• ReadyNAS running slow

  We have a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ that we are using just for filestorage. While it appears to be running normally as a fileserver, the admin functions run incredibly slow. Sometimes, backups take so long that they don't finish before the next run is due to start, and if I try to look at the backup logs or download the system logs, all I get is the busy "whirling wheel", until I get a "System is busy message". Is this just the system being bolshy, or is it a sign of problems to come, and what can I do to diagnose them?

• ghc6 install trouble: hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid UTF-8 byte sequence)

  Having trouble installing ghc6. Here's what seems to be the relevant error that comes up when I try to (apt-get|aptitude) install ghc6: A package failed to install. Trying to recover: Setting up ghc6 (6.12.1-13ubuntu1) ... ghc-pkg: /home/opm/.ghc/i386-linux-6.12.1/package.conf.d/unix-compat-0.2-edefa7bced91ebe610d455bab466e200.conf: hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid UTF-8 byte sequence) (Here's the full output, if you're interested: http://paste.ubuntu.com/566475/ ) This still happens after apt-get clean and apt-get update. My searching around has not really helped me understand what's going on, except that it might be caused by a mismatch in locale. • Increased CF JVM max heap size and now CF service will not start

  So I went in to ColdFusion Administrator and increased my CF JVM max heap size, then I was told I would need to restart the service, so I stopped the service, and then tried to start it again and got the following error message: Windows could not start the ColdFusion 8 Application Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2. So I went to the Event Viewer application, then took a look at the Application log and saw an error that said: The ColdFusion 8 Application Server service could not be started. Check the server "coldfusion" log files for more information. So I went to my ColdFusion logs directory opened the server.log log file and I don't see anything useful in there or any of the other log files.. Any idea how I can change the JVM heap size back to what it was so that I can start CF again?

• Norton Security Suite Symantec Download Manager Error: "Error writing to disk"

  My broadband provider (Comcast) decided to switch their 'included with service' security suite from McAfee to Norton Security Suite. Their email directed me to a site that downloaded the Symantec Download Manager (NortonDL.exe) and that went fine. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and running this application pops up the standard User Account Control message and the software is correctly identified as coming from Symantec. I answer 'yes' to allow the software to install and upon launch immediately get an "Error writing to disk" error. I searched the Internet for this error, but mainly I find Comcast users complaining about the same issue with no resolution other than to call Symantec. I found no one suggesting a successful workaround and it appeared that most of the support calls took up to three hours. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Ideas? To be honest, I'm getting close to bagging this installation and just moving to Microsoft Security Essentials.

• Cisco ASA - Enable communication between same security level

• Access forbidden! using xampp on macosx 10.5

  I installed xampp back around January 2009, and CF8 to test coldfusion on my macbook (note: I do not think that this issue is related to CF, but only xampp). I only ever used the apache part of xampp, and this was working for over a year. In the last couple of months at the most I've started getting the following error message (even for none CF sites, and non .cfm pages, the error occurs for .html files..): Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. • kernel: journal commit I/O error

  I am having some problems with a Dell 1950 server. I am installing RHEL 4.6 along with Oracle and some other software on here. I am randomly getting an error message saying "kernel: journal commit I/O error" on my ssh session and on the monitor I have hooked up to the server I see an error scrolling by that says "EXT3-fs error (device sda5) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted." It has happened several times but never at the same point during the install. Actually, this last time the system was up and running and I was just trying to import a database into oracle. This has happened on several hard drives, so I'm pretty sure that is not the problem. This makes me think the raid controller is going bad. What do you guys think? ** UPDATE ** Pretty sure it was a bad hard drive. I threw another drive in the server and it's been running for about 48 hours with out problems.

• Mac Book Refuses to Boot

  I have a Macbook that has unfortunately died on me. I randomly got a pop up message that said I needed to restart my computer, and once I did, I was greeted with the blinking folder question mark start up screen. I've tried everything, including running Disk Utility repair and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. All of my data is backed up and safe, I just need my computer to start again. Before I go off and buy a new hard drive, I wanted to see if there is anything I might have forgotten.

• Internal users can't receive email sent by application

  We have an application server that hosts a CRM application. It is using SMTP on it's own server to send emails. If I send an email using the application to [email protected], it shows up in my inbox. If I send an email to [email protected], it never shows up. It doesn't matter what address I put in for @MyCompanyDomain.com, they never get through. Any email addresses outside our domain/firewall get through. We're using Exchange 2007 and when I look at the message tracking logs, the missing messages don't show up there, either. Is there something I need to configure in Exchange or the SMTP server on the application server? I can't figure out why emails get outside the firewall but internal emails never show up. • What does the email header "X-CAA-SPAM" refer to?

  I've got an application that sends out notification emails to users of the application (this is not spam; the information in these emails is solicited and useful, and is also a feature turned off by default and must be enabled by the user). The app is still in beta, and one of our testers reports that the notification emails are going to his junk mail folder in Outlook 2003. This is the only reported case of this, but I asked him to send me the email headers from the message, and I noticed that there is a header there labeled "X-CAA-SPAM" with a value of 00000 . I'm a programmer, so I'm fairly green in the world of successful automated emails - does anyone know if this header is the culprit? If not, any suggestions?

• iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected]. • Windows Photo Viewer needs more ram?

  Ok, so i went to open a picture with the Windows Photo Viewer (Default) application and it told me this: Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again. So looking at my 98% ram usage (thankyou VisualStudio x8 + SQL Server) I rebooted my computer. Now this is my load: And this is my hard-disk loadout: So now I go to load up that image again. SAME MESSAGE, what the heck? So apparantly 6gb isn't enough ram to open a 29k image that loads perfectly fine in MSPaint, Paint.NET, Photoshop It's a .png and it's not corrupt. So my question is: what gives?

• Windows 7 boot manager issue

  I was having windows 7 installed on my laptop, yesterday I tried to install Open Suse operating system. During its installation I chose a NTFS partition and formatted it to ext4 filesystem. During installation an error came that mount point cannot be created on this partition and I aborted the installation. They on reboot a message came BootMgr is missing. I then reinstalled the windows but on complete installation when setup rebooted the system then a blank screen came with a cursor blinking. I went through many forums and learnt may startup repairs and commands but it continues to hang up at a blank screen with cursor blinking. Reinstalling new windows 7 is also not doing any effect. I urgently need to repair my laptop for very important work. Please Help

• Lexmark X5650 doesn't print (scanning works)

  I want to use a Lexmark X5650 under Ubuntu. When I connect it via USB, Ubuntu recognizes the device, but can't find a driver. On the Lexmark support site, you can select "Unix/Linux" and then "Ubuntu 9.04", "9.10", "10.04" and "10.10". However, all versions lead to the same driver: lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz (Last updated: 2012-04-13). While installing this driver, the installer asks me to connect the device. As soon as I connect it via USB, Ubuntu now adds the printer automatically. So after the installation completed, I had 2 printers set up. But I can't print anything (I tried it with both printer configurations). Scanning works fine, though. So I guess the driver installation and the device connection are successful. When I try to print something, the print job is listed in the printing queue, but nothing happens. After some time, I get an error message which starts a debug wizard, but in the end it reads something like "Sorry, couldn't find the reason". I had several different error messages (unfortunately, I didn't record them), one was approximately like "printer cannot communicate with computer". Another said that my color ink was low (which is true, but black is full). Another said there was an input/output error. I tried it with Ubuntu 11.10. Because I read that some people had success with 10.04., I installed it in QEMU and installed the driver there, too. Same problem, though. I'd like to upgrade to 12.04, if it should work there for any reason, but I read that for some people this printer stopped working in 12.04 :/ So, it would be best if the printer would work in 12.04. If that's not possible, I'd be fine with starting a QEMU virtual machine with any GNU/Linux distribution that works with my printer.

• Is there any SMS/MMS server for LAN environment

  I am looking for a solution to send SMS/MMS message to mobile device from desktop or browser in LAN environment. As such, it is most probably using TCP/IP protocol to transmit request/response. The server may attach to a GSM device with SIM card attached. An server application would then start accept the request from any LAN client and convey the SMS/MMS to one or more recipients. The server may log all requests for further traffic analysis in later stage. Is there any solution that able to perform what I describe here. Please advice.

• Ubuntu 9.0.4 Presario S4000NX Fan Speed

  I recently install Ubuntu 9.0.4 on a Presario S4000NX and the CPU fan speed is kept at max. With Windows XP installed the fan speed would increase/decrease as required. I've tried to install lm-sensors and run the sensors-detect. It recommended that I load the modules which I did: smsc47m192 i2c-i801 When running sensor-detect it gave me this strange message: Trying family SMSC Found SMSC LPC47M15x/192/997 Super IO Fan Sensors (but not activated) Running the sensors command gives me a list of voltages and CPU and temperature but doesn't list any fans. After doing some Internet research I then tried to load the smsc47m1 module but I get the following error: FATAL: Error inserting smsc47m1 (/lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/smsc47m1.ko): no such device The file smsc47m1.ko does exist in the listed folder. • Blackberry Enterprise Server - Not running?

  My BlackBerry enterprise server recently stopped forwarding messages to devices. In fact, the server claims that the last time it communicated with all the devices associated with it, was on Thursday night (4 nights ago.) The catch is this, the Exchange server is running properly (or as properly as Exchange can run :) ) The SQL server seems to be running properly. And the Blackberry Enterprise server seems to be running correctly. Other than the fact that the server has not communicated with any device since Thursday, and the fact that I am not getting messages, there appears to be nothing wrong. How do I get these message to be forwarded to devices again? I have restarted the BES services in the order suggested by the BlackBerry folks to no avail.

• Acer Aspire 3820TG video card driver issue for Windows 8 Pro

  The model for Acer laptop is ATI mobility Radeon 5650. I am using Windows 8 Pro from MSDN. It was working fine until two days ago when Microsoft pushes an update. After the update, my video card stops working and I only see black screen after loading splash screen. I can go in Safe Mode. I tried to install driver from AMD website but it failed with error message "load detection driver failed". Anyone else have the same issue? Any idea how to solve this? I need to go in Win8 for my latest development.

• High level vs. low level programming. Do I really have to choose?

  Every once in a while I'm asked in interviews which I like the best- low level or high level. It seems to me that the implicit message is that they are both a specialty and they want to know which direction I'm heading. The trouble is, I seem to like both. Low level is extremely challenging and often requires a great deal of esoteric knowledge. High level is where all the sexy things happen: applications that people use directly, results that can be easily demonstrated (showed off) in a way that is accessible to everybody, and you get to work with really advanced tools and interact with new technologies. I would really love to do both, even if it means alternating between them (I doubt there are jobs that will let me do both simultaneously), but I'm guessing that the industry rewards specialists more than generalists. Will it really be problematic career wise if I never choose one over the other? Is it practical to alternate between the two in the sense that if I were to leave a job doing one of them, I should experience no "friction" trying to get a job doing the other (assuming I'm reasonably in the loop)? Are there career opportunities where you get to do both? Do I really have to choose one over the other?

• Sending single emails works, but sending to the same email in a distribution list is bounced

  I'm running an Exchange 2003 server on a Telstra Business internet connection (in Australia). I'm routing emails through the SMTP connecter, using the host smtp.telstrabusiness.com When users send single emails to a single recipient, the emails are sent correctly. However, when users send emails to a distribution list, they bounce back with: The message could not be delivered because the recipient's destination email system is unknown or invalid. Please check the address and try again, or contact your system administrator to verify connectivity to the email system of the recipient. One of the people in the list was able to recieve a single email from us just a few minutes afterwards, but did not recieve any of the email that should have come from the distribution list. Is there a way I can throttle the number of messages that Exchange will send at a time, so as not to appear as spam to Telstra?
