• Vim-like keyboard input in all text fields in all programs.

  So, I'm addicted to vim and often add lots of garbage to regular text fields when I try to use vim commands and am not in vim. I thought to myself, why can't vim be EVERYWHERE?! Then it struck me. Why not? Has anyone written a program that could redirect input/current text fields into a vim buffer so that one could use vim-style editing in things other than terminals and gVim? Redirect keyboard input? Alter a key-logger? Any thougts as to how it could be done?$wdw thoughtsA I did it again. I need serious help. Ideas, anyone?

• disable "SSL 2.0+ upgrade support" in nginx

  I evaluated the SSL credentials of my server with qualsys ssl page ( https://www.ssllabs.com/ssldb/index.html ) and found the entry "SSL 2.0+ upgrade support" being marked as yes. I want to disable this sslv2 handshake too. I searched around and found http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?2,104032m, which points to creating a openssl.cnf file. Have a naive question here. After creating the file, does one need to re-key his certificate for this to work ? Are there any other steps to follow ? I use nginx 1.0.11 and openssl "OpenSSL 1.0.0e-fips 6 Sep 2011". I have set ssl_ciphers in nginx to SSLv3 TLSv1;

The majority of papers for this year's conference have already been selected, however, there are some presentation slots still available so the OpenWorld team are giving you the chance to vote on which papers you want to see at this year's OpenWorld conference.The voting process has just opened and will close on June 20. • Bootcamp's "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys" switches back automatically

  I use Windows 7 in a Bootcamp partition on my iMac. I always check the option "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys", and when it's checked, everything works great. But recently, something switches this setting back to 'unchecked' every few minutes. I constantly have to open the Boot Camp Control Panel, uncheck the checkbox, check it again and click on 'Apply'. And five minutes later, the F2 key again controls the brightness of the screen and not the renaming of files in Explorer. This is driving me mad. What could be the cause of this? Is there a keystroke to switch this feature?

• Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic.   Recently I had to write a DAX formula containing a LASTDATE within the logical condition of a FILTER: I found that its behavior was not the one I expected and I further investigated. At the end, I wrote my findings in this article on SQLBI, which can be applied to any Time Intelligence function with a <dates> argument.The key point is that when you write LASTDATE( table[column] )in reality you obtain something like LASTDATE( CALCULATETABLE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )which converts an existing row context into a filter context.Thus, if you have something like FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( table[column] ) the FILTER will return all the rows of table, whereas you probably want to use FILTER( table, table[column] = LASTDATE( VALUES( table[column] ) ) )so that the existing filter context before executing FILTER is used to get the result from VALUES( table[column] ), avoiding the automatic expansion that would include a CALCULATETABLE that would hide the existing filter context.If after reading the article you want to get more insights, read the Jeffrey Wang's post here.In these days I'm speaking at SQLRally Nordic 2012 in Copenhagen and I will be in Cologne (Germany) next week for a SSAS Tabular Workshop, whereas Alberto will teach the same workshop in Amsterdam one week later. • Change Windows Server 2012 color scheme without Desktop Experience feature

  I have a Windows Server 2012, blue is nice... but I'd prefer a less "eyes puncher" color, maybe gray or black... I'm a GNU/Linux sysadmin and just the fact of have the entire GUI on a server is difficult for me, so I would avoid to install the Desktop Experience feature just to change the color of the GUI. I have read here: How to change color scheme in Windows Server 2012 That once I've changed color I may remove the Desktop Experience feature and the color will not be reverted to the original. So I guess there must be a way to change the color without install this feature pack, because looks like it just adds the control panel to set the color, but not the core feature, that maybe could be accessible within some registry key. Does someone have some idea?

• Duplication of code (backend and javascript - knockout)

  We have a new developer in our team. He seems a smart guy (he just came in so I cannot really judge). He started with implementing some small enhancements in the project (MVC3 web application using javascript - jquery and knockout). Let's say we have two values: A - quite complex calculation C - constant B = A + C On the screen there is value B and user can change it (normal texbox). When B changes, A changes as well because C is constant. So there is linear dependency between A and B. Now, all the calculations are done in the backend, but we need to recalculate A as user changes B (in js, I would use knockout). I thought about storing old A and B and when B changes by 10 then we know that new A will be old A + 10. He says this is dirty, because it's duplication of code (we make use of the fact that they are dependent and according to him that should be only in one place in our app). I understand it's not ideal, but making AJAX request after every key press seems a bit too much. It's a really small thing and I would not post if we haven't had long discussion about it. How do you deal with such problems? Also I can imagine that using knockout implies lots of calculations on the client side, which very often leads to duplication of the same calculations from the backend. Does anyone have links to some articles/thoughts on this topic?

• Ad-hoc connection between iPhone and Macbook Pro

  I sometimes find it useful to connect my iPhone to my Macbook Pro by creating an ad-hoc wireless network from the MBP and connecting to that from the iPhone. However, what I find is that sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. When it's not working the symptoms are usually that I see the ad-hoc SSID in the list of available networks on the iPhone, can connect to it from there (including entering my WEP key), and it shows up as the wifi network in use. However I don't get the wifi symbol in the taskbar (it remains as 3G) and attempting to use the connection (e.g. trying to connect to iTunes or Keynote using their respective Remote apps) fails saying that there is so wifi connection. I've tried rebooting both the iPhone and the MBP, recreating networks with different SSIDs and tried different channels - all to no avail! I'm especially puzzled that (a) sometimes it works just fine first time and (b) the Settings app seems to think its all connected fine. Is there anything else I should be trying?

Unfortunately, I do not remember what that key sequence was, our IT department is not responding, and the Planar web site is blocked by the content filtering firewall we have in place! What is the sequence to perform the reset? (For bonus geek-credit, what does the code mean... as if it indicates a blown component clearly a reset will not help me. ;-))

• What packages can i use to unroll a complete store with customer service?

  I havent bought the server yet (possible VPS) but i am thinking about using linux with apache and mono for asp.net support. I don't know much about this. What packages can i use together to have a store with customer support? What i like is 1) A store to purchase one item (its digital). More may be possible but they are likely to be addons which need the first item. 2) Have the the store send messages to my app which will generate registration key and deliver the digital item. 3) Create an account for that customer on a support site used for tickets 4) A Forum. I'd like a private forum for customers and may want their account to be disabled when their product license has expired. 5) A mailing list. I like non customers be able to subscribe to a list and i'd like to know if any customers are on it so i can send different emails to each if desired. Are there packages that make any of these easy? I dont mind writing glue code if i need to but i havent tried any stores, mailing list, ticket system but have installed a forum once long ago. My mail server will likely be through google apps.

• Unable to record sound from web browser (firefox / chromium ) using recordmydesktop

  I have to do some screencast tutorials and i am using recordmydesktop with gtk frontend to do it. I need to record also the sound and here is where i have found the problem. It took me some time, but now I can record the sound from almost every application in my desktop ... almost. I need to capture some sound from a web application using java, but when i load the page nothing appears in the playback tab of pavucontrol. I think this is the problem, because if there is no sound stream i think the recordmydesktop program thinks there is no sound to record ... the funny thing is that I can ear the sound in my speakers! I have tried with Firefox and Chromium with no success. Although I have been able to record youtube videos without problem, so it seems that java is the key here. Any suggestion or idea? P.S.: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with this configuration. ( if more information is needed please let me know) sight i cannot post images ... so I have an audigy2 sound card using Analog Stereo Output profile. • Can I automatically login to ssh using passwords from OS X keychain?

  I need to login to an ssh server which doesn't support key based authentication. And I don't want to type the passwords every time. I am using OS X Lion (10.7.2). I have added the passwords to the OS X keychain[1]. Now I can retrieve the password automatically from the keychain using /usr/bin/security, however I can't find a way to send this password to the ssh prompt. I also tried sshpass. However when I try to run it ssh exits with the following error: ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied, please try again. ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory Permission denied (publickey,password). • How do I prevent my filesystems from being mounted read-only after suspending?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on an SDHC card (only one ext2 partition, no swap). When I suspend using pm-suspend, my root filesystem is mounted read-only. I am currently "fixing" this with the following file: /etc/pm/sleep.d/99_make_disk_rw: #!/bin/sh mount -o remount,rw / But the disk is marked as needing an fsck on reboot. How can I prevent the filesystem from being mounted read-only or whatever is going wrong here. Update: It looks like it is getting mounted read-only because an error occurred. I have changed the mount options for / in /etc/fstab to noatime,nodiratime,errors=continue and it no longer mounts the SDHC card as read-only after it resumes. So the problem is happening when it suspends, not when it resumes as I had thought. I checked /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-4/power/persist and it is set to 1. So the SDHC card shouldn't appear disconnected to the OS (or more accurately it should recover from the disconnection without error).   I'm trying to get the mod_h264_streaming to work with my Apache2 server. I downloaded a precompiled version of the mod from here. I read here that all I have to do is extract the file to my modules folder, which I did, and add LoadModule h264_streaming_module modules/mod_h264_streaming.so AddHandler h264-streaming.extensions .mp4 to the httpd.conf, which I also did. However, I get this error when I restart Apache: Syntax error on line 173 of C:/Program Files (x86)/Apache Group/Apache2/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load C:/Program Files (x86)/Apache Group/Apache2/modules/mod_h264_streaming.so into server: The specified module could not be found. • How to increase the disk cache of Windows 7

  Under Windows 7 (64 bit), I'm reading through 9000 moderately sized files. In total, there is more than 200 MB of data. Using Java (JDK 1.6.21) I'm iterating over the files. The first 1400 or so go at full speed but then speed drops off to 4ms per file. It turns out that the main cost is incurred simply by opening the files. I'm opening the files using new FileInputStream (and of course closing them in time to avoid file leaks). After some investigating, I see that Windows' disk cache is using only 100 MB or so of RAM although I have 8 GiB available. I've tried increasing the cache size using the CacheSet tool but any values I provide are considered out of range. I've also tried enabling the LargeSystemCache registry key but (after rebooting) the CacheSet tool still indicates I'm using 100 MB of cache (and doesn't increase during the test run). Does anybody have any suggestions to "encourage" Windows 7 to cache my 9000 files?
