• Designing bayesian networks

  I have a basic question about Bayesian networks. Let's assume we have an engine, that with 1/3 probability can stop working. I'll call this variable ENGINE. If it stops working, then your car doesn't work. If the engine is working, then your car will work 99% of the time. I'll call this one CAR. Now, if your car is old(OLD), instead of not working 1/3 of the time, your engine will stop working 1/2 of the time. I'm being asked to first design the network and then assign all the conditional probabilities associated with the table. I'd say the diagram of this network would be something like OLD -> ENGINE -> CAR Now, for the conditional probabilities tables I did the following: OLD |ENGINE ------------ True | 0.50 False | 0.33 and ENGINE|CAR ------------ True | 0.99 False | 0.00 Now, I am having trouble about how to define the probabilities of OLD. In my point of view, old is not something that has a CAUSE relationship with ENGINE, I'd say it is more a characteristic of it. Maybe there is a different way to express this in the diagram? If the diagram is indeed correct, how would I go to make the tables? Thanks

• Git Diff with Beyond Compare

  I have succeeded in getting git to start Beyond Compare 3 as a diff tool however, when I do a diff, the file I am comparing against is not being loaded. Only the latest version of the file is loaded and nothing else, so there is nothing in the right pane of Beyond Compare. I am running git 1.6.3.1 with Cygwin with Beyond Compare 3. I have set up beyond compare as they suggest in the support part of their website with a script like such: #!/bin/sh # diff is called by git with 7 parameters: # path old-file old-hex old-mode new-file new-hex new-mode "path_to_bc3_executable" "$2" "$5" | cat Has anyone else encountered this problem and know a solution to this? Edit: I have followed the suggestions by VonC but I am still having exactly the same problem as before. I am kinda new to Git so perhaps I am not using the diff correctly. For example, I am trying to see the diff on a file with a command like such: git diff main.css Beyond Compare will then open and only display my current main.css in the left pane, there is nothing in the right pane. I would like the see my current main.css in the left pane compared to the HEAD, basically what I have last committed.   I am experimenting with creating a table that keeps a version of every row. The idea is to be able to query for how the rows were at any point in time even if the query has JOINs. • Multiple jQuery includes in a document

  Hi, I have a document which uses old jQuery and I need new jQuery for a particular plug-in. By the way, in the Firefox looks like old jQuery lib loads and scripts that depends on it works, but script that uses new version, and in IE and Chrome everything is exactly opposite.

• New Themes New Benefits (WinForms)

  We believe that working hard on something can be great fun at the end when everything is done and the seeds have resulted in the sweetest fruits. This is the case with the new Theming Mechanism and the new Visual Style Builder which we introduced as of Q1 2010.   I am not going to dive into any details on the new concepts behind all this stuff, but will simply focus on the numbers: both in terms of loading speed and memory usage. As you may already know, the new approach we use to style our controls uses the so called Style Repository which stores style settings that can be reused throughout the whole theme. As a result, we have estimated that the size of our themes has been significantly reduced. For instance, the size of all XML files of the Desert theme sums up to 1.83 MB. The case with the new version of the Desert theme is drastically different. Despite the fact that the new theme consists of more XML files compared to the old, its size is only 707 KB!   Furthermore, we have performed a simple performance test since the common sense tells us that such a great improvement in terms of memory footprint should be followed by a great improvement in terms of speed. We have estimated that loading and applying the new Desert theme to a form containing all RadControls for WinForms takes roughly 30% less time compared to the same operation with the old version of the Desert theme. The following screenshots briefly demonstrate the scenario which we used to estimate the loading time difference between the old and the new Desert theme:     Here, the old Desert theme is applied to all controls on the Form which takes almost 1,3 seconds.     Applying the new Desert theme (based on the new Theming Mechanism) takes about 0,78 seconds.   On top of all these great improvements, we can add the fact that the new Visual Style Builder significantly reduces the time needed to style a control by entirely changing the approach compared to the old version of this tool. • No updates in my Raring

  Since upgrade from Quantal to raring i am not recieving any updates. For example firefox package - I have version 17 installed and apt-get update && apt-get upgrade does not find updates. • Is it possible to have multiple sets of key columns in a table?

  Filtered indexes is one of my new favorite things with SQL Server 2008. I am currently working on designing a new datawarehouse. There are two restrictions doing this It has to be fed from the old legacy system with both historical data and new data It has to be fed from the new business system with new data When we incorporate the new business system, we are going to do that for one market only. It means the old legacy business system still will produce new data for other markets (together with historical data for all markets) and the new business system produce new data to that one market only. Sounds interesting this far? To accomplish this I did a thorough research about the business requirements about the business intelligence needs. Then I went on to design the sucker. How does this relate to filtered indexes you ask? I'll give one example, the Stock transaction table. Well, the key columns for the old legacy system are different from the key columns from the new business system. The old legacy system has a key of 5 columns Movement date Movement time Product code Order number Sequence number within shipment And to all thing, I found out that the Movement Time column is not really a time. It starts out like a time HH:MM:SS but seconds are added for each delivery within the shipment, so a Movement Time can look like "12:11:68". The sequence number is ordered over the distributors for shipment. As I said, it is a legacy system. The new business system has one key column, the Movement DateTime (accuracy down to 100th of nanosecond). So how to deal with this? On thing would be to have two stock transaction tables, one for legacy system and one for the new business system. But that would lead to a maintenance overhead and using partitioned views for getting data out of the warehouse. Filtered index will be of a great use here. MovementDate DATETIME2(7) MovementTime CHAR(8) NULL ProductCode VARCHAR(15) NOT NULL OrderNumber VARCHAR(30) NULL SequenceNumber INT NULL The sequence number is not even used in the new system, so I created a clustered index for a new IDENTITY column to make a new identity column which can be shared by both systems. Then I created one unique filtered index for old system like this CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Legacy (MovementDate, MovementTime, ProductCode, SequenceNumber) INCLUDE (OrderNumber, Col5, Col6, ... ) WHERE SequenceNumber IS NOT NULL And then I created a new unique filtered index for the new business system like this CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Business (MovementDate) INCLUDE (ProductCode, OrderNumber, Col12, ... ) WHERE SequenceNumber IS NULL This way I can have multiple sets of key columns on same base table which is shared by both systems.

• Applying the Knuth-Plass algorithm (or something better?) to read two books with different length and amount of chapters in parallel

  I have a Bible reading plan that covers the whole Bible in 180 days. For the most of the time, I read 5 chapters in the Old Testament and 1 or 2 (1.5) chapters in the New Testament each day. The problem is that some chapters are longer than others (for example Psalm 119 which is 7 times longer than a average chapter in the Bible), and the plan I'm following doesn't take that in count. I end up with some days having a lot more to read than others. I thought I could use programming to make myself a better plan. I have a datastructure with a list of all chapters in the bible and their length in number of lines. (I found that the number of lines is the best criteria, but it could have been number of verses or number of words as well) I then started to think about this problem as a line wrap problem. Think of a chapter like a word, a day like a line and the whole plan as a paragraph. The "length" of a word (a chapter) is the number of lines in that chapter. I could then generate the best possible reading plan by applying a simplified Knuth-Plass algorithm to find the best breakpoints. This works well if I want to read the Bible from beginning to end. But I want to read a little from the new testament each day in parallel with the old testament. Of course I can run the Knuth-Plass algorithm on the Old Testament first, then on the New Testament and get two separate plans. But those plans merged is not a optimal plan. Worst-case days (days with extra much reading) in the New Testament plan will randomly occur on the same days as the worst-case days in the Old Testament. Since the New Testament have about 180*1.5 chapters, the plan is generally to read one chapter the first day, two the second, one the third etc... And I would like the plan for the Old Testament to compensate for this alternating length. So I will need a new and better algorithm, or I will have to use the Knuth-Plass algorithm in a way that I've not figured out. I think this could be a interesting and challenging nut for people interested in algorithms, so therefore I wanted to see if any of you have a good solution in mind.

• I have a very long and repetitive python path, where do I look to correct this?

  I know it is probably not necessary to paste the whole path, but just for the record I have done so below. Whenever I run a python command, it takes a long time to load this path I suppose. For instance, lets say I have a Car model class and want to add one price attribute (database column) per currency, given a list of currencies. What is the best way to do this? I had an approach that I thought would work, but it didn't exactly.   Hi - I have a function that recursively makes some calculations on a set of numbers. I want to also pretty-print the calculation in each recursion call by passing the string from the previous calculation and concatenating it with the current operation. • ADSIEdit Cleanup After Exchange 2003 Crash During Transition To Exchange 2010

  Hello all. I would value some input from a few Exchange 2010 experts. I have almost completed the transition from Exchange 2003 Standard to Exchange 2010 Standard. Everything went smoothly until I tried to uninstall Exchange 2003. At that point the server bit the dust and died completely. I now have NO access to the old Exchange System Management MMC as I am running Windows 2008 SR2 and Windows 7 only. I can only fix this with ADSIEdit, EMShell, and EMConsole. I have used the 2010 shell to move/remove/verify that all mailboxes, public folders and OAB are hosted on Exchange 2010. I also verified that the routing connector has been deleted. The only two things that were not done was to remove the Recipient Update Service and actually perform the removal of the 2003 software. I have spent a lot of time going through ASDIedit and have located the old Administrative Group and the Exchange 2003 server listed under it. I also located the Recipient Update Service which includes two entries; Enterprise and my domain name. I have read that it is an unwise idea to remove the old administrative group so I won't bother messing with that. I am repeatedly getting three warnings in the Application Log. • ASDIEdit Cleanup After Exchange 2003 Crash During Transition To Exchange 2010

  Hello all. I would value some input from a few experts. I have almost completed the transition from Exchange 2003 Standard to Exchange 2010 Standard. Everything went smoothly until I tried to uninstall Exchange 2003. At that point the server bit the dust and died completely. I now have NO access to the old Exchange System Management MMC as I am running Windows 2008 SR2 and Windows 7 only. I can only fix this with ASDIEdit, EMShell, and EMConsole. I have used the 2010 shell to move/remove/verify that all mailboxes, public folders and OAB are hosted on Exchange 2010. I also verified that the routing connector has been deleted. The only two things that were not done was to remove the Recipient Update Service and actually perform the removal of the 2003 software. I have spent a lot of time going through ASDIedit and have located the old Administrative Group and the Exchange 2003 server listed under it. I also located the Recipient Update Service which includes two entries; Enterprise and my domain name. I have read that it is an unwise idea to remove the old administrative group so I won't bother messing with that. I am repeatedly getting three warnings in the Application Log. • Need to link WP Blog with Rails App on Heroku

  I have a client who wants to migrate his Rails app to Heroku. However the client also has a blog associated with his domain that runs on WordPress. Currently, the WordPress blog is running happily alongside the Rails app, but once we migrate to Heroku, that clearly won't be possible. The url for the app is like http://mydomain.com, and the url for the blog is like http://mydomain/blog. I realize that the best long-term solution is to redo the blog in a Rails format like Toto or Jekyll. But in the short term, what is the best way to continue hosting the WP blog where it is (or somewhere) but use Heroku to run the app? The client doesn't want the blog to be on a subdomain, but to remain at mydomain/blog for SEO reasons and also since there is traffic to the blog. I have two ideas: Use rack_rewrite or refraction (or just a regular old 301 and Apache mod_rewrite) on the old (non-Heroku) server to redirect the main url from the old site to Heroku. In this case, I can just leave the Wordpress blog running happily where it is. I think?? Is there a reason to choose one of those options (rack_rewrite, refraction, or mod_rewrite) over the others if I do it this way? Switch the DNS info to point to the Heroku site, and then use a 301 redirect from the blog to the old site. But then I'll have to get the old (non-Heroku) site on a subdomain and use some kind of rewrite rules anyway so it looks like it isn't a subdomain. Are either of these approaches preferable, or is there another way to do it that's easier that I'm missing?

  I had to wipe our svn server, but I failed to "dump" the repositories before installing a new OS. However, I had a complete backup of every file in each repository. I've since transferred all the old files back over. Unfortunately the version history is completely gone. I still have all the old incremental files, and svn can see each revision with the "verify" command, but I'm wondering if it is possible to import the old history directly from the actual files (not a dump file)?

• Restore data from overwritten LVM

  I lost all of my data (8 TB) which I collected over the past few years yesterday because I made some seriuos mistakes during the remounting of my LVM. I run a XenServer5.6 installation with additional 4 harddisks for data storage. An LVM over those 4 HDDs was used to store all of my data. Yesterday, I reinstalled XenServer and wanted to mount my old Harddrives and add the LVM. I run xe sr-create [...] for all disks (/dev/sdb .. /dev/sde), but that was totally wrong. This command deletes the old LVM on the disks and created an new, empty lvm on every single disk with no partitions. No i got 4 empty harddrives :( Is it possible to recover some data from that lost LVM volumes? I have no clue how to do it because i deleted all informations about the old LVM. Is there a way to access the files insed that old lvm directly?

• EFS recovery given everything but the Registry

  I have an unfortunate problem: my old Win Xp installation has died, probably due to the hard drive failing. The drive now fails all SMART tests, but I can get files off it OK. I have now installed Windows 7 on a new drive, and want to transfer files from the old drive. However, some sensitive files were in an encrypted folder (I think EFS?). How can I un-encrypt them, given that I have essentially my entire old XP installation on disk? Thanks!

• I want to change hard drive. How to move system partition with Windows 7?

  I've bought a new hard drive and want to move all my data to it. I had no problem with moving all files on non-system partition. But I don't know how to move system partiton. Now I have 3 partitions on the new disk, fist two was created by Windows installation CD (I tried to move system using internal tools, but it didn't work for me), third is filled with my successfully transferred data from old disk. And there are two partitions on the old disk: the first one is system (Windows 7) and the second one is my old main storage, that I already moved to the new hard drive and now it is empty. How can I change the placement of Windows 7 with minimal difficulties and losses, so I could work on the new hard drive just as I did it on the old one?

Our domain points to the hostmonster DNS servers, but I can't figure out the right configuration for the remote email servers. • How do you handle data archiving?

  Backups are one thing, but long term archival is another. For example, you might be required to store emails for 7 years, or keep all project data indefinitely. I used to save archives to tape, but then I've had tapes get destroyed (drives rip the tape out). So...write to 2 tapes I hear you say. Is that what others do? Have 2 (or more) tapes of the same data for redundancy? But then the other issue is that tapes cannot usually be read by different backup software vendors. Eg if you go from Arcserve - Backup Exec - Commvault over 10 years you would need to keep all 3 systems so that you could restore old data. Likewise for hardware. Old tapes might not be barcoded. Might not be compatible with the new library etc etc. So do you keep old tape hardware AND old software just in case you might need to restore a 10 year-old file? Or...when you move to a new backup system do you migrate all archived data to the new system and re-archive it onto new tapes? That could be a huge job. Any thoughts?

If I buy a USB monitor I can use it as a secondary monitor in the main pc, and plug to the old PC when need. The question is: Does the USB monitor work during booting before the OS was loaded?

• How do I delete or modify Default User's default printer?

  I have some computers that I set up a couple years ago by creating a user account, setting it up the way I wanted, and copying that user's directory over Default User's directory. Pretty simple stuff. One of the things that I did was to add a printer and set it as the default. Straightforward, or so I thought. Things have changed, and that printer has been removed and replaced with a different printer. I deleted the old printer's object and added the new one. Now every time a new user logs in, their profile gets copied from Default User, and they get the old printer as their default. This re-adds the old printer object to the system. Now every user can see the old printer's object again. I want to permanently delete Default User's default printer. How?
