• UBUNTU.. GRUB problem

  Hi, I have/(had) windows xp on one partition of my hdd. on second i installed ubuntu 9.10 yesterday. and after reboot of windows xp i get error "GRUB LOADING.". now i know that you can play around with that using live GRUB and all. putting GRUB on top of MBR or etc etc. something like that. i want to know - if i reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 which is available now - will it give me still the same error? or i will be able to use both OS? (i.e. is that problem solved in version 10.04 or still there? and if it is solved reinstallation of ubuntu will solve the problem or not?) anyhelp is welcome. Thanks

• Ubuntu: Alternative task-switcher to what is provided in compiz

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and really enjoying it. The task switcher default in Ubuntu shows a list of small icons for each running app much like the windows task switcher. It's fast and effective. I enabled Compiz and noticed that the task switcher changed to one with small thumbnails showing a smaller version of each window. Nice, but it slows the task manager down to about 0.5 seconds to display, which for me is far too long. Have googled the forums and it's a very common problem with ubuntu/compiz. I want to run compiz as it provides so many other features, but the slow task switcher is just not going to run with me. So was wondering if there is some way of NOT letting compiz override the task switcher, or, if there is some other task switcher that I can install which will not be slow like the compiz one. Any help would be appreciated.

• Help with putting Ubuntu on an old laptop

  Hi I dusted off an old laptop from 2004 which has Windows XP. I want to put Ubuntu on it. So, I downloaded the CD image and then burnt it to a disc. I tried starting the laptop and booting from CD but no luck. The CD drive doesn't work in the laptop anymore! So I shared the files on the local server and then accessed the wubi.exe file from within Windows XP, and it proceeded to download something else and install. It then asked me to restart, which I did. I now have a folder C:\ubuntu with a bunch of files in it. How do I get the option to boot to Ubuntu? Sorry, I have never installed a Linux variant before!   I have configured a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I followed the guidelines here (using Maildir): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dovecot The tests seemed alright so I connected it to GMail which is able to connect and fetch e-mails. But since there's no e-mail in the Maildir/ directory I can't decide if the problem is Postfix or Dovecot. And I am totally new to mailservers so I don't know where to start troubleshooting. So, I want to start by testing Dovecot. How can I create a fake "Hello World"-email directly on the server (using a text editor) so that I can try to fetch it with GMail? If Dovecot is alright, where do I start looking for errors in Postfix? Thank you for your time. Christoffer

• VMware 1.0.1 Windows7 - Ubuntu hostnames

  I'm trying to run Ubuntu as the guest OS using VMWware 1.0.10 with Windows 7 Ultimate as the host OS. I had this set up previously with Win XP as the host OS and in fact I'm using the same .vmx My problem is I can't get either Win7 or Ubuntu to be able to ping the other by hostname. After installing Samba and Winbind on Ubuntu, I was able to get this working when under WinXP, but for some reason I can't get it to work under Win7. I can ping by IP Address, and the guest OS even shows up by hostname under the Windows networking panel (but of course I can't do anything with it), but pinging using short hostnames just won't work. Also, Win7 firewall is turned off completely.

• Best memory-efficient web browser for Ubuntu?

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old laptop with only 756 MB of RAM, Pentium M 1.6 processor. I'm using Google Chrome 11.0 (dev channel) for web browsing, and it appears to be using up most of my memory and processor time. Does anyone know of a better browser than Chrome on Ubuntu, for an older computer like mine? I'm new to Ubuntu, so there may also be tweaks I can make to my existing system to have it perform better. But right now it's pretty slow when I've got ~5-10 tabs open. Related question: memory-efficient web-browser

• Ubuntu dual boot and grub error 18

  I've attempted to install 9.04 on an older toshiba laptop with a new 300GB drive and am getting the dreaded Grub error 18 that indicates that grub is looking beyond the bios readable area of the HD and failing. I just let ubuntu roll with its default selections when installing and ended up with this: Drive layout /dev/sda1 -ntfs 128GB -boot /dev/sda2 -extended 170GB -lba /dev/sda5 -ntfs 167.59GB /dev/sda6 -ext3 2.33GB /dev/sda7 -linux-swap 172MB I'd like make the system dual bootable without having to reinstall windows (real pain since I would have to go through an obstructionist IT dept). I know I can make windows bootable with a rescue disk and fixmbr but is there something I can do to make it dual bootable using the ubuntu livecd? Alternately, what should I have done at the partition stage of ubuntu installation to avoid this?

• Ubuntu firefox: some web-pages stuck on loading

  Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 beta, installation went fine and all programs are working smooth. Just this one weird network problem. Some sites simply are not opening and loading forever. For example, google.com and youtube are working well, but ubuntu.com and many other are not opening at all, or are loaded partly. One thing i noticed is that on all of those pages on firefox status bar is message "Looking up for www.google-analytics.com" (or similar remote resources) message appearing all the time (even on this page, but it somehow has loaded and working). I should mention that i tried those pages to open on windows OS on this same machine, and they opened without problems. So i am guessing that it has to be some sort of network configuration problems on Ubuntu. What could cause such problem?

• Dell Latitude E6420 dual-boot Ubuntu + Windows 7 Optimus graphics problems

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors? • Poor CPU usage under Ubuntu

  Hello, I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 and I am now experiencing a strange problem. My computer has a quad-core processor, and when I am running several processes simultaneously, none of the cores is fully used. Before the upgrade, when I was running 4 processes, each of them was using 100% CPU (I could see that with the 'top' command). But now, CPU usage oscillates and is always pretty low. • Unusable Source for Ubuntu image on Xen 3

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a new VM in Xen 3, running Ubuntu 10.4 (32 bit) as the guest OS. Xen 3 is installed on a machine running OpenSuse 11.2. I downloaded the Ubuntu image from the ubuntu.com website and I mounted it on /dev/loop0. When I try to create the new VM in Xen with the given source, Xen complains the "source is unusable". I've also checked the md5 sum for the image. It's fine. Any suggestion or hint that could help me?

• Missing swf plugin in Google Chrome [Ubuntu]

  How to play .swf file in Google Chrome? Because when I open .swf files it says Missing Plug-in. though when I open chrome://plugins it shows that it has Shockwave Flash plugin installed already. • Ubuntu 11.04 hangs at "checking battery state" while booting

  When I try to boot Ubuntu 11.04, it just hangs when it gets to checking battery state. I know this issue is usually related to graphic drivers, but it worked like a charm for months now. Last time I was on Ubuntu I updated my system with the update manager, so maybe an update caused it. Anyway, I really need Ubuntu. • Ubuntu Volume overriding settings set in Alsamixer

  Problem: How do I "lock in" the volume I set through alsamixer? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I adjusted the bass/treble columns in alsamixer but changing the system volume resets them all back to 100% I did save the settings by running alsactl store but everything is reset once I touch Ubuntu's volume icon in the top menu bar. This is rather painful because the computer is hooked up to a 650watt system with a massive subwoofer. As much as I enjoy my music, there's no need to have the walls vibrate :) What can I do to prevent Ubuntu from overriding the settings?

  Hi, I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

  I am new to Linux platform. I just tried installing Ubuntu alongside windows but allocated only 200 mb to the /boot partition which is not recommended. Now Ubuntu software update keep on insists me no enough space. What should I do? Is there any way to increase my /boot partition without removing the total OS? Or should I completely uninstall Ubuntu and put it back? Please anyone suggest me over this issue. I have no idea what to do. And please be elaborate, as I am new to Linux environment.

  I have a server in which SCO 5.x is installed. I have several thin clients which were supplied from our head office. Those thin clients have linux pre-installed in them. When we tried to connect to our SCO server, we have found out that the thin client does not support SCO terminal type. So the program (Which is written in Oracle forms) is not working correctly. Lots of function keys stopped working and screen also not getting refreshed correctly. Hence we decided to use Ubuntu Live USB keys in thin clients. Now the problem is how can we change the terminal type to SCO in ubuntu ? Means I want it in the text terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1,F2...) (Not in xterm...graphical terminal emulators). Does ubuntu support SCO terminal type ?

• Can't install Ubuntu 12 into VirtualBox (USB not recognized, ISO would not boot)

  I'm trying out VirtualBox 4.18 and wanted to install Ubuntu 12 as a test. After installing VirtualBox (on Debian squeeze/sid), creating a virtual machine for Ubuntu and pointing it in Settings Storage IDE Controllers to the ISO with the proper version of Ubuntu, checked the "Live CD" option. Tried to define the IDE as master / slave, primary / secondary - all to no effect, and trying to boot this system, I'm getting to the screen which says: FATAL: could not read from the boot medium! System halted I've copied the same ISO to the USB stick, and I can boot from the USB (outside VirtualBox). I've looked at couple of tutorials / walk-through, there's nothing I can see that I would've done wrong. So, how would I configure it to boot from the desired ISO? • Centos OS resource footprint vs Ubuntu package refresh

  I am trying to determine which distro to sink my teeth into. I am new to the Linux world and would like to choose a distro to focus on. I have read that CentOS uses less resources than Ubuntu, which is an issue for me since I am renting a VPS and resource cost is an issue. I have also read that Ubuntu has more up-to-date packages which is a concern for me as I want to use PHP and some packages that have a fair amount of dependencies. I am not using Linux as a desktop OS, rather just as a server for Apache, PHP, PERL, and Java development. What would be the best choice for a server OS? CentOS or Ubuntu?   I need to build an ubuntu server for school, but I hate with a passion command line interfaces. I need a server with a desktop, like the current win server 2003 (which has crashed, ugh). This server needs to host the school lan domain, have an active directory, and handle the roaming profiles that the students and staff access through WinXP workstations. • Share files - Ubuntu 12.4 and Windows 7 - one network - password not accepted

  I have three machines - two with windows 7 and one with Ubuntu 12.4 version. There are in the same network connected by modem. The two machines shares file with no problem, but they can not see the machine with Ubuntu. On the other hand, I am able to see the share files of the windows machines from the Ubuntu's Network. When I select a folder, it wants the network password - I changed it several times in order to be sure that I am entering the correct one but in every case it says that the password is wrong. I have read some topics about files sharing between Linux and windows in which it is said that I should use samba, but is there a more easy way to do this, using the build it options?

  I installed Ubuntu in a VM using VirtualBox, and after a few hours of Googling all the things I had to install and configure for the rest of the environment, I am finally up and running with a Ruby on Rails IDE and have MySql up and running. After I start up the Ubuntu VM, I have to go to a terminal window and do this to start MySql: /etc/init.d/mysql start So that works fine, but, since I am such a GUI person, I’m wondering how I can create an icon on the Ubuntu Desktop that I can click on to launch this command.
