• Make headphone output mono.

  my headphones are stereo but I would like the sound from the left and right to be combined then sent to both headphones. The reason is I'm watching a video where the people speaking are in the right ear as well as the music but they never speak in the left ear (it is not because they on the right side of the screen) If I take the right headphone off then I only hear the music in my left and there is no speaking.

• Performance of file operations on thousands of files on NTFS vs HFS, ext3, others

  [Crossposted from my Ask HN post. Feel free to close it if the question's too broad for superuser.] This is something I've been curious about for years, but I've never found any good discussions on the topic. Of course, my Google-fu might just be failing me... I often deal with projects involving thousands of relatively small files. This means that I'm frequently performing operations on all of those files or a large subset of them—copying the project folder elsewhere, deleting a bunch of temporary files, etc. Of all the machines I've worked on over the years, I've noticed that NTFS handles these tasks consistently slower than HFS on a Mac or ext3/ext4 on a Linux box. However, as far as I can tell, the raw throughput isn't actually slower on NTFS (at least not significantly), but the delay between each individual file is just a tiny bit longer. That little delay really adds up for thousands of files. (Side note: From what I've read, this is one of the reasons git is such a pain on Windows, since it relies so heavily on the file system for its object database.) Granted, my evidence is merely anecdotal—I don't currently have any real performance numbers, but it's something that I'd love to test further (perhaps with a Mac dual-booting into Windows). Still, my geekiness insists that someone out there already has. Can anyone explain this, or perhaps point me in the right direction to research it further myself?

• MacBook Pro battery capacity 65K mAh

  I have a 15" MacBook Pro 3.1 (that is Late 2007 model AFAIR). I've bought it new a couple of years ago. Recently its on-battery power lifespan became very short (30 to 10 minutes). When my notebook turns itself off due to "low battery" and I press the small button on the battery itself, all LED lights are alight, indicating full charge. When I plug in the power adapter, my Mac displays that "battery is fully charged, finishing charging process" (I have a Russian OS X 10.5.7, so that is a rough translation), but the LEDs on battery itself display (seemingly accurate) status that there are one or two "LEDs still not charged". My battery have as few as 37 recharge cycles (yes, I've neglected calibration over the time I've used it). Battery info programs like iBatt2 report battery capacity of 65 337 mAh (with by-design capacity of 5600 mAh). I get it that something went wrong with battery electronics. I've tried resetting my Mac's PRAM and SMC, it did not changed anything. Now I'm trying to recalibrate the battery, but looks like it does not help as well. Will try to recalibrate it several times in a row. I'd buy a new battery if I knew if it is battery fault, not a notebook's. Any suggestions? Update: After recalibration, my battery status now displays battery capacity of 1500 mAh. But with every recalibration (or simply when I use notebook without power adapter plugged in) this number changes in the range from 200 mAh to 1700 mAh. LEDs on battery now are synchronous with what nodebook thinks on the charge level. Also I've noticed that cycle count changes rather slowly. It is now 39, it was 37 when I've started recalibration, and I went through the process at least ten times... So, the main question is: does it look like that replacing the battery would help me (or does it look like this is notebook's problem)? I guess I should try replacing the battery.

• Setup LAN to serve webpages and voip and access to the web site from inside LAN with domain name

  I'd like to know if it will work: I have my domain and I´m serving a webpage in a nginx to the internet, but if I type my domain in my laptop inside LAN I access to my modem/router configuration, I cannot access to the web server unless I type the IP address. I would like to add a Bind server after the modem/router - (port forward, ports 80 and 5060), if the request is www.mydomain.com bind should resolve the nginx IP address and serve it, and if it is a voip request should address to the voip server and if I'd like to access to the website from inside LAN I'd like to type mydomain.com. Could I do it with this configuration? Do I need something else? Thanks in advace!

• Migrating Windows XP BOOT.INI Settings to Windows 7 Boot-loader

  Two months ago my motherboard died, so I bought a used computer that came with Windows 7. I have since installed my old hard-drive, which had Windows XP on it, in this system. What I am trying to do now is to figure out a way to migrate the settings from XP's BOOT.INI into 7's boot-loader. Below is the BOOT.INI I used in XP (I have reduced the strings and updated the disks to point to the new location of the old HD. Oh and I am not clear on the drive letters. In XP, I could boot the recovery console or MS-DOS from a file in C:\ that contains the boot-sector. I am not sure what drive letter it would be called now—I had to manually change all the drive letters of the old partitions in Windows 7 because it auto-assigned them all wrong/differently). • Full screen flash lags on Windows 7

  I have been experiencing an issue since I've up upgraded to Windows 7 where all flash videos have horrible frame rates when run in full screen mode. I have tried multiple browsers and i have the latest version of flash and video drivers. I have tried re-installing flash and disabling hardware acceleration. The problem occurs on youtube and hulu. • Is there a good XP like windows explorer for windows Vista?

  I'm still refusing to go to Windows Vista and now Windows 7 mainly due to the windows explorer, I find it cumbersome and hard to use exclusively with a keyboard. I use XP file explorer in the most basic view, the address bar at the top and files always in list view underneath. The reason I do this is because I'm almost blind and do everything from the keyboard and don't touch the mouse whilst navigating through files, this is because I can type "L[ENTER]D[Enter]B[Enter]" and know that I'm in "c:\documents and settings\Brett Ryan", and I can hit [Tab] once to go to the address bar to type in a folder. Can anyone suggest a replacement for windows explorer that brings back this basic navigational behavior?

• Poor home office network performance and cannot figure out where the issue is

  This is the most bizarre issue. I have worked with small to mid size networks for quite a long time and can say I'm comfortable connecting hardware. Where you will start to lose me is with managed switches and firewalls. The Issue The breakdown here is at item 5. No matter what I do I cannot have a switch at 5 and have to run everything wireless regardless of router. Issues related to using a switch (point 5 above) SpeedTest is good. Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate at all. Usually cannot ping other devices even on the same switch although, when able, ping times are good. Eventual lose of connectivity and can "sometimes" be restored by unplugging everything for several days, not minutes or hours but we're talking a week if at all. Directly connect to computer gives good internet connection however throughput to other devices connected to firewall is at best horrible. Yet printing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as they are connected via wireless. I have to force the RV220W to 1000Mb on the respective port if using a Gig Switch Issues related to using wireless in place of a switch (point 5 above) Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate. SpeedTest is good. Bottom line Internet speeds are awesome. By the way, Comcast went WAY above and beyond to make sure it was not them. They rewired EVERYTHING which did solve internet drops. Computer to computer connections are garbage Cannot get switch at 5 to work, yet other at 4 has never had an issue. Direct connection, bypass switch, is good for DHCP and internet. DNS must be on server, not firewall. Cisco insists its my switches but as you can see I have used four and two different cables with the same result. My gut feeling is something is happening with routing. But I'm not smart enough to know that answer. I run a lot of VM's at 5-c-3, could that cause it? What's different compared to my previous house is I have introduced Gigabit hardware (firewall/switches/computers). Some of my computers might have IPv6 turned on if I haven't turned it off already. I'm truly at a loss and hope anyone has some crazy idea how to solve this. Bottom line, I need a switch in my office behind the firewall. I've changed everything. The real crux is I will find a working solution and, again, after days it will stop working. So this means I cannot isolate if its a computer since I have to use them. Oh and a solution is not throwing more money at this. I'm well into $1k already. Yah, lame.

  Is there any free HTTP SSL VPN clients around, one that can act as an alternative to Cisco's own HTTP SSL VPN client (called AnyConnect)? The Cisco AnyConnect client has acknowledged problems, with no forthcoming solutions. Which is why I'm hoping for an alternative. Note: I'm only talking about the HTTP SSL VPN Client, not the HTTP SSL VPN Server. (If it were up to me they wouldn't be using Cisco at all, but it's not up to me.) Note: OpenVPN is a client that talks to their servers once you sign up for their service. It's not a generic VPN client. Note: ShrewSoft VPN is a client that uses IPsec and pre-shared keys, and was a good replacement for Cisco's old client - but not the new AnyConnect SSL VPN client. Note: Windows 7's VPN client fails to negotiate when presented with an SSL VPN connection. Note: I am looking for Windows clients only.

• gparted installed on OpenSuse shows all file system types as greyed out except for hfs

  I have had this problem before and fixed it, but I don't recall how I did it and I did not record it (sadness :( ) I have all the requisite commands installed on OpenSuse to support gparted's efforts in creating any of the supported file systems. I recall that the problem was that gparted could not find the commands, in any event all the file systems are greyed out in the context menu except for the legacy hfs partition which only supports < 2gb. Even extfs2-extfs4 are greyed out. How do I fix this?

• rr.com appended to URL and I don't know why

  I've been having some pretty bad and intermittent internet connectivity issues. I keep getting timeouts on my browsers, or what appears to be timeouts on my browsers. In Chrome it's generally error 21. FF it times out. And so on. While this is happening, I can go into the command line and ping or traceroute the same domain and it works fine. I use my cellphone on the same network and it's fine connecting to the same domain. And when it fails, it's all domains that are down in all browsers, chrome, FF, etc. I also noticed that when I try to connect to 192.168.1.1 it says in chrome did you mean www.192.168.1.1rr.com but when I enter https://192.168.1.1 it's fine. It only seems to do this in Chrome. This is making me think I have a virus. I did some researching about something called road runner, but I can't find any related traces. I also ran a full virus scan using nod32 (eset) and nothing. Any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated. The intermittent loss of total internet access is really annoying and I'm worried about why it's trying to append the rr.com domain in Chrome. I suspect I'm dealing with two different issues, but you never know. Also for the DNS I'm using Google's DNS servers, the famous 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4

• Why Does My Website Redirect me to my localhost?

  Alight, my website has some issues that I'm not sure what's causing them. Visit this page http://online-file-sharing.net/tos.html and click one of the bottom footer links... it redirects you to your localhost in the address bar. I have no idea why it does this. I'm hosting this website on my own server, which is this computer, and using Xampp. If this information helps. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm also using DYNDNS as my nameservers.

• PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. Could this difference maybe be a problem? Here is a list of my components. I hope that anybody find something I didn't think about yet. • Networked Parallel Port in Linux / KVM / QEMU

  What I want to use is the "-parallel" tcp or udp option from KVM / QEMU, but I don't seem to find any server for this client. I don't serve a printer but a hardware dongle. I checked ser2net, which does provide "/dev/lp0" sharing, but it doesn't seem to work for KVM / QEMU. I suspect KVM / QEMU requires "/dev/parport0". I did rmmod lp, modprobe ppdev, linked ser2net to parport0, but it didn't work out. Perhaps ser2net is not suited for this. I tried socat as well, and I tried netcat. No success. Does anyone know any KVM / QEMU compatible parallel port server? Or did any of netcat, socat or ser2net work for you?

• Windows Installer using usb drive for temp purposes

  When installing apps that are built around Windows Installer, it would appear that it often uses my external usb hard disk (when it's connected) as the temp location while it expands and installs the application (creates a folder off the root with a guid name). Is there anyway to change this so it always defaults to a specific drive? This appears to be the case on Windows Vista and 7, not sure about previous releases. EDIT: Current environment variables look like this: TEMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp TMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp EDIT: I have a funny suspicion that it's using the drive with the largest available free space.

• Is there a Unix/Linux platform equivalent to Telligent Community?

  Telligent Community combines blogs, wikis, forums, and file-sharing capabilities into a single product with single sign-on, using all Microsoft technologies. Is there an equivalent offering that runs on Unix/Linux? Or would I have to pick and choose individual product offerings and figure out another option for single sign-on across them? Are there plug-ins for something like WordPress or MovableType that might add the necessary functionality? A friend of mine is looking to add a "members-only" area to her company's website, and since they're hosted on Dreamhost (and can't afford StackExchange pricing yet), I'm trying to find other options for them.
