• myToys.de GmbH announces integration of ZVT payment terminal interface with Oracle Retail Point-of-Service

  In our latest guest post, Sascha Kraatz, Developer Oracle E-Business Suite of myToys.de announces the development and integration of its ZVT payment terminal interface with the Oracle Retail Point-of-Service solution. myToys.de GmbH, which runs Oracle Retail Point-of-Service (ORPOS) in its 13 retail stores in Germany (see press release), has developed and implemented a Java-based interface for integrating the ZVT payment terminal with ORPOS. Through the combined support of payment service provider, easycash GmbH, and Ingenico GmbH, Germany´s leading payment terminal provider, myToys.de has become the first organisation to create this new automated solution for the Oracle Retail Point-of-Service, which has eliminated input errors that could occur with manual payment terminals and is localised for the German market. Ingo Stober, head of retail business at myToys.de confirms: “With this solution, we can speed up the payment process, reduce manual errors and enhance the customer experience in our stores”. myToys.de GmbH is a member of the Otto Group and one of the leading multichannel retailers for toys and other kids products in Germany. Customers can choose from over 100,000 attractive products, starting with items for expectant mothers or basic baby equipment to items for school children and beyond.   We have released the latest Oracle VM updates for both x86 and SPARC.  For Oracle VM Server for SPARC: Oracle Solaris 11 SRU8.5 includes Oracle VM server for SPARC 2.2 so if you're already running a Solaris 11 as the control domain. All you need do is a 'pkg update' to get the latest 2.2 bits. • Change in Job Title and Responsibilities

  I've spent the past 7 years focused primarily on code and database performance.  It's an area that I have a passion for, as well as a propensity.  But what I've found is that its very hard to change the culture of a development environment.  You can teach performance, you can encourage performance, you might see slight shift in how devs think about performance.  But without full management backing and support you wont get long lasting changes in the development culture.  And in the end, you are back to being the "Perf Guy", fixing performance design flaws, after the fact, one by one by one. Which is why last year I asked my boss to changed my title and responsibilities to more naturally align with the team I was working for.  So now I'm a Computing Research Engineer (vague, I know), researching in the field of Big Data analytics and visualization. I've found this change revitalizing and a lot of fun.  And given the nature of Big Data (its, um…big) the performance aspects are always ever present.

• A list of pros and cons to giving developers “Local Admin” privileges to their machines? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is local “User” rights enough or do developers need Local Administrator or Power User while coding? I currently work for a large utilities company which currently does not grant “Local Admin” access to developers. This is causing a lot of grief as anything that requires elevated privileges needs to be done by the Desktop Support/Server Teams. In some cases this can take several days and requires our developers to have to show why they need this access. I personally think that all developers should have local administration rights and are currently fighting with management to achieve this but I would like to know what other people think about this. To achieve this I would like to hear what people believe are the pros and cons of letting developers have local admin access to their machines. Here are some I have come up with: Pros Loss time is keep low as developers can resolve issues that would normally require Local Admin Evaluation of tools and software are possible to improve productivity Desktop support time not wasted installing services and software on developers PC Cons Developers install software on local PC that could be malicious to others or inappropriate in a business environment Desktop Support required to support a PC that is not the norm Development done with admin access that then fails when promoted to another environment that does not have the same access level

• BizTalk 2009 - BizTalk Server Best Practice Analyser

  The BizTalk Server Best Practices Analyser  allows you to carry out a configuration level verification of your BizTalk installation, evaluating the deployed configuration but not modifying or tuning anything that it finds. The Best Practices Analyser uses "reading and reporting" to gather data from different sources, such as: Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes SQL Server databases Registry entries When I first ran the analyser I got a number of errors, if you get any errors these should all be acted upon to resolve them, you should then run the scan again and see if any thing else is reported that needs acting upon. As you can see in the image above, the initial issue that jumped out to me was that the SQL Server Agent was not started. The reasons for this was absent mindedness - this run was against my development PC and I don't have SQL/BizTalk actively running unless I am using them.  Starting the agent service and running the scan again gave me the following results: This resolved most of the issues for me, but next major issue to look at was that there was no tracking host running.  You can also see that I was still getting an error with two of the SQL jobs.  The problem here was that I had not yet configured these two SQL jobs.  Configuring the backup and purge jobs and then starting the tracking host before running the scan again gave: This had cleared all the critical issues, but I did stil have a number of warnings.  For example on this report I was warned that the BizTalk Message box is hosted on the BizTalk Server.  While this is known to be less than ideal, it is as I expected on my development environment where I have installed Visual Studio, SQL and BizTalk on my laptop and I was happy to ignore this and other similar warnings. In your case you should take a look at any warnings you receive and decide what you want to do about each of them in turn.

  Welcome to ADF Mobile team's weblog.  My name is Joe Huang - I am the product manager for ADF Mobile.  Oracle ADF Mobile is a part of Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF) that support the development of enterprise/business applications that run on mobile devices.  The development tool for this framework is of course Oracle JDeveloper.  As some of you may know, we currently support the development of mobile browser-based application - this part of product is called ADF Mobile Browser.  Additionally, we are close to release a technology preview of ADF Mobile Client, which supports development of on-device, disconnect capable mobile applications.  What's truly unique about ADF Mobile development process is that it's a very visual and declarative experience, while still allow power Java developers to completely extend the framework to their liking.  The framework also provides a rich set of services needed by an enterprise-grade mobile application - these services would literally take years to implement if they are to be built from the ground up.  However, by using JDeveloper and ADF Mobile, you get the entire framework at your service!In the coming entries, the ADF Mobile product development team will publish any news, best practices, our observation on mobile technology trends, or just our experiences in playing with "gadgets".  Be sure to check back on this page!Sincerely,Joe HuangOracle

• What is a “pretty and proper OO” way for handling sessions and authentication?

  Is coupling these two concepts a bad approach? As of right now I'm delegating all session handling and whether or not a user desires to logout in my config.inc file. As I was writing my Auth class I started wondering whether or not my Auth class should be taking care of most of the logic in my config.inc. Regardless, I'm sure there's a more elegant way of handling this... • ODI - Creating a Repository in a 12c Pluggable Database

  To install ODI 11g into an Oracle 12c pluggable database, one way is to connect using a TNS string to the pluggable database service that is executing. For example when I installed my master repository, I used a JDBC URL such as; jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=mydbserver)(PORT=1522)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=PDBORA12.US.ORACLE.COM)))   I used the above approach rather than the host:port:sid which is a common mechanism many users use to quickly get up and going. Below you can see the repository creation wizard in action, I used the 11g release and simply installed the master and work repository into my pluggable database. Be wise with your repository IDs, I simply used the default, but you should be aware that these are key in larger deployments. The database in 12c has much more tighter control on users and resources, so just getting the user creating with sufficient resource on tablespaces etc in 12c was a little more work. Once you have the repositories up and running, then the fun starts using the 12c features. More to come.

The next six years were a wild roller coaster ride for employees, partners, and--most unfortunately--for many of our customers. (Not entirely my fault BTW). In this Special Edition, I immediately gravitated to Aaron Lazenby's interview with Lyle Ekdahl, Group VP and General Manager of Oracle JD Edwards, "Better All The Time".  I met Lyle in 2003 when he joined PeopleSoft to guide JD Edwards' CRM development. He dropped by my cube (it was a double-wide cube, mind you) to explain his strategy. It was an intense first impression. Passionate, competent, personable. From my discussions with partners and customers, it is clear that for Oracle's JD Edwards customers it is getting better all the time. Now I've got that darn Beatle's song stuck in my head...

On Thursday Nov 17, Tyler Jewell, VP Product Management for Oracle's Platform as a Service, will participate in the Performance and Scalability Panel moderated by InfoQ founder and QCon SF Program Committee Member Floyd Marinescu. That panel, part of the Performance and Scalability Solutions track, begins at 10:35 a.m. in the Olympic room. Following that panel discussion, Tyler will fly solo with a presentation on Java EE 7: Developing for the Cloud, also part of the Performance and Scalability Solutions track. That session kicks off at 12:05 p.m., also in the Olympic room. On Friday Nov 18 Tyler will jump tracks, so to speak, when he presents The Architecture of Oracle's Public Cloud, part of the Architecture Case Studies: Cloud track. That session begins at 4:50 p.m. in the Stanford room. Of course, QCon also offers ample meet-and-greet opportunities. One such opportunity happens in the hospitality suite hosted by the Java Community Process Executive Committee. That shindig gets in gear at 5:50 pm on Thursday. • Demantra USA Based Companies and SOX Compliance

  A USA based company is assessing Demantra Trade Promotion Management (TPM) capability.  It appears that SOX is necessary in their case due to the nature of what TPM does and the necessity for auditability.  Do we have any detail on SOX compliance for Demantra? Answser ------- SOX compliance with regards to IT: 1.  Requires auditing of data changes done by who, what, when     a. Audit trail profiles can be set up for key financial series and view them in audit trail reports     b. One functionality we do not have which typically is asked for is user login history. We have only        active sessions, history is not available. 2.  Segregation of duties     a. With respect to TPM, you could have deduction and financial analyst for settlement be different        from promotion creator, promotion approver or sales team.     b. Budget Approver for funds can be different from funds consumer.     c. Promotion creator can be different than promotion approver     d. For a US customer you may have to write some custom scripts to capture promotion status change        and produce an external report as part of compliance. • Nautilus can't start due to segmentation fault

  Out of the blue I can't start nautilus today. When I try to open any directory it tries to open it, and sometimes I even can see the content of directory, but finally it's closed, after that there are no icons on desktop. When I tried to launch nautilus from terminal, I got: $ nautilus . Initializing nautilus-dropbox 0.7.1 Initializing nautilus-gdu extension Segmentation fault (core dumped) I've tried to move ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata folder, I don't have nautilus-open-terminal package and don't have file /usr/local/lib/libgtk-3.so.0 Also I can't update system right now.
