• Generate dynamic html

  Hi all, to export some data i want to be able to generate an html output. I have some constant content to output, like html headers and footers. My question is how to deal with that ? Do I have to embed some template (in a ressource file) and parse it to make it dynamic ? Do I store my static content in some constant (is there a 255 char limit?) and append them while generating the dynamic content ? Do you have some hints, useful links, or best practices to share? • Multi-lingual Applications

  I came accross this thread about multi-lingual applications. I really liked the second answer and I am trying to implement it. Can I ask if anyone has example codes of the search scripts and of a translator program or web service I could use. I use C# if that helps. The secion dealing with: MessageBox(Localize("Hello"), Localize("Title"), MB_OK); RegOpenKey(NoLocalize("\\SOFTWARE\\RegKey"), ...); I am trying to follow those ideas. • C# Threading vs single thread

  Is it always guaranteed that a multi-threaded application would run faster than a single threaded application? I have two threads that populates data from a data source but different entities (eg: database, from two different tables), seems like single threaded version of the application is running faster than the version with two threads. Why would the reason be? when i look at the performance monitor, both cpu s are very spikey ? is this due to context switching? what are the best practices to jack the CPU and fully utilize it? I hope this is not ambiguous.

• What is the point in using a "real" database modeling tool?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app). Some have suggested we use Visio to do all the diagramming and to generate the DDL, but others have suggested we use a dedicated database design tool, rather than a diagramming tool that is able to export DDL. Is there any benefit to using "real" DB design tools, such as ModelRight, over general tools like Visio? If so, what are those specific benefits? Edit: In a nutshell, what can real/dedicated tools do that something like Visio can't, and how much do these capabilities matter (from a best-practices standpoint, for example)

  I've noticed that as I progress in my career I my day to day activities require less and less actual hands on development. However, I feel that I need to stay current, both for my own personal desire as well as being able to guide a team to best practices etc. I'm finding it very hard to stay on top of the game because there are so many new frameworks, technologies and patterns coming out. Do I concentrate on a particular aspect or framework? Do I become a generalist or a specialist? What are others doing to maintain a certain level of proficiency and currentness (sic)?

  I'm interested in using the Module Pattern to better organize my future projects. Unfortunately, there are only a few brief tutorials and proof-of-concept examples of the Module Pattern. Using the module pattern, I would like to organize projects into this sort of structure: project.arm.object.method(); Where "project" is my global project name, "arm" is a sub-section or branch of the project, "object" is an individual object, and so on to the methods and properties. • Fixed header and footers gotchas and suggestion

  I am planning to revamp my blog layout and this time I plan to have position: fixed headers and footers, both will be ~40px tall. The header will contain the logo and search buttons, the footer is going to contain lots of items such as subscribe buttons, related posts, jump to top/comments/bottom buttons and so on (list is not finalized). Before I jump into this I am wondering if someone can tell me if its a good idea or not. And I'd also appreciate if you can point out best-practices and gotchas. The footer will contain facebook chat style popup for related posts and some other features so I am also wondering if its going to work with this layout. There will be ads too so this leaves me worrying if its possible to have a the header laying on top of ads (specially flash ads). Links to sample layouts will be appreciated.

• ODBC Connection Pooling

  I have inherited a suite of .Net c# applications from a developer which talk to an Informix database on a unix server. Instead of using the usual practices for managing the database connections (disposable pattern / "open late / close early"), the code seems to open one ODBC connection when each app loads and doesn't close it. Connection pooling is turned via the ODBC administrator. Is there any way of seeing how many ODBC connections are open? What is the effect of turning off connection pooling? Am I right in thinking the .NET framework will use connection pooling anyway?

• How to use less memory while running a task in Symfony 1.4?

  I'm using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. So far I had no problem running tasks with Symfony. But now that I have to import a pretty big amount of data and save them in the database, I get the infamous "Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of XXXX bytes exhausted" During this import I'm only creating new objects, setting a few fields and saving them. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the number of objects I'm creating when saving data. Unsetting those objects doesn't do anything though. Are there any best practices to limit memory usage in Symfony?

Unfortunately I didn't find a way to store the static resources in a location outside of the webapplication which has his own advantages ( smaller WAR sizes, better optimize cookieless server, static resources served faster by a highly optimized native httpd, no need to redeploy WAR when updating static resources..). So my question is: is it possible to use this great plugin with static resoures stored outside the web application? And if yes, how?

• Is it possible to temporarily disable Python's string interpolation?

  I have a python logger set up, using python's logging module. I want to store the string I'm using with the logging Formatter object in a configuration file using the ConfigParser module. The format string is stored in a dictionary of settings in a separate file that handles the reading and writing of the config file. The problem I have is that python still tries to format the file and falls over when it reads all the logging-module-specific formatting flags. { "log_level":logging.debug, "log_name":"C:\\Temp\\logfile.log", "format_string": "%(asctime)s %(levelname)s: %(module)s, line %(lineno)d - %(message)s" } My question is simple: how can I disable the formatting functionality here while keeping it elsewhere. My initial reaction was copious use of the backslash to escape the various percent symbols, but that of course permanently breaks the formatting such that it wont work even when I need it to. Also, general pointers on good settings-file practices would be nice. This is the first time I've done anything significant with ConfigParser (or logging for that matter). Thanks in advance, Dominic

• Is there a standard practice for synchronizing SQL Server tables?

  I've written an application that retrieves pricing and part options from a SQL database to generate a 3D Model of the product and create a sales proposal. My client likes it so much they want to be able to use it on laptops in the field now. The catch is, they won't have an internet connection. I'm considering setting up a SQLite database as part of the standard installation. The SQLite database on each laptop will synchronize with the main database when the internet connection is re-established. Are there best practices regarding synchronizing SQL tables like this? Are there any pitfalls I should consider? I'm open to all options. Thank you.

  I am a reasonably experienced developer (.NET, c#, asp.NET etc) but I'd like to hone my problem solving skills. I find that when I come up against a complex problem I sometimes implement a solution that I feel could have been better had I analyzed the problem in a different way. Ideally what I am looking for is a resource of some type that has 'practice problems and solutions' as I think my skills will only get better by practicing this more and adopting better practices. • Storing Templates and Object-Oriented vs Relational Databases

  I'm designing some custom blog software, and have run into a conundrum regarding database design. The software requires that there be multiple content types, each of which will require different entry forms and presentation templates. My initial instinct is to create these content types as objects, then serialize them and store them in the database as JSON or YAML, with the entry forms and templates as simple strings attached to the "contentTypes" table. This seems cumbersome, however. Are there established best practices for dealing with this design? Is this a use case where I should consider an object database? If I should be using an object database, which should I consider? I am currently working in Python and would prefer a capable Python library, but can move to Java if need be.

It would be helpful if the book covered: The software development process (requirements, design, coding, testing, maintenance) Testing roles (who performs each step in the process) Testing methods (white box and black box) Testing levels (unit testing, integration testing, etc) Testing process (Agile, waterfall, spiral) Testing tools (simulators, fixtures, and reporting software) Testing of embedded systems The goal here is to find an easy to read book that summarizes the best practices for ensuring software quality in an embedded system. It seems most texts cover the testing of application software where it is simpler to generate automated test cases or run a debugger. A book that provided solutions for improving quality in a system where the tests must be performed manually and therefore minimized would be ideal.

• Android - Having a service run every day at 4AM

  Hello everyone, I would like to know the best practices for running a Service every day at 4AM. The way I think I should be doing it is to create a new repeating alarm using AlarmManager and having it run the service at 4AM. Problem is, I'm not sure where to put the code to set the alarm. Do I do it in my main activity as one of the first tasks in the OnCreate method? Do I do some funky stuff with BroadcastReceivers and intents? What happens when a user updates my app? Do you use one virtual_env for several projects? What do you use Fabric for (which part of your deployment do you script)? Do you put your Fabric scripts in on the client or the server? Now I want to get a couple of other numbers which are not x or y, but are also between 0 and 49 (I am using Objective C but this is more of a general theory question I think?). • When to use a module, and when to use a class

  I am currently working through the Gregory Brown Ruby Best Practices book. Early on, he is talking about refactoring some functionality from helper methods on a related class, to some methods on module, then had the module extend self. Hadn't seen that before, after a quick google, found out that extend self on a module lets methods defined on the module see each other, which makes sense. Now, my question is when would you do something like this module StyleParser extend self def process(text) ... end def style_tag?(text) ... end end and then refer to it in tests with @parser = Prawn::Document::Text::StyleParser as opposed to just using a class with some class methods on it? is it so that you can use it as a mixin? or are there other reasons I'm not seeing?

• How do I maintain coherency between model and view-model in MVVM pattern?

  Problem Statement I'm writing a very basic WPF application to alter the contents of a configuration file. The data format is an XML file with a schema. I want to use it as a learning project for MVVM, so I have duly divided the code into Model: C# classes auto-generated from xsd.exe View-Model: View-friendly representation of the Model. View: Xaml and empty code behind I understand how the View-Model can make View-binding a breeze. However, doesn't that leave the View-Model <- Model semantics very awkward? Xsd.exe generates C# classes with arrays for multiple XML elements. However, at the V-VM level you need Observable Collections. Questions: Does this really mean I have to keep two completely different collection types representing the same data in coherence? What are the best practices for maintaining coherence between the Model and the View-Model?
