• Is it safe to override `release` for debugging?

  Sometimes I need to find out if an object will really be released. I could use Instruments of course, but that takes much time, and I have to search into millions of objects, so I used to do this: -(void)release { NSLog("I'm released"); [super release]; } But the problem is: is this safe to do? Can I get any problems when I override -(void)release. Also, is it really void? And what if I build my application for distribution, but per accident leave it there? Or is it just safe? Thanks

  My code works for ORs as I've listed it below but I want to use AND instead of OR and it fails. I'm not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. Basically I have a Linq query that searches on multiple fields in an XML file. The search fields might not all have information. Each element runs the extension method, and tests the equality.   Hello I could not understand why after logging in from address: http://localhost/en/accounts/login/?next=/en/test/ I get refirected to http://localhost/accounts/profile/ So i ran search in django files and found that this address is the default LOGIN_REDIRECT_URL for django. What i did not understand is why it gets redirected to there. I guessed, that my login form's post address should be : /accounts/login/?next=/en/test/ instead of /accounts/login/ I wrote it into template and it worked. But since the redirect url changes dynamically, how can i make this login post forms address change dynamically too? is there a templatetag for that or something? Alan

• What is the `name` keyword in JavaScript?

  When I typed this apparently innocent snippet of code: values.name gedit highlighted name as a keyword. However, name is not listed by the pages linked to by an answer to a question about reserved keywords. I also did a couple trivial tests in SpiderMonkey, but name seemed to act like an ordinary identifier. A Google search didn't tell me much either. However, I did find a page listing name in "Other JavaScript Keywords". My guess is that name is a function or a member of some DOM element and does not intrude on the namespace. Is name really a keyword in JavaScript? If so, what does it do?

• Command-line options for HH and opening CHM Windows Help Files

  I'd like to be able to write Inquisit scripts in Vim. In the standard Inquisit application for writing scripts, I can press F1 and it brings up help on the topic related to the word under the cursor. I'd like to set up the same functionality through Vim. The help file for Inquisit is stored in a Windows .CHM file. I figured there must be a set of command-line options for doing a keyword search in a chm file, but I haven't been able to find a complete list of the command-line options, presumably for HH.exe. I did find this page with a few pointers, but it does not have a full listing of command-line options. I also found this discussion on AutoHotKey discussion board. It mentions keyhh. I also just found a vimscript designed to do exactly what I want Questions: Is there a complete list of command-line options for HH.exe? Is there a better way of going about what I am trying to do?

• How does MTOM work + sample code

  I am trying to make a very simple web-service which does the following: The client hits the web service requesting a file. The web service's service class queries a hashtable which has the key (search query) and the value as the base64encoded value of a file (say a pdf) Now,I need to use MTOM to return the base64encoded value stored in the hashtable to the client. It's upto the client to decode it and convert it to pdf. So, here are my questions: I understand we encode files to base64 for transmission via web service, but where and how does MTOM come into the picture there? Can some one provide me a simple method which uses MTOM and sends the data back. Do we need to specify something in the WSDL too? or a simple String return type would suffice? Why/Why not? Thanks I have seen this code. It uses a lot of annotations, I just need a simple java code using MTOM. New to J2EE HERE :)

• When will NAnt reach version 1.0

  I like Nant very much. I do a lot of scripting with NAnt. It is a great little tool. Since NAnt is pre 1.0, when problems occur, I often think if that it is a problem with NAnt itself, but this is not always the case. One funny example: After running the oracle scripts I parsed the log output to make sure there was no problem. I was testing this with a small log file and it was fine. I used the task to load the file contents to a string property and used a regex to search for errors. When I used this script for a large log file, I stopped getting the "build failed" message at the bottom, because I was printing the error messages. Because the "build failed" was hiding at the top, I thought NAnt crashed, but it worked fine. It would be better for NAnt to have a 1.0 release. Any reasons why not?

• MVC2 Annotations dll not found by VS2008 compiler, how do I make it look in the right place?

  I have VS2008 SP1 running with .NET 3.5 SP1 I have MVC2 running (with MVC1 uninstalled) All works ok except when I call the System.Components.DatAnnotations.dll, then the compiler complains of not being able to find it. Message is: Could not load file or assembly 'System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations, Version=99.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. I tried repairing and reinstalling SP1 of both VS and .Net framework. I also tried referencing the assembly by browsing to it in the Reference assemblies in Programs directory. I have tried out most of the Google search result forum results but to no avail, I think it may be something simple which I have over looked. Any ideas?

  I have written up a python script that allows a user to input a message, his email and the time and they would like the email sent. This is all stored in a mysql database. However, how do I get the script to execute on the said time and date? will it require a cron job? I mean say at 2:15 on april 20th, the script will search the database for all times of 2:15, and send out those emails. But what about for emails at 2:16? I am using a shared hosting provided, so cant have a continously running script. Thanks

  SQL Server 2000. Single table has a list of users that includes a unique user ID and a non-unique user name. I want to search the table and list out any users that share the same non-unique user name. For example, my table looks like this: ID User Name Name == ========= ==== 0 parker Peter Parker 1 parker Mary Jane Parker 2 heroman Joseph (Joey) Carter Jones 3 thehulk Bruce Banner What I want to do is do a SELECT and have the result set be: ID User Name Name == ========= ==== 0 parker Peter Parker 1 parker Mary Jane Parker from my table. I'm not a T-SQL guru. I can do the basic joins and such, but I'm thinking there must be an elegant way of doing this. Barring elegance, there must be ANY way of doing this. • Efficiently check string for one of several hundred possible suffixes

  I need to write a C/C++ function that would quickly check if string ends with one of ~1000 predefined suffixes. Specifically the string is a hostname and I need to check if it belongs to one of several hundred predefined second-level domains. This function will be called a lot so it needs to be written as efficiently as possible. Bitwise hacks etc anything goes as long as it turns out fast. Set of suffixes is predetermined at compile-time and doesn't change. I am thinking of either implementing a variation of Rabin-Karp or write a tool that would generate a function with nested ifs and switches that would be custom tailored to specific set of suffixes. Since the application in question is 64-bit to speed up comparisons I could store suffixes of up to 8 bytes in length as const sorted array and do binary search within it. Are there any other reasonable options?

• Asynchronous Silverlight WCF callback

  I've created my own WCF service and I've successfully been able to talk to it via my Silverlight client. I ran into an interesting problem on my asynchronous callbacks though. When my callback is invoked, I can't update any UI controls with the dreaded invalid cross thread access Here's what my callback function looks like private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString(); } A quick google search showed me that I have to do this instead. private void GetTimeCallBack( object sender, Talk.ClientBase<IService>.ClientEventArgs e ) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke( () => lblDisplay.Text = e.Object.ToString() ); } Now everything works fine, but I wasn't expecting my callback to be running on a different thread. Will I always have to use the Dispatcher class in order to modify anything within my class or is this just limited to UI elements? I've not familiar with the Dispatcher class at all so I'm looking to understand it more.

  Hi, This might sound slightly confusing, but please bear with me. I'm trying to execute a copy of the Perl interpreter using Java's Runtime.exec(). However, it returned error code 9. After running the file a few times, the perl interpreter mysteriously started to return code 253 with no changes in my command at all. What does code 253 / code 9 mean? A google search for perl interpreter's exit codes turned up nothing. Where can I find a list of exit codes for the Perl interpreter? Thanks!

As suggested by the doc I created an intermediate entity called TeamMember.   I am assigned to a performance-tuning-debugging-troubleshooting task. Scenario: a multi-application environment running on several networked machines using databases. OS is Unix, DB is Oracle. Business logic is implemented across applications using synchronous/asynchronous communication. Applications are multi-user with several hundred call center users at peak time. User interfaces are web-based. Applications are third party, I can get access to developers and source code. I only have the production system and a functional test environment, no load test environment. Problem: bad performance! I need fast results. Management is going crazy. I got symptom examples like these: user interface actions taking minutes to complete. Seaching for a customer usually takes 6 seconds but an immediate subsequent search with same parameters may take 6 minutes. What would be your strategy for finding root causes?
