  • Using mod_rewrite to shutdown website.

    Hi, I am trying to shutdown a website to everyone except my ip address. I almost have it working. I cannot access www.mysite.com, but I can access all folders that have another .htaccess file in them. I have a .htaccess file in /www with the following code: #Use this when website is down RewriteEngine on #this allows access through my ip RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^(66\.777\.888\.99)$ RewriteRule !down.php$ /down.php [L] Some folders in my site have .htaccess files in them. If I have a file with the line: RewriteEngine on I can still access the folder. For example, if I have the second .htaccess file in /www/about, then I can still access mysite.com/about (but the .css file included on that page actually loads down.php). If I delete "RewriteEngine on" I get redirected to down.php. Any ideas? I think my mod_rewrite gets confused with multiple .htaccess files. Thanks!

    How can I grab the first subfolder in a directory and delete it? I found a script to monitor the free diskspace. It sends an alert email if space runs low, but I want to also delete some unneeded stuff. I have a backup folder where I save daily and monthly backups. I want to delete the first folder since this always the oldest, but I don't know the name of the oldest backup. My folders without Jan-May and Dec: 06-01 07-01 08-01 09-01 10-01 11-01 Friday Monday Saturday Sunday Thursday Tuesday Wednesday How can I delete the first folder "06-01" without knowing its name?

  • Setting Up nginx Site Down That Responds Differently to Ajax?

    I am trying to set up an automatic site-down page for nginx. So far I have this: location / { try_files /sitedown.html @myapp; } location @myapp { ... } That works well enough: if sitedown.html is present, it serves that, otherwise it serves the app. What I'd like to do, however, is respond differently to Ajax requests so that they don't error out the javascript. I believe, using the rewrite module, that I can do something like if ($http_x_requested_with = XMLHttpRequest) { but it's unclear to me how to use this in order to do what I want. I'd like requests that come with that header to return a simple JSON response like "sitedown" with the appropriate json encoding header. Barring that, it would be nice to return a 503 response code that the javascript could react to.

  • Arch Linux: How to handle patches which only you will use?

    I'm using freerdp together with xmonad and it has been giving me a lot of trouble. The super key (or "windows key") is my mod key in xmonad and it has been interfering with my freerdp usage rather annoyingly. Whenever I switched workspaces (or did anything else in xmonad involving the super key), windows (controlled by the freerdp instance in focus) registered a keypress as well. This event combined with the loss of focus got the super key stuck in windows indefinitely: the press of the keys d and r would first show my desktop, then open the run dialog (as if I was pressing the windows key constantly). I've tried several versions of freerdp, but all exhibited this annoying behavior. So I resorted to patching freerdp myself to just ignore the left super key on my keyboard. I love free software for a lot of reasons (especially the ability to alter things like this myself), however I still find it annoying to patch and rebuild freerdp on all version (and dependency) changes. How do you deal with situations like this? Is there even a "right way" to resolve this issue?

Partially liquid lunch dishes? Neat stuff that messes your fingers like cheese slices? I somehow had the urge to invent a special food glove to insulate my clean fingers from the grub.

  • Laptop automatic shutdown after 2 seconds

    I'm trying to insvestigate which component produces this behavior. Other indications show it may be the GPU but I wonder if anyone knows more. It's a Toshiba Satellite X200 description: AC power shows the power being fed normally, when turned on the fan works and it appears to be starting up but after 2 seconds it shuts down with only the 'AC power connected" led on. -- seconds are about up to 4,maybe not 2 exactly.

    In the spirit of the question What is your oldest hardware that still works?, I'd like to ask: What is the oldest hardware you know that is still in production use? And what challenges did you (or someone else) face in keeping it running (scarce documentation, no support, no spare parts available...)? Most organizations will retire / upgrade software and hardware after 5-10 years, but sometimes old software is kept running on old boxes, because it "just works". I once worked at a client site that was running a critical piece of (in-house developed) business software on a single server running HP-UX. The server was old (ca. 12-13 years), but fortunately still running without problems; however, getting spares would have been very difficult, and since software installation was undocumented, any significant system changes or even new hardware might have caused significant downtime and data loss. We eventually managed to replace it, but this is not always possible. I also read that many organizations still run decade-old mainframe hardware, particularly for highly customized systems controlling industrial machines or power plants.     I just installed SSRS 2008 on a development server and when I connect to it with SQL Management Studio I do not have all of the items in Object Explorer that I had with our SSRS 2005 installation. For example, we are missing the "Home" folder which lists all the reports. When we browse to our /ReportServer URL we can view and run our reports, so I know they are on the server. Does anyone know if this is a permissions issue or something else?

  • How can laptop keyboard keys be removed and replaced?

    I'm trying to fix a laptop keyboard that has issues with keys on its left side. Just by feel, it's clear that something sticky got under there. There could be something crunchy too, but that might just be the sound of the key's spring releasing itself from the sticky. I don't know the cause because it's not my computer and the owner isn't sure, but I'm guessing soda spill for now. The computer is an HP dv2500. I've removed the keyboard and blown under it but that hasn't helped. I didn't use compressed air because I just don't have any available, but I suspect it wouldn't help with sticky. So, I'd like to pop they keys off and clean with damp cotton swabs or similar. Is there a proper way to remove the keys? I've found some instructions via Google for non-laptop keyboards, but they don't seem like they'd work for me. Alternate solutions to the problem also welcome, but I've been curious about how to remove the keys for some time for other reasons.

    Hi, I’m constantly seeing Ad’s about Registry Cleaning. Each time I see one of those Ad’s I remember reading an article (don’t remember who wrote it, but it was posted on one of those geek chat pages) a few years ago about it not being necessary to clean a registry, in fact, the article continued, it and said sometimes it causes more harm than good to run a registry cleaner. I would like to hear your opinion about this, and if you think it is good to use one of these programs, could you recommend a few. Thanks in advance. garybo

  • What is the function of those film covers on electronic equipment such as mobile screens but also peripheral plastics on a laptop?

    I understand it may "protect" an area but I don't get why the customer gets it and then takes it off after it was being protected in a full box anyway. Also, should those film covers that surround the plastics around a laptop screen (and not the screen itself) and maybe also on the keyboard be kept on as much as possible? I noticed if one tries to keep them on as much as possible they tend to go off by themselves anyway, but anyway, what's the status quo about it?

  • Buying an old laser printer -- what will need to be replaced?

    Hi all -- as you can see I'm new. I do IT and wiring for a small local shop but I never deal with printers. I do a LOT of printing, and I'd like to stop spending as much money on it. On my local CL, there is an HP 8100DN (duplex network) printer for a very good price (and the toner is a quarter-cent per page). It has printed 200,000 pages and I don't yet know anything else about it. The model was released in 1999. So my questions: What are the parts that tend to need service on laser printers? On ebay, I see fusers, rollers, DC power boards, and motors. What would you expect to replace soon at 200,000 pages? Are there any good "tests" to find out if certain parts are near failure? Do you have anything to say about the HP 8100 specifically? The bottom line for me is that if there's any chance of repairs costing more than $100, it's not worth it for me.

    I'm trying to speed up my PC, and I figured out that a full version of SQL Management Studio 2012 is installed including localhost server. I only need to connect to remote hosts, so running a local server by default should be disabled. Is there an easy way to disable certain parts so I can speed up my PC and booting time? Thanks in advance. I really have no clue what processes I can disable without ruining everything.

  • View numeric columns in hex - SQL Server Management Studio

    In SQL Server Management Studio, when I run a query which outputs a numeric column (int or similar types), they are displayed in decimal (example: 193). I want them to display in hex (example: 0xC1). How do I do that? I found many answers on how to write converter functions, but I don't want that - only change the display in SSMS. I only found this unanswered question. I use SQL2010, though may move to SQL2012 soon.

    A couple of days ago my mother asked me to set up a computer at his house, she wants to use it to basic web browsing, video chat and nothing more. The problem is, neither my mother nor my sister know anything about using or maintaining a computer. What I want is to have a working base install of windows 7 and just discard everything installed, downloaded, ... when it reboots. That way I can set up a partition just for saving files and whatever they do the computer will always return to a working state at start up. can that be done? PS: Sadly linux is not an option since my sister wants to be able to play some games with my steam account and not all of them run with wine.

The setup utility in centos is too basic (doesn't seem to allow me to open up custom ports, just standard ones). Suggestions of a tool or utility to simply iptables management? I quickly searched online and reached to Microsoft documentations where it provides information of the how to install (restore) AdventureWorks for SQL Server 2011 for Denali. Download the AdventureWorks from here. Run following script (replace your path of mdf file. CREATE DATABASE AdventureWorks2008R2 ON (FILENAME = 'C:\SQL 11 CTP1\CTP1\AdventureWorks2008R2_Data.mdf') FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG ; When you run above script it will give you following message and you are DONE! File activation failure. The physical file name "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\AdventureWorks2008R2_Log.ldf" may be incorrect. New log file 'C:\SQL 11 CTP1\CTP1\AdventureWorks2008R2_log.ldf' was created. Converting database 'AdventureWorks2008R2' from version 679 to the current version 684.
