• Ubuntu Software Centre is gone! How can I get it back?

  Right. I am having MAJOR issues. (It would be much appreciated if you would solve them for me! Check my profile for open questions...) Following an answerer... who sorry to say... didn't give a great answer because it was just a graphical way of doing what I had already done - suggested I purge a library. Turns out that library controlled the Advanced Packaging Tool (apt), Ubuntu Software Centre and the repositories. Not a great tool to mess with. While trying to purge the library, it came up with 'Removing MyUnity.. Removing x... Removing x... Removing Ubuntu Software Centre... Removing X... Removing apt..." I quickly recognized and force shut-down my system. But I guess it was too late. So... well, plainly put - how do I get it back?!

• Multi Monitor Setup Problems

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I have until recently been using a nVida Graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT) with two monitors attached, this all worked fine and dandy. A couple of days ago I bought two new identical LCD monitors for a multi monitor setup and two ATI graphics cards (ATI Sapphire Radeon HD5450). NOTE *All monitors work fine in Windows XP, 2k, Vista and 7 After I had booted into Ubuntu only one display came on, that I kind of expected anyway, then I removed the driver for the nVidia card and downloaded the ATI version which gave me the ATI Catalyst Control Center - in that only two of the displays were showing the third was disabled and showing unknown driver. I enabled the third monitor that stated "Unkown Driver" and had to reboot, upon reboot none of the displays work. I restarted and booted up into recovery mode and from now that is only what I can get into using a failsafe driver. It seems according to the log that a server is already active for Display 0 and I have to remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. This is what the log file is saying: Fatal Server Error Server is already active for display 0 if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. (WW) xf86 closeconsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETSTATE failed: Bad file descriptor ddxSigGiveUp: closing log I have tried looking at my xorg.config file but unfortunately I have not really got a clue as to how it "should" be - I have tried regenerating it using this command from a terminal: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg but that had no effect so I am currently stuck in failsafe driver mode but two monitors are active but are mirroring each other. I hope that this is not to long - looking back I have been going on a bit! but I am just trying to explain as much as I can... I have asked this on Linuxquestions but nobody seems to know either or at least I have not had any responses. Could some kind soul please help explain what I can do from here? I would be eternally grateful. • How can I remove all updates installed after a specific date?

  I have allowed the update manager to install a 200 Mib of updates, and I think that these update run my graphics driver into a problem. So, I need a way to remove the updates that have been installed since 30th of may 12 for example (or any other date). If I have to remove them manually (in the case of uninstalling them one by one), you are kindly requested to give me the instructions of how to do that.

• USC gives "failed to download package files" message - how to fix?

  Trying to download a program (Advanced Settings aka Gnome Tweak tool) from USC and getting this error "Failed to Download Package Files: check your internet connection". Under details is info: Failed to fetch http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/network-manager/gir1.2-networkmanager-1.0_0.9.1.90-0ubuntu4_i386.deb 404 Not Found Question: how to fix? Note: I tried downloading another program from USC (GnuCash) and it worked fine. And my internet connect is working fine (able to surf the web, etc) and Ubuntu is fully up to date and is able to download updates. It seems to be a problem just getting the "Advanced Settings" program. (Ubuntu 11.10).

• Why are some applications so hard to find in the Ubuntu Software Centre?

  Some applications don't pop up in the search even when you type in their name. Take for instance Sushi. When you type in "sushi" into the search box, it fails to throw up the application. Only when you type in "gnome-sushi" does it appear. This is despite the fact that the application has "sushi" by itself in the application description. There are other applications which don't spring to mind right now, but I've discovered before.

• Installing purchased apps by terminal

  I've been trying to reinstall all my purchased apps on a new machine, and I ran into a problem. Because of the size of them (about 10-12GB in total) and the fact that downloading them is painfully slow for whatever reason (at most 800kB/s), it takes a lot of time (not to mention USC crashing). And then, when I tried to leave them overnight, none of them were installed and everything was at the same spot I left it. Is there anyway to install them via terminal? Like some kind of USC backend were I could just add the archives for apps listed as purchased and then install them via apt-get?

• How do you reset a USB device from the command line?

  Is it possible to reset the connection of a USB device, without physically disconnecting/connecting from the PC? Specifically, my device is a digital camera. I'm using gphoto2, but lately I get "device read errors", so I'd like to try to do a software-reset of the connection. From what I can tell, there are no kernel modules being loaded for the camera. The only one that looks related is usbhid.

E.g like: LibreOffice | I use Google Doc etc. RhythmBox | I use Google Play Music Thunderbird | I use Gmail, don't like client Videos | Watch online Messaging | Hangouts And other softwares like Remmina Client, BitTorrent Client. Can I simply remove it in Ubuntu Software Centre? I like my Laptop clean and having unmessy software that I never use. I normally use Chromium Browser to do all the stuff, I think I am heavy user of Google, and love the simplicity of Ubuntu. Lol! Can anyone tell or guide me? Thanks!

• Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901: Remap orange "My Computer" button

  I have a Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901 (a.k.a. Part No. 57Y6336) that I'm using with an HTPC running Windows 7. The remote comes with an orange button in the top-left corner that by default, when pressed, opens the Windows "My Computer" window. I would like to remap / reprogram this button to act like the green "Windows Media Center" button instead on a Windows Media Center (WMC) remote; that is, open Windows Media Center if it isn't already open, or go to the WMC homepage if WMC is already open. I've tried several keyboard-remapping utilities (as recommended in other, more general "how to remap keyboard key?" SuperUser.com questions) including SharpKeys, Key Mapper, and KeyTweak, with no luck so far. None of these utilities recognize the orange button -- they all do recognize that some key was pressed, but display a value for the key of "unsupported" or something similar. I was able to use a utility called Keyboard Scan Code Generator to determine that a press of the orange button has a KeyData value of 16777217 (0x1000001), and a "Virtual Code" value of 182. (The other "media" buttons on the N5901 have the same KeyData value, but different Virtual Code values). I'm not sure at this point where in Windows this keystroke is being interpreted as a command to open "My Computer." There is no special software / driver for this device; it worked out of the box with Windows 7, no special driver install necessary. Is there any way to accomplish this? • Some URLs fail to load on Windows web portal

  I’m working in a large data center and have been assigned to troubleshoot and issue with a windows (IIS) web server that acts as a portal for a customer of the data center. This portal server is on a DMZ at the local data center. I don’t have access to the portal desktop and am relying on an off-site administrator to work with me to do testing and report the condition of the portal. He tells me there are no software firewalls or other filtering configured. While most of the remote web pages work fine, several of the URSs the portal is suppose to serve up fail to load. I had wireshark installed on the portal system and had a capture taken of one of the failures. I used IE to access one of the remote web servers at issue. I could see the TCP SYN-ACK coming back from the remote server, but after several HTTP GETs fail to get a response the portal server sends a reset. The webmaster of the remote web server assures me that no sites are being blocked. I had a capture taken outside the local firewall, so there should be no issue there. Another tech set up a laptop and used the IP address of the portal (we took the portal off-line for the test). The laptop loads the URL as expected. I tried having Firefox loaded to make sure that the HTTP GET was not mal-formed. Same failure as with IE. So, it seems it is not the remote web server or the network, because there was no problem with the laptop. At this point, I’m not sure what other questions to ask or tests to do.

• Disk Error on Boot (Possible boot sector issue)

  I own a 4-5 year old Dell Dimension E510 with Windows XP: Media Center Edition. I have 2 drives installed: C Drive: Windows XP: Media Center Edition G Drive: 2 partitions: Windows 7 (beta) Windows XP (professional) That is also the order they are connected. The C Drive is my primary drive. When I attempt to boot the computer, the bios loading screen appears normally; the progress bar moves and it's fine. The very next page, however, supposed to be a boot choice. When I installed Windows 7 onto the G Drive in context of the C drive it added a boot selector to the C drive's boot sequence. It gives me the option of booting Windows 7 or Windows XP: Media Center Edition. However, my problem is now this: After the bios screen I previously mentioned, instead of a boot selector, I receive the following error: A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. The drive is spinning up normally. I hear no odd noises/clicks/scraping coming from it, even after disabling the other drive to listen to it carefully. According to me, it's a boot sector issue. I have never experienced this before, but maybe during a recent shutdown, Windows XP: MCE errored out and ruined the boot sector. Dilemma! I don't have the Windows XP: MCE disc, because it was installed by the factory. I have accessed the hidden partition on the drive before (you hit a key combination on the bios screen and it comes up with an interface to fix your drive). However, I don't want to reformat the drive (which is what the interface gives me the option to do). I want to possibly fix the boot sector. How can I achieve that?

• Can't mount Linux usb disk. It just create /dev/sg device but no /dev/sd

  I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux. When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk. If I look at cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs I get ATA Hitachi HTS54321 FB2O HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N RP05 Seagate Desktop 0130 Corsair CSSD-R60GB2 So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result. A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata). Added: I did try to mount /dev/sg3 but mount say that its not a block device. (File say Its a character special device). • CSS / jQuery Vertically and Horizontally Center DIV

  I'm trying to vertically and horizontally center this div even when there is content to scroll and the user is scrolling down the page. The following test works fine in IE, but in Firefox I get a weird flickering affect when hovering over the thumbnail image. • Help me re-center a ModalPopup within an iframe when the iframe's parent window scrolls

  I have a web page with an iframe in it (I don't like it, but that's the way it has to be). It's not a cross-domain iframe so there's nothing to worry about there. I have written a jQuery extension that does the centering of a ModalPopup (which is called from an overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._layout method) based on the width and height of the iframe's parent, so that it looks centered even though the iframe is not in the center of the page. It's a lot of tricky stuff, especially since the web page I added the iframe to runs in quirks mode. Now, I've also overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._attachPopup, so that when the parent window resizes or scrolls, the ModalPopup inside of the iframe recenter's itself relative to the new size of the parent window. However, the same code that attaches the popup to the parent window's resize event does NOT work for the parent window's scroll event. Any suggestions or alternatives out there to help me out? I am working with jQuery, so if I can use something besides the $addHandler method from MS that'd be fine. • Cursor image to the center on mouseout

  Hi all! I'm a real noobie with flash and I was wondering if somebody could help me with this one. I have this actionsript 3 code, where the cursor image "ball_mc" follows the mouse's position with a slight delay: stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,followBall); function followBall(event:Event):void { var dx:int = ball_mc.x - mouseX; var dy:int = ball_mc.y - mouseY; ball_mc.x -= dx / 5; ball_mc.y -= dy /5; } 1) How can I get the cursor image automatically return to the center of the stage on mouseout? As of now, it stays at the position where the mouse leaves the stage. 2) How can I reverse the movement of the mouse? So that when I, for example, move mouse to the right, the cursor image would move to the left? And when moving the mouse up, the image would go down. The stage is 800 x 250 pixels, in case that makes any difference.

• Horizontally and Vertically Center Modal Div IE Issue

  I'm trying to horizontally and vertically center a modal window inside a div. I want it to be cross browser compatible. You can see from the picture below that when I resize IE8 then click, "show modal" button it displays not exactly horizontally centered. This does not seem to be an issue with Chrome. Any thoughts? • Center aligned form with equal width labels

  I have a very simple web form which consists of labels and input fields, however I can not seem to find a way of aligning the form in the center of the page and for the labels to have an equal width so that they appear neatly next to each other, one under the other. The structure of my page is basically: <body> <div class="form"> <form method="post"> <fieldset> <label>Mobile:</label><input type="text" name="msisdn"><br/> <label>Code:</label><input type="text" name="code"><br/> <br/> <input type="image" src="submit-button.gif" alt="Submit"> <br/> <input type="checkbox" name="ts_and_cs"><label> Accept Terms and Conditions</label> <br/><br/> </fieldset> </form> </div> </body> Usually I would fix this by doing float:left on the label fields and setting a width on the labels, however for this I need the labels and input fields to be centered on the page. Also I am not able to set the width of the page (or any containing divs) as the page will be displayed on mobile devices with different screen sizes. Any suggestions as to how best style the form?
