• CentOS will not boot. Error 13

  I am having trouble with one of our CentOS servers. I migrated this server to XenServer, installed a new xen kernel, and performed a mkinitrd with: mkinitrd --omit-scsi-modules --with=xennet --with=xenblk --preload=xenblk initrd-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5xen-no-scsi.img 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5xen Now I am getting an error 13 on boot. What ever may be the reason, here are the tips to disable images in Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers. Google Chrome – Disable Loading Images To disable loading of images in Google Chrome 1. Click on Tools Icon and choose Options menu item 2. In Google Chrome Options dialog window, switch to the tab Under the hood and click on the button Content Settings 3. Select Images from the list of options available in the left panel and choose the option Do not show any images 4. Close dialog windows and you are done. • 3 monitors windows xp

  I have a laptop mounted to a dock. When I try to use 2 monitors using dualview everything works fine I get my image across 2 monitors, but when I connect the third one I can't use it although its recognized. Here's what I'd like to do, I'd like to get dual view from my laptop across two monitors, and I have a remote machine connecting to it via remote desktop. I'd like to have that displayed on the third monitor. Is that possible? or some other combination?

• Eee PC - Create USB Recovery Drive w/ Files Copied From Recovery Partition

  I have an Eee PC 1005HAB whose hard disk has failed. I have no recovery CD/DVD, but I did previously back up the contents of the recovery partition, and would like to use them to create a bootable USB to reinstall the factory settings on the new hard drive. Since I simply copied all the files in the recovery partition, rather than hitting F9 during boot and running through the process to create a recovery disk or drive, how do I now use the files to create a bootable USB drive that will do the recovery? In the BIOS I have disabled boot booster and set external drives to the top of the boot priority, but simply copying all the recovery partion files to a usb doesn't allow it to be booted from. I've downloaded the HP utility for creating bootable USB drives and have tried using it to make the USB drive bootable, but I'm not sure what to do with the ghost image and utilities from the recovery partition to get the process to start properly. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to this - what is happening, and how can I fix it? A search of my system for "php_msyql.dll" reveals nothing. Does it have to do with how I compiled it? I don't have the original version of php that came with the mac, I think - I may have reinstalled it somewhere along the way. Any help would be appreciated!

  Why would an external eSata Drive (xSonic with 500Gb notebook Hard Drive) run ok on a Silicon Image based PCI-E to eSata adaptor at about 35MB/s, But then run really slow when plugged into NForce4 Sata socket via cable? I have another version of the problem with Really slow 1MB/s!!! performance on a ASUS P5K Pro Motherboard with E8400 CPU. This time the same card is plugged into a PCI-E socket. The same eSata drive is plugged into the Esata port on the card. All this is running on Windows XP Pro 32bit. Any suggestions on how to diagnose the problems??

  I'm trying to restore android after playing around with ubuntu touch I follow exactly the same steps described the ubuntu's wiki page i.e. Download the factory image corresponding to your device's model and version (initial table has links). Ensure the device is connected and powered on. Extract the downloaded file and cd into the extracted directory. run adb reboot-bootloader run ./flash-all.sh (use sudo if lack of permissions on the workstation don't allow you to talk to the device). The archive is downloaded successfully, checked the sha1 checksum everything is ok. But the ./flash-all.sh fails like this sending 'bootloader' (2308 KB)... OKAY [ 0.513s] writing 'bootloader'... OKAY [ 0.292s] finished. total time: 0.805s rebooting into bootloader... OKAY [ 0.007s] finished. total time: 0.008s sending 'radio' (12288 KB)... OKAY [ 2.668s] writing 'radio'... • What is the difference betweeen "Network install" and "Network Boot" options in virt-manager when installing a new virtual machine

  From my understanding of PXE (Preboot Execution Environment), I know that there must be some negotiation first between the booting client and a DHCP server to obtain network parameters (IP address, etc) in order for the client to be able to fetch the boot loader and kernel image from the boot server. In other words, and aside from being a "virtual" machine, we're talking here about a "bare metal" machine, so there must be some "pre boot" mechanism for those negotiations to take place, and this is exactly what PXE is all about. When I think about the "Network install" option, I can't figure out how the new VM would be able to fetch the boot images (bootloader and kernel) without the previously mentioned mechanism. So, here is a short version of the question: When provisioning a new virtul machine, how do you expect the "Network install" option in virt-manager to work behind the scenes? Many thanks.

  I have a computer that only has two SATA connections and I need to copy one SATA hard drive to another. Since I have to unplug the CD drive to copy the drives I need a USB-bootable utility. I have an old school copy of Norton Ghost (CD based): Ghost has always worked well for me in the past - I see there is a new "version 15" out but I'm not sure if it is worth buying. A friend has Acronis True Image on a USB drive: We tried to use that on the computer but it was unable to copy both partitions (restore partition and main partition). Of course there may be some problem with the drive that is keeping Acronis from working (it is just exiting with a lame error about not being able to copy the disks and no error code or detailed information), but I'm interested in knowing if there is a better, more solid, or widely used solution that I should invest in. What usb-bootable utilities can I use to copy SATA hard drives?

• MySql Data Loss - post mortem analysis - RackSpace Cloud Server

  After a recent 'emergency migration' of a RS cloud server, the mysql databases on our server snapshot image proved to be days out of date from the backup date. And yet files that were uploaded through the impacted webapp had been written to the file system. Related metadata that was written to the database was lost, but the files themselves were backed-up. Once I was able to manually access the mysql data files before the mysql server started (server was configured to start mysql on boot), I was able to see that the update time for ib_logfile1, ib_logfile0 and ibdata1 was days old. As with this poster, mysql data loss after server crash, it's as if some caching controller had told the OS / mysql server that it had committed data that was still in cache, and it was lost instead of flushed. I can't quite wrap my head around how the uploaded files got written but the database data did not. I would have thought that any cache would have flushed system wide, rather than process by process. Any suggestions as to how this might have happened?

• How does one get Vista to display .MOV thumbnails as a frame from the movie?

  I've discovered that Windows Vista explorer shell does not display proper "thumbnail"s for .MOV files. e.g. For .JPG files, the explorer shell, when in Thumbnail mode, displays a scaled down version of the image. But for .MOV files, it displays the same icon as in the non-thumbnail view, which is just some generic thing that shows you it's going to be played with Quicktime or whatever. What XP used to do was show you a frame from the actual movie as the thumbnail. I've looked on internet and found various proposed solutions, but none which actually work. Is there a simple step-by-step process for getting Vista to properly display thumbnails for .MOV files?

  I know that you can use SysPrep and ImageX to create a prepared image that can be used on several systems but the question is. How well does it work in a corporate environment of moving machines from old hardware off to new harddrives and new hardware? EDIT: The system runs accounting software and databases. So would SysPrep remove all License keys and other information which means would cause problems right? Would something else be a better option even though there are heavy costs involved? Currently, when I clone/copy the drive, Windows will black screen on me. So I need something with differential hardware support?

• Using WSUS to update machines not on the domain

  I have a WSUS server providing updates for for the computers on my domain. We also bring allot of machines back to our office and run windows update on them as build image, this means that we end up downloading the same updates over and over again. Is there anyway to get a machine to download its updates from our WSUS Server? i found that theres something running on port 8530 but its just an empty document, in fact every folder listed in IIS config returns a blank document anyone know if this is possible? and how i would do it?

  I have a corrupt TrueCrypt volume. When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems I read a post that says you can try to recover the volume, but I have to open it first to try to recover it. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume. I am using the Mac version, and I have setup an alias for the truecrypt shell command, but I'm not sure how to enter the syntax! Please help. thank you! T

• DLP projector has odd colors

  At my place of work, we have several different video projectors, but they all use DLP technology, and the colors are wrong: for instance, yellow looks more like green, and all other colors are similarly distorted. Any kind of presentation or collaborative work is hindered by these wrong colors. On the laptop screen, the colors are fine but on the projector (hooked up via normal short VGA cable, and showing the same image at the same time), the colors look wrong. This is not about one specific projector or one specific laptop; it seems that any combination of projector + laptop has the exact same problem. Someone said that DLP is poor technology, but that's not true. I'm using a DLP projector at home (regular PC connected via HDMI) and the colors are excellent. Still, there's some kind of curse on the machinery at work. How can we get decent colors?
