  • Great Presentation to the Israel Dot Net Developers User Group (IDNDUG)

    I continue to be impressed with the quality of .NET Developers in Israel.. we had a full house last night for a 2+ hour presentation on building business applications with Silverlight and RIA Services.   The audience was very engaged and had lots of good, relevant questions which created a really good conversation.    Check out the slides and demo. I started off by demoing the Right-to-Left text support for Hebrew that is baked in as part of Silverlight 4.   ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • Moving from local machine to group web development environment

    I'm a freelancer who currently creates websites locally using something like MAMP to test websites locally before pushing them live with FTP. I'm looking at taking on my first employee, and I would need to be able to work on websites with them simultaneously. Can anyone explain or provide links to some good documentation on team workflow, or some key phrases I should be googling to get started on my set up? Unlike a lot of the stackoverflow community I've never worked in a dev team, large or small as I'm self taught so just need to know where to start. At present I'm thinking I need an extra computer to use as a server, then use Git or some such to version control files on that computer, as well as installing apache on it so it can be viewed by any computers in my current home network. Is this heading down the right track?

  • CPanel - How to stop Apache from running as root user?

    <?php echo `whoami`; ?> So this is returning 'root' and I don't know how to prevent it. I'm using WebHost Manager / CPanel which is supposed to create multiple users/vhosts and have Apache spawn it's process as that user/group. This isn't happening. If I login to WHM and open the PHP and SuExec Configuration section, my settings are: Default PHP Version (.php files) 5 PHP 5 Handler cgi PHP 4 Handler none Apache suEXEC on What's wrong? How can I get Apache to run as the correct user rather than root?

  • Performing user authentication in a CodeIgniter controller constructor?

    In "The Clean Code Talks -- Unit Testing" (http://youtu.be/wEhu57pih5w), Miško Hevery mentions that "as little work as possible should be done in constructors [to make classes more easily testable]'. It got me thinking about the way I have implemented my user authentication mechanism. Having delved into MVC development through CodeIgniter, I designed my first web application to perform user authentication for protected resources in controllers' constructors in cases where every public function in that controller requires the user to be authenticated. For controllers with public methods having mixed authentication requirements, I would naturally move the authentication from the constructor to each method requiring authentication (though I don't currently have a need for this). I made this choice primarily to keep the controller tight, and to ensure that all resources in the controller are always covered. As for code longevity and maintainability: given the application structure, I can't foresee a situation in which one of the affected controllers would need a public method that didn't require user authentication, but I can see this as a potential drawback in general with this implementation (i.e., requiring future refactoring). Is this a good idea?

  • Open Source Bulletin Board with Facebook Group Integration

    I'm working on a an open-source community-oriented project which needs a highly social component where users can post discussion topics and questions and interact with each other. It would be ideal to facilitate discussion seamlessly between a bulletin board and Facebook. Has anyone seen such an integration? I'm talking about something that goes beyond a simple FB OAuth and actually synchronizes both forum posts / topics / OAuth / comments.   • Making file in user's homedir accessible from web/webserver

    Hi everybody, I have a txt-file one of my user's homedir which is regularly updated there by a script. I now want to be able to access (read) this file from the web. /home/user/folder/file.txt So what I tried now is to log in as root, go into my webservers httpdocs folder /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs and there I tried to create a symbolic link with ln -s /home/user/foler/file.txt /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs/file.txt But this didn't work... I already tried changing the chmod of the symlink (which changes the ones from the original file of course) and also a chown to the user from webserver, but no matter what I tried I cannot open the file from the web or from a php-script (which is what I want to do) Can anybody help me and tell me what I need to do? What rights do I need to give? Or is there another way of achieving this?

    After reading Valve's new employee handbook, I was really interested in setting up a company map like they described on page 6: "The fact that everyone is always moving around within the company makes people hard to find. That’s why we have http://user — check it out. We know where you are based on where your machine is plugged in, so use this site to see a map of where everyone is right now." What I'm trying to figure out is: how I can tell which machine or domain user (either will do) is connected to a particular wall jack?

    Want to allow a standard user account to run an application as administrator without a UAC or password prompt? You can easily create a shortcut that uses the runas command with the /savecred switch, which saves the password. Note that using /savecred could be considered a security hole – a standard user will be able to use the runas /savecred command to run any command as administrator without entering a password. However, it’s still useful for situations where this doesn’t matter much – perhaps you want to allow a child’s standard user account to run a game as Administrator without asking you.   • iOS chat application design, sending/relaying the message over to the end user

    I have a design question. Let us say you were tasked with building a chat application, specifically for iOS (iOS Chat Application). For simplicity let us say you can only chat with one person at a time (no group chat functionality). How then can you achieve sending a message directly to an end user from phone A to phone B? Obviously there is a web service layer with some API calls. One of the API calls available will be startChat(). After starting a chat, when you send a message, you make another async call, let us call it sendMessage() and pass in a string with your message. Once it goes to the web service layer, the message gets stored in a database. Here is where I am currently stuck. After the message gets sent to the web service layer, how do we then achieve sending/relaying the message over to the end user? Should the web server send out a message to the end user and notify them, or should each client call a receiveMessage() method periodically, and if the server side has some info for them it can then respond with that info? Finally, how can we handle the case in which the user you are trying to send a message to is offline? How can we make sure the end user gets the packet when he moves back to an area with signal?

  • Great User Group if based near Gloucester + Links from Entity Framework 4.0 session

    I had a really fun evening doing “my final” EF 4.0 session last night (26th May 2010) at GL.NET based out of Gloucester (although secretly I made it into a IronRuby and Windows Azure session). They are a great crowd and Jimmy makes for a fantastic host + it is a very nice venue (Symantec offices in Gloucester, lots of parking, good room etc) + free pizza + free SWAG + trip to pub afterwards (the topics were very varied!). What more could you ask for? The next session is June 16th and will be on multi-tenanted ASP.NET MVC and comes highly recommended.   • Sharing a wifi connection between different user profiles on Windows XP

    I've set-up two separate user profiles on an old laptop running Windows-XP, and noted the following strange behaviour. When the wireless network is setup using WEP both user profiles can connect to the internet and I can switch between user profiles, without network connectivity issues. However when I changed the wireless security to WPA2, the first user to connect gets access to the internet, when switching to the second profile the connection fails. The behaviour is the same regardless of which of the two profiles logs on first. I also tried this with one user with admin rights and one without, and got the same result. I'm not too concerned about a fix for this other than forcing the users to log-off when sharing the laptop, but I'd be interested to know if anyone can corroborate my findings. The network config was done using Intel® PROSet/Wireless.
