• Is WPF the Future of Windows UI Development?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

  I'm trying to choose some files to upload in Windows Phone 7 (in the emulator), and any attempt to ShowDialog of the OpenFileDialog leads to a Security Exception. The open file dialog is being called from an event on a button click but I get a SecurityException [FileDialog_ActiveScripting] Arguments: Debugging resource strings are unavailable. • On WindowsMobile, how can i tell what other processes are reserving shared memory space?

  On WindowMobile 6.1, I am using VirtualAlloc to reserve 2MB chunks, which will return me an address from the large shared memory area so allocations do not count against my per process virtual space. (doc here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa908768.aspx) However, on some devices i notice that I am not able to reserve memory after a certain point. VirtualAlloc will return NULL (getlasterror() says out of memory). The only explanation for this that I see is that another process has already reserved a bunch of memory and my process is therefore unable to. Any idea where I can find a tool to show me the shared mem region of a WM device? Thanks.

I am thinking about starting to develop using the .NET framework. Can anyone give me some advice? What do I need to begin? How similar is .NET to PHP? What is the relationship between ASP and .NET? • Windows Azure: need to know the data processing time

  I have stored some files in the form of blobs on azure and I have written an application that would access these blobs. When I host this application as a web role on azure, it works perfectly and I am happy with that. But now, I wanted to know “what is the query time taken to access each blob file?” I was searching for this through the Microsoft Azure Storage SLA and I found that for GetBlob request type, the maximum processing time should be within the product of 2 seconds multiplied by the number of MBs transferred in processing the request. I am still unclear. What is the actual processing time of my data query? How can I measure it? Can I be able to speed up the processing time? I can understand that the processing time depends on internet speed, location of the data center where my data is being stored, and location of data center where my application is being hosted. But still, will I be able to speed up my query?

• Insert an ajaxified Webpart into an existing MOSS site

  Hi everybody, I need to code a webpart which purpose is to asynchronously fetch some documents and display them into an existing page. Unfortunately I have to face a lot of rescritcions and my struggle to find a solution seems useleess so far. 1) I cannot use Microsoft asp.net ajax 2) I must use Jsonp because the called service (page, whatever...) is outside the site's domain. That's not a big problem. 3) I have no possibility to alter the existing page code, so I cannot reference an external library such as JQuery. 4) For the same reason I have no possibility to call my methods on the window.onLoad event, so here the question is: how can I be sure that everything is correctly loaded before triggering my ajax call? 5) Since several instances of the same webpart can be placed into the same page, can there be some possible conflicts among the various js functions?

I have a screen showing a list of users, and I display the details of the selected user on the right-hand side with editable textboxes. I then have a Save button which is DataBound, but I would only like this button to display when data has actually changed. ie - I need to check for "dirty data". • Asp.net TreeView control - maximum number of nodes

  I have a treeView control in ASP.NET page that will be loaded with up to 12,000 nodes in different levels. For example: Node 1 Node 1.1 … Node 1.400 Node 1.400.1 … Node 1.400.6400 Node 2 Node 3 Node 4 According to this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms529261.aspx the node limit is 1000. Is this correct or is it dependent on available memory(please specify value)? Assuming it is correct. is there any way to split the 4600 child nodes in say in chunks of 300 hundred? I am thinking that if dummy nodes are used (previous /next navigation) to navigate the chunks will easy the load of the html page. Sample code in C# will be greatly appreciated. (Or VB.NET if you can not translate it to C#)

• SharePoint Lookup Field 20 Item JS error

  Hi Everyone, I've got an issue with SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 which seems to be documented in various forms, but I haven't been able to find an answer to my seemingly simpler question. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointcustomization/thread/040533d2-c738-4ac2-b2d6-65a1602fa2d1 Essentially, we have a form with a lookup field to another SharePoint list. The lookup field has more than 20 items, and so SharePoint changes the type/behaviour of the field as per the standard behaviour. However, with my custom skin applied, clicking on this drop down causes a JS error from within the Core.js file, as described here: http://splitnut.blogspot.com/2009/06/lookup-fields-in-moss-javascript-error.html What I haven't been able to figure out is why this is only an issue when my custom master page is applied, and not the OOTB master pages. I've been through and tried to see what might cause this, but haven't been able to track down the cause of the behaviour. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

  Hi I wanted a function to find the greatest of a list of String values passed in. I want to invoke it as Select greatest('Abcd','Efgh','Zxy','EAD') from sql server. It should return Zxy. The number of parameters is variable.Incidentally it is very similar to oracle GREATEST function. So I wrote a very simple CLR function (Vs2008) and tried to deploy it. See below public partial class UserDefinedFunctions { [Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlFunction] public static SqlString Greatest(params SqlString[] p) { SqlString max=p[0]; foreach (string s in p) max = s.CompareTo(max) > 0 ? s : max; return max; } }; But when I try to compile or deploy it I get the following error Cannot find data type SqlString[]. Is it possible to satisfy my requirement using SQL CLR ?

• Remove registry key during uninstall

  Hello there. I have a simple C# application that allows users to specify that it should be (or should not be) started with Windows; it does so by setting (or deleting) a registry key (namely, ...\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\MyApplicationHere). I am using a VS setup project to create the installer for this program. I don't want the installer to create this key; it should only be created when the user selects the option from within the program. Here is the issue: I would like the uninstaller to delete this key if it exists, preferably without resorting to any sort of hackery; if there is a simple "built-in" solution I would love to hear it. • How to format a date as localized Short MonthDay string

  I would like to format a DateTime to a string containing the month name abbreviated and the date for use in axis labels in a graph. The default DateTime format strings do not contain abbreviated month. I guess there is no standard but I could take a substring of the first 3 characters of the month name and replace this into the MonthDay format.   I have a Silverlight solution that I want to create a build script for. I have a simple script that looks like this call "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\bin\vcvars32.bat" msbuild %CD%\V1\Incentive.sln /target:Rebuild /property:Configuration=DEBUG;WarningLevel=2 msbuild %CD%\UI\IncentiveUI.sln /target:Rebuild /property:Configuration=DEBUG;WarningLevel=2 pause However when I run this I get a failure, with some complaints about classes that are in a project with linked files: http://pastebin.com/JRE3tWfh This solution compiles fine in VS2008 so I can't figure out what the problem is. I have to guess something is wrong with the way I am using msbuild here.

Before, with ReportViewer 2008 and 2005, all the supported laguages were available on the MS downloads site. I can't seem to find them for the RC of 2010 -- are they available anywhere? In this mode ListView control is shifted left, and CheckBoxes are covered by left edge How to solve this issue, or at least how is possible to shift rendering of control to the right. My OS is Windows XP Service Pack 3. It looks like that ListView items with Groups and CheckBoxes shows correctly only when View set to Details.

And I can no longer debug on my development machine using the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio. I need Visual Studio and its ASP.NET Development Server to recognize the new .NET Framework 4 requestValidationMode attribute. How can I debug my application in .NET 4?   When I turn on Code Coverage in my test settings, on a project that references the Unity DI container I get the following error: Cannot initialize the ASP.NET project '{Project Name}'. The event log specifies the following reason: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=2.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Strong name signature could not be verified. How do I get around this issue? I am running Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate on a Windows 7 X64 machine.

• Project tracking/management tool

  Which project tracking tool do you use? Does it allow programmers to bill hours worked to projects/tasks? Does it allow to track items promised vs. items delivered? Does it allow to forecast personnel needs when you have only a ballpark estimate of how many hours you are going to need for different task types? Does it integrate with your bug tracker? [Mantis] Does it integrate with your source control tool? [Subversion] Does it allow you to easily publish your schedule and current priorities to team members? Does it produce reports on any or all of the above? Am I even right in calling a tool that does those things a "Project tracking/management tool"? What does your tool have that makes you love it and use it every day? I don't really care about Gantt charts. I find Microsoft Project quite clunky for this needs (although I'm hardly an expert user).

  My understanding of expression tree is : Expression trees are in-memory representation of expression like arithmetic or boolean expression.The expressions are stored into the parsed tree.so we can easily transalate into any other language. Linq to SQL uses expression tree.Normally in LINQ to SQL query the compiler translates it into parsed expression trees.These are passed to Sql Server as T-SQL Statements.The Sql server executes the T-SQL query and sends down the result back.That is why when you execute LINQ to SQL you gets IQueryable<T> not IEnumetrable<T>.Because IQuerybale contains public IQueryable:IEnumerable { Type Element {get;} Expression Expression {get;} IQueryaleProvider Provider {get;} } Questions : Microsoft uses Expression trees to play with LINQ-to-Sql.What are the different ways can i use expression trees to boost my code. Apart from LINQ to SQL,Linq to amazon ,who used expression trees in their applications? Linq to Object return IEnumerable,Linq to SQL return IQueryable ,What does LINQ to XML return?
