• Turn off Windows Defender on your builds

  I've spent some time this evening profiling a Python application on Windows, trying to find out why it was so much slower than on Mac or Linux. The application is an in-house build tool which reads a number of config files, then writes some output files. Using the RunSnakeRun Python profile viewer on Windows, two things immediately leapt out at me: we were running os.stat a lot and file.close was really expensive. A quick test convinced me that we were stat-ing the same files over and over. It was a combination of explicit checks and implicit code, like os.walk calling os.path.isdir. I wrote a little cache that memoizes the results, which brought the cost of the os.stats down from 1.5 seconds to 0.6. Figuring out why closing files was so expensive was harder. I was writing 77 files, totaling just over 1MB, and it was taking 3.5 seconds. It turned out that it wasn't the UTF-8 codec or newline translation. It was simply that closing those files took far longer than it should have. I decided to try a different profiler, hoping to learn more. I downloaded the Windows Performance Toolkit. I recorded a couple of traces of my application running, then I looked at them in the Windows Performance Analyzer, whereupon I saw that in each case, the CPU spike of my app was followed by a CPU spike in MsMpEng.exe. What's MsMpEng.exe? It's Microsoft's antimalware engine, at the heart of Windows Defender. I added my build tree to the list of excluded locations, and my runtime halved. The 3.5 seconds of file closing dropped to 60 milliseconds, a 98% reduction. The moral of this story is: don't let your virus checker run on your builds.

• ADF Seeded Customizations in JDeveloper 11.1.2.1

  For the ADF training I needed a demo application that shows ADF seeded customizations functionality. I’m using the latest JDeveloper 11.1.2.1, so I decided to download the “Customizing and Personalizing an ADF Application” completed tutorial application available here I’ve downloaded and unzipped the CustomizeApp.zip and opened the CustomizeApp.jws in the JDeveloper 11.1.2.1 using the Customization Role. The result was the following: MDS-00036 “Cannot instantiate the class oracle.model.mycompany.SiteCC”. I thought: “OK, that’s because SiteCC class is not accessible to JDeveloper classloader, I should jar it and put to the <JDEVELOPER_HOME> \jdev\lib\patches like I did in JDeveloper 11.1.1.5 and ealier”.  No way, it JDeveloper 11.1.2 we do not have this patches directory at all! It seems that is because of the new architecture of the JDeveloper plugins based on OSGi.   I looked through the tutorial and have not found any step related to the jar–ing the SiteCC class and moving it to the specific directory.  So, JDeveloper 11.1.2  is smart enough to find my customization class and add it to the classpath without any specific actions from my side.  But why am I getting this “cannot instantiate the class” error?I’ve checked at the the full path to my CustomizeApp.jws  - c:\temp\ADF personalizations\CustomizeApp\CustomizeApp.jws  and noticed the space in the name of the directory.  Was it the root cause of the issue?  Yes!  I’ve renamed the ADF personalizations folder to pers, opened the c:\temp\pers\CustomizeApp\CustomizeApp.jws,  and received the expected behaviour: So, be aware of the spaces in the paths when working with JDeveloper…

• Encrypted home breaks on login

  My home is encrypted, which breaks the login. Gnome and other services try to find all sorts of .files, write to them, read from them and so on. E.g. .ICEauthority. They are not found (yet) because at that moment the home is still encrypted. I do not have automatic login set, since that has known issues with encrypted home in Ubuntu. When I go trough the following steps, there is no problem: boot up the system. [ctr][alt][F1], login. run ecryptfs-mount-private [ctr][alt][F7], done. Can now login. I may have some setting wrong, but have no idea where. I suspect ecryptfs-mount-private should be ran earlier in bootstrap, but do not know how to make it so. Some issues that may cause trouble: I have a fingerprint reader, it works for login and PAM. I have three keyrings in seahorse, containing passwords from old machines (backups). Not just one. Suggestion was that the PAM settings are wrong, so here are the relevant parts from /etc/pam.d/common-auth. # here are the per-package modules (the "Primary" block) auth [success=3 default=ignore] pam_fprintd.so auth [success=2 default=ignore] pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_winbind.so krb5_auth krb5_ccache_type=FILE cached_login try_first_pass # here's the fallback if no module succeeds auth requisite pam_deny.so # prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already; # this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code # since the modules above will each just jump around auth required pam_permit.so # and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block) auth optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap # end of pam-auth-update config I am not sure about how this configuration works, but ut seems that maybe the*optional* in auth optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap is causing the ecryptfs to be ignored?

• Textures quality issues with Libgdx

  I have drawn several vector objets and characters ( in Adobe Illustrator ) for my game on Android. They are all scalable at any size without any quality losses ( of course it's vector ^^ ). I have tried to simulate my gameboard directly on Illustrator just before setting my assests on libdgx to implement them in my game. I set all the objects at the good size, so that they fit perfectly on my XHDPI device I am running my test on. As you can see it works great ( for me at least ^^ ), the PNG quality is good for me, as expected ! So I have edited all my PNG at this size, set my assets on libgdx and build my game apk. And here is a screenshot of my gameboard ( don't pay attention at the differences of placing and objects, but check at the objets presents on both screenshot ). As you can see, I have a loss of my PNG quality in the game. It can be seen clealry on the hedgehog PNG, but also ( but not as obvious ) on the mushroom ( check at the outline ) and the hole PNG. If you really pay attention, on every objects, you can see pixels that are not visible on my first screenshot. And I just can't figure out why this is happening Oo If you have any ideas, you are very welcome ! Thanks. The things is that it looks like he is suppose to, which means, high quality with no pixels. The hedgehog PNG is coming from an atlas : layer.addActor(hedgehog); No loss of quality with this method So we think the problem is comming from the method we are using to display it on our gameboard : blocks[9][3] = new Block(TextureUtils.hedgehog, new Vector2(9, 3)); the block is getting the size from the vector we are associating to it, but we have a loss of quality with this method.

  Please follow this steps: 1. Log in to your Control Panel. 2. From the menu, select Databases ? SQL Server 2008. 3. Click the Create User button. 4. Enter a user name and password and click Save. In this demonstration, the user name is dotnetuser and the password is dotnetuserpass. 5. Click the Create Database button. 6. Enter a database name and grant access to the user you created above and click Save. In this demonstration the database is called DotNetAuthentication. 7. Locate and run the ASP.NET SQL Server Setup Wizard. This file is located in your .NET framework directory and is named aspnet_regsql.exe (example: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regsql.exe). 8. Click Next and choose Configure SQL Server for application services. 9. Click Next and enter the server name and database log in credentials. The server name is the web site pointer address to where your application will be published and the log in credentials are the SQL server user name and password created earlier. 10. Click Next twice and the wizard will take a moment to complete the scripting actions that populate the new database with all the objects necessary to configure the ASP.NET provider.  Once complete, click Finish to close the wizard. 11. Finally, modify the web.config file in your ASP.NET web application to use the database you created.

• Slick2D + LWJGL collision system

  So I've been learning java for a while and have explored slick and lwjgl before but went away from using Slick for a while. But I've recently gone back to using it (as I'm making a platformer and Tiled will be really helpful). But here's where my problems begin: collision. I have a player polygon and I check to see if it's colliding with my tiled map with this method: public static boolean playerCollisionWith() { for(int i = 0; i < Blockmap.entities.size(); i++) { Block entity1 = (Block) Blockmap.entities.get(i); if(playerPoly.intersects(entity1.poly)) { return true; } } return false; } This would work normally but I'm using a different method for movement. Instead of just adding a speed variable to the player's x axis. I move like this: if(Keyboard.isKeyDown(Keyboard.KEY_RIGHT)) { speedX = Math.min(5, speedX + 1); moving = true; playerPoly.setX(x); if(playerCollisionWith()) { speedX = -5; playerPoly.setX(x); } } That Math.min call is what is messing me up =. I can't just call speedX = -5, because when I do the player "bounces" when the right mouse button is down and it's colliding. Bounces as in flashes back and forth REALLY quickly. But I don't really know how I would make it so that collisions on the y axis would work either, whether the player is jumping or not. So if I could get some help with how to fix this problem that would be great. Thank you for the help!

• Did the developers of Java conciously abandon RAII?

  As a long-time C# programmer, I have recently come to learn more about the advantages of Resource Acquisition Is Initialization (RAII). In particular, I have discovered that the C# idiom: using (my dbConn = new DbConnection(connStr) { // do stuff with dbConn } has the C++ equivalent: { DbConnection dbConn(connStr); // do stuff with dbConn } meaning that remembering to enclose the use of resources like DbConnection in a using block is unnecessary in C++ ! This seems to a major advantage of C++. This is even more convincing when you consider a class that has an instance member of type DbConnection, for example class Foo { DbConnection dbConn; // ... } In C# I would need to have Foo implement IDisposable as such: class Foo : IDisposable { DbConnection dbConn; public void Dispose() { dbConn.Dispose(); } } and what's worse, every user of Foo would need to remember to enclose Foo in a using block, like: using (var foo = new Foo()) { // do stuff with "foo" } Now looking at C# and its Java roots I am wondering... did the developers of Java fully appreciate what they were giving up when they abandoned the stack in favor of the heap, thus abandoning RAII? (Similarly, did Stroustrup fully appreciate the significance of RAII?)

• Oracle Inroduces a New Line of Defense for Databases

  Today at the 2011 RSA Conference, we announced the immediate availability of our new Oracle Database Firewall, the latest addition to a comprehensive portfolio of database security solutions. Oracle Database Firewall is a network-based software solution that monitors database traffic, and can detect and block SQL injection and other attacks from reaching Oracle and non-Oracle databases. According to the 2010 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, SQL injection attacks against databases are responsible for 89% of all breached data. SQL injection attacks are a technique for controlling responses from the database server through applications. This attack exploits the inherent trust between application layer and the back-end database. Previously the only way organizations had to safeguard against SQL injection attacks was a complete overhaul of their application code. Obviously a very costly, complex, and often impossible undertaking for most organizations. Enter the new Oracle Database Firewall. It can help prevent SQL injection attacks by establishing a defensive perimeter around your databases. The Oracle Database Firewall uses an innovative SQL grammar analysis to inspect the database traffic against pre-defined policies.   What is the difference between building an application Outside In vs building it Inside Out using TDD? These are the books I read about TDD and unit testing: Test Driven Development: By Example Test-Driven Development: A Practical Guide: A Practical Guide Real-World Solutions for Developing High-Quality PHP Frameworks and Applications Test-Driven Development in Microsoft .NET xUnit Test Patterns: Refactoring Test Code The Art of Unit Testing: With Examples in .Net Growing Object-Oriented Software, Guided by Tests---This one was really hard to understand since JAVA isn't my primary language :) Almost all of them explained TDD basics and unit testing in general, but with little mention of the different ways the application can be constructed. Another thing I noticed is that most of these books (if not all) ignore the design phase when writing the application. They focus more on writing the test cases quickly and letting the design emerge by itself. However, I came across a paragraph in xUnit Test Patterns that discussed the ways people approach TDD. There are 2 schools out there Outside In vs Inside Out. Sadly the book doesn't elaborate more on this point. I wish to know what is the main difference between these 2 cases. When should I use each one of them? To a TDD beginner which one is easier to grasp? What is the drawbacks of each method? Is there any materials out there that discuss this topic specifically?

  I'm working on an application. I'm using a mixture of TDD and DDD. I'm working hard to separate the layers of my application and that is where my question comes in. My solution is laid out as follows Solution MyApp.Domain (WinRT class library) Entity (Folder) Interfaces(Folder) IPost.cs (Interface) BlogPosts.cs(Implementation of IPost) Service (Folder) Interfaces(Folder) IDataService.cs (Interface) BlogDataService.cs (Implementation of IDataService) MyApp.Presentation(Windows 8 XAML + C# application) ViewModels(Folder) BlogViewModel.cs App.xaml MainPage.xaml (Contains a property of BlogViewModel MyApp.Tests (WinRT Unit testing project used for my TDD) So I'm planning to use my ViewModel with the XAML UI I'm writing a test and define my interfaces in my system and I have the following code thus far. [TestMethod] public void Get_Zero_Blog_Posts_From_Presentation_Layer_Returns_Empty_Collection() { IBlogViewModel viewModel = _container.Resolve<IBlogViewModel>(); viewModel.LoadBlogPosts(0); Assert.AreEqual(0, viewModel.BlogPosts.Count, "There should be 0 blog posts."); } viewModel.BlogPosts is an ObservableCollection<IPost> Now.. my first thought is that I'd like the LoadBlogPosts method on the ViewModel to call a static method on the BlogPost entity. My problem is I feel like I need to inject the IDataService into the Entity object so that it promotes loose coupling. Here are the two options that I'm struggling with: Not use a static method and use a member method on the BlogPost entity. Have the BlogPost take an IDataService in the constructor and use dependency injection to resolve the BlogPost instance and the IDataService implementation. Don't use the entity to call the IDataService. Put the IDataService in the constructor of the ViewModel and use my container to resolve the IDataService when the viewmodel is instantiated. So with option one the layers will look like this ViewModel(Presentation layer) - Entity (Domain layer) - IDataService (Service Layer) or ViewModel(Presentation layer) - IDataService (Service Layer)

  Intro This is the first in a series of small articles about what is new in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4. The series is build around a open source demo application SilverAmp which is available on http://SilverAmp.CodePlex.com.   MVVM Project and Item Templates Expression Blend has got a new project template to get started with a Model-View-ViewModel project  easily. The template provides you with a View and a ViewModel bound together. It also adds the ViewModel to the SampleData of your project. It is available for both Silverlight and Wpf. To get going, start a new project in Expression Blend and select Silverlight DataBound Application from the Silverlight project type. In this case I named the project DemoTest1. The solution now contains several folders: SampleData; which contains a data to show in Blend ViewModels; starts with one file, MainViewModel.cs Views; containing MainView.xaml with codebehind used for binding with the MainViewModel class. and your regular App.xaml and MainPage.xaml The MainViewModel class contains a sample property and a sample method. Both the property and the method are used in the MainView control. The MainView control is a regular UserControl and is placed in the MainPage. You can continue on building your applicaition by adding your own properties and methods to the ViewModel and adding controls to the View. Adding Views with ViewModels is very easy too. The guys at Microsoft where nice enough to add a new Item template too: a UserControl with ViewModel. If you add this new item to the root of your solution it will add the .xaml file to the views folder and a .cs file to the ViewModels folder. Conclusion The databound Application project type is a great to get your MVVM based project started.   Once you've set up the NetBeans Platform sources as your NetBeans Platform, you're able to debug the NetBeans Platform itself. That's an occasional question (certainly not a frequent question) on the mailing list and in NetBeans Platform courses: "Is it possible to debug the NetBeans Platform?" Well, here's how: Firstly, set up the NetBeans Platform sources as your NetBeans Platform. Now, open into NetBeans IDE the NetBeans module where you'd like to place a breakpoint. That in itself is the hardest part of this task. I.e., you know you want to debug the NetBeans Platform, but have no idea where to place your breakpoint. One way to figure that out, from 7.1 onwards, is to take a visual snapshot of the NetBeans Platform and then analyze that snapshot in NetBeans IDE. To do this, right-click a module that you've set as using the NetBeans Platform sources as your NetBeans Platform and then choose Debug. The application, i.e., the NetBeans Platform, including your custom module, starts up and you'll see this, i.e., NetBeans IDE in debug mode together with your NetBeans Platform application:Notice there's a new toolbar button (new in NetBeans IDE 7.1) that resembles an orange camera. Click that button and the IDE creates a visual snapshot of the running application, which in this case is the NetBeans Platform. When you click components in the visual snapshot, the Navigator and Properties window display information about the related GUI component: By clicking the above components, you can end up identifying the component you'd like to debug and even the module where it is found. Open that module. Set a breakpoint on the line of interest. Right-click the module again and choose Debug. A debug session starts and when the breakpoint is hit, the Debugger in the IDE will open and there you can step through the NetBeans Platform sources.

  In this post I will be looking into a new feature that has been added to theVS 2012 IDE. I am talking about Page Inspector that gives developers a very good/handy way to identify layout issues and to find out which part of server side code is responsible for that HTML snippet of code.If you are interested in reading other posts about VS 2012 and .Net 4.5 please have a look here and here.This tool is integrated into the VS 2012 IDE.We can launch it in different ways. 1) We will create a new ASP.Net MVC application (an Internet application). I will not add any code.2) In the Solution Explorer I choose my project and right-click. From the available options select View in Page InspectorHave a look at the picture below.  3) We can launch Page Inspector from the Standard Toolbar. Please have a look at the picture below.   4) Let's view our application with Page Inspector. First I inspect the About link-menu.I can see very quickly the HTML that is rendering for that link to appear. I also see the server side code (the actual view, _Layout.cshtml) that is responsible for that link. This is something developers always craved for. We can also see the CSS styles that are used to style this link (About).Have a look at the picture below Obviously there are similar tools that I have been using in the past when I wanted to change a part of the HTML or see what piece of CSS code affects my layout. I used Firebug when viewing my web applications in the Firefox browser. Internet Explorer and Chrome have also great similar tools that help web developers to identify issues with a site's appearance/issues.Please bear in mind that Page Inspector works with all forms of the ASP.Net stack e.g Web Forms,Web Pages.Hope it helps!!!!!
