• Workaround for the Mono PrivateFontCollection.AddFontFile bug

  When I call the PrivateFontCollection.AddFontFile method in Mono.net It always returns a standard font-family. This bug has already been reported on several websites, but as far as I know without a way to solve it. The bug itself isn't fixed in the Mono-libraries yet. Is there any workaround for it? EDIT: As a reaction on henchman's answer I will post the code: PrivateFontCollection pfc = new PrivateFontCollection(); pfc.AddFontFile("myFontFamily.ttf"); myFontFamily = pfc.Families[0x00]; Font myFont = new Font(myFontFamily,14.0f); I know this code will work fine on the Microsoft.Net framework, but when executing on Mono, it just gives a standard font-family (I think it is Arial) with the name of myFontFamily.ttf

  hi, I have methods which return interface and some methods which accepts interface as parameters. I am trying to use Net DataContractSerializer but I am getting following error... The formatter threw an exception while trying to deserialize the message: There was an error while trying to deserialize parameter http://tempuri.org/:id. The InnerException message was 'Error in line 1 position 120. XML 'Element' 'http://tempuri.org/:id' does not contain expected attribute 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/2003/10/Serialization/:Type'. The deserializer has no knowledge of which type to deserialize. Check that the type being serialized has the same contract as the type being deserialized.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Please help me how to resolve this error.... If I use Netdatacontract attribute on Operation Contract, can i use DataContract and Datamember attribute on serializable class??? Thanks in advance...

• Continous Build Integration with SourceSafe and Windows Batch Files

  I want to create a continuous build integration system for .NET using just Windows batch files and Visual Source Safe. I've come up with the following batch file so far - set ssdir=\\xxxx\vss cd d:\mydir "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual SourceSafe\ss.exe" diff "$/sourcedir" -R -Q > diffout.txt This will spit out a file containg lines like "SourceSafe files different from local files" when a change has been made. My challenge is to figure out if those lines are in the file, then do a get and kick off MSBuild if they are. I'd then schedule the batch file to run every 10 minutes or so. Anyone got any thoughts on how to do that? Or any other ways of doing continuous build integration without downloading a complicated build automation system? Update: Happy to use cscript or powershell too, though not really familiar with those environments. My main aim is to avoid installing 3rd party software

  Hi, I've spent many many hours tonight reading up on implementing the event-based asynchronous pattern Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any articles at all on witting a class that only supports one Async invocation. Every example I've seen assumes that a method call will be called more than once and thus, should have a userState object passed into the MethodNameAsync You'll see that MS makes mention of this in the third bullet point on this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228974(VS.80).aspx under the "Simultaneously Executing Operations" heading. But I'm confused. Should I be using AsyncOperation and AsyncOperationManager classes to have asynchronous functionality where a method can only be called by one thread at a time? A link would also be nice :) Thanks

• Inserting clobs into oracle with ODBC

  I'm trying to insert a clob into Oracle. If I try this with an OdbcConnection it does not insert the data into the database. It returns 1 row affected and no errors but nothing is inserted into the database. It does work with an OracleConnection. However, using the Microsoft OracleClient makes our webservices often crash with an AccessViolationException (Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.). This happens a lot when we use OracleDataAdapter.Fill(dataset). So using this doesn't seem like an option. Is there any way to insert/update clobs with more then 4.000 characters from .Net with an OdbcConnection?

But, in Word, I see the code in black-and-white format; I loose the syntax highlighting as I get in the source code editor (for me, gvim).   I have been sorting through this issue all day and hope someone can help pinpoint my problem. I have created a "asynchronous progress callback" type functionality in my app using ajax. When I strip the functionality out into a test application I get the desired results. See image below: Desired Functionality When I tie the functionality into my single page application using the same code I get a sort of blocking issue where all requests are responded to only after the last task has completed. In the test app above all request are responded to in order. The server reports a ("pending") state for all requests until the controller method has completed. • Problem wit MDAC when trying to compile in VS2008 using x64 bit target platform

  I am trying to compile an 32 bit application. I am aware of problems with it but that is why its being compiled on 64 bit version. I am hanging at this problem. Application uses lots of sql stuff. In sqltypes.h file: (provided by MDAC) #ifdef _WIN64 typedef INT64 SQLLEN; typedef UINT64 SQLULEN; typedef UINT64 SQLSETPOSIROW; #else For some reason when its compiled on 32 bit platform it works great But when I try building it on 64 it goes berserk. Error 61 error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'SQLLEN' ..\external\microsoft sdk\include\sqltypes.h 50 It does not recognize INT64, UINT64. Is there something I need to enable so it will work under 64 build process? Missing some #include or #define? Any help would be great Thanks

  We have a Makefile which runs on a Windows 2003 machine and we are using mingw32-make for it. Since the Makefile has many include paths, it exceeds the buffer size of 8K that the cmd can handle [Ref - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473/EN-US/due to which the compilation results in "input line too long" issue. I wanted to know the following - What would be the best way to optimize the Makefile as I have already removed unwanted compiler switches, include paths etc. Is there any way we can put all the INCLUDE paths in one .txt file and import it in the Makefile.I could not find any mingw32 documentation for the same. • Algorithm: efficient way to remove duplicate integers from an array

  I got this problem from an interview with Microsoft. Given an array of random integers, write an algorithm in C that removes duplicated numbers and return the unique numbers in the original array. E.g Input: {4, 8, 4, 1, 1, 2, 9} Output: {4, 8, 1, 2, 9, ?, ?} One caveat is that the expected algorithm should not required the array to be sorted first. And when an element has been removed, the following elements must be shifted forward as well. Anyway, value of elements at the tail of the array where elements were shifted forward are negligible. Update: The result must be returned in the original array and helper data structure (e.g. hashtable) should not be used. However, I guess order preservation is not necessary. Update2: For those who wonder why these impractical constraints, this was an interview question and all these constraints are discussed during the thinking process to see how I can come up with different ideas.

In a Desktop Appication, developed in C#, I have a function in which a object in created like this. namespace Class 1 { variables section; .... .... Function1() { local variables; try { Object1 obj = new Object1(); .... .... if(true) { .... } else { **obj.Dispose();** } } catch() {} finally {} } } The object is not disposed when the else part is executed.   Hi! I'm trying to make a C# program which will use a C .dll (unfortunately, the .dll doesn't have good documentation) to access a smart card. One of the functions of the .dll uses name of the reader as argument. My problem is that I don't know how to get the name.   I have a weird problem in my vb.net web application sometimes. webmail webform with html editor, sometimes very rare users type for example more than 200 or 400 characters and send the message to other user. But the reciever only recieves 5 or 7 characters. 2 or 3 words of the message. I don know what is going on. I checked the code, no bugs everything is working fine.All the users are on Microsoft XPsp2 platform. Any help will be appreciated. Is this sufficient , or shall I provide any more input regarding the problem...?? OK I got it... the problem is when I type characters in HtmlEditor it keeps on continuing, i mean it should go to the end and automatically comes to the second line....but it is going on and on.how can I stop this.

• Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

  I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that.   I am not sure why other people have not asked this before. But have you notice that the asp:Calendar shows an extra week at the end? For example if the VisibleMonth is set to 2010-03-01 and FirstDayOfWeek to Sunday: It will show 6 weeks. Feb 28 to March 6 March 7 to March 13 March 14 to March 20 March 21 to March 27 March 28 to April 3 April 4 to April 10 I was wondering why Microsoft shows the last Row which is entirely on April. I tried to search the net for a property but it does not seem to be existing. The only solution that I could think of is to override the Pre_Render and check all individual date if they are still within the week of the VisibleDate. But of course that is an extreme checking since each rendering of the control shows it.

  I'm Writing a simple pong game in C# and XNA 4.0 to learn unit testing. The tools used are TestDriven.NET and NUnit, all newest versions. The problem is, if I test the code with VS2010 internal debugger, everything runs fine, but when I use "Run Test(s)" from menu, the application chokes with error: Test 'WindowsGame1.Game1.TestGameMenu' failed: Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Content.ContentLoadException : Error loading "SpaceBackground". File not found. ----> System.IO.FileNotFoundException : Error loading "Content\SpaceBackground.xnb". File not found. (some more below...) So it stops when the first textre is going to be loaded. • Windows Azure: need to know the data processing time

  I have stored some files in the form of blobs on azure and I have written an application that would access these blobs. When I host this application as a web role on azure, it works perfectly and I am happy with that. But now, I wanted to know “what is the query time taken to access each blob file?” I was searching for this through the Microsoft Azure Storage SLA and I found that for GetBlob request type, the maximum processing time should be within the product of 2 seconds multiplied by the number of MBs transferred in processing the request. I am still unclear. What is the actual processing time of my data query? How can I measure it? Can I be able to speed up the processing time? I can understand that the processing time depends on internet speed, location of the data center where my data is being stored, and location of data center where my application is being hosted. But still, will I be able to speed up my query?

• Is WPF the Future of Windows UI Development?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

• On WindowsMobile, how can i tell what other processes are reserving shared memory space?

  On WindowMobile 6.1, I am using VirtualAlloc to reserve 2MB chunks, which will return me an address from the large shared memory area so allocations do not count against my per process virtual space. (doc here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa908768.aspx) However, on some devices i notice that I am not able to reserve memory after a certain point. VirtualAlloc will return NULL (getlasterror() says out of memory). The only explanation for this that I see is that another process has already reserved a bunch of memory and my process is therefore unable to. Any idea where I can find a tool to show me the shared mem region of a WM device? Thanks.
