• Computer won't go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. I ran it for several hours after that. If I have a TV program scheduled to record when I select standby I get a window (the Pinnacle TV software) asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes, never going into standby. I added that detail as it shows the standby process is starting. [This problem also happens if a TV program is not scheduled, so the scheduler task in not running/in memory. This problem happens regardless of whether I'm not watching TV. This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running (it usually isn't, I'm using Pinnacle to watch TV).] I looked at "How to troubleshoot hibernation and standby issues in Windows XP" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907477 - ACPI is enabled, and "standby" is an option in "Power Options Properties." So it appears to be setup correctly. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• How can I allow the Xbox 360 to browse movies on a network drive?

  I've always been able to stream movies stored on my Windows 7 computer's local hard drive to the Xbox 360 with no problems. A few weeks ago, though, I got a Seagate Dockstar NAS device and moved my movies to it. Ever since then, I can't seem them in the Xbox. I've tried several different things. When I try to add the mapped drive to the Media Player library, it says that it can't share the files. (I don't have any security on the NAS drive). I've tried creating a symlink to a local drive, but that doesn't help. Neither does adding the UNC path directly. The Dockstar seems to have its own Xbox share capability, but it doesn't respect my folder structure - it brings over every video file on the drive in a single list, including several hundred home videos that aren't playable on the Xbox. Is there any way to use Media Player (or the Zune software) to share files stored on a NAS drive? Barring this, is there a lightweight, free server that will allow me to share these files while maintaining my folder structure?

• Obtaining clear cable signal with Hauppage 1191-950Q TV Tuner

  I bought a Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-950Q TV Tuner a while back, and I am attempting to use it to watch TV in Windows Media Center. I do not have cable TV, however I used to have Comcast. Through experimentation, I found that connecting my coax cable into my TV, I was able to view television (i.e. 2-1 = CBS, 5-1 = NBC, etc). This also works on a second TV I use in another room. When I connect the coax cable to my TV Tuner stick and scan TV channels in Windows Media Center, it only picks up 1 station (like 81 or something). My only conclusion on this is somehow the hardware in the television is decrypting a signal that the TV tuner stick is not able to. Is that possible? Should I try a different TV tuner? Any assistance would be appreciated. I also bought a Terk HD Indoor Antenna but my reception has been flakey, so I would rather go this route if possible.

  I'm debugging a site that has problems with element positioning when printing (I have a separate print.css file linked by a link element with the media="print" attribute). This problem only occurs in IE7 and IE8. What I'm looking for is a way to view the page using the print media type, but while still having IE8's developer tools available to view element details and edit in real-time, etc. The function I'm looking for would be similar to the "Display CSS by Media Type" feature in Chris Pederick's Web Developer Extension for Firefox. (But this problem doesn't occur in firefox...nor in safari, or even in IE6.)

• How to read tags out of m4a files in .NET?

  I've got some heavily modified code that ultimately came from the Windows Media SDK that works great for reading tags out of MP3 and WMV files. Somewhere along the line, Windows Media Player added support for .m4a files (was it in Windows 7?) but the Windows Media API doesn't seem to reflect that addition (or at least IWMMetadataEditor2::OpenEx pukes on an .m4a file). What would be some good C# code or links on how to dig meta data tags out of m4a files? (Google has come up dry on the C# front.) UPDATE AtomicParsley did indeed end being the best approach. Since that code is a command line tool however I ended up having to create a managed wrapper around some of its functionality in order to use in-process. It is posted on google code if anyone else needs such a thing.

  Hi, I am trying to encode a .mp4 to a .flv I've tried using the Adobe Media Encoder but the video is lost in the conversion process, leaving me a black screen and some audio. I have yet to find something that can do this successfully for free. I found ffmpeg, which looks promising... but I can't figure out how to get it to work. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. -Thanks.

• Is there a modern Windows FLAC encoder application? [closed]

  I've decided I want to use FLAC for my music library, but I'm not sure what I should be using to encode the FLAC files. The latest release on flac.sourceforge.net is 5 years old, as are all of the other applications shown on the download page. Googling for updated encoders has just led me back to the same 5 year old apps. Is there a more up-to-date FLAC encoder, either a Windows GUI or Windows CLI app?

• Adobe Flex Transparency not working on Button icon

  I am fairly inexperienced with Flex, but my googling has retrieved nothing to suggest this is an obvious question. I have an mx:Button with an Icon on it that is a png file with a transparent background, as below, however the transparency is not working, and the icon is painted with a white background. <mx:Button label="Button" icon="@Embed(source='images/clearTracks.png')"/> I have seen how to use a ByteArrayImage to get a transparency working on an image, but this technique doesn't appear available for a button's icon property.

• Social Media Talk: Facebook, Really?? How Has It Become This Popular??

  If you have read some of my previous posts over the past few years either here or on my personal blog David's Journal on Tap you will know I am a Social Media enthusiast. I use various social media sites everday in both my work and personal life. I was surprised to read today on Mashable.com that Facebook now Commands 41% of Social Media Trafic. When I think of the Social Media sites I use most, the sites that jump into my mind first are LinkedIn, Blogging and Twitter. I do use Facebook in both work and in my personal life but on the list of sites I use it probably ranks closer to the bottom of the list rather than the top. I know Facebook is engrained in everything these days - but really I am not a huge Facebook fan - and I am finding that over the past 3-6 months my interest in Facebook is going down rather than up. From a work perspective - SM sites let me connect with candidates and communities and they help me talk about the things that I am doing here at Oracle. From a personal perspective SM sites let me keep in touch with friends and family both here and overseas in a really simple and easy way. Sites like LinkedIn give me a great way to proactively talk to both active and passive candidates. Twitter is fantastic to keep in touch with industry trends and keep up to date on the latest trending topics as well as follow conversations about whatever keyword you want to follow. Blogging lets me share my thoughts and ideas with others and while FB does have some great benefits I don't think the benefits outweigh the negatives of using FB. I use TweetDeck to keep track of my twitter feeds, the latest LinkedIn updates and Facebook updates. Tweetdeck is a great tool as it consolidates these 3 SM sites for me and I can quickly scan to see the latest news on any of them. From what I have seen from Facebook it looks like 70%-80% of people are using FB to grow their farm on farmville, start a mafia war on mafiawars or read their horoscope, check their love percentage, etc...... In between all these "updates" every now and again you do see a real update from someone who actually has something to say but there is so much "white noise" on FB from all the games and apps that is hard to see the real messages from all the 'games' information. I don't like having to scroll through what seems likes pages of farmville updates only to get one real piece of information. For me this is where FB's value really drops off. While I use SM everyday I try to use SM effectively. Sifting through so much noise is not effective and really I am not all that interested in Farmville, MafiaWars or any similar game/app. But what about Groups and Facebook Ads?? Groups are ok, but I am not sure I would call them SM game changers - yes there is a group for everything out there, but a group whether it is on FB or not is only as good as the community that supports and participates in it. Many of the Groups on FB (and elsewhere) are set up and never used or promoted by the moderator. I have heard that FB ads do have an impact, and I have not really looked at them - the question of cost jumps and return on investment comes to my mind though. FB does have some benefits, it is a great way to keep in touch with people and a great way to talk to others. I think it would have been interesting to see a different statistic measuring how effective that 41% of Social Media Traffic via FB really is or is it just a case of more people jumping online to play games. To me FB does not equal SM effectiveness, at the moment it is a tool that I sometimes need to use as opposed to want to use. • Running a Java program with a .dll from Adobe AIR's native process

  I would like to be able to operate a scanner from my AIR application. Since there's no support for this natively, I'm trying to use the NativeProcess class to start a jar file that can run the scanner. The Java code is using the JTwain library to operate the scanner. The Java application runs fine by itself, and the AIR application can start and communicate with the Java application. The problem seems to be that any time I attempt to use a function from JTwain (which relies on the JTwain.dll), the application dies IF AIR STARTED IT. I'm not sure if there's some limit about referencing dll files from the native process or what.   While I was trying to change the brightness and contrast of Image using C#, but I could not get success in changing the contrast of the Image. May I expect any support from here. • Adobe AIR: touch screen doesn't trigger mouse down event correctly

  i have designed a gaming kiosk app in as3 i am using it on a Sony vaio l pc (like hp's touchsmarts) in windows 7 the app doesn't need any multi-touch gestures (only single touch clicks and drags) so i am using mouse events everything is fine (including mouse click and move events) except that a single touch to the screen (with no move) doesn't fire a mouse down. it is fired only after a small move of the finger outside the app, on my desktop, i see that the small windows 7 cursor jumps immediately to where a finger is placed, meaning this issue isn't a hardware or a windows problem but rather how internally the flash app receives "translated" touch-to-mouse events from the os. for example, in a windows Solitaire game, a simple touch to the screen immediately highlights the touched card. in my app, a button will change to the down state only if i touch it and also move my finger slightly (click events - down and up - are triggered fine) shouldn't the MOUSE_DOWN event trigger exactly like how a TOUCH_BEGIN would in the new touchevent class? any ideas?

  My system has an atom N270 + intel i915 graphic card. Under Windows I can enjoy 720p bigbuckbunny youtube video fullscreen without any trouble. Under Ubuntu 12.04 I have laggy and choppy fullscreen video and choppy video when not fullscreen. I've seen that under ubuntu the cpu is almost always at 100% use. What I must do in order to have videos playing well under ubuntu ? • Problems with mounting .ISO files

  I'm using Precise, with GNOME. I've attempted to install some retro, multi-cd games (KOTOR1) via .ISO images and WINE, but I can't get the ISO's to mount correctly. First I tried GMountISO, which showed a read-only warning but worked - until I went to unmount. When the installation program asked for CD 2 I couldn't unmount from the /cdrom folder because neither GMountISO or umount from terminal could detect the mount. After a reboot, I changed to GISOMount (different somehow, I guess?), but when I attempt to mount the ISO I get an error window explaining the syntax of the mount command and, which is also what I get when I attempt to use mount from terminal. After checking /media from terminal on a lark I see the disc mounted there twice over, but umount won't recognize it, even when I specify the full path sudo umount /media/KOTOR_1.iso. It cleared up upon reboot. Can someone please assist? UPDATE :: Thanks for the quick response. What's weird, is the images are like stuck in limbo...   We are migrating application from Delphi to Flex (Air) that plays mp3 files from random access big file. it has positions and sizes to extract mp3 data to FileStream-MemoryStream and then we use bass.dll to play it from memory stream. Now I have to play those same mp3's in flex but I am not sure how...   I cant seem to get my JSON file to work when pulling it in from another domain using JQuerys getJSON. I have placed the callback part at the end of the url but still have no joy. Firebug tells me its a cross domain issue, which seems to make sense as if I place the json file locally the below code (excluding the ?jsoncallback=? works fine) Heres the Jquery part • Adobe Flex Combobox as itemrenderer

  I have a flex combobox as a datagrid itemrenderer. However, after selecting an item in the combobox, its necessary to click out of the combo (i.e. into another cell or elsewhere in the app) for the value to be committed to the combo. Prior to this, the combo sits 'proud' of the datagrid and the value hasnt actually been committed. Is there a way to force the value to be immediately committed after an item has been selected and for the combo to 'lose focus'?

• Adobe Flex, loading a remote swf

  I have a flex app running on my server. I have had a request from some clients to have the swf loaded on their server, so that their customers dont have to be transferred to my server to login; i.e. from the user's point of view it looks like they are logging in from theirsite.com instead of mysite.com I tried something really simple, and that was to give them a html wrapper to host on their site. The only modification that I made was to change the "src" var to: "src", "https://www.mysite.com/app/myapp.swf" and embed src="https://www.mysite.com/app/myapp.swf" To my surprise, this worked perfectly. And best of all, the service calls still seem to come from mysite.com, so I dont have to bother with modifying the crossdomain.xml file. All good it seems. Are there any issues or downsides to the above that I should be aware of?

• Adobe Flex + Air or Java + JavaFX 2.0?

  Hey guys! I'm looking into a cloud-computing related career. I've recently graduated from school and have been meaning to study a new programming language. From what I understand, I need to get into RIA development for this. Flex and Java have certainly caught my attention, but I am torn as to whether focus on Flex then continue with Air, or study Java first and see how JavaFX 2.0 pans out, and then continue with Flex thereafter. I've no previous experience with either, and I'm sort of giving myself something like two years or so to learn. What do guys think? Thanks for the feedback! :)
