  • when to upgrade server to include more cores, versus more processors, versus additional server?

    The server hosting market is separated into single, double, qual, etc., processors, where each processor has several cores, or CPUs. My company will offer a Linux-based web application that relies on an Apache web server and a middle tier for business logic. The middle tier is used to crunch math, and return result to a client. Many clients may access the application simultaneously. The company will start with one processor having 4 cores. I'm trying to understand how the app uses the cores and then how to scale the application as business grows, in terms of servers/processors/cores. For example, I'd assume initially one core would be used for Apache, and the other 3 used to process client's requests for math crunching... Question 1: does that mean, with the 3 cores available, I can handle 3 separate client requests simultaneously (e.g. 1 for each of 3 cores)? I mean, except for the shared RAM, is this effectively like having 3 individual machines (from pt of view or processing client requests simulaneously)? Or, only one client's request may be processed at any one time, but that client's request is divided up into up to 3 cores depending on the type of process running that does the math crunching and whether or not it can take advantage of multi threading (so the # of cores impacts how fast any one client request completes)? I'm confused about what the cores mean to the application here. Question 2: As the business grows and more client requests need to be processed, should the server be upgraded to (A) a new machine with more cores, (B) a new machine with two processors, 4 cores each, or (C) keep the original server and add another server with a single processor? Which route provides the most efficient way to scale the application, in terms of processing more client requests per time interval? Is the choice, for example, limited by RAM (when you need more RAM than box can handle it's time to add another server), or something else? Question 3: Is the total number of client requests processed simultaneously equal to the number of cores times the number of servers (minus the one core for Apache)?

The hand is represented by an integer (32 bits == 32 cards): create table pref_hand ( id varchar(32) references pref_users, hand integer not NULL check (hand > 0), stamp timestamp default current_timestamp ); As the players are playing constantly and that data isn't important (just a gimmick to be displayed at player profile pages) and I don't want my database to grow too quickly, I'd like to keep only up to 10 records per player id. So I'm trying to declare this PL/PgSQL procedure: create or replace function pref_update_game(_id varchar, _hand integer) returns void as $BODY$ begin delete from pref_hand offset 10 where id=_id order by stamp; insert into pref_hand (id, hand) values (_id, _hand); end; $BODY$ language plpgsql; but unfortunately this fails with: ERROR: syntax error at or near "offset" because delete doesn't support offset.     In MS SQL Server Management Studio 2005, running this code EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR)) gives this error: Incorrect syntax near 'CAST' However, if I do this, it works: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC(@temp) I found an explanation here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1044831/t-sql-cannot-pass-concatenated-string-as-argument-to-stored-procedure According to the accepted answer, EXEC can take a local variable or a value as its argument, but not an expression. However, if that's the case, why does this work: DECLARE @temp VARCHAR(4000) SET @temp = CAST(3 AS VARCHAR) EXEC('SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp) 'SELECT * FROM employees WHERE employeeID = ' + @temp sure looks like an expression to me, but the code executes with no errors.

    I'm probably going about this the wrong way but... I’ve added a field to the User Profile called profile_real_name which is required by the user. Is there a way to access the details in CCK? For example in CCK when creating a new field I can access the user’s username with the ‘User reference’ Field type and setting the ‘Widget type’ to ‘Autocomplete text field’.   • What is the solution to enable Dymo Turbo 400 Label Printer to work on Win 7 / 64-bit?

    It's Christmas time and time for printing labels for all those Christmas cards. I've upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit from XP. I've been unsuccessfully attempting to get the connected Dymo 400 Turbo label USB printer to work again. The latest manufacturer drivers have been successfully loaded and installed. The drivers are supposed to work on Windows 7/64-bit. The Win 7 system(s) in question are patched and up-to-date on that score. The Windows Update site responds with a driver when the USB cable is connected to this printer. The printer queue seems to be established correctly. What happens is that I submit a job to the printer (either using the DYMO s/w or not), it delays for a period of time, and then I get the message 'printing error'. Can't seem to locate the appropriate error in the new and improved event log. Several combinations of rebooting, re-installation and power cycling components fail to make the printer work. Sometimes during some type of reset it spits out the last thing to be submitted, but that seems intermittent. I have tried different USB cables and different USB (2.X) ports as well. I have run the Windows 7 troubleshooter it tries to fix the problem but alas it doesn't. Interestingly, trying the USB printer (and its associated manufacturer drivers and s/w) on another Windows 7 64-bit system has the identical failures noticed on the original system. I did not find anything on the manufacturers' site concerning this problem. The printer has no hardware problems or issues.

  • Windows 7 boot animation slows down startup by default?

    I just upgraded my HDD to an SSD drive. I am running a completely fresh install and enjoy the short boot time. I tweaked the startup to be as fast as I could by removing unneeded apps and such. Nor am I running a solid desktop background (which causes a 30-sec startup delay). I have a 2.1ghz 64 bit laptop with 4 gigs of ram, so it's not a liquid-cooled speed monster, but I checked some super high end PC boot vids on YouTube and noticed that they startup in almost the same time as my machine. I also noticed that the glowing Windows 7 animation plays all the way no matter how fast the PC is. I turned off the animation, and the startup time is unchanged. I turned on verbose startup info and noticed that it runs until the very end, where it looks like it just sits there for no reason waiting for something to happen for a few seconds. So now I think that the Windows 7 startup animation has a timer built into it that forces the computer to wait for no other reason than to play the full animation. Super-fast XP boot vids on YouTube seem to start much faster (and not just because they "have less to load"). Am I imagining things? My question is: How can I turn off not just the animation, but the timer for the animation. Here is a vid that tipped me off, I have no relation to the poster.   • Is it possible to record a screen-video from a VNC server?

    I have a computer that's running VNC server. I would like to record a video of what's going on on this computer, if possible without installing additional software on that computer. Is there a program that can connect to the VNC server port and instead of displaying the screen save it to an (e.g. AVI) video file? Background: One of our customers sometimes has problems with the software he bought from us when he's performing a complex procedure. To help him, we offered that someone (a service technician or programmer) watches what he's doing during that procedure to find out if he's doing something wrong or if there's a bug in the software. Currently, this is done live via VNC. That has a few disadvantages: The service technician has to be in the office at the time. As the customers are in different time zones, that can be in the middle of the night. If the service technician forgets something or doesn't notice something, it's lost. There's no way to see what happened again. Only a single computer can be watched by one service technician at a time. I know I could install normal screen-grab software on the computer, but we're talking about an embedded system with limited RAM, CPU, HDD space, so installing something new is not an easy decision. And VNC is already there. I could of course open a VNC client on some office PC and capture that PC's screen, but I can only record one remote computer that way. I often have to watch up to 8 screens in parallel. (And I don't think that screen-grabbing VNC would improve image quality, either.)

  • Android 4.0.3 OpengL ES 2.0 issue

    i develop live wallpapers using Opengl ES 2.0 engine. My wallapapers run smooth on 2.x Android Devices , but in 4.03 i see some strange things. 1st seconds (maybe a minute max) lwp runs smooth , but after that starts dropping frames especially when objects passing near camera allmost crashes. But no error on eclipse Log. I watched Eclipse log from the begining of loading the lwp to the point of dropping frames. I ve seen that on My LG optimus 2X , and my Samsung Galaxy S2. Any Idea what to check , or what is going on?? UPDATE i just noticed that changing render mode from dirty to continuously fixed the problem , but until screen orientation changes , or goes of and on. after that renderer freaks out.

  • WD Caviar Green Extremely Slow

    I am encountering a really weird problem on my WD Caviar Green HDD. Well first of all I have 2 HDDs on my Desktop, one 160GB Seagate holding my Win7 Ultimate x64 and the problematic one, WD 1.5 Caviar Green for storage purpose. My problem is kinda weird, when I transfer files from my Seagate(C:) to my WD (D:) the speed is good (50-60MB/s). Then the problem arises when I transfer too "many" large files, the transfer speed would go straight down to kilobytes/s. Well after I cancelled the transfer and access my D:, even entering a folder requires loading for like 10 seconds. Such problem not only arises when I am transferring files to my D:, it seems like my WD can't handle much activities. For instance, last time I installed my game on D: and I would face much lag after playing for some time. When the same game is installed on C: no problem arises. Does anyone knows what is the problem? P/S: There was one temporary solution that I used to tried. After the "situation" occurs, I tried to access as many folders on D: as I can and let it load, repeating such actions and giving it some time bring the D: back to speedy transfer. However, large transfers would causes the situation to happen again. Does it have something to do with cache whatsoever?

  • Application.Idle causes high CPU usage

    Hello, I use the Application.Idle event to handle toolbar status (enable/disable) etc. quite extensively. As I'm beta testing Norton AntiVirus 2011, it brought to my attention that my app that I'm developing triggered a high CPU usage warning on at least one CPU. Sure enough, I opened the task manager and watched one of the four CPU's (quad core system) go to near 100%. I thought Application.Idle was the way to handle things when the application wasn't performing CPU tasks. Why is Application.Idle spiking the CPU? Here is how I attach to the event: AddHandler Application.Idle, AddressOf OnAppIdle Been using Application.Idle for a long time, never knew it would have this issue. Using VS 2010 .NET 4 Thank you.
