    I've done a tiny, tiny bit of TDD in building an app for a company that I interned with. We used lots of mocking and wrote lots of assert statements, after reading lots of blogs, I'm convinced that TDD is the way to go, but how do you go about TDD web applications? My main framework is Yii in PHP. My main questions are: What do you test? Models? Controllers? Views? How do you know if the output is correct? All my web apps interact with a DB, are there cavets to that and gotchas? Can I do testing in Netbeans? Can you test form elements or just strictly objects & methods?

  • Coding a web browser on Windows using a layout engine?

    I've never attempted anything like this before but what I want to do is code a browser for Windows. I know that I can use the web-browser control that Microsoft has released, but I'm interested in seeing how the problem is solved from a lower level. So I want to know what layout engine I should be looking at? Or is a layout engine the best way to go? I've been looking at WebKit, but it seems rather Mac-centric, so I'm wondering if there are any more practical one's for windows? Has Microsoft released the source code for their webbrowser winforms control in the .Net framework? That would be dependent on the CLR anyway, I suppose? Any suggestions?

Plus there are more enhancements for databinding too.  And the list goes on and on with features such as performance and “trusted application”. Where is Sl 5 now? its in Release Candidate now so the final bits should not be far down the road.

  • D3D9 Alpha Blending on the surfaces

    I have a surface (OffScreenPlain or RenderTarget with D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8) which I copy pixels (ARGB) to, from a third party function. Before pixel copying, Bits are accessed by LockRect. This surface is then StretchRect to the Backbuffer which is (D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8). Surface and Backbuffer are different dimensions. Filtering is set to D3DTEXF_NONE. Just after creating the d3d device I've set following RenderState settings D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE -> TRUE D3DRS_BLENDOP -> D3DBLENDOP_ADD D3DRS_SRCBLEND -> D3DBLEND_SRCALPHA D3DRS_DESTBLEND -> D3DBLEND_INVSRCALPHA But I see no alpha blending happening. I've verified that alpha is specified in pixels. I've done a simple test by creating a vertex buffer and drawing a triangle (DrawPrimitive) which displays with alpha blending. In this test surface was StretchRect first and then DrawPrimitive, and the surface content displays without alpha blending and the triangle displays with alpha blending. What am I missing here?     I am trying to create a browser game using actionscript/flash. Currently, I'm trying to understand how I would go about creating a back-end which interfaced with my MySQL database. As far as I understand, If I create a php file on a webserver called test.php and then navigate to a webpage hosted on the server eg. www.example.com/test, the php script will run and display the result in my browser. This would use http. Is this how communication between client and server usually works in a flash game? for example, if the game needed to query the db. Would actionscript have to essentially invoke the url of the php script that would execute the query? it could then parse the data and use it. If this is the case, then is JSON considered a good way to transfer data over http?

  • Changing Filename Case with TortoiseSVN on Windows [migrated]

    I've been working on a development project using a Windows machine as a test server. Eventually, I'd like the "live" version to end up on a Linux machine. While trying to test on the Linux machine, it became apparent that I needed to change the case of several file names as Windows was case insensitive but Linux wasn't. When I changed the file name case in Windows, TortoiseSVN recognized that the file hand changed and marked my folders appropriately. However, when I tried to commit my changes, not only did TortoiseSVN tell me that no changes had been made, but it had actually reverted all of the file name changes I had made back to their original case. My question is, is there a simple way to alter the file name case from a Windows PC and have the changes appear in my repository? I'd like to avoid any kind of delete, commit, replace, commit scenario to keep my commits tidy if possible. Thanks!

  • Faulty memtest result

    I've been a bit suspicious about my RAM lately. They seem not work like i expect them to. For instance i run a lot of Virtual Test Environments in VMware Workstation and lately Ubuntu starts to lag just running 4 virtual machines each dedicated 512 MB. BTW im having 6GB memory on my laptop. This did not use to be a problem for me on my last laptop that even had a lot lower CPU resources. So i was led to try a memtest after reading some websites about RAM testing. So i did a memtest overnight but when i woke up this morning i was just looping and i could not Exit or do anything. It was just looping the number of errors besides test 7 which you can see in the lower right part of the screenshot. Can anyone interpret this screenshot for me? Do i have a faulty set of RAMs?

  • Writing selenium tests, should I just get it done or get it right?

    I'm attempting to drive my user interface (heavy on javascript) through selenium. I've already tested the rest of my ajax interaction with selenium successfully. However, this one particular method seems to be eluding me because I can't seem to fake the correct click event. I could solve this problem by simply waiting in the test for the user to click a point and then continuing with the test but this seems like a cop out. But I'm really running out of time on my deadline to have this done and working. Should I just get this done and move on or should I spend the extra (unknown) amount of time to fix this problem and be able to have my selenium tests 100% automated?
