  • needing storage integrity (write/read) test - for BASH

    In need of shell scripts / bash commands to verify data integrity of local harddrives, usb-drives, etc, ... Like the famous www.heise.de/download/h2testw; or something that is at least common within repositories. (h2testw writes a specific datastring over and over onto the medium, then reads it again to verify if it was written correctly and displays write/read time/speed.) please no dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdx bs=1k && dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/null bs=1k since it won't verify if everything was written correctly. It is only a test if read/write is successful to the device. So far, I'm not too happy with badblocks -w -v /dev/sdx1 either, since it seems rather slow and I don't know what it exactly writes, and if it considers wear-leveling on flash media. There is also a program named F3 http://oss.digirati.com.br/f3/ that needs to be compiled. Designed after h2testw, the concept sounds interesting, i'd just rather have it as a ready to go bash script.

  • Unmount Mass Storage USB Device from the Command Line in Linux

    I've searched high and low, and can't figure this one out. I have a older Olympus Camera (2001 or so). When I plug in the USB connection, I get the following log output: $ dmesg | grep sd [20047.625076] sd 21:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0 [20047.627922] sd 21:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI removable disk Secondly, the drive is not mounted in the FS, but when I run gphoto2 I get the following error: $ gphoto2 --list-config *** Error *** An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use. *** Error (-60: 'Could not lock the device') *** What command will unmount the drive. For example in Nautilus, I can right click and select "Safely Remove Device". After doing that, the /dev/sg7 and /dev/sdg devices are removed. Some things I've tried already are sdparm and sg3_utils, however I am unfamiliar with them, so it's possible I just didn't find the right command.

    We are evaluating our options to upgrade our Windows SBS 2003 server. We are considering Windows SBS 2008, which comes with Exchange 2007 and an extra Windows Server 2008 Standard license. If we also bought Exchange 2010, could we install it on the Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and use the web client in combination with the Exchange 2007 server (that would be hosting the mailboxes)? Is that a supported server role for Exchange 2010? I remember reading about so called front-end server configurations, but I have no experience with that. Thanks!

We are planning to migrate just the database server, a provider said us the migration would be better to 2005 first, and then to 2008, because "the SQL Server 2008 is best suited for Windows Server 2008". Which are the pros and cons of each of these approaches? Migrate SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 and then to SQL 2008 Migrate SQL 2000 directly to SQL 2008 NOTE: Changing Operating System is not an option ($$$) right now for the company. Any article or experiences would be very much appreciated

  • Can I upgrade a Windows 2000 domain to 2008 and demote the 2000 server without clients attached?

    Hi all, We're planning to replace a Windows 2000 domain controller with a new 2008 DC (new hardware). We've elected to take the route of getting the 2000 domain schema up-to-snuff, join the 2008 server, upgrade it to a DC, and after replication demote the 2000 server (eventually to be taken off-line). The goal being to not have to visit all the workstations, and limited domain down-time. :) We want bring the old server here and do all the backups, Domain prep, migration and role transfers here, and then (hopefully) just plop the new 2008 back in place after it's done, and join the 2000 server back as a member server (so we can then do folder migrations, etc.). Can this server work be done off-site, without the workstations attached? If we do this will anything need to be done to the clients, once the new DC is physically in place, so they contact the new 2008 DC; or will they just 'know' and continue on using the existing domain settings/user profiles, etc.? Thanks in advance! :)

    I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?

    I'm interested in any software, experience or guidelines listed that help to deal with listing installed services, their primary user (or business person that is responsible for this service), domain names, ip addresses, ports in your servers. Servers are both Windows and Linux, so licenses are also good to track with all of this information. Scale of the infrastructure in question - 20-50 servers. Currently we have no better idea as to use Excel for it.

  • Intermittent timeout when connecting to Sql Server, what do I look for?

    Sql Server 2008 Standard 64bit on Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine hosted on a Hyper-V server. I'm getting intermittent timeouts when connecting to the server. This happens for both windows and Sql Authentication. May timeout every 2 out of 5 tries in different applications. When the connection times out, I can see (in Profiler) that no connection was made. Firewall is holey, server port is static (good ol' 1433). If I ping /t the server I get a steady connection that wavers between 1 and 2 ms. Any ideas what else to try would be appreciated, thanks.

  • Could SQL Server 2008 replication be used with NLB to allow unlimited scaling of reporting servers?

    We are currently using transactional replication in SQL Server 2008 to keep a secondary reporting server synchronized with a primary database server. This has been working weel and keeps some of the load off the primary server. Would it be possible to scale this solution to multiple reporting servers? We're expecting an increased load of read-only queries and it would be nice to be able to add reporting servers as needed. The general idea was the following: Each reporting server would use a "pull" subscription to get the data from the primary database publication. These reporting databases could be a couple of minutes behind the primary server without it being an issue. The reporting servers would be NLB'd together. All read-only queries would be directed to the NLB which should spread the load across the servers.

    I am unable to remote desktop to our Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 machine. There are a few people about with similar issues but no answers around. Symantec End Point is installed but no network protection. Using rdesktop in Linux I receive: ERROR: send: Connection reset by peer NOT IMPLEMENTED: PDU 12 ERROR: Connection closed Where the "PDU XX" number changes on each connection. In windows using the latest mstsc I receive: The connection was lost due to a network error. Try connecting again. If the problem persists, contact your network Administrator. Any ideas?

    I've seen two approaches to handling the presentation of shared storage to Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster VMs on VMWare vSphere. One is the traditional method of carving out a LUN on your SAN and presenting it to both hosts through the Microsoft ISCSI software initiator. The other method is to make a vmdk on an existing LUN and attach it to both hosts and made it an independent disk so that it isn't affected by snapshots. Is one way the "correct" way, or are both viable? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to doing either?

  • Server 2003 Terminal Services Printers not redirecting, no sessions created.

    Ok, odd scenario on a Windows Server 2003 Server Standard running as Terminal Server. Friday, installed 2 new Windows 7 machines to replace older XP machines. After adding these machines and their local printers, none of the otehr 16 Windows 7 machines can redirect printing to the server. I have checked Global Policy on domain controller, nothing is being blocked. In Terminal Services Manager, the client settings are set to User Client Settings. On RDP client, port redirection is enabled. I have tried disabling the Use Client Settings option and manually selected the options for print redirection and default printer connection, but still does not work. After some reaserching, I found this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2492632 I went ahead and added the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd\fEnablePrintRDR DWORD that the article references and set it to "1" to enable the option. I restarted the server, but still would not print. I am getting quite desperate with this issue because nothing seems to have changed when installing the two new clients and printers. I uninstalled the print drivers for the printers from the server. I have even gone as far as connecting each of the printers manually via UPD (\computername\printer) but even thought it works, it prints awfully slow. Please help!!!!

    How do configure a trusted connection between IIS 7 and SQL Server 2005? My webapp was working fine with Windows Authentication enabled in IIS. Now, in order to solve a problem, we need to use a trusted connection. Unfortunately, enabling the trusted connection in the web.config broke the webapp. Oddly enough, when I run this application with trusted connection from my local dev machine (using the Cassini web server) IIS (Windows Server 2008) is running on one machine. The database (SQL Server 2005 but could migrate to 2008) is running on another machine. We are on a Windows domain running AD. All traffic is within our own firewall - no public access. Beyond that, I can't provide much info but I can find it. We're very "compartmentalized" (we have server people, security people, oracle people, SQL Server people, etc.) Thanks! Update 02/14/2012 0902: The webapp is now functional (app no longer broken) but the main issue is still unresolved. Now I have the app's application pool running as a domain account with permissions on the SQL Server box and IIS box. We were using this account to run the application but, and here's the problem, we need to log the real user name that made a change. When using the service account, the name of that service account appeared in the audit tables, making the auditing quite useless. So, not I'm at least running again. The connection string in the web.config is using "Trusted_Connection=True", the appPool is using a domain account with access to both boxes, BUT when I make a change (logged in as me) the name of the service account (appPool identity) is still logged in the audit tables. I also manually granted full permissions to the service account on the webapp folder. What do I need to do in order to log my name, not the service account, in the audit tables? Everything I'm reading says I need to establish a trusted connection between the two servers.

PIVOT and UNPIVOT Table Examples Here is a very interesting question – the answer to the question can be YES or NO both. “If we PIVOT any table and UNPIVOT that table do we get our original table?” Read the blog post to get the explanation of the question above. 2009 What is Interim Table – Simple Definition of Interim Table The interim table is a table that is generated by joining two tables and not the final result table. In other words, when two tables are joined they create an interim table as resultset but the resultset is not final yet. It may be possible that more tables are about to join on the interim table, and more operations are still to be applied on that table (e.g. Order By, Having etc). Besides, it may be possible that there is no interim table; sometimes final table is what is generated when the query is run. 2010 Stored Procedure and Transactions If Stored Procedure is transactional then, it should roll back complete transactions when it encounters any errors. Well, that does not happen in this case, which proves that Stored Procedure does not only provide just the transactional feature to a batch of T-SQL. Generate Database Script for SQL Azure When talking about SQL Azure the most common complaint I hear is that the script generated from stand-along SQL Server database is not compatible with SQL Azure. This was true for some time for sure but not any more. If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed you can follow the guideline below to generate a script which is compatible with SQL Azure. Convert IN to EXISTS – Performance Talk It is NOT necessary that every time when IN is replaced by EXISTS it gives better performance. However, in our case listed above it does for sure give better performance. You can read about this subject in the associated blog post. Subquery or Join – Various Options – SQL Server Engine Knows the Best Every single time whenever there is a performance tuning exercise, I hear the conversation from developer where some prefer subquery and some prefer join. In this two part blog post, I explain the same in the detail with examples. Part 1 | Part 2 Merge Operations – Insert, Update, Delete in Single Execution MERGE is a new feature that provides an efficient way to do multiple DML operations. This series was indeed fantastic experience readers as many joined during the last few years and were not sure what they have missed in recent years. Disable All Triggers on a Database – Disable All Triggers on All Servers Question : How to disable all the triggers for a database? Additionally, how to disable all the triggers for all servers? For answer execute the script in the blog post. Importance of Master Database for SQL Server Startup I have received following questions many times. I will list all the questions here and answer them together. What is the purpose of Master database? Should our backup Master database? Which database is must have database for SQL Server for startup? Which are the default system database created when SQL Server 2005 is installed for the first time? What happens if Master database is corrupted? Bulk insert of very large file updates in any table using SSIS is usually preceded by disabling the index and followed by enabling the index. I have seen many developers running the following query to disable the index. 2010 List of all the Views from Database Many emails I received suggesting that they have hundreds of the view and now have no clue what is going on and how many of them have indexes and how many does not have an index. Some even asked me if there is any way they can get a list of the views with the property of Index along with it. Here is the quick script which does exactly the same. You can also include many other columns from the same view. Minimum Maximum Memory – Server Memory Options I was recently reading about SQL Server Memory Options over here. While reading this one line really caught my attention is minimum value allowed for maximum memory options. The default setting for min server memory is 0, and the default setting for max server memory is 2147483647. The minimum amount of memory you can specify for max server memory is 16 megabytes (MB). 2011 Fundamentals of Columnstore Index There are two kinds of storage in a database. Row Store and Column Store. Row store does exactly as the name suggests – stores rows of data on a page – and column store stores all the data in a column on the same page. These columns are much easier to search – instead of a query searching all the data in an entire row whether the data are relevant or not, column store queries need only to search a much lesser number of the columns. How to Ignore Columnstore Index Usage in Query In summary the question in simple words “How can we ignore using the column store index in selective queries?” Very interesting question – you can use I can understand there may be the cases when the column store index is not ideal and needs to be ignored the same. You can use the query hint IGNORE_NONCLUSTERED_COLUMNSTORE_INDEX to ignore the column store index. The SQL Server Engine will use any other index which is best after ignoring the column store index. 2012 Storing Variable Values in Temporary Array or Temporary List SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Move Database Files MDF and LDF to Another Location It is not common to keep the Database on the same location where OS is installed. Usually Database files are in SAN, Separate Disk Array or on SSDs. This is done usually for performance reason and manageability perspective. Now the challenges comes up when database which was installed at not preferred default location and needs to move to a different location. Here is the quick tutorial how you can do it. UNION ALL and ORDER BY – How to Order Table Separately While Using UNION ALL If your requirement is such that you want your top and bottom query of the UNION resultset independently sorted but in the same result set you can add an additional static column and order by that column. Let us re-create the same scenario.
