    I am trying to install MySQL without root permissions. I ran through the following steps: Download MySQL Community Server 5.5.8 Linux - Generic Compressed TAR Archive Unpack it, for example to: /home/martin/mysql Create a my.cnf file in your home directory. The file contents should be: [server] user=martin basedir=/home/martin/mysql datadir=/home/martin/sql_data socket=/home/martin/socket port=3666 Go to the /home/martin/mysql directory and execute: ./scripts/mysql_install_db --defaults-file=~/my.cnf --user=martin --basedir=/home/martin/mysql --datadir=/home/martin/sql_data --socket=/home/martin/socket Your MySQL server is ready. Start it with this command: ./bin/mysqld_safe --defaults-file=~/my.cnf & When I try to change the password of MySQL it gives the error: Cannot connect to mysql server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' How can I change this path and see whether the mysql.sock is created or not?

    I finally got Guvcview, a great software for Logitech webcam and it does all the stuff that one wants out of it. But I'm not satisfy with the video recording, video and audio out of synchronisation also video seems to be in slow motion. Please help so that I can tweak in and get a good video recording with the webcam.   • Bash Script to Back Up Backs Up Itself

    I have the following bash script that creates a tar.gz of my filesystem on a Kubuntu PC. The problem is, that it also tries to backup the tar.gz backup file, even though I am storing the backup in /tmp and omitting /tmp from the backup.   • How to restrict user to a particular folder in CentOS 6?

    I will need to create users so developers can log in and clone/pull/push changes/repositories from a github like platform. I've managed to add a user (using the root) to this CentOS machine; I now have this line in /etc/passwd: chris:x:32008:32010::/home/chris/public_html:/bin/bash ..and this in /etc/shadow: chris:$1$ruUeLtTu$onAY2hdu1J.UmHajEIlmR.:15385:0:99999:7::: I am able to SSH the server, I have permission to create a folder and I guess that should be enough. But I am able to see other files and folders outside public_html. How can I actually restrict the user to a particular directory so he can't "cd out" of his folder?   • OpenSSH SFTP: chrooted user with access to other chrooted users' files

    Decided to re-phrase the question entirely in order to not have to make a new one. I currently have an SFTP server set up using OpenSSH's SFTP functionality. All my users are chrooted, and everything works. What I need most right now is for one user, which is not root (because this user can't have any real SSH powers!), to have access to all other users' chrooted dirs. This user's job is to fetch all uploaded documents every once in a while. Directory structure as of now is: /home |_ /home/user1 |_ /home/user2 |_ /home/user3 With ChrootDirectory set as /home/%u User "adminuser" should have access to user1, user2 and user3's directories without having access to /home or at the very least not to anything but /home. Bonus points for the one who can tell me how to let users write inside /home/%u without having to make a new directory inside that dir which they own themselves, and not root as is the case with /home/%u (openssh chroot prerequisite).

  • How to create shared home directories across multiple computers?

    I know there are ways to share a folder across computers making it easy to move files. But I was wondering how one would setup a single login which lets you access the same files regardless of which machine you login on? What I would like is something similar to something you would see in a college campus where students login on machines in the lab and see their files regardless of which machine they use. I know there are server involved here. I have a need to create this on a smaller scale where we have a few computers available (and one of these could act as the server if needed and host the files) that every one shares. Note, the specific install of software might be different on each computer but the login and OS are the same. Since some computers have additional capability that our group members will need to use at rotating schedules (software licenses or hardware components, etc.). I have not done this before, so I would appreciate detailed instructions if possible or a reference to a guide that describes this. Thanks in advance.

  • Can I place the Ubuntu One for Windows home sync folder anywhere on C:\ during installation?

    My company does not allow us to keep personal files inside our personal folder. Something about the roaming profiles getting to large. With Dropbox I am able to set the destination of the folder during the install. Is there anyway to tell Ubuntu One where to put the Ubuntu One folder? I don't want to add external folders to the sync list, I just want to control where the installer creates the Ubuntu One folder. Otherwise I can't use the service :(

  • grub2 update-grub puts wrong UUID in grub.cfg for system with separate /, /boot and /home partitions

    It is putting in the UUID for the boot partition and not the / (root) partition. It's grub2 (1.99-21ubuntu3.1) on Xubuntu 12.04. UPDATE: ? I ran Boot Info Script 0.60, here are results? The boot info script is too big for askubuntu, but is here. The system not booting is on /dev/sdh. The booted disk, Xubuntu 12.04, is /dev/sdb. /sdh2/etc/fstab is at line 1073. The incorrect UUIDs are at line 945 and 954. "blkid" putput is at line 318. It is putting the UUID for "boot" versus "root" in boot.cfg, line 937. I have noticed that the relationship between physical drives and names in /dev vary depending on which system is booted.

  • How to resolve Windows Update Error 8024402F on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit?

    I have been having the same problem with Windows Updates on 2 of my machines at home, both running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. One of the 2 machines is a brand new install, the other has run Windows Update in the past, but is also not working now. When I manually check for updates using the Control Panel, I get error code 8024402F: I followed the link to "Get help with this error", which brings up several articles in Windows Help and Support, none of which are for this specific error code. From the help and general googling I've tried: Checking internet connectivity. Most of the help suggests that this error is caused by a general internet connectivity problem. But if you're reading this, my connection is definitely working fine. Disabling antivirus temporarily and trying to run Windows Update. This didn't help (I run AVG free) Running Control Panel - Troubleshooting - Security Systems - Fix Problems with Windows Update. This said it detected and resolved problems, but didn't help. Update using IE (as I used to in XP). Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ redirects me to http://test.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx for which IE displays a "connection problem" (i.e. site unreachable) I've had the same problem for 24 hours now, so surely the Windows Update servers haven't been down this whole time? A quick check on twitter shows no worldwide outcry about Windows Update being unavailable, so is it just me?   • Getting at fsid under Linux? Or an alternate way of identifying filesystems?

    In an environment with automounted home directories, such that the same filesystem exported by a fileserver may be mounted multiple times on the client, I would like to authoritatively be able to identify whether two mountpoints are in fact the same filesystem. That is, if the remote server exports: /home And the local client has: # mount fileserver:/home/l/lars on /home/lars type nfs (rw...) fileserver:/home/b/bob on /home/bob type nfs (rw...) I am looking for a way to identify that both /home/lars and /home/bob are in fact the same filesystem. In theory this is what the fsid result of the statvfs structure is for, but in all cases, for both local and remote filesystems, I am finding that the value of this structure member is 0. Is this some sort of client-side issue? Or do most modern NFS servers simply decline to provide a useful fsid? The end goal of all of this is to robustly interpret the output from the quota command for NFS filesystems. For example, given the example above, running quota as myself may return something like: Disk quotas for user lars (uid 6580): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace otherserver:/vol/home0/a/alice 12 52428800 52428800 4 4294967295 4294967295 fileserver:/home/l/lars 9353032 9728000 10240000 124018 0 0 ...the problem here being that there exists a quota for me on otherserver which is visible in the results of the quota command, even though my home directory is actually on a different device. My plan was to look up the fsid for each mountpoint listed in the quota output and check to see if it matched the fsid associated with my home directory. It looks like this won't work, so...any suggestions?

If you want to solve this at a later stage, restart this script with the --force option My host is pinging and hostname command gives correct hostname. I tried also with --force option force but still not working giving following issues: /home/mysql_cluster/mysqlc/scripts/mysql_install_db: line 245: /home/mysql_cluster/mysqlc/bin/my_print_defaults: No such file or directory Installing MySQL system tables... /home/mysql_cluster/mysqlc/scripts/mysql_install_db: line 393: /home/mysql_cluster/mysqlc/bin/mysqld: No such file or directory Installation of system tables failed!   • What's the right way to create a Ubuntu user whose home directory is /var/www/SITE?

    First of, I need to state I'm a complete ignorant when it comes to server administration on Ubuntu, and I'm doing what I can. I have been trying to do this for hours with no luck. Basically, I want to create a Ubuntu user whose home directory is /var/www/SITE, and prefered it is chroot'd to it. The chroot part is not so important right now, as first I prefer to make anything work. The user should be able to upload files here and the webserver (www-data user?) should be able to pick them up with no problem. I was able to create the user and give it the home directory /var/www/SITE. (the user is "anders"). I gave him a password, and "anders" can connect to FTP just fine and upload files. But here's where things don't work: While my user can upload files to that /var/www/SITE directory, when I access the webpage on my browser I get a Forbidden error. Note that anders is also a member of the www-data group. I can fix this by running sudo chmod g+s /var/www/SITE/* anders -R but this is of course not ideal. Ideally the files should "work" as soon as I upload them. What's the right way to fix this? If it matters (don't think so), I'm editing my files in Coda 2 and anders is the user for it.
