• Storing website hierarchy in Sql Server 2008

  I want to store website page hierarchy in a table. What I would like to achieve is efficiently 1) resolve (last valid) item by path (e.g. "/blogs/programming/tags/asp.net,sql-server", "/blogs/programming/hello-world" ) 2) get ancestor items for breadcrump 3) edit an item without updating the whole tree of children, grand children etc. Because of the 3rd point I thought the table could be like ITEM id type slug title parentId 1 area blogs Blogs 2 blog programming Programming blog 1 3 tagsearch tags 2 4 post hello-world Hello World! 2 Could I use Sql Server's hierarchyid type somehow (especially point 1, "/blogs/programming/tags" is the last valid item)? Tree depth would usually be around 3-4. What would be the best way to achieve all this?

• Is Lazy Loading required for nHibernate?

  It took me a long time but I finally got nHibernate's Hello World to work. It worked after I did "lazy loading." Honestly, I couldn't tell you why it all worked, but it did and now I am reading you don't need lazy loading. Is there a hello world that anyone has that is bare bones making nHibernate work? Do you have to have lazy loading? I ask because I would like to use nHibernate but I need to understand how things are working. Thank you. Do you know of a hello world that doesn't have so much overhead? Is it better to use lazy loading? EDIT: I am using asp.net 3.5. Web Application Project.

• Does the Fetch Request do the recommended batch faulting?

  I'm curious. Apple says in the docs: Core Data automatically fires faults when necessary (when a persistent property of a fault is accessed). However, firing faults individually can be inefficient, and there are better strategies for getting data from the persistent store (see “Batch Faulting and Pre-fetching with the SQLite Store”). NSFetchRequest has this feature: [fetchRequest setFetchBatchSize:20]; Is this essentially performing such a batch faulting like recommended? Just to make this clear for others, faulting does not mean "turning into a fault" but it means "materializing it", just like "making a Scooby-Doo out of it". Pretty ugly wording error, in my opinion, but it's at least consistent in the docs ;)

• Catch not working and how to unset the exception handler

  catch is not working because there is installed an exception handler using set_exception_handler() I need "catch" to work, so I guess I need to unset the exception handler somehow. Things such as set_exception_handler(NULL) isn't working.   Groovy Groovy comes with a compiler called groovyc. For each script, groovyc generates a class that extends groovy.lang.Script, which contains a main method so that Java can execute it. The name of the compiled class matches the name of the script being compiled. For example, with this HelloWorld.groovy script: println "Hello World" That becomes something like this code: class HelloWorld extends Script { public static void main(String[] args) { println "Hello World" } } Scala Scala comes with a compiler called scalac. I don't know how it works. For example, with the same HelloWorld.scala script: println("Hello World") The code is not valid for scalac, because the compiler expected class or object definition, but works in Scala REPL interpreter. How is possible? Is it wrapped in a class before execution?

• Need to get back form controls' information externally

  Are there any tutorials or guides out there that anyone knows of that will show me how to read forms from an external program and get back information about the controls on the form? Currently, I can get the handle to the form, and I can get the class name, but I need to get more information such as a persistent name and contained data. Thanks. Edit: I now have a way to read the contained data (with the WM_GETTEXT message), however, I still need a persistent name/ID that I can be sure will not change from instance to instance. One way I can think of for doing this is to take the handle, find the position of the control on the window, and then get the handle from the position from then on. Another way is to determine a static ID for the control and then use that to get the handle from then on. The new scope of my problem is how to implement either of these. Any Ideas?

  Assuming I have the following strings: string str1 = "Hello World!"; string str2 = str1.SubString(6, 5); // "World" I am hoping that in the above example str2 does not copy "World", but simply ends up being a new string that points to the same memory space only that it starts with an offset of 6 and a length of 5. In actuality I am dealing with some potentially very long strings and am interested in how this works behind the scenes for performance reasons. I am not familiar enaugh with IL to look into this.

  From the docs: To summarize, though, if you execute a fetch directly, you should typically not add Objective-C-based predicates or sort descriptors to the fetch request. Instead you should apply these to the results of the fetch. If you use an array controller, you may need to subclass NSArrayController so you can have it not pass the sort descriptors to the persistent store and instead do the sorting after your data has been fetched. I don't get it. What's wrong with using them on fetch requests? Isn't it stupid to get back a whole big bunch of managed objects just to pick out a 1% of them in memory, leaving 99% garbage floating around? Isn't it much better to only fetch from the persistent store what you really need, in the order you need it? Probably I did get that wrong...

  I'm trying to display my code on a website but I'm having problems preserving the whitespace indentation correctly. For instance given the following snippet: <html> <body> Here is my code: <pre> def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end </pre> <body> </html> This is displayed in the browser as: Here is my code: def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end When I would like it displayed as: Here is my code: def some_funtion return 'Hello, World!' end The difference is that that current indentation level of the HTML pre tag is being added to the indentation of the code. I'm using nanoc as a static website generator and I'm using google prettify to also add syntax highlighting. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

  I just found a weird behaviour when attempting to extract a string from the Binary-table in the MSI. I have a file containing "Hello world", the data I get is "???Hello world". (Literary question mark.) Is this as intended? Will it always be exactly 3 characters in the beginning?   When reading the InputStream of an HttpURLConnection, is there any reason to use one of the following over the other? I've seen both used in examples. Manual Buffer: while ((length = inputStream.read(buffer)) > 0) { os.write(buf, 0, ret); } BufferedInputStream is = http.getInputStream(); bis = new BufferedInputStream(is); ByteArrayBuffer baf = new ByteArrayBuffer(50); int current = 0; while ((current = bis.read()) != -1) { baf.append(current); } EDIT I'm still new to HTTP in general but one consideration that comes to mind is that if I am using a persistent HTTP connection, I can't just read until the input stream is empty right? In that case, wouldn't I need to read the message length and just read the input stream for that length? And similarly, if NOT using a persistent connection, is the code I included 100% good to go in terms of reading the stream properly?

• Noob Droid Question regarding random number

  Brand new to droid programming, but would love to learn as much as possible, so I finally got my emulator working correctly, I even got a hello world button to work, I'm attempting to make this button display a random number, I've googled this and came up with this code: Random generator = new Random(); int n = generator.nextInt(n); I fixed the Random function by including some Random java utility. I'm assuming this code above goes in the .java file of the project, so my button code looks as follows (tested and works): PopUpText.makeText(v.getContext(), "Hello World", PopUpText.LENGTH_LONG).show(); I figured I could replace "Hello World" with n to display the number in the box, however the following error is stopping the compile: The local variable n may not have been initialized Any ideas why this is happening? Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

  Hi, I want to use a timer only once, at 1 second after the initialization of my main form. I thought the following would have a message box saying "Hello World" just once, but actually a new message box says "Hello World" every one second. Why so? I had put t.Stop() in the tick event. Also, do I need to dispose the timer somehow to avoid memory leakage? I have also tried to use gql = "select * from QuantityType where __key__=='" + KeyFactory.stringToKey(qTypeKey)+"'"; but it's now working.. How can I get a specific object from my datastore by it's key?

• Make XStream ignore one specific private variable

  Hi guys, I have a little problem with a class I am currently writing a save function for. I'm using XStream (com.thoughtworks.xstream) to serialize a class to XML using the DOMDriver. The class looks like this: public class World { private Configuration config; public World(Configuration config) { this.config = config; } } So, the issue here is that I do not want to serialize Configuration when serializing world, rather I'd like to give XStream a preconstructed Configuration instance when calling fromXml(). Problem here is mainly class design, Configuration holds a private reference to the GUI classes and therefore serializing Configuration means serializing the whole application completely with GUI etc.. And that's kind of bad. Is there a way to instruct XStream to not serialize the private field config, and upon load supply XStream with a configuration instance to use? greetings Daniel

• O(log N) == O(1) - Why not?

  Whenever I consider algorithms/data structures I tend to replace the log(N) parts by constants. Oh, I know log(N) diverges - but does it matter in real world applications? log(infinity) < 100 for all practical purposes. I am really curious for real world examples where this doesn't hold. To clarify: I understand O(f(N)) I am curious about real world examples where the asymptotic behaviour matters more than the constants of the actual performance. If log(N) can be replaced by a constant it still can be replaced by a constant in O( N log N). This question is for the sake of (a) entertainment and (b) to gather arguments to use if I run (again) into a controversy about the performance of a design.
