• Issues installing synapse launcher

  I am trying to install synapse launcher on my desktop . I am using these two commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install synapse However I am getting an error with the second command saying E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I presume this has something to do with my connection to the hosting servers. But what I don't understand is the fact that synaptic is working it just seems to be something about that ppa. I don't know what I am doing wrong as the commands are widely suggested around the web, But they don't seem to work for me! I would greatly appreciate some advice on this as it is proving to be very frustrating. Many thanks, George

Stay or Quit The simple answer is that you now have two options – stay where you are or move on to a new job.  Even though you might now be smarter than you have ever felt before, this can still be a tough decision to make.  You feel extra trained and ready for a promotion or a raise, but you and your employer might not see eye to eye on this issue.  The logical conclusion is to go on a job hunt, but that might not be the most ethical thing to do. Click Image to Enlarge Manager’s Perspective Click Image to Enlarge Try to see the issue from your manager’s perspective.  You feel that you have just spent a lot of time and energy getting trained, and you should be rewarded.  But they have invested their time and energy in you.  They might see the training as a way to help you complete the goals they require from you, or as a way to help you complete tasks that will ultimately end in a reward or promotion. Moral Compass As in most cases, honesty is the best policy.  Be open with your manager about your expectations, and ask them to explain their goals.  When there is open and honest communication, everyone can walk away happy.  If you’re unable to discuss with your manager for one reason or another, just try to keep the company policy in mind and follow your own moral compass.  If all else fails, and your company is unwilling to make allowances for your new value, offer to pay the company back for the training before moving on your way. Whether you stay at your old job or move on to a new one, you are still faced with the question of what you’re going to do with all your new knowledge.  If you feel comfortable, offer to train others around you who are interested in the same subject.  This can look very good on your resume, and if you are working in a team environment it is sure to help you in the long run! What Next? You can even offer to train other trainers at the company – managers, those above you, or even report back to your original trainer about how your education is helping you in the work place.  Obviously this should be completely voluntary on the trainer’s part.  Taking advice from a “newbie” may not be their favorite idea, but it could also show the company that you are open to expanding your horizons and being helpful to everyone around you. Last in Line for Opportunity Click Image to Enlarge At this time, let us address a subject related to training and what to do with it – what if you are always overlooked for training?  This can as thorny a problem as receiving training in the first place.  The best advice is to let your supervisors know that you are always open to training and very interested in certain topics.  If you are consistently passed over, be patient.  Your turn will probably come, but the company as a whole has to focus on other problems at the moment.  If you feel that there are more personal issues at play, be sure to bring this up with your supervisor in a calm and professional manager so that everything can be worked out best for both parties. You, Yourself and Your Future! If all else fails, offer to pay for training yourself.  Perhaps money problems are at the root of being passed over.  Even if there are other reasons, offering to pay your own way shows your dedication and could work out well for you in the long run.  Always remember – in life you have to go out and make your own way, you cannot always sit and wait for things to land in your lap.   Impressive trailers for your game can really help show players how awesome your game is, but I'm having trouble finding tips that describe how to create a great trailer. I would like to learn about the best way to decide trailer length, structure, music/sound, and content. Basically, what parts of my game do I show in a trailer, how should the scenes be organized, and how would you do the sound? Any advice on things to avoid would be great as well; for example, I read that splicing some video, switching to a screen with text, switching back to video, etc., probably isn't the best way to do it. • Copyright notices/disclaimers in source files

  It's a common practice to place copyright notices, various legal disclaimers and sometimes even full license agreements in each source file of an open-source project. Is this really necessary for a (1) open-source project and (2) closed-source project? What are you trying to achieve or prevent by putting these notices in source files? I understand it's a legal question and I doubt we can get a fully competent answer here at programmers.SO (it's for programmers, isn't it?) What would also be interesting to hear is, when you put legal stuff in your source files, is it because "everyone does it" or you got legal advice? What was the reasoning?

• Can I perform a distribution upgrade without rebooting?

  Hi, I would, ideally, like to run a distribution upgrade that doesn't end in a complete reboot of the machine (owing to an irritation in my hardware that requires a period of disconnection from the power supply before my SSD can be detected). What would be the procedure for doing this from a desktop environment? I would image: dist-upgrade shutdown all graphical services restart X I'd appreciate any advice (particularly on the exact procedure for step 2, if this correct). NB. • OpenGL ES 2.0: Filtering Polygons within VBO

  Say, I send 10 polygon pairs (one polygon pair == one 2d sprite == one rectangle == two triangles) into OpenGL ES 2.0 VBO. The 10 polygon pairs represent one animated 2D object consisting of 10 frames. The 10 frames, of course, can not be rendered all at the same time, but will be rendered in particular order to make up smooth animation. Would you have an advice, how to pick up proper polygon pair for rendering (4 vertices) inside Vertex Shader from the VBO? Creating separate VBO for each frame would end up with thousands of VBOs, which is not the right way of doing it. I use OpenGL ES 2.0, and VBOs for both Vertices and Indices.

• Ipod won't mount on Banshee, causes it to crash

  Since updating to Ubuntu 12.10 I can't put Music on my iPod anymore, Banshee does not recognize it and crashes after about 10 seconds. I was going to post the output of 'banshee' in the Terminal, but my whole Laptop is messing up now, it is reluctant to open any application right now. Anyway, my iPod is running ios 4.2 and it has been like that for quite some time. Never been a problem before. I could really use some advice here. Edit: And when I unplug the iPod and put it back in again, I get three error messages: 1) Unable to Open a Folder for Documents on Ipod Cache invalid, retry (internally handled) 2)Unable to open a folder for iPod Timeout was reached 3)Unable to mount iPod Location is already mounted. Nothing working atm.

• How to make FN keys working on Asus G75 laptop

  I just bought a Asus G75 and I cannot make the FN keys working. I only found how to control the brightness (http://askubuntu.com/questions/126441/brightness-controls-doesnt-work-on-a-macbook-pro-5-5-ubuntu-12-04-lts) but the other keys are not recognized. I didn't know much things about key binding before digging, but I tried : testing with xev : no output... testing with keymap : no output... modprobe asus-laptop : FATAL: Error inserting asus_laptop (/lib/modules/3.2.0-25-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/asus-laptop.ko): No such device (not sure what that means) modprobe asus-nb-wmi : FATAL: Error inserting asus_nb_wmi (/lib/modules/3.2.0-25-generic/drivers/platform/x86/asus-nb-wmi.ko): No such device (not sure what that means) Thanks for your advice David

  I'm considering adding robots "noindex, follow" tags to the very numerous product data pages that are linked from the product style pages in our online store.   PowerPoint is a great tool for conference (large audience) presentations, which is the context for the advice below.   I plan on seeking a career in web development and I'm about two semesters away from graduating with a CIS degree. Although I'm very satisfied with my choice of degree, I'm concerned that I may be lacking knowledge in a few areas because of not majoring in computer science. The programming side of things is no problem for me, I'm just wondering to what extent data structures/theory/etc. might benefit me to learn over spending more time with hands-on programming... and also what aspects of C.S. would be most appropriate to look into you would think would be most applicable to web development. • Why is the tooltip hiding Dash Search on 12.04?

  Can I disable the tooltip shown at the side of the Launcher icon when hovered by the mouse. These are nice, but I want to disable them, because when I press "Dash Home" button on the launcher, then want to write something on the dash, I can't see the letters because of the tooltip. How can I disable the Unity tooltip from hiding search string in dash? I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I have given a screenshot of the launcher. My problem is basically with this Update 1 I have given advice to follow this answer in chat discussion, but nothing has changed. Update 2 As an answer suggests, I updated unity to the latest version. It is now unity 5.12.0. as the below output indicates $ unity --version unity 5.12.0

• javascript game loop and game update design

  There is a main game loop in my program, which calls game update every frame. However, to make better animation and better control, there is a need to implement a function like updateEveryNFrames(n, func). I am considering implementing a counter for each update. The counter will be added by one each frame. The update function will be invoked according to the counter % n. For example, in a sequence of sprites animation, I can use the above function to control the speed of the animation. Can some give some advice or other solutions?

  I need a bit of advice from you developers who deal with cross-platform applications (specifically programs with a GUI). I will be creating an application soon that needs to be cross-platform and so I have done some preliminary research on two different frameworks: JavaFX 2.0 and Qt. Honestly, both would more than suit my needs. So then I asked myself why I would choose one over the other (SPOILER ALERT: I don't know the answer :P ). I do know that JavaFX 2.0 is rather new (as of 2012) and is not fully supported across platforms, but it will be eventually. The question I pose is this: which one of these would you use for a cross-platform application, and what criteria did you look at when making that decision? • Virus that makes all files and folders read-only filesystem on a usb drive

  Is there any way on how to remove a virus from Windows that makes the files and folders and the usb drive itself a read-only filesystem as this is an annoying one because the virus keeps copying itself as long as it sees a folder and keeps running which prevents you from creating and deleting files and folders from the usb drive and makes " mount -o remount,rw '/path' " ineffective ? btw i'm not really sure if it is a virus but what makes me think that it is a virus is for the reason the it creates a .exe file within every folder which was named after folder and it also immediately reverts to read-only filesystem which locks the files and folders even after executing the command " mount -o remount,rw '/path' ". i also think the virus is just running only within the usb drive as it is not affecting the folders on ubuntu. I could choose to reformat the usb drive as it only contains few important files but what concerns me is if such virus or whatever you may call it gets into my backup drives that contains many important files.Thanks for any help and advice you could give.

  i'm on ubuntustudio and i want to format my hd and try kubuntu (install in my acer notebook, no partion, no double operating system problem, only istall it) i've downloaded iso file ( kubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso ), insert usb pen drive, then: system administration startup disk creator erased usb pen content, and "make startup disk" finally, reboot computer with pen inside usb port normal boot didn't start (as expected) but only black screen with this signal: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright (c) 1994-2010, H. Peter Anvin et al unknown keyword in configuration file boot: i've tried different usb pen stick and different iso files (ubuntu, kubuntu, netbook edition).. always same problem (sometimes only the first line without "unknow keyword in conf file" error) some advice?? sorry for my bad english

• Online Advertising And Marketing Your Services?

  I have been working on freelance sites for a good 4 or 5 years, bending over backwards to build a decent portfolio and generate great ratings. I take huge pride in my work (web applications). I'm completely lost because when I think what would happen if I suddenly lost my freelance account it isn't a pretty picture. I have literally no idea where else I could advertise my services apart from google paid advertising. Any suggestions? I'd of course be more than willing to pay for marketing and such. I've been searching google for ages and can't find much advice on where to advertise to secure good clients for web development work. I say good clients because I mean actual business owners, not somebody else who is outsourcing to me (where do they find clients?). I'd appreciate any help.

• Has anyone used these database publish tools in Visual Studio 2012/2013 ?

  I am trying to figure out if they are actually useful... I have a DBProject and it would be nice if when I publish from my DEV to my TEST it what automatically copy the schema and data from DEV to TEST.. is that what this tab in visual studio is for ? On PROD I would never want to copy the data over but maybe I would change the schema and want to move that schema to PROD.. so is that what this tab is for ? For now we are using WEB DEPLOY but none of these database options.. We are manually using DATA COMPARE to sync changes on the various databases/DBproject... Any advice?

  I need your help with 3D transformations. I have a sphere and I want to deform it by a mouse click or a mouse move. I want to make a furrow or to bite off a piece of the sphere without any breaks of 3D material. It is possible in WPF, but if the quantity of 3D points is more then 25 000, it creates some freezes in a dynamic mode (animation breaks), because the object of MeshGeometry3D class should be reconstructed every time to stop the breaks of 3D material. Give me advice about tools for the realization of my task. Maybe it can be done with the help of DirectX/Direct3D or OpenGL? I am a newcomer in these collections of APIs, but I would like to study them. I need to integrate the process of transformation in WPF application.

• Ubuntu Server 11.04 installs fine then gets stuck on USBHID

  ites! I have installed Server 11.04 many many times from this disc and they have always worked perfectly (installed and operated fine). I wanted to reinstall my server again on the same hardware so I threw the disc in and installed but once it finished installing the boot loader and ejected the disc, it decided to go unresponsive. I restarted it and it loaded in through the grub perfectly it seemed, but then it goes and says either that a ipv6 router is unavailable (even though I have it hardwired to my network) or it goes and says usbhid: USB HID core driver and goes unresponsive there. I am very confused as this never happened before from this install. I want to see if this is just me or what before I just go ahead and download the newest version of server. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
