  • Is there any advantage to having more than 16gb ram on a Windows Dev machine?

    Assuming a machine (Dual Quad Core Xeon (2.26GHz) with 24GB RAM) running Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V. How many VMs can I expect to run at the same time with good performance. Is this overkill? Can you really have too much RAM? Assuming 2GB per VM thats around 16GB for the VMs with 8GB left over for the Main OS and Hyper-V. Sound about right? Edit: Tried to make the question sound less like bragging. Was never my intention. Its a hard question to write.

  • "Socket operation on non-socket" error due to strange sytax

    I ran across the error Socket operation on non-socket in some of my networking code when calling connect and spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was causing it. I finally figured out that the following line of code was causing the problem: if ((sockfd = socket( ai->ai_family, ai->ai_socktype, ai->ai_protocol) < 0)) { See the problem? Here's what the line should look like: if ((sockfd = socket( ai->ai_family, ai->ai_socktype, ai->ai_protocol)) < 0) { What I don't understand is why the first, incorrect line doesn't produce a warning. To put it another way, shouldn't the general form: if ( foo = bar() < baz ) do_somthing(); look odd to the compiler, especially running with g++ -Wall -Wextra? If not, shouldn't it at least show up as "bad style" to cppcheck, which I'm also running as part of my compile?

  • Alternatives libraries for loading PNG images

    My java J2SE application is reading a lot of (png) images from the web and some of them use features such as a transparency color for true-color images (tRNS section) that Sun's/Oracle's PNGImageReader implementation simply ignores. Therefore the common solution for loading via ImageIO.read(...); does not work for me as it relies on this incomplete PNGImageReader implementation. Does anybody know a png reader implementation that can read all forms of PNG images correctly - those with color table or true-color and alpha transparency or transparent color? As it is for a GPL project it should be a non-commercial one that can be included without licensing problems into the app. Edit: My be this question was too specific. Therefore let be redesign my question: Who knows alternative implementations and libraries that are able to load PNG files? I will then test the implementations for their capabilities to load some test png images. Edit2: The end result have to be a BufferedImage

  • Select rows from table1 and all the children from table2 into an object

    I want to pull data from table "Province_Notifiers" and also fetch all corresponding items from table "Province_Notifier_Datas". The table "Province_Notifier" has a guid to identify it (PK), table "Province_Notifier_Datas" has a column called BelongsToProvinceID witch is a foreign key to the "Province_Notifier" tables guid.   • MVC best practice when adding functions to controller?

    Hi I'm writing a function in my controller; this is supposed to take in a form, process it, register the user in DB, send a confirmation email etc etc. to avoid this function to be too cluttered, I was thinking of calling some sub-functions (eg: function registration() { //process form.. _insertInDb($formdata) _send_mail($address); //load confirmation view.. } function _send_mail($to) { //code here } function _insertInDb($formdata) { //other code here... } I'm not sure whether writing all the functions in the controller would be best practice -maybe I should insert all 'supporting' function (eg send_mail and insertInDb in this example) in another file and then import them? This would probably make the controller much more readable.. what's your view?

  • Should I be using Expression Blend to design really dynamic UIs?

    My company's product is, at its core, a framework for developing metadata-driven UIs. I don't know how to characterize it less succinctly than that, and hope I won't need to for purposes of this question, but we'll see. I've been trying to come up to speed on WPF, and have been building UI prototypes here and there, and recently I decided to see if I could use Expression Blend to help with the design of these UIs. And I'm pretty mystified at this point. It appears to me as though Expresssion Blend is designed with the expectation that you already know all of the objects that are going to be present in the UI at design time. But our program generates these object dynamically at runtime. For instance, a data row might be presented in a horizontal StackPanel containing alternating TextBlocks (for captions) and TextBoxes (for data fields). The number of these objects depends on metadata about the number of columns in the data row. I can, pretty readily, write code that runs through a metadata record and populates a StackPanel dynamically, setting up the binding of all of the controls to properties in either the data or metadata. (A TextBox's Width might be bound to metadata, while its Text is bound to data.) But I can't even begin to figure out how to do something like this in Expression Blend. I can manually create all these controls, so that I have a set of controls that I can apply styles to and work out the visual design of the app, but it's really a pain to do this. I can write code that goes through my data model and emits XAML for all these controls, I suppose, and then copy and paste it. But I'm going to feel really stupid if it turns out there a way to do this sort of thing in Expression Blend and I've dropped back and punted because I'm too dim to figure out the right way to think of it. Is this enough information for someone to try formulating an answer?

    Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. It's driving me crazy, do you have any suggestion? Thanx!

    Hey all, I am using http://pastie.org/966473 as a reference as all I need to do is encrypt something using AES256 encrypting. I created a class and put the implementation in the pastie on top of the implementation for my class. @implementation //pastie code @end @implementation //my class code @end In my class code I create a NSMutableData and try to call the EncryptAES method and I get a warning saying it might not respond to that. What am I doing wrong here? do I need to implement the pastie code elsewhere? Thanks for any help.

    hi, I'm having a problem with custom formatters in Drupal. I'm using a custom formatter on a CCK file file with the following content: but when I select it to use I get an internal server error: PHP has encountered an Access Violation at 16B357F9 Please note: 1) It sometimes worked, but the page becomes soon unavailable after a while 2) I've tried to replace the custom formatter content with a simple Hello and I get the error anyway, so it should not be related to the content. 3) I'm using another custom formatter with another CCK field and it doesn't give any error.   • Using report viewer, how do I pull from two seperate Datasets

    I have two datasets I need to pull from, A base that both reports use and then a separate one that only one report pulls from. I get the error Error 12 The Value expression for the text box ‘Textbox9’ refers to the field ‘Name’. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current dataset scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified dataset scope. My best guess is I have to associate them with the correct dataset but I have not been able to find any documentation on this. Can someone please tell me where in the rdlc document I need to code something like name.value, "dataset1" or something similar?

  • Is it getting to be time for C# to support compile-time macros?

    Thus far, Microsoft's C# team has resisted adding formal compile-time macro capabilities to the language. There are aspects of programming with WPF that seem (to me, at least) to be creating some compelling use cases for macros. Dependency properties, for instance. It would be so nice to just be able to do something like this: [DependencyProperty] public string Foo { get; set; } and have the body of the Foo property and the static FooProperty property be generated automatically at compile time. Or, for another example an attribute like this: [NotifyPropertyChanged] public string Foo { get; set; } that would make the currently-nonexistent preprocessor produce this: private string _Foo; public string Foo { get { return _Foo; } set { _Foo = value; OnPropertyChanged("Foo"); } } You can implement change notification with PostSharp, and really, maybe PostSharp is a better answer to the question. I really don't know. Assuming that you've thought about this more than I have, which if you've thought about it at all you probably have, what do you think? (This is clearly a community wiki question and I've marked it accordingly.)

My question is now, is the first one slower than the second one? Does it build a cartesic product and filters it afterwards with the where clauses ? Thank you.

    Hi, I'm currently writing some kind of a Maven POM preprocessor that assembles a POM for a project from multiple input files (basically a template and a module specific file). The files are hierarchically ordered (template = most general, module specific = least general). The problem is now to merge these files into a single POM file. Long story short or if you're not familiar with Maven: a POM looks like this (shortened): <project> <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>org.apache.maven</groupId> <artifactId>maven-core</artifactId> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> Basically the merger shall replace all values of the more general file with the values of the more specific file (i.e. singletons, e.g. the <modelVersion> above) but there are certain elements where the merger shall add the more certain element to a parent (i.e. collections, e.g. <dependency> elements shall always be added to the <dependencies> element and no <dependency> element shall be replaced by another). A more detailed example with definition of desired output: File A: <project> <modelVersion>A</modelVersion> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>groupIdA</groupId> <artifactId>artifactIdA</artifactId> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> File B: <project> <modelVersion>B</modelVersion> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>groupIdB</groupId> <artifactId>artifactIdB</artifactId> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> Desired output: <project> <modelVersion>B</modelVersion> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>groupIdA</groupId> <artifactId>artifactIdA</artifactId> </dependency> <dependency> <groupId>groupIdB</groupId> <artifactId>artifactIdB</artifactId> </dependency> </dependencies> </project> The set of collection type elements are known and should be configurable (preferably via a set of XPath expressions). A Java based solution is appreciated. What looked most promising so far was the tool mentioned here but the MERGE action produces something like <dependency> <groupId>groupIdAgroupIdB</groupId> <artifactId>artifactIdAartifactIdB</artifactId> </dependency> when merging, which is not what I need.   • php extending but with a new constructor...possible?

    I have a class: class test { function __construct() { print 'hello'; } function func_one() { print 'world'; } } what I would like to do is a have a class that sort of extends the test class. I say 'sort of', because the class needs to be able to run whatever function the test class is able to run, but NOT run the construct unless I ask it to. I do not want to override the construct. Anyone has any idea how to achieve this?
