  • Simple server status page hosted externally available for users

    I am looking for any kind of script - can be asp or php or any other web language - that gives me the ability to log outages and the current state of the network for our organisation. This would be similar to any major Telco's "Network Status" page, but I just want to tell the user's out there if the systems are up and running and have a history of recent outages. This would be for our remote user's so they could go to a webpage (externally hosted from our main site) and see that we are currently having problems with our network. What are other people out there using?

  • How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

    We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track.   • mod_proxy failing as forward proxy in simple configuration

    (On Mac OS X 10.6, Apache 2.2.11) Following the oft-repeated googled advice, I've set up mod_proxy on my Mac to act as a forward proxy for http requests. My httpd.conf contains this: <IfModule mod_proxy> ProxyRequests On ProxyVia On <Proxy *> Allow from all </Proxy> (Yes, I realize that's not ideal, but I'm behind a firewall trying to figure out why the thing doesn't work at all) So, when I point my browser's proxy settings to the local server (ip_address:80), here's what happens: I browse to http://www.cnn.com I see via sniffer that this is sent to Apache on the Mac Apache responds with its default home page ("It works!" is all this page says) So... Apache is not doing as expected -- it is not forwarding my browser's request out onto the Internet to cnn. Nothing in the logfile indicates an error or problem, and Apache returns a 200 header to the browser. Clearly there is some very basic configuration step I'm not understanding... but what?

  • Simple way to get keys/mouse buttons working in Synergy (mac client, pc server)

    I'm trying to get Synergy working running as client on my Mac with SynergyKM Preferences panel. It's performing generally fine (just some real slow downs when my network is under heavy use, usually from youtube videos). The main thing I want to get working is none of the special buttons on my mouse are working on the client.. just the scroll and middle click.. but I have back/forward buttons I'd like to have working. Also my Windows Comfort Curve Keyboard has some extra keys and I'd like to know how to set those up to perform operations on my Mac client. I could have sworn that home/end weren't working but they seem to be now.. perhaps it's application specific..

I send $value with manuel for sendmemcache.ophp. sendmemcache.php never finish its proces. (Always "Transferring data ....") How can i resolve this ?

  • MySQL server simple insert/update/delete queries are taking a long time to execute

    We have a VPS hosting server with a MySQL server running on it. We host several databases for client's websites. Recently we have noticed that insert/update and delete queries are taking a long time to execute sometimes as close as 30 seconds. I use the following command to see these queries being executed: watch -n1 mysqladmin proc stat We have still not been able to track the root of this problem. I would apprecite if anyone had any pointers as to what we can check or improve to resolve the issue. Thanks

  • The simple "cron" that killed the cloud hosting option

    My SaaS application required a nightly cron job to run, analyze a database, send out e-mails and do some database maintenance work. This job cannot be triggered by user action. Almost every 'cloud' hosting solution balks at this to the point where they tell me "we cannot do this". Is this feature so exotic that cloud hosting providers simply don't care about? Am I using the wrong lingo here? should I use another concept? Do I have to go with dedicated hosting where i have "root access" as the only solution to this?

  • Compare 2 DVDs is not as simple as you may think

    I wonder how to check if two DVDs are exactly the same? I have two DVDs and if I open the DVDs and copy the content to the HDD and compare the respective files on the HDD it shows no difference. As I know DVD does also have some additional content (this content includes information saying if the DVD is bootable and some formating information I guess). How can I check also this additional content? Is it somehow possible without additional programs using Windows or Ubuntu?

    MVP in Virtual Machines Last week, on 1st April, I received an e-mail from Microsoft letting me know that I had been presented with a 2010 Microsoft® MVP Award for outstanding contributions in Virtual Machine technical communities during the past year.   It was an honour to be nominated, and is a great reflection on the vibrancy of the UK user group community which made this possible. Virtualisation for developers, not just IT Pros I consider it a special honour as my expertise in virtualisation is as a software developer utilising virtual machines to aid my software development, rather than an IT Pro who manages data centre and network infrastructure.  I’ve been on a minor mission over the past few years to enthuse developers in a topic usually seen as only for network admins, but which can make their life a whole lot easier once understood properly. Continuous learning is fun In 1676, the scientist Isaac Newton, in a letter to Robert Hooke used the phrase (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/268025.html) ‘If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants’ I’m a nuclear physicist by education, so I am more than comfortable that any knowledge I have is based on the work of others.  Although far from a science, software development and IT is equally built upon the work of others. It’s one of the reasons I despise software patents. So in that sense this MVP award is a result of all the great minds that have provided virtualisation solutions for me to talk about.  I hope that I have always acknowledged those whose work I have used when blogging or giving presentations, and that I have executed my responsibility to share any knowledge gained as widely as possible. Thanks to all those who helped – a big thanks to the UK user group community I reckon this journey started in 2003 when I started attending a user group called the London .Net Users Group (http://www.dnug.org.uk) started by a nice chap called Ian Cooper. The great thing about Ian was that he always encouraged non professional speakers to take the stage at the user group, and my first ever presentation was on 30th September 2003; SQL Server CE 2.0 and the.NET Compact Framework. In 2005 Ian Cooper was on the committee for the first DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper! day, the free community conference held at Microsoft’s UK HQ in Thames Valley park in Reading.  He encouraged me to take part and so on 14th May 2005 I presented a talk previously given to the London .Net User Group on Simplifying access to multiple DB providers in .NET.  From that point on I definitely had the bug; presenting at DDD2, DDD3, groking at DDD4 and SQLBits I and after a break, DDD7, DDD Scotland and DDD8.  What definitely made me keen was the encouragement and infectious enthusiasm of some of the other DDD organisers; Craig Murphy, Barry Dorrans, Phil Winstanley and Colin Mackay. During the first few DDD events I met the Dave McMahon and Richard Costall from NxtGenUG who made it easy to start presenting at their user groups.  Along the way I’ve met a load of great user group organisers; Guy Smith-Ferrier of the .Net Developer Network, Jimmy Skowronski of GL.Net and the double act of Ray Booysen and Gavin Osborn behind what was Vista Squad and is now Edge UG. Final thanks to those who suggested virtualisation as a topic ... Final thanks have to go the people who inspired me to create my Virtualisation for Developers talk.  Toby Henderson (@holytshirt) ensured I took notice of Sun’s VirtualBox, Peter Ibbotson for being a fine sounding board at the Kew Railway over quite a few Adnam’s Broadside and to Guy Smith-Ferrier for allowing his user group to be the guinea pigs for the talk before it was seen at DDD7.  Thanks to all of you I now know much more about virtualisation than I would have thought possible and it continues to be great fun. Conclusion If this was an academy award acceptance speech I would have been cut off after the first few paragraphs, so well done if you made it this far.  I’ll be doing my best to do justice to the MVP award and the UK community.  I’m fortunate in having a new employer who considers presenting at user groups as a good thing, so don’t expect me to stop any time soon.     Cannot open the disk 'D:\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\Ubuntu\Ubuntu-1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Reason: The physical disk is already in use. ====================== When I powered on my Ubuntu on VMwave, a window showed up within words above. I tried to remove the old hard disk in settings and created a new one, but it still doesnot work. Also, I tried to delete the .lck files and even the doc. BUT....... Has someone solved this problem? PLEASE do me a favour!!Many thanks!!

  • Need to set up shared storage for Guest virtual machines that are running on a Xen host

    My environment: I am doing these things at home with the purpose of learning about virtualization techniques. My machine have quad core processor that supports Intel-VT and 8GB RAM. XEN is the virtualization platform. In short, all domUs are LVM based. Mainly I have two questions; I need to have shared storage for these VMs. Something like NFS / NAS / iSCSI etc. However, I don't know which one is the best solution. Therefore, can someone tell me which suits best? Please note that, this shared storage need to be accessed by the other physical machines in the network. How to implement the selected solution for question #1? Any tutorials / guidelines / ebooks will be a great help and highly appreciated. Thank you in advance :)

  • How can you predict the time it will take for two processes in two different machines in a cluster to communicate?

    I am trying to develop a computing application which needs a lot of memory (500gb). Buying a single machine for that is overly expensive. I can, though, buy ~100 small instances on Digital Ocean or similar, divide the memory in blocks and use TCP to emulate shared memory between the instances. Now, my question is: how can I measure/predict the time it will take for two processes in two different machines like that to share information, in comparison to IPC and shared memory? Are there rules of thumb? I don't want exact values, but knowing more or less how much faster one is would be very helpful in visualising the feasibility of this approach.

  • What causes Google Analytics tags to work on some machines but not on others?

    The title of this question says it all. I am trying to update my code from the deprecated _getTracker() method to _createTracker(), but am experiencing inconsistent results. I have tried traditional and Asynch methods using a JSP include, but they all have the same result. My pageviews, and others in the office all show up in analytics. I have tried various test cases, but their visits are just not registering at all for them, but are showing up for me. The client has tried on multiple machines, and I have walked through with them step by step, so I know it's not just user error. I know that javascript being turned off will cause the tags not to work, but I am wondering if what else might cause the tags to not be recognized. I would appreciate any and all ideas.

I have built my own little custom XML-RPC server, and since I'd like to keep things simple, on both server and client side, what I would like to accomplish is to create a simplest possible client (in C# preferably) using WCF. Let's say that Contract for service exposed via XML-RPC is as follows: [ServiceContract] public interface IContract { [OperationContract(Action="Ping")] string Ping(); // server returns back string "Pong" [OperationContract(Action="Echo")] string Echo(string message); // server echoes back whatever message is } So, there are two example methods, one without any arguments, and another with simple string argument, both returning strings (just for sake of example). Service is exposed via http. Aaand, what's next? :)

    Hi Everyone, I am trying to figure out how to implement a simple "undo" of last drawing action on the iPhone screen. I draw by first preparing the frame buffer: [EAGLContext setCurrentContext:context]; glBindFramebufferOES(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_OES, viewFramebuffer); I then prepare the vertex array and draw this way: glVertexPointer(2, GL_FLOAT, 0, vertexBuffer); glDrawArrays(GL_POINTS, 0, vertexCount); glBindRenderbufferOES(GL_RENDERBUFFER_OES, viewRenderbuffer); [context presentRenderbuffer:GL_RENDERBUFFER_OES]; How do I simple undo this last action? There has to be a way to save previous state or an built-in OpenGL ES function, I would think. Thanks

  • Mapping table and a simple view with Fluent NHibernate

    I have mapped a simple entity, let's say an invoice using Fluent NHibernate, everything works fine... after a while it turns out that very frequently i need to process 'sent invoices' (by sent invoices we mean all entities that fulfill invoice.sent==true condition)... is there a way to easily abstract 'sent invoices' in terms of my data access layer? I dont like the idea of having aforementioned condition repeated in half of my repository methods. I thought that using a simple filtering view would be optimal, but how could it be done? Maybe I am doing it terribly wrong and someone would help me realize it :)?

  • Java simple encryption

    Hello, I would like to encrypt a textual (configuration) file stored on disk. Trying to use DES encryption I've had fatal error on client machines, I later found out caused because the algorithm could not handle accented characters (!) I suspect that was because I was using old packages (sun.misc.BASE64Decoder) - but I'm not sure that is the reason. However, I'm looking for a simpler solution - I need a really simple encryption (I know some people would not agree on that) - not RSA of 128 bit keys or so, just obscuring the text from curious eyes. It is really weird that I could not find on the web a simple trivial solution. Any idea, anyone ? Thanks, Ran
