• What kind of code would Kent Beck avoid unit testing?

  I've been watching a few of the Is TDD Dead? talks on youtube, and one of the things that surprised me is Kent Beck seems to acknowledge that there are just some kinds of programs that aren't worth unit testing. For example, right here DHH says that Kent Beck is ... very happy to say "Well, TDD doesn't fit in this case, I'm just going to bail" It's frustrating to me that Kent Beck seems to acknowledge this, but nobody asks him to elaborate on it or give concrete examples. I'd like to know the situations where Kent Beck thinks TDD is a bad fit. Nobody can read his mind or speak for him, but I'm hoping he's been transparent enough through his books/tweets/whatever for someone to be able to answer. I'm not necessarily going to take what he says as gospel, but it would be useful to know that the times I've tried TDD and it just felt impossible/useless are situations that he would have bailed on it himself. Or, if it turned out he would have tested that code it'd suggest to me that I was approaching the process very wrong. I also think it would be enlightening to understand why he would bail on such projects. My opinion on why this is not a duplicate of "When is it appropriate to not unit test?" After skimming those answers I'm not satisfied. For example, look at UncleBob's answer. He doesn't even acknowledge that such a situation exists. I really think there's value in understanding Kent Beck's position, not just a general, "What's your opinion?" type of question. After all, he's the father of TDD.

• Prevent mail flagged as spam when switching mail servers (new SPF records)?

  For our business, we send out a significant amount of newsletter alerts to customers that sign up for it on our website. We used to send this mail directly from our web server via PHP. But because the web server limited us to the number of emails we could send per day, we purchased a VM server at a different host (that doesn't throttle email) and we are going to use that account solely for sending out the emails. Anyways, now that the SPF records are going to be different from what they used to be and the source mail server is different, what steps need to be taken to prevent these emails being flagged as spam? I know in Gmail, it's pretty smart about determining if the person actually sending the email is sending it from the server it expects (for flagging Phishing emails, etc). We don't want that to happen to our emails. Just sending a couple test emails out, Gmail's shows the SPF record saying: Authentication-Results: mx.google.com; spf=neutral (google.com: XXX.XXX.23.176 is neither permitted nor denied by best guess record for domain of [email protected]) [email protected] So is there anything we need to do with regards to SPF records as we move forward?

  Hi I have been trying to send commands to a running gnu screen session (4.00.03) in opensolaris, but cannot get it to run any commands through any combination of screen -X Ok, I start a screen session with screen -S test, and then tried to with screen -r -X "date"to just show me the date, when I would reconnect to it. But neither an error message nor output in the screen happened. I tried with so many combinations, that I can't even remember. Any hints on how to accomplish it? The reason why I am doing this is, because I have a program, which does not come as a daemon, and I wish to start it in a screen session, so I can later on see what is going on.

  I'm currently developing a web service using ODSI through Oracle Workshop for WebLogic (ex AquaLogic). I created a datasource on weblogic using the driver "Oracle thin driver 10g", the test succeed on WebLogic. (My Database is Oracle 10 10.2.0.1.0) The problem occours when I try to create the Phisical Data Service in the Oracle Workshop. I choose the following options: Data source type = Relational Data source = [THE CORRECT NAME OF THE SOURCE SET ON WEBLOGIC] Database type = ??? Aqualogic, doesn't allow me to select the database type. I guess is a problem related to the driver set on weblogic... but I ain't sure.Does someone know the nature of my problem ? Tnx

• Intel Server Board S3420GP fails to boot with video connected

  All, Building a new system using an Intel Server Board S3420GP motherboard and an Intel Xeon X3440 processor. Before installing this motherboard into the chassis we want to test that it will actually boot correctly. We have mounted the processor and RAM with no hard drives attached. The boot sequence differs between the next variable: 1) Connecting video results in the system fans ramp up and down, twice, and then the system beeps with the same behavior repeating; the system status light shows "Amber" 2) With no video, the system goes through POST and the diag LEDs show that the system is missing a bootable device Need some assistance identifying why the board would fail to POST with video connected. // Update // Using another Power Supply the system gets passed the fans ramping up and down twice. • Public folder emails not being delivered

  Hello, We have just introduced an Exchange 2010 installation into our existing Exchange 2003 (all standard) environment. We make a lot of use of our Public Folders in 2003, so I am wanting to make a small PF tree in the 2010 system to test some applications against. I have created a few public folders in the 2010 public folder management tool, and mail enabled them, gotten email addresses, etc. However, mail will not be delivered, it queues on my existing 2003 Exchange server's 'Local Delivery' queue, and eventually times out and bounces. I guess the Exchange 'system' including the new 2010 server thinks that all public folder email must need to be delivered to the old 2003 server. Is it possible for me to have two public folder databases that each receive mail? If so, is there something I am missing to enable this? Thanks -R

• HP Photosmart 7450 Prints Noise On Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  I have received a working (in its last location) HP Photosmart 7450 printer. I connected it up to my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit workstation, and the driver was (apparently) installed. The problem is that whenever I try to print from it -- test page, text from notepad, picture, whatever -- it spins through a half dozen sheets of paper, some of which have fractions of text on them, but most of which are either blank or have line noise printed on them. Noise similar to what was printed out on ye olde laserjet printers when the postscript interpreter failed. HP's web site only has a "use the included driver in Windows 7, be happy" instruction. The driver has been removed and added several times. The printer was previously attached to a XP Home computer and worked correctly without incident. Does anyone have any ideas for troubleshooting before I drop this printer in the river?

• Comparing the Performance of Visual Studio's Web Reference to a Custom Class

  As developers, we all make assumptions when programming. Perhaps the biggest assumption we make is that those libraries and tools that ship with the .NET Framework are the best way to accomplish a given task. For example, most developers assume that using ASP.NET's Membership system is the best way to manage user accounts in a website (rather than rolling your own user account store). Similarly, creating a Web Reference to communicate with a web service generates markup that auto-creates a proxy class, which handles the low-level details of invoking the web service, serializing parameters, and so on. Recently a client made us question one of our fundamental assumptions about the .NET Framework and Web Services by asking, "Why should we use proxy class created by Visual Studio to connect to a web service?" In this particular project we were calling a web service to retrieve data, which was then sorted, formatted slightly and displayed in a web page. The client hypothesized that it would be more efficient to invoke the web service directly via the HttpWebRequest class, retrieve the XML output, populate an XmlDocument object, then use XSLT to output the result to HTML. Surely that would be faster than using Visual Studio's auto-generated proxy class, right? Prior to this request, we had never considered rolling our own proxy class; we had always taken advantage of the proxy classes Visual Studio auto-generated for us. • Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. • A question about the cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script

  I have been testing the latest cobbler for PXE booting Ubuntu 12.04.1-server-x86_64 and 12.10-server-x86_64 using a Scentific Linux 6.3 host to run the cobbler server. With the former, I got everything going. But with the later, I haven't been successful. As an attempt to figure things out, I downloaded Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 source package. Examining the content, I soon noticed that Ubuntu's cobbler 2.2.2 came with a cobbler-ubuntu-import bash script. I reviewed the code and spotted something interesting: line 9 of the script states: 9 AUTO_KOPTS='log_host=@@server@@ log_port=514 priority=critical locale=en_US netcfg/choose_interface=auto' But after extensive googling, reading both Debian and Ubuntu's documentation about the debian-installer, I don't see these two kopts log_host and log_port documented anywhere. Putting it in the profile of my current test setup, even my cobbler server host does run rsyslogd, I don't see anything logged either. No, I don't have iptables and selinux on on the cobbler server host. Can anyone point to me where I can read more about these two options? Having the ability to log an installation to a remote central logging host would be really cool.

• How to choose size for a cloud server (rackspace)

  We're going to test the rackspace cloud next week to see how it's working with our web app. It's a LAMP environment with a lot of MySQL databases. How do I choose the "right" server size? On Rackspace I can choose slices with the memory of 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 etc. Right now we don't have a lot of traffic (approx. 1000 visitors/day) but I thought the whole "cloud" idea was to not be limited and auto scale. Update: What I'm looking for is now a specification of what I need. I know it's too complex. I'm looking for examples, case studies etc. It would be interesting to hear something like "Yes we're serving 10 000 daily requests without spikes on a LAMP stack with only one slice on with 2 GB RAM".

• Simple monitoring utility with up/down statuses of the host's network connectivity and services

  We've looked at many monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Zabbix, Nagios) through out the last 10 years but they never took hold because they are overly complicated. I am willing to try them again or something new at this point but with a much simpler goal: ping to check up and down of host tcp probes to test up and down of service notifications via e-mail web GUI prefer an OSS solution Wanted to know if someone has any recommendations on this. This could be a Windows or Linux application. Preferably without the reqirement of agents. I don't even need SNMP support but that may be nice for expanding once we have the above mentioned bare minimum in place.

• My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

  Hello, today we would like to show you few improvements we have prepared in PHP Smarty Framework for NetBeans 7.3. So let's talk about adjustable toggle comment action and code templates. Configurable Comments As some of you requested we implemented toggle comment action with adjustable behavior. In NetBeans 7.3 you can choose in Options between commenting as a "Smarty comments everywhere" or "Language sensitive comments" in Smarty Templates. Toggle comment language sensitive: Toggle comment as Smarty comment everywhere: Code Templates In NetBeans 7.3 we will provide by default many code templates inside Smarty templates or directly inside Smarty tags. Available should be code templates for all built-in or custom functions and modifiers of Smarty 3.x. Besides that you should be able to define additional custom templates easily in Options -> Editor -> Code Templates for "Smarty Templates" or directly for "Smarty Markup" (which means code templates inside Smarty tag).   I've got a ruby on rails application (gitlab) which is installed via puppet. • Why powershell runs executables in separate window?

  On one of my servers (2008 R2) powershell refuses to run executables without extension, so typing cmd (or &cmd) in command prompt results in folowing error message: The term 'cmd' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet Invoking executable one of the following ways pops out separate window (which executes asynchronously in respect to parent). I've tried that in x86 version of powershell and in x64 one. I've tried -Noprofile argument. PATH seems to be OK. It includes System32 and all. The only way I've managed to execute cmd inline form powershell is opening standard cmd.exe shell, executing powershell.exe from it and executing cmd /c echo test from it. Inception, huh? What should I try next?

• Server error 500 when adding .htaccess file in the root folder

  I read a lot of server error 500 questions related to the famous .htaccess file but I have still not found an answer to this error. I have a folder which I used to test the .htaccess file. =>http://localhost/xampp/example/ I copied the .htaccess in the example folder and I get server error 500 my .htaccess file contains this: <IfModule mod_expires.c> ExpiresActive on ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 1 days" </IfModule> I have changed my httpd.conf file: all AllowOverrride None to AllowOverride All i have also uncommented this line: LoadModule expires_module modules/mod_expires.so error.log says: ExpiresActive not allowed here I still get the error 500 What is actually happening? How can I resolve this error? PS: i am running on localhost with XAMPP

  Introducing Extensibility Exchange Version 2 On the heals of Enterprise Manager 12c Release 4 this week comes version 2.0 of the Extensibility Exchange.  A new theme allows optimal viewing on a number of different computing devices from large monitor displays to tablets to smartphones.   One of the first things you'll notice is a scrollable banner with the latest news related to Enterprise Manager and extensibility.  Along with the "slider" and the latest entries from Oracle and the Partner community, new features like a tag cloud and an auto-complete search box provide a better way to find the plug-in, connector or other Enterprise Manager entity you are looking for.  Once you find it, a content details page with specific info related to that particular entity will enable you to access it at the provider's site and also rate and comment on that particular item. • back-end SQL server 2005 databases for website

  Hi, We're migrating an existing IIS website + MS SQL 2005 database (on the same server) to a new test set-up. The existing set-up is too slow. I want one ISS server and 2 X MS SQL server 2005. One live DB server for the website queries (inserts, updates) and another for backups, reports or stored procedures. So the live DB should be more aimed at performance. The other doesn't even need to be synced instantly. What is the best way in SQL server 2005 to set this up. Can somebody point me in the right direction and give me some pointers. Thanks

• Clustering in GlassFish with DCOM on Windows 7

  I've discovered that Windows 7 makes it very difficult to use DCOM and, mainly, the GlassFish clustering commands that rely on DCOM.  I spent a few days trying to solve the problems.  I don't yet have a cookbook for making DCOM work on Windows 7.  But here are a few tips and advice I've found. run asadmin setup-local-dcom -- It now comes automatically with the open source GlassFish 4.  It will write some critical registry entries for you.  run asadmin validate-dcom to test dcom 3.   When I ran validate-dcom on my Windows 7 network I saw the problem below: Successfully resolved host name to: gloin/10.28.51.10 Successfully connected to DCOM Port at port 135 on host gloin. Successfully connected to NetBIOS Session Service at port 139 on host gloin.Successfully connected to Windows Shares at port 445 on host gloin.Can not access the remote file system.  Is UAC on? : Access is denied. I discovered the actual problem is that Windows 7 no longer has the "C$" Administrative file share available by default. If "C$" isn't available then nothing will work. Here is how to expose the "C$" share: Registry Change -- this change allows “C$” to be accessed.  As soon as I set it -- the file copying started working!  [1] regkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System create this key, 32 bit word, with value == 1 LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy 4.  Turn on the Remote Registry Service -- This is critical and it's easy to do. Windows 7 has it turned off by default. MyComputer-right click, manage, services, then turn on Remote Registry Service and set it to start automatically in the fture. 5. Turn off UAC: %systemroot%\system32\UserAccountControlSettings.exe 6. This is where I discovered that McAfee virus scanner blocks all the NetBios shares!  It has to be disabled.

• Need help diagnosing cause of BSOD

  I've got a Windows 7 PC here that was getting very frequent BSODs. The error codes were variant (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY), and it was impossible to use the computer for longer than an hour without getting one. I backed it all up and reinstalled Windows completely, thinking that it was a corrupt driver issue. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the BSODs with the same error messages on this fresh installation. This tells me that it must be some faulty piece of hardware, but I'm not sure what it would be. I ran Memtest+ on the machine, but did not get any errors after 2 passes. I also ran a few built-in recovery mode scans from the HP recovery partition. I need some ideas on how to test the rest of the hardware to solve this issue.
