on using the Repository methodology in my App and I have a very fundamental question. When I build my Model, I have a Data.dbml file and then I'm putting my Repositories in the same folder with it.... IE: Data.dbml IUserRepository.cs UserRepository.cs My question is simple. Is it better to build the folder structure like that above, or is it ok to simply put my Interface in with the UserRepository.cs?   We receive lots of data as flat files: delimitted or just fixed length records. It's sometimes hard to find out what the files actually contain. Are there any well established practices for embedding the schema of the file to the beginning or the end of a file to make the file self-explanatory? Just to get an idea, imagine something like this: <data name=test records=2 type=fixed> <field name=foo start=0 length=2 type=numeric> <field name=bar start=2 length=4 type=text> </data> 11test 12ing We would parse the xml in the beginning and use it for reading the records.

• Caching issues with TDBadgedCell

• Use SQL to filter the results of a stored procedure

  I've looked at other questions on Stack Overflow related to this question, but none of them seemed to answer this question clearly. We have a system Stored Procedure called sp_who2 which returns a result set of information for all running processes on the server. I want to filter the data returned by the stored procedure; conceptually, I might do it like so: SELECT * FROM sp_who2 WHERE login='bmccormack' That method, though, doesn't work. What are good practices for achieving the goal of querying the returned data of a stored procedure, preferably without having to look of the code of the original stored procedure and modify it.

During the meeting, several positive suggestions were made and I added TODO comments in my code for following up. After reading suggestions on here on best practices for code reviews, I would like to follow up on all the items I corrected at the start of the next meeting. Is there a way to add a similar type of comment to the code such as FOLLOWUP so that I can quickly highlight through those code segments in the next meeting?

• dynamic silverlight content

  I am starting a silverlight project where I have tests for students to complete. I want to have some sort of framework so I can build the tests and store them in a database, delivering the content dynamically so I can continually develop new types of tests without having to re-deply the application. The content will have to be more than just xaml, as there may need to be some logic to determine if answers are correct, or to do some random generation of questions. I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about building a framework that supports this. Are there some best practices, or examples? Should each test type just be a seperate silverlight control, or should I use 1 silverlight "container" application that can display dynamic content?

• What should be the image resolution for Nexus One or Droid?

  Hi, As Android supports multiple devices from different manufacturers there are different screen resolutions supported. The table that is available at http://developer.android.com/intl/fr/guide/practices/screens_support.... is not very clear to me. It shows WVGA and FWVGA in MDPI for Large Screens and HDPI for Normal screens. So, if the image is kept in drawable-mdpi and its resolution is 320 * 480 then which image will be taken by Large Screens device of MDPI. Moreover, there are two screen resolutions for HDPI i.e. 480 * 800 and 480 * 854. So, with what screen resolution the image should be built. I want to place the background image which looks distorted in WVGA emulator since its resolution is 320 * 480. I have read about nine patchable images but I think they are better for button images and edittext images so that they can stretch according to the data in it. Can someone please guide me in this? • New to C# and trying to use a global variable

  Is it possible to use global variables in C#? I'm coming from mainly a PHP background so variables are either accessible everywhere or just a global definition away. My main issue is I have a User class that I built myself to wrap around the current users table on my company's database. I am defining it in the MasterPage but can't seem to access it from the actual pages (I don't know if there's a better word to describe them but they are the pages that inherit the styles and format from the MasterPage) Any general tips or implementation practices for me? Or will the iframe request get processed concurrently while rest of the document is downloaded and rendered?

• Silverlight data-driven application with NHibernate

  Hi Guys, this is more of a subjective Question, but I'll ask it anyway. I'm about to develop a very data-centric application that has to run inside the browser. The frontend will be Silverlight, backed by a Fluent NHibernate service that runs server side. The problem here is: Wherever I look for data-driven silverlight app I wind up finding Silverlight RIA services examples, but nothing on how to build this without some ADO.NET stuff involved. I have little to no knowledge in WCF so far, but from the limited research I did it seems like WCF is pretty much the only way to let the client talk to the server. Are there any tutorials/best practices on how to write a Silverlight MVVM app that provides CRUD for a non-EF database? Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks PS: I can't use .NET remoting. The backend has to run on IIS6 :(

• Favouriting things in a database - most efficient method of keeping track?

  I'm working on a forum-like webapp where I'd like to allow users to favourite an item so that they can keep track of it, and also so that others can see how many times an item's been favourited. The problem is, I'm unsure on the best practices for databases, which includes this situation. I have two ideas in my head on how to do this: Add an extra column to the user table and store things like so: "|2|5|73|" Add an extra table with at least two columns, one for referencing an item, the other for referencing a user. I feel uncomfortable about going for the second method as it involves an extra table, and potentially more queries would be required. Perhaps these beliefs aren't an issue, as I have little understanding of databases beyond simply working with table layouts and basic queries.

• When should I open and close a connection to SQL Server

  I have a simple static class with a few methods in it. Each of those methods open a SqlConnection, query the database and close the connection. This way, I am sure that I always close the connection to the database, but on the other hand, I don't like to always open and close connection. • Sharing user controls acrros multiple websites

  Hello, I am currently working on a project which involves three different websites with a lot of common functionality. At the moment the common functionality is placed in a different website full of user controls. The problem is sharing the user controls across the multiple websites. Looking around on SO and other websites, the only solution seems the be using virtual directories. As this is a workable solution (we us this at the moment) it doesn't seem as a "clean" solution. Which "best practices" exist on sharing common functionality (including the GUI/HTML) between different site? Is it (for example) possible to create a single Web Application project and deploy subdirectories (each with their own web.config) to different production environments?
