  I've encountered a situation where it would be very helpful to know the breakdown of shell use by percentage. For example, I'm looking for something like bash: X%, sh: Y%, csh, tcsh, zsh, ksh, dash, etc.. Obviously, I know there are several complications - multiple shells, the definition of "use", uncertainty and so forth, but I would like to see an informed answer derived from actual data and based on some stated metric, even if the result could be horribly wrong. Bonus if there is historical data demonstrating a shift in preferences.

• What does "performant" software actually mean?

  I see it used a lot, but haven't seen a definition that makes complete sense. Wiktionary says "characterized by an adequate or excellent level of performance or efficiency", which isn't much help. Initially I though performant just meant "fast", but others seem to think it's also about stability, code quality, memory use/footprint, or some combination of all those. I think this is a "real" question - but if enough people reckon this is a subjective question, that's an answer in itself.

  To my understanding the difference between a macro and a function is, that a macro-call will be replaced by the instruction in the definition, and a function does the whole push, branch and pop -thing. Is this right, or have I understand something wrong? Additionally, if this is right, it would mean, that macros would take more space, but would be faster (because of the lack of the push,branch and pop instructions.), wouldn't it?

  In VS2005 I have multi-project solution. Two of the projects use an external set of DLLs to create a report, using report definition data taken from an SQL Server. One of the projects creates the report just fine, but the other project results in an Exception.   I have a before_save that calculates a percentage that needs to include the object that is being updated. Is there a one-liner in Rails that takes care of this? for example and this is totally made up: Object.find(:all, :include => :updated_object) Currently I'm sending the object that is getting updated to the definition that calculates the percentage and that works but it's making things messy.
