• Noob Objective-C/C++ - Linker Problem/Method Signature Problem

  There is a static class Pipe, defined in C++ header that I'm including. The static method I'm interested in calling (from Objetive-c) is here: static ERC SendUserGet(const UserId &_idUser,const GUID &_idStyle,const ZoneId &_idZone,const char *_pszMsg); I have access to an objetive-c data structure that appears to store a copy of userID, and zoneID -- it looks like: @interface DataBlock : NSObject { GUID userID; GUID zoneID; } Looked up the GUID def, and its a struct with a bunch of overloaded operators for equality. • Problem interfacing GSM USB modem to Java application

  I am working on an open-source application called FrontlineSMS which can be interfaced with GSM modems to send and receive SMS. The windows installer that is available through their website works fine. Since i wanted to modify it, I got the source code and built the jar and tried to launch it. When I plug in the GSM modem and launch the application, it sometimes detects the GSM device and i am even able to send and receive SMS. Or else 1.) • How can I beta test web Perl modules under Apache/mod_perl on production web server?

  We have a setup where most code, before being promoted to full production, is deployed in BETA mode - meaning, it runs in full production environment (using production database - usually production data; and production web server). We call that stage BETA testing. One of the main requirements is that BETA code promotion to production must be a simple "cp" command from beta to production directory - no code/filename changes. For non-web Perl code, achieving seamless BETA test is quite doable (see details here): Perl programs live in a standard location under production root (/usr/code/scripts) with production perl modules living under the same root (/usr/code/lib/perl) The BETA code has 100% same code paths except under beta root (/usr/code/beta/) A special module manipulates @INC of any script based on whether the script was called from /usr/code/scripts or /usr/code/test/scripts, to include beta libraries for beta scripts. This setup works fine up till we need to beta test our web Perl code (the setup is EmbPerl and Apache/mod_perl). The hang-up is as follows: if both a production Perl module and BETA Perl module have the same name (e.g. /usr/code/lib/perl/MyLib1.pm and /usr/code/beta/lib/perl/MyLib1.pm), then mod_perl will only be able to load ONE of these modules into memory - and there's no way we are aware of for a particular web page to affect which version of the module is currently loaded due to concurrency issues. Leaving aside the obvious non-programming solution (get a bloody BETA web server) which for political/organizational reasons is not feasible, is there any way we can somehow hack around this problem in either Perl or mod_perl? I played around with various approaches to unloading Perl modules that %INC has listed, but the problem remains that another user might load a beta page at just the right (or rather wrong) moment and have the beta module loaded which will be used for my production page.

• MVVM Light Toolkit - RelayCommands, DelegateCommands, and ObservableObjects

  I just started experimenting with Laurent Bugnion's MVVM Light Toolkit. I think I'm going to really like it, but I have a couple questions. Before I get to them, I need to explain where I'm coming from. I currently use a combination of Josh Smith's MVVM Foundation and another project on Codeplex called MVVM Toolkit. I use ObservableObject and Messenger from MVVM Foundation and DelegateCommand and CommandReference from MVVM Toolkit. The only real overlap between MVVM Foundation and MVVM Tookit is that they both have an implementation for ICommand: MVVM Foundation has a RelayCommand and MVVM Tookit has a DelegateCommand. Of these two, DelegateCommand appears to be more sophisticated. It employs a CommandManagerHelper that uses weak references to avoid memory leaks. With that said, a couple questions: Why does MVVM Light Toolkit use RelayCommand rather than DelegateCommand? Is the use of weak references in an ICommand unnecessary or not recommended for some reason? Why is there no ObservableObject in MVVM Light? ObservableObject is basically just the part of ViewModelBase that implements INotifyPropertyChanged, but it's very convenient to have as a separate class because view-models are not the only objects that need to implement INotifyPropertyChanged. For example, let's say you have DataGrid that binds to a list of Person objects. If any of the properties in Person can change while the user is viewing the DataGrid, Person would need to implement INotifyPropertyChanged. (I realize that if Person is auto-generated using something like LinqToSql, it will probably already implement INotifyPropertyChanged, but there are cases where I need to make a view-specific version of entity model objects, say, because I need to include a command to support a button column in a DataGrid.) • Using M2Crypto to save and load X509 certs in pem files

  I would expect that if I have a X509 cert as an object in memory, saved it as a pem file, then loaded it back in, I would end up with the same cert I started with. This seems not to be the case however. Let's call the original cert A, and the cert loaded from the pem file B. A.as_text() is identical to B.as_text(), but A.as_pem() differs from B.as_pem(). To say the least, I'm confused by this. As a side note, if A has been signed by another entity C, then A will verify against C's cert, but B will not. I've put together a tiny sample program to demonstrate what I'm seeing. When I run this, the second RuntimeError is raised. • Decoding ima4 audio format

  To reduce the download size of an iPhone application I'm compressing some audio files. Specifically I'm using afconvert on the command line to change .wav format to .caf format w/ ima4 compression. I've read this (wooji-juice.com) awesome post about this exact topic. I'm having trouble w/ the "decoding ima4 packets" step. I've looked at their sample code and I'm stuck. Please help w/ some pseudo code or sample code that can guide me in the right direction. Thanks! Additional info: Here is what I've completed and where I'm having trouble... I can play .wav files in both the simulator and on the phone. I can compress .wav files to .caf w/ ima4 compression using afconvert on the command line. I'm using the SoundEngine that came w/ CrashLanding (I fixed one memory leak). I modified the SoundEngine code to look for the mFormatID 'ima4'. I don't understand the blog post linked above starting w/ "Calculating the size of the unpacked data". Why do I need to do this? Also, what does the term "packet" refer to? I'm very new to any sort of audio programming.

• How do I make Master/Detail subreports in ReportBuilder come out right?

  I've got a report in ReportBuilder that's supposed to report on two objects. I didn't create this report, and I can't ask the person who did about how it works. Before running the report, we have some code that goes through, finds all the properties on the objects, and loads them into a memory dataset that looks like this: OBJECT_ID: TStringField PROP_NAME: TStringField PROP_VALUE: TStringField The report engine then creates a line on the report for each property in this dataset. This is implemented in a sub-report, whose parent only contains an OBJECT_ID, which is a human-readable name. Everything was going great until we had to display a "comment" of arbitrary size in the report. I made a second sub-report with a TMemoField so it could hold the text, and set the report up in the report designer. What I expect when I run the report is something that looks like this: HEADER Object 1 properties Object 1 comment Object 2 properties Object 2 comment I've managed to get just about everything but that. I used the MasterDataPipeline and MasterFieldLinks properties of the sub-report's pipelines to try to link the OBJECT_IDs of the sub-reports to the OBJECT_ID of the header, and that's the closest I've managed to come, but now what I see is: HEADER Object 1 properties Object 1 comment Object 2 comment The "Object 2 properties" section is nowhere to be seen, even though I've manually verified that the data is making it into the dataset correctly. This is driving me nuts. Any ReportBuilder gurus out there know what's going on and now to fix it?

• How can I force Javascript garbage collection in IE? IE is acting very slow after AJAX calls & DOM

  I have a page with chained drop-downs. Choosing an option from the first select populates the second, and choosing an option from the second select returns a table of matching results using the innerHtml function on an empty div on the page. The problem is, once I've made my selections and a considerable amount of data is brought onto the page, all subsequent Javascript on the page runs exceptionally slowly. It seems as if all the data I pulled back via AJAX to populate the div is still hogging a lot of memory. I tried setting the return object which contains the AJAX results to null after calling innerHtml but with no luck. Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera all show no performance degradation when I use Javascript to insert a lot of data into the DOM, but in IE it is very apparent. To test that it's a Javascript/DOM issue rather than a plain old IE issue, I created a version of the page that returns all the results on the initial load, rather than via AJAX/Javascript, and found IE had no performance problems. FYI, I'm using jQuery's jQuery.get method to execute the AJAX call. • Noob Objective-C/C++ - Linker Problem/Function Def Problem

  There is a static class Pipe, defined in C++ header that I'm including. The function I'm interested in calling (from Objetive-c) is here: static ERC SendUserGet(const UserId &_idUser,const GUID &_idStyle,const ZoneId &_idZone,const char *_pszMsg); I have access to an objetive-c data structure that appears to store a copy of userID, and zoneID -- it looks like: @interface DataBlock : NSObject { GUID userID; GUID zoneID; } Looked up the GUID def, and its a struct with a bunch of overloaded operators for equality. UserId and ZoneId from the first function signature are #typedef GUID Now when I try to call the function, no matter how I cast it (const UserId), (UserId), etc, I get the following linker error: "Pipe::SendUserGet(_GUID const&, _GUID const&, _GUID const&, char const*)", referenced from: -[PeoplePaneController clickGet:] in PeoplePaneController.o Is this a type/function signature error, or truly some sort of linker error? I have the headers where all these types and static classes are defined #imported -- I tried #include too, just in case, since I'm already stumbling :P Forgive me, I come from a web tech background, so this c-style memory management and immutability stuff is super hazy. • NHibernate.MappingException (no persister for) weirdness

  The weird part being that I have other tests that validate the mapping and even the method being called (Nhib session.SaveOrUpdate) that run just fine. The entire exception is below. The failing one is saving data that has been converted from a legacy db (which has it's own session). The repository is also a replacement design for a different IProjectRepsitory that worked fine doing this, so the new repository is also a likely suspect here. Does anyone see what I'm missing or have some questions to narrow it down?   I have an Action that needs to read a file from a secure location, so I have to use impersonation to read the file. But if I replace these 2 lines: var bytes = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes(path); return File(bytes, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); with this: return File(path, "application/octet-stream", "FileName"); It does NOT work and I get the error message: Access to the path 'c:\projects\uploads\1\aa2bcbe7-ea99-499d-add8-c1fdac561b0e\Untitled 2.csv' is denied. I guess using the File results with a path, tries to open the file at a later time in the request pipeline when I have already "undone" the impersonation. Remember, the impersonation code works because I can read the file in the bytes array. What I want to do though is stream the file to the client. Any idea how I can work around this? • MP3 Decoding on Android

  Hi. We're implementing a program for Android phones that plays audio streamed from the internet. Here's approximately what we do: Download a custom encrypted format. Decrypt to get chunks of regular MP3 data. Decode MP3 data to raw PCM data in a memory buffer. Pipe the raw PCM data to an AudioTrack Our target devices so far are Droid and Nexus One. Everything works great on Nexus One, but the MP3 decode is too slow on Droid. The audio playback starts to skip if we put the Droid under load. We are not permitted to decode the MP3 data to SD card, but I know that's not our problem anyways. We didn't write our own MP3 decoder, but used MPADEC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpadec/). It's free and was easy to integrate with our program. We compile it with the NDK. After exhaustive analysis with various profiling tools, we're convinced that it's this decoder that is falling behind. Here's the options we're thinking about: Find another MP3 decoder that we can compile with the Android NDK. This MP3 decoder would have to be either optimized to run on mobile ARM devices or maybe use integer-only math or some other optimizations to increase performance. Since the built-in Android MediaPlayer service will take URLs, we might be able to implement a tiny HTTP server in our program and serve the MediaPlayer with the decrypted MP3s. That way we can take advantage of the built-in MP3 decoder. Get access to the built-in MP3 decoder through the NDK. I don't know if this is possible. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do to speed up our MP3 decoding? -- Rob Sz

  I am working on an image manipulation problem. I have an overhead projector that projects onto a screen, and I have a camera that takes pictures of that. I can establish a 1:1 correspondence between a subset of projector coordinates and a subset of camera pixels by projecting dots on the screen and finding the centers of mass of the resulting regions on the camera. I thus have a map proj_x, proj_y <-- cam_x, cam_y for scattered point pairs My original plan was to regularize this map using the Mathscript function griddata. This would work fine in MATLAB, as follows [pgridx, pgridy] = meshgrid(allprojxpts, allprojypts) fitcx = griddata (proj_x, proj_y, cam_x, pgridx, pgridy); fitcy = griddata (proj_x, proj_y, cam_y, pgridx, pgridy); and the reverse for the camera to projector mapping Unfortunately, this code causes Labview to run out of memory on the meshgrid step (the camera is 5 megapixels, which apparently is too much for labview to handle) I then started looking through openCV, and found the cvRemap function. Unfortunately, this function takes as its starting point a regularized pixel-pixel map like the one I was trying to generate above. However, it made me hope that functions for creating such a map might be available in openCV. I couldn't find it in the openCV 1.0 API (I am stuck with 1.0 for legacy reasons), but I was hoping it's there or that someone has an easy trick. So my question is one of the following 1) How can I interpolate from scattered points to a grid in openCV; (i.e., given z = f(x,y) for scattered values of x and y, how to fill an image with f(im_x, im_y) ? 2) How can I perform an image transform that maps image 1 to image 2, given that I know a scattered mapping of points in coordinate system 1 to coordinate system 2. This could be implemented either in Labview or OpenCV. Note: I am tagging this post delaunay, because that's one method of doing a scattered interpolation, but the better tag would be "scattered interpolation"

• How to change image and disable UIBarButtonItem

  I have a NavigationBar app with two views: a parent and a sub view. In the sub view I'm adding a button to the right corner as follows: - (void)viewDidLoad { UIBarButtonItem *tempButton = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"lock-unlocked.png"] style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(lockScreen)]; self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = tempButton; [tempButton release]; } When that button is clicked I want to change the image of this rightBarButtonItem and disable the leftBarButtonItem (which was added automatically by the controller). Basically have two states of a button, locked and unlocked. Question 1: The only way I can find how to change the image is to create a new UIButtonItem with a new image and replace rightBarButtonItem with that new one. But I'm wondering if there's a way to just change the image without creating a new UIBarButtonItem. Am I creating a memory leak if I keep creating new UIBarButtonItem? Question 2: How can I get a hold of self.navigationItem.leftBarButtonItem and disable/enable it? I don't create that one manually, it's created automatically for me by the controller. I don't see any method/property on UIBarButtonItem to enable/disable user interaction with it.

• StackOverflow in VB.NET SQLite query

  I have an StackOverflowException in one of my DB functions that I don't know how to deal with. I have a SQLite database with one table "tblEmployees" that holds records for each employees (several thousand posts) and usually this function runs without any problem. But sometimes after the the function is called a thousand times it breaks with an StackOverflowException at the line "ReturnTable.Load(reader)" with the message: An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in System.Data.SQLite.dll If I restart the application it has no problem to continue with the exact same post it last crashed on. I can also make the exactly same DB-call from SQLite Admin at the crash time without no problems. • WCF Named Pipe IPC

  I have been trying to get up to speed on Named Pipes this week. The task I am trying to solve with them is that I have an existing windows service that is acting as a device driver that funnels data from an external device into a database. Now I have to modify this service and add an optional user front end (on the same machine, using a form of IPC) that can monitor the data as it passes between the device and the DB as well as send some commands back to the service. My initial ideas for the IPC were either named pipes or memory mapped files. So far I have been working through the named pipe idea using WCF Tutorial Basic Interprocess Communication . My idea is to set the Windows service up with an additional thread that implements the WCF NamedPipe Service and use that as a conduit to the internals of my driver. I have the sample code working, however I can not get my head around 2 issues that I am hoping that someone here can help me with: In the tutorial the ServiceHost is instantiated with a typeof(StringReverser) rather than by referencing a concrete class. Thus there seems to be no mechanism for the Server to interact with the service itself (between the host.Open() and host.Close() lines). Is it possible to create a link between and pass information between the server and the class that actually implements the service? If so, how? If I run a single instance of the server and then run multiple instance of the clients, it seems that each client gets a separate instance of the service class. I tried adding some state information to the class implementing the service and it was only retained within the instance of the named pipe. This is possibly related to the first question, but is there anyway to force the named pipes to use the same instance of the class that is implementing the service? Finally, any thoughts on MMF vs Named Pipes? Thanks for you help

• How to parse nagios status.dat file?

  I'd like to parse status.dat file for nagios3 and output as xml with a python script. The xml part is the easy one but how do I go about parsing the file? Use multi line regex? It's possible the file will be large as many hosts and services are monitored, will loading the whole file in memory be wise? I only need to extract services that have critical state and host they belong to. Any help and pointing in the right direction will be highly appreciated. • how to convert bitmap image to CIELab image?

  Hello to stackoverflow members! This is my first post but I love reading the questions and answers on this forum! I'm using VS2008, CSharp, NET 3.5 and Windows XP Pro latest patches on this project. I am reading in a jpeg file to a bitmap image using CSharp in the following way: Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap("background.jpg"); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bmp); I then write some text and logos on g using various DrawString and DrawImage commands. I then want to write this bitmap to a tiff file using the command: bmp.Save("final_artwork.tif", ImageFormat.Tiff); I don't know what the TIFF tags in the header of the final resultant TIFF file will be when you do bmp.Save as shown above? But what I want to produce is a TIFF image file with PHOTOMETRIC CIELab, BITSPERSAMPLE 8, SAMPLESPERPIXEL 3, FILLORDER MSB2LSB, ORIENTATION TOPLEFT, PLANARCONFIG CONTIG, and also uncompressed and singlestrip. Im fairly certain, at least I have not found anything about Microsoft API and CIELab, I can not convert the bitmap image to CIELab photometric and the other requirements using anything from the Microsoft API or .NET 3.5 environment - someone please correct if I am wrong. I have used libtiff in a project in the past but just to write a tiff file where the tiff image in memory was already in CIELab format and all the other requirements as noted per above. Im not certain libtiff can convert from my CSharp bitmap image, which is probably RGB photometric, to CIELab, 8 bps, and 3 spp? Maybe I can use OpenCVImage or Emgu CV or something similiar? So the main question is what is going to be the easiest way to get my final bitmap image as outlined above into a CIELab TIFF and also meeting the other requirements per above? • How to utilize WebDev.WebServer.exe (VS Web Server) in x64?

  Visual Studio is x86 until at least the 2010 release comes around, my question is can anyone think of a way or know of an independent ASP.NET debug server that's x64 for 2008? Background: Our ASP.NET application runs against Oracle as the DB. Since we're on 64-bit servers for memory concerns later, we need to use Oracle's 64-bit drivers (Instant Client). Setup: x64 OS (XP or Windows 7) IIS (5 or 7, both x64 App Pools) Oracle 64-bit Instant Client (Separate Directory, in the PATH) Visual Studio 2008 SP1 In IIS the application pool runs as 64-bit, uses the Oracle drivers as intended, however since WebDev.WebServer.exe is 32-bit you'll get a BadImageFormatException because it's trying to load 64-bit driver DLLs in a 32-bit environment. All of our developers would like to be able to use the quick debug server via Visual Studio 2008, but since it runs as 32-bit we're unable to. Some problems we run into are during application startup, so although we're attaching to the IIS process sometimes that isn't enough to track an issue down. Are there any alternatives, or work-arounds? We would like to match our Dev/Val/Prod tiers as much as possible, so everything running in x64 would be ideal.
