• A simple WCF Service (POX) without complex serialization

  I'm a complete WCF novice. I'm trying to build a deploy a very, very simple IIS 7.0 hosted web service. For reasons outside of my control it must be WCF and not ASMX. It's a wrapper service for a pre-existing web application that simply does the following: 1) Receives a POST request with the request body XML-encapsulated form elements. Something like valuevalue. This is untyped XML and the XML is atomic (a form) and not a list of records/objects. 2) Add a couple of tags to the request XML and the invoke another HTTP-based service with a simple POST + bare XML -- this will actually be added by some internal SQL ops but that isn't the issue. 3) Receive the XML response from the 3rd party service and relay it as the response to the original calling client in Step 1. The clients (step 1) will be some sort of web-based scripting but could be anything .aspx, python, php, etc. I can't have SOAP and the usual WCF-based REST examples with their contracts and serialization have me confused. This seems like a very common and very simple problem conceptually. It would be easy to implement in code but IIS-hosted WCF is a requirement. Any pointers?

• Choosing the right web service

  My website currently working in ASP.NET 1.1 Old Process In our database we have huge amount of data stored for a decoding purpose. We have to update this huge set of data table each week(Data is supplied from a vendor). In our website (in asp.net 1.1) we query our database to decode information. New process Now instead of storing data in our database and query them, we want to replace this through the web service, AS now the vendor is supplying us a DLL, which will give us the decoded information. Information on the DLL provided by the vendor The DLL provided, can only be added in 4.0 sites. SO that also impleies that i can not directly add the dll to my 1.1 site. This DLL is exposing certain methods, we simply have to add the DLL refernce in our web service and call the method and fetch the needed information. Thus we will not have to store those information in our database. So which type of web service I should go for (asmx OR WCF) that will use the DLLs provided by vendor to fetch the decoded information ?? Flexibility i am looking for in the web service are: It can be consumed from asp.net 1.1 site directly and also using jQuery ajax. It can be consumed from other web services running on the server. It can be consumed from some windows services running from the server. NOTE : Moreover we have a plan to migrate our website from asp.net 1.1 to 4.0 version in future.So it should be that much supportive for future upgrade.

  Initially I believed these 3 to be doing more or less the same thing with just the notation being different. Until recently, when i noticed that their does exists a big difference between the results of the KeyWordQuery/FullTextQuerySearch and Web service Query. I used Sharepoint Search Service Tool available at http://sharepointsearchserv.codeplex.com/ and ran the same query i.e. Select title, path, author, isdocument from scope() where freetext('ASDSADA-21312ASD-ASDASD'). This time I got the following results:- * Title: TestPDF * path: http://SharepointServer/Shared Documents/TestPDF.pdf * author: null * isDocument: true Again note the path. While the search results from 2nd method are useful as they provide me the file path exactly, I can't seem to understand why is the method 1 not giving me the same results? Why is there a discrepancy between the two results?

• File Locked by Services (after service code reading the text file)

  I have a windows services written in C# .NET. The service is running on a internal timer, every time the interval hits, it will go and try to read this log file into a String. My issue is every time the log file is read, the service seem to lock the log file. The lock on that log file will continue until I stop the windows service. At the same time the service is checking the log file, the same log file needs to be continuously updated by another program. If the file lock is on, the other program could not update the log file. • Why does GetWindowThreadProcessId return 0 when called from a service

  When using the following class in a console application, and having at least one instance of Notepad running, GetWindowThreadProcessId correctly returns a non-zero thread id. However, if the same code is included in a Windows Service, GetWindowThreadProcessId always returns 0 and no exceptions are thrown. Changing the user the service launches under to be the same as the one running the console application didn't alter the result. What causes GetWindowThreadProcessId to return 0 even if it is provided with a valid hwnd? And why does it function differently in the console application and the service? • Getting the data inside the C# web service from Jsonified string

  In my JS I use Jquery's $ajax functions to call the web service and send the jsonified data to it. The data is in the following format: var countries = { "1A": { id: "1A", name: "Andorra" }, "2B": { id: 2B name: "Belgium" }, ..etc }; var jsonData = JSON.stringify({ data: data }); //then $ajax is called and it makes the call to the c# web service On the c# side the web service needs to unpack this data, currently it comes in as string[][] data type. How do I convert it to the format so I can refer to the properties such as .id and .name? Assuming I have a class called Sample with these properties? Thanks! • Doing a POST to a Service Operation in ADO.NET data services

  Is it possible to POST to a service operation defined in an ADO.NET data service (it is decorated with WebInvoke)? I had no problem calling the service operation as an HTTP GET. However, when I switched to doing a POST, the stack trace consistently comes back with "Parameter cannot be NULL". I am using the jQuery syntax below, and sending the POST as JSON (though I'm not including the $.ajax call, the parameter names line up exactly). It would be possible to try this with WCF, as opposed to ADO.NET data services (newly renamed as WCF data services). However, my preference would be to use this approach first. I have tried this with and without the stringify method. Most examples online only show how to use a POST to entities (i.e. for handling CRUD operations). • Cannot install windows service

  I have created a very simple window service using visual studio 2010 and .Net 4.0. This service has no functionality added from the default windows service project, other than an installer has been added. If i run installutil.exe appName.exe on my dev box or other windows 2008 R2 machines in our domain the windows service installs without issue. When i try to do this same thing on our customer site, it fails to install with the following error. Microsoft (R) .NET Framework Installation utility Version 4.0.30319.1 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Exception occurred while initializing the installation: System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\TestService\WindowsService1.exe' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515). This solution has only 1 project and no dependencies added. I have tried it on multiple machines in our environment and two in our customers. The machines are all windows 2008 R2, both fresh installs. One machine has just .net 2.0 and .net 4.0. The other .net 2, 3, 3.5 and 4. I am a local admin on each of the machines. I have also tried the 64bit installer but get the following error, so i think the 32 bit one is the one to use. System.BadImageFormatException Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Why Java applicaiton is running slow for clients on Linux

  We have two linux servers which have Apache Tomcat Installed. One is running the Database, the other is running with Java application. More than 100 users are connected to the servers. Server machines are quad core normal PC's which have 4 GB memory. It was running properly for the last 6 months but the application has recently started to run slowly . Suddenly the Java application is getting stuck & users cannot work for some time. There is no network issue. I am trying to identify the reason for this, whether it is a machine problem or the problem is in the Java application. Can any body help me with this?

• Reading XML or objects from a Web service

  This is my first time working with webservices and I am a bit lost. I successfully called the functions, but I only can get one value from the service. I read that the easiest way is to read xml or create objects and then call their values. Currently I use functions that return the desired value but I need to call them 3 times to get all the data witch is a waste of time and resources. I tried to call the service with the URL and use it as a website or getting the service to work the same way without importing into the program. The thing is that i cant find a way to pass the values into the url, because of that i get only blank pages. What is the fastest way to get my data from the services? I need city name, temperature and a flag if the city is valid. I need to pass the zip code to the service. Thank you. • HTTP 401.3 when PUT, DELETE to ADO.NET Data Service (.svc)

  I have an ADO.NET Data Service (we'll call it service.svc). When I deploy it to an IIS 6 site with Integrated Windows Authentication turned on, all requests (GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE) work fine for me, because I am an administrator on the box. However, when a non-admin user hits the service, only GET and POST requests work. When they try a PUT or DELETE request, they get an HTTP 401.3 "Access is Denied" error: "Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the web server's administrator to give you access to '...\service.svc'." If I give the "Authenticated Users" local group write access to the .svc file, everything works as it should, but I really don't want to do this (and don't think I should have to do this to get this to work). In fact, I'm confused as to why changing the file permissions would affect this at all, but it definitely seems to be the problem. I've found a couple of different suggestions to fix somewhat similar problems in the Microsoft forums (Here, and I would post more links, but am being told that new users can only post one link in a post), but none of the solutions help. Any help is much appreciated. I am certainly no IIS expert, and this one has got me stumped.

• How do I get the PreviewDialog of Apache FOP to actually display my document?

  Search as I may I have not found a solution to my problem here and I'm hoping the combined minds of StackOverflow will push me in the right direction. My problem is as follows, I'm developing a print and print preview portion of a messaging system's user agent. I was given specific XSLT templates that after transforming XML will produce a Formatting Objects document. With Apache FOP I've been able to render the FO document into PDF which is all fine and good, but I would also like to display it in a print preview dialog. Apache FOP contains such a class called PreviewDialog which requires in its constructor a FOUserAgent, which I can generate, and an object implementing the Renderable Interface. The Renderable Interface has one implementing class in the FOP package which is called InputHandler which takes in its constructor a standard io File object. Now here is where the trouble begins. I'm currently storing the FO document as a temp file and pass this as a File object to an InputHandler instance which is then passed to the PreviewDialog. I see the dialog appear on my screen and along the bottom in a status bar it says that it is generating the document, and that is all it does. Here is the code I'm trying to use.
