• What are the Pros & Cons of using SQL Azure for existing apps on dedicated servers

  We currently own our own servers, and rent a rack in a datacentre. Looking at the pricing, scalabilty and SLAs for Azure SQL, I am thinking that it might be viable to only use Azure SQL but continue to use our existing applications on our own servers in a datacentres. This will enable us to not worry about the database and its infrastructure so we can concentrate on building an application server farm with disk storeage for files etc. Our application is quite big and has various windows services and parts of it used unmanaged libraries that may not be feasible in the cloud, so probably coulnt have everything in the Azure cloud. The pros: Reduced Total Cost of ownership (no database servers, no sql server licenses) The Cons: I guess there would be overhead in the transfer of data between the Azure Cloud and our datacentre (ie cloud may be in US and datacentre is in the UK) but would this overhead be usable?

  I found a function online for turning a url within a string into a clickable link. • jQuery Sortable + Droppable z-index problem

  I am having a probelm with the z-index of my sortable object not being above my droppable. If you visit http://clareshilland.unknowndomain.co.uk/. Press Ctrl + L to bring up the login screen. Enter the username clare and the password shilland. It will then load in the admin bar and if you click manage gallery. A pop down thumbnail view will appear with all the photos from that gallery. The issue is that when you drag the 'polaroids' from the grid to the delete area they are under the delete area. I tried putting the delete area inside the same div as the grid but it makes no difference, I just don't know what to do at this point so any help would be a massive help!

• Drupal htaccess redirect - all files in directory to new directory

  Hiya, I've moved a site to Drupal, but am now getting a lot of 404 errors due to the search engines taking their time to update the indexes. The 404 paths all look similar to this: recipedata/ccp1300006/633_L.jpg recipedata/ccp1500005/risotto.jpg recipedata/ccp1500006/haddock.jpg So I'd like to do some htaccess redirection with mod_rewrite to take care of this lot. All the images DO exist - the path has just changed to /sites/default/files/images/ I've edited a lot of redirects into my htaccess already, but because the ccpXXXXXX directory changes I can't quite figure out the regex. This was my last attempt, but yeah - doesn't work :) Can anyone give me some pointers? • Google Map API V3 geocoder not showing the correct place

  I am upgrading my codes from Google Map API V2 to V3. In V2, I used GlocalSearch to get the latitude and longitude for the given address. In V3, I saw google.maps.Geocoder() and try to get the similar detail. However, the lat & long given by the V3 function is not accurate. • focus on page scroll navigation when using iPad

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks. • jQuery slideable divs with floated images how to make the right size.

  I am relatively new to using jQuery and I have a problem with creating some sliding tabs to work with images that are floated inside. http://www.dur.ac.uk/malachi.soord/jin/ The above page demonstrates the problem I am facing - click on the about tab and you will notice that the image that is inside is floated to the right - which I know is not taken into consideration when jQuery is calculates the height of each div tab with: $("#content > div").each (function() { $(this).css("height", $(this).height()); }); Is there a work around which could be used to allow me to take this into consideration? or is there a better way to achieve what I am trying to achieving.

  Hi I have my movie in the main timeline and then have a smaller clip in which there is a dynamic text box. In that smaller movie I have some actionscript myVars = new LoadVars(); myVars.load("http://preview.domain.co.uk/inc/loadVars.php"); myVars.percentage myVars.onLoad = function() { text_box.text = this.percentage; }; but when I play the movie it doesn't work. However if I move the dynamic textbox onto the main timeline it works. Please can someone help.

I am doing this from biopython using AlignIO object. • Relative Position in PHP between 2 points (Lat/Long)

  I have a database of airports with Latitude and Longitude for each point. I want to run a PHP script to find all airports that are nearby a given airport, with their distance and relative direction. I.e. for Airport KLDJ (40-37-02.810N 074-14-40.539W) Airport Nearby KJFK - John F Kennedy Airport (21.2 nm NE) (40-38-23.104N 073-46-44.132W) I have used code from http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to find distance, and tried to use it to find bearing, which might not be right. //BEARING RHUMB LINE $phi = log(tan($lat2/2+pi/4)/tan($lat1/2+pi/4)); $distance['bearing'] = (rad2deg(atan2($theta, $phi)) +180) % 360; I basically want to run all points through this script and find the distance, which I have already, but then the direction. (i.e. N, S, W, E, NW, SW, NE, SE)

It seems to create a transparant clone as your dragging, but when you drop it puts the draggable div in the right place, but leaves the original div in it's place and just appends the dom with a clone of that original div in its new place.

• Large number of Google Map Markers and IE6?

  I'm working on an application that generates a large number of Google Map markers (2000 - 7000) via JSON. I'm also using MarkerCluster. It works quick on Chrome and FF but IE6 takes few minutes and just crashes the first time I try to zoom in. I'm not doing any more than just adding the markers to a map using JQuery & GMap API. So I looked at the following URL of the regular Google Map. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=hotel&sll=53.182996,-2.581787&sspn=1.494529,4.927368&ie=UTF8&split=1&rq=1&ev=p&hq=hotel&hnear=&ll=53.123702,-2.730103&spn=1.496594,4.927368&t=h&z=8 It shows a lot of tiny markers (~1000) and works fine on IE6. Do you have any ideas why this works and the markers added via the API struggles? Thanks

• Storing dates as UTC in database

  I am storing date/times in the database as UTC and computing them inside my application back to local time based on the specific timezone. Say for example I have the following date/time: 01/01/2010 00:00 Say it is for a country e.g. UK which observes DST (Daylight Savings Time) and at this particular time we are in daylight savings. When I convert this date to UTC and store it in the database it is actually stored as: 31/12/2009 23:00 As the date would be adjusted -1 hours for DST. This works fine when your observing DST. However, what happens when the clock is adjusted back? When I pull that date from the database and convert it to local time that particular datetime would be seen as 31/12/2009 23:00 when in reality it was processed as 01/01/2010 00:00. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a bit of a flaw when storing times as UTC?

  Hi, I have got several thousands of lines of a web application source code, initially written on a US development system, to maintain. It makes heavy use of SQL statement strings, which are combined on the fly, e.g. string SQL = "select * from table where double_value = " + Math.Round(double_value, 2); Don't comment on bad programming style, that doesn't help me in this case :) The cruix: My system uses a German locale, which in turn leads to wrong SQL statements, like this: "select * from table where double_value = 15,5" (Note the comma as decimal separator instead of a point). Question: What is the most "elegant" way to change the locale of the web app in this case) to US or UK in order to prevent being forced to change and inspect every single line of code? .net 3.5 is not an option (would give me the chance to overwrite ToString() in an extension class) Kind regards

• Filling a screen width

  I'm really struggling to tidy up a web site I am building for someone. I've spent hours on trying to figure this out! I have limited knowledge so the code would be helpful. They want the section at the top (originally two images, now I'm trying background images and css) to fill the width of the browser- no matter what size it is. Does anyone know how to do this? Similarly, is there a setting to get text to fill 100% width of the box, no matter what? I would seriously appreciate even someone helping me move on a step! they want everything to sit tight and inline, in some browsers/screens it does but on mine it spreads out with lots of white space. www.thegees.co.uk is the site.

• Embeding EasyVideoPlayer Code into Wordpress Theme - Video not showing

  I'm attempting to place some embed code into a Premium WordPress Theme. NOTE: I'm not great when it comes to php. The embed code is produced by a video player called EasyVideoPlayer. (Basically it allows me to use Amazon S3 and gives me feedback on when people stop watching the video.) NOTE:I've contacted both the Wordpress Premium Theme support at Woothemes.com and the video players support for EasyVideoPlayer.com However both tend to stop at the point that another paid product is involved! • CSS Overflow issue in IE7

  I'm working on a site for a client at the moment, and have it working correctly in all browsers except IE7 (IE6 and IE8 tested fine). It's a WordPress site and the theme is a child theme of the Thematic framework. This is an example of a page that is not displayed correctly in IE7: http://roynesbitt.credit-medics.co.uk/our-donors The main content is forcing vertical and horizontal scrollbars on the main wrapper and is also not pushing the footer down, so that is appearing midway through it. The irony is that this works correctly in IE6, it's just IE7 that is displaying this issue. Any suggestions on how to fix are gratefully received.

  Hi, im wondering if anyone knows of any host providers ( uk preferably ) that deals mostly with accepting large file uploads. Most hosts only let you push something like 1.5mb ( thats taking into account the connection and the max execution time ). What i am looking for is a host specificaly for storing files on. I was going to create an upload script onto my application which posted the file to the external host and then return back ( using headers so the user doen't even know they have left ). Does anyone know of a host for this?

  I have an application that is being expanded to the UK and I will need to add support for Latin-9 Unicode. I have done some Googling but found nothing solid as to what is involved in the process. Any tips?   Trying again. On advice, adding the piece of code that I do understand. I am fine with the fact that I have to save 4 bits of information in two lines like so: IniFile.WriteString('TestSection','Name','Country'); IniFile.WriteString('TestSection','City','Street'); My question is more about loading this information back into the form. If in my IniFile I have saved for example the following code [TestSection] John=Uk London=barlystreet Mike=Spain Madrid=eduardostrata Emma=USA New York=1st Avenue Made up information in the IniFile. Added through the code above. Now my question is: How could I load for example, when I type in an edit box Mike, the rest of the belonging information.(Spain, Madrid,eduardostrata).

• Gruber URL Regex tweak to capture "domain.com"

  I found an updated version of John Gruber's regex for url matching in this post by user GianPac, which states it's been adapted to recognize url without protocol or the www part: (?i)\b((?:[a-z][\w-]+:(?:/{1,3}|[a-z0-9%])|www\d{0,3}[.]|[a-z0-9.-]+[.][a-z]{2,4}/?)(?:[^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+)))))(?:(([^\s()<]+|(([^\s()<]+))))|[^\s`!()[]{};:'\".,<?«»“”‘’])) Whilst this works in most cases, I found it does not match "google.com". It does match "google.comm" and "google.co.uk", so this must be a small oversight. The trouble is, I literally hate regex. It's the bane of my life. I just want to try and tweak this one more time to allow for "google.com" - can anyone throw me a pointer? I (think) it's something to do with this part of the code: +[.][a-z]{2,4}/?) ?
